Shamelessly stolen from Applesorcez Channel - • 【Touhou】Bad Apple!! PV...
Reproducing it here as I thought I'd have a crack at a nice sound mix, I like what's been achieved here SO much. It deserves to be more widely viewed! So, credit to Applesorce, and Kara for the song, and Num_Kadoma for what I assume is the Video programming.
Thankyou everybody for coming to view this video over the last decade. In order to celebrate the lasting appeal of Bad Apple and Touhou musics, I thought it was time to upload another version. I'm sure there are many other videos already, but this one is mine. Featuring my first home computer. Thankyou for coming and please enjoy - th-cam.com/video/O-GGADUYmqo/w-d-xo.html

I forgot Famicom has more than 4 channels of audio.
I'm pretty sure this is just the standard 2A03 chip doing all the work. I mean, if he wanted to have more than 4 channels, he would used something like the VRC6, VRC7, Namco 163, or any other chip. He just did a really good job with what he had.
He did this on a powerpack. It doesn´t support soundchips, since it loads a rom file from a compact flash card and doesnt have any hardware in it.
it has 2 square, triangle, noise and DPCM channel
@@формула-пика and 6,cuz famicom has somesorta of dynamic/microphone that can play audio too for what the 6th channel is made

Imagine an NES game coming out back in the day with this as the intro.
People whould frick the hell out
Though i doubt it was even possible in the consoles prime(at least in a standart case). Back in the day big prom was very definition of luxury(it was the reason why market choose discs as main format later on) , and since console is pretty much very limited in terms of computational resources it would be pretty much unreasonable to expect to be able utilize advanced compressing techniques(procedural generation trick is not viable for the same reason).
"Press any button to skip"
"No, I don't think I will"
that song itself likely takes up the vasy majority of the spacr it has in the cartridge so it'd have to be some snes nes hybrid game
It would be a certified hood classic
For 8-bit system to do stunt like this. WOW. NES/Famicom/Pegasus/Dendy/etc. was awesome.
Family Game :)
If it weren't for memory limitations trying to cram a game on top of all the music, music on the FC/NES can be even more awesome. Imagine if NES music carts had been a thing. No game, but just using the entire cartridge space for music.
Pegasus? Im curious where was it called the Pegasus? I know about the Dendy but not Pegasus
@@Terumimi Mostly in Poland, Bosnia and Serbia. Some models were almost exactly like Japanese Famicom (just modified to be PAL compatible). While others had more 'original' look to them.

Touhou Fans: AW SHIT HERE WE GO AGAIN
What's Touhou about? I know only that it was a series of shoot'em ups and it had anime. I only recognise sakuya coz of knifes (coz of DIO)
@@remigiusznowak7277 welp you said it yourself
Touhou Project is a serie of danmaku (bullets hell) by the Team Shanghai Alice (with only one man in it, ZUN). It's very known for it difficulty and the huge number of different character, and without forgetting that ZUN kinda dont care of copyright, helping **alot** with doujin (fan works) so.
Bad Apple!! for exemple is first one of the song of the ost of Touhou 4 (the 3rd stage iirc). then peoples did cover/remix of it, the most known is the Alstroemeria version. and someone did a mv for it, which is the mv u just saw, that became really popular (like really. more than 25 millions views on NicoNico, its the most viewed video of NicoNico). and then cuz its a populat mv in the weeb/geek/whatever culture, and that its black and white (easier to adapt, and dont have to deal with converting colours etc), it became kind of a showcase mv used to show how much powerful old hardware is (so like doom. people are trying to play bad apple and jt mv on everything that can so make sound and have a screen)
@@remigiusznowak7277 oh wait just realised that u said "what is it **about**"
im dumb dont mind me.
and well its basicaly just "everyday life in gensokyo". (the world of Touhou)
Everyone have power in it etc. and so there's from time to time what we call accidents. thst something bad that happen in Gensokyo. (for exemple ethernal night).
And so the game are about "fixing" those incident. by talking (and fighting, but fighting is kinda how you hi to someone in Gensokyo sometime x) etc.
the most known character (Reimu) is the miko (a kind of priest) of the Hakurei sanctuary, and so she is the one that go fix those accidents. with the help of more or less peoples.
and for Sakura, she is the servant of Remilia Scarlet (a vampire). and yeah ZUN got inspired by Dio when designing her (even tho it was during a time JoJo wasnt mainstream, so he rlly did it cuz he liked the character) xD
hope that helped you

