Lots of people tried to vandalize it the entire time, but with the support of massive communities like OSU there were more than enough people to protect against all those attacks with ease.

I mean considering that it was constantly being developed, it would've been basically impossible to vandalize. Unlike static pixel art, which is drawn then maintained, the drawing of it is also the maintenance.

I forget the exact time frame, but essentially around every 20 seconds we would need to change the frame. Most frame changes were very minor, but since there was a 5 minute cooldown to change a pixel it still needed a large group of people. When it came to the yin yang and a couple other parts, the change per frame was significantly more. I forget the exact number again, but imagine ~50 pixel changes per frame. To do it we enlisted the help of many other communities as mentioned by the comment above
If you look at the basics, Osu is pretty much just a game about hitting the right parts of the screen at the right time. If anyone could pull it off its them. :D
i cant believe how good the yin yang spin came out i remember on stream it was so intense as the people were constantly pushing chat and making sure they were placing pixels. it was worth it this came out so good, im so proud of this community and everyone who came together to help😭
3:32 this is the best part imo, the amount of coordination it took to get the ying yang spin was crazy, since the pixels change so fast. I'm part of osu place, and I remember many pings going out telling people to get on, as this was easily the most intense part of the animation Also, I love that you can see the improvement over time. At the start, it's a bit choppy, but by the middle/end, it is insanely smooth
I love how in the beginning at 0:16 you can really see where they struggled with the sudden color changes but as the animation traction continued and more people chipped in, the color changes got so much faster. (2:00)

it's pretty cool to notice how at first there's fewer people contributing so big changes get very blurry and later on so many more people are doing it so it becomes really smooth even when there's a color flip

I placed a few pixels in this animation cuz it was my highlight of the event. From the Puyo/Tetris community, we thank you for this effort. Also our poor Tetris logo with a planned Puyo build was very much disrupted by the bots who built the building and the Morocco flag. I was very bitter about that.

I was there, wandering around where should I place my pixels, then I stopped at bad apple art, and decided to help them a little. It was nice, didn't know which frame is being drawn, so i only fixing the background
I was very proud that I participated this project from BTMC's twitch chat and the osu community. That last Yin and Yang spinning animation was the most intense 2/3 hours of my life and then everyone joined in to help all of us, it was magical man. Love touhou and bad apple!! ❤❤❤

As someone who not only contributed to the creation of Bad Apple, but also the Komi in the middle of the screen, I appreciate the effort of every gentlemen who worked on the project.
The fact everyone in the event, when they saw someone drawing Bad Apple on the canvas, everyone literally decided that they will not grief the bad apple animation but instead let it play out, what a wholesome crowd of r/place event participants :)

A template was shown by a program which displays the pixels and their locations on the canvas, the pixels still have to be manually placed

I feel like it wasn't disturbed that much because I think people thought that it's already messed up due to it's pixels constantly changing.
I don't know what was more "EPIC" to see.

As someone who not only contributed to the creation of Bad Apple, but also the Komi in the middle of the screen, I appreciate the effort of every gentlemen who worked on the project.

The fact everyone in the event, when they saw someone drawing Bad Apple on the canvas, everyone literally decided that they will not grief the bad apple animation but instead let it play out, what a wholesome crowd of r/place event participants :)

Wasn't apart of the communities that made this, but still helped out with most of it. It was fun working on it and I am happy I got to witness and help

Bad apple, manages to make a whole entire animation.

It's impressive how perfectly well accurate the timing is. They really did it frame by frame, pixel by pixel. Crazy.
They used a program to shows where to put the pixels
I like how the canvas pretty much instantly gives Spez the middle finger
