The moment Imperial admitted between the four of them that they couldn't name something as basic as one post-war German Chancellor it was obvious the game was only going to go one way.

I'm picking Balliol for the semis at the very least. They took a while to warm up, but when they did, they looked like so many of the classic UC brainbox teams. One to watch.

As much as I enjoy watching these brilliant young minds at work, however, as a classical musician, I mourn the lack of interests in classical or art music (not being judgmental to other forms of music but for lacking a better description of the kind of music I'm referring to) in the western world at large. Why was Swift not allowed? Circa 12.30. Usually a surname is enough...
They asked for an entire name. Swift could've been anyone. The last name she shares with Jonathan Swift and her first name with Elizabeth Taylor. Usually when asked "who did so and so" surnames are enough, but when the question specifically describes their name, the entire name is required.

Is that American English for subtitles? There are a good many viewers of UC on TH-cam who are not native speakers of English (excl. myself), which is why one may in comments see how they greatly appreciate it. Don't know how difficult it is to add subtitles, however.

It's a little shame because I really like the last Imperial team. I think this the previously dominant teams are getting eliminated early this series.
Yeh! Manchester was pretty dreadful this year and Oxbridge teams are doing well. Imperial teams are always quite well-rounded and a likable bunch. I find that Scientists can be incredibly well-informed on Arts and Culture..while Humanities students are mostly rather ignorant on the Sciences.
aortablue true - I'm a PhD candidate in political theory but I'm absolutely useless in anything science related. I just don't understand it, and I honestly haven't had any classes in maths and/or science since I was 17.
What do you think is the main reason that a university of 30000 students cannot find a better team than a college of a few hundreds? Whatever the answers, it's a sign that the country continues in the trend of increasing inequality for at least another 50 years. These Imperial kids will become doctors, engineers, and scientists earning decent but relatively low wages. The Oriel kids will be writers, tv presenters, bankers, journalists, lawyers, politicians, making millions.

Watching this series so far - and earlier series - does classical music not play any part in the lives of today's youth. I ask as a senior citizen who was able to identify about 80% of the works but was interested in classical music and opera in my 20s.
Ballantyne Moyes As a college sophomore, for the most part, I listen to classical music while I study, but it's passive and it's on the radio so I don't associate the composer with the piece. I can tell you if I've heard a piece before or not, but I can't tell you who the composer is most of the time, let alone what it is called.
Christian: Thank you for your response. At least you are listening to such music. It's a bit like me with the popular music of today - I can recognise the tune but often have no idea of the artist and, indeed, when I see some names written, I don't know how to pronounce them as many radio stations just play the song as if everybody is in on the secret of who is singing/playing. :-)
Ballantyne Moyes In a way, I relate to that too. Today I just got back from driving around with my friends, and they were playing these songs that they all knew word-for-word, but I hadn't heard them before. I guess my music taste of classic rock, showtunes, and jazz is too eclectic in company.
Have since boyhood been keen mainly on classical music but (call me a barbarian if you will) have hardly ever been able to say who composed the pieces (incl. favourites), even less what the particular piece was called. It's simply of no interest to me.

All things considered this was a very poor performance from Goldman.
first performance on tv. Probably very nervous and you can see him visibly grow more confident as the episode progresses.
Pope is strong on the buzzer. That phylum answer was bordering on TOO hasty. Might kick him in the nuts in later rounds though.