It's already a theme song for a game

I'm guessing this was made with animated background tiles right?
Looks like. Most of the bad apple ports I've seen use its ability to be compressed line by line to get it in the space, so it's binary encoded. And it looks the right kind of chunky to be either background tiles or, like, half background tiles sometimes.

wow i don't know nes/famicom can be so smooth for animating
@Fishe The NES is progressive, not interlaced. So it runs at a full 60FPS.
Is everyone getting recommended Bad Apple videos? I’ve seen Discord and now this.
There is a video of bad apple running on a calculator
I like how if you know the lyrics you can partially hear them.
people would have freaked out if they saw this in the past
Both Bad Apple!! and DOOM can run on everything.
Woah
I mean not to take away from this achievement because I have no idea where to even start but playing an animation is a lot easier than making a game (and it probably helps that it's just black and white)
@@ThatNormalBunny Playing the animation isn't the problem. It's memory constraints that are troubling. For a video game you have to store the program and the graphics, but generally you don't need an entire video worth of graphics which means that well the program will be slower running, it's more likely to be possible to store on the system itself.
Not only that smooth video but the recreation of the music on just the 5 channel 2a03 is amazing!
This is incredible. Definitely shows off all the potential of the Famicom and NES. Incredible work!
Привет вам из 2021. Bad apple жив в наших сердцах

Amazing what the MOS 6502 can do...
Indeed
It's so cool !!!!!
The track sound was nice!
Why is TH-cam waiting 10 years before putting this wonderfull video in my recommended feed...?
The fact that nes can support near cd quality audio via audio sampling, which means you didnt even have to use chiptune (but it would probably be too big for an nes cartridge, unless the powerpak supports oversize roms)
Edit: I saw the download link and yep, 768kb is way above the 40kb that the nes supports, so you could have used audio sampling
this is a very good use of the nes sound chip
I recently discovered this meme and seen at this video has 11 years make me old and thinking why this meme is popular in 2022/2023
ha ha I have the same TV :P Have you fixed overscans?? I can't figure it out :/ other than that it's a perfect TV for RGB :)
I don't have this tv around at the moment but I remember using the service menu to adjust the geometry settings. I just searched for the tv model numbers service manual, there was some code that bought it all up as an onscreen menu. You have to be careful though, take a pic of the original settings incase you adjust something and it all goes wrong.
What TV is it? I'm looking to get myself a CRT TV and this looks good.
Звучание шикарное!
подозрительно звучит как на музыкальном сопроцессоре, а что стояло в NES?
How exactly do people make these bad apple ports?
Manually drawing every frame of the animation in Code would take forever so there is obviously an easier more efficient way...
Does anybody know?
This song (or more like music in this one) feels like it's from an indie horror game given the tones and tune of the it's giving off. Anyway, I'm quite surprised that this showed up in my recommendations and it's still up, good job man.
I believe it's for a bullet hell game series! Touhou is what you're looking for
@@MadameTeqi Oh, thanks-- I knew it was from Touhou a little while after (playing Touhou LW) but it just gave that vibe to me at that particular time Idk what to tell of it xD
But ty for telling!
I want to thank my mom and dad to let me have this moment with the bois.
This was cool AF nice work
seems to use quarter tiles, so 256/4, 240/4
amount of frames: 6569
64*60*6569 bits
or 3153120 bytes, 3 megabytes uncompressed
it's definitely compressed, and used some real time decompression, very impressive for the NES
one of the hardest things in NES is that the nametables can't really be populated that fast, you can I think populate at most 1/4th of the nametable during the vblank. so this must also be using some pallet swap trickery. crazy..
also this probably won't fit into a single bank, so there's constant bank switching on top of that.
another thing is that a lot of mappers only allow colouring chunks of 2 tiles, not each tile individually which would make the pallet swap harder
Bad Apple is truly the DOOM of music
Nice, what's next? Bad Apple being played on my heart rate monitor? Because that'll be rad
Wow I wasn't aware the NES is capable of that!
This is the Japanese exclusive model of the NES called the Family Computer (Famicom), not the NES. It is more capable as it has more audio channels than the NES and produces better sound.
If i saw this in the 80s i would probably say RADICAL
This is actually really good

Fun Fact about the Famicom: The Famicom has an extra voice in its sound chip that allows more "detailed" sound that can make music a bit better. The Famicom's NTSC/PAL equivalent (The NES) doesn’t have this, that explains the reason why Famicom games have a better sound than their equivalent on the NES (primal example in this is the Castlevania series on the system).
The Famicom and american NES both have the same sound chip, but the Famicom supported sound expansions in the cartridges.
but having an extra sound channel didn't always improve the music imo (for example, Castlevania 2)
