My two year old daughter was introduced to this song on a family road trip back in the 90’s. i looked in the mirror and saw her going absolutely postal in her child seat. Waving her arms and shaking her head to the music. She also had a mane of curly red hair. I was so proud!
I,m a Thamesman who has been living in Australia for over 40 years. I was at the concert before this one and have seen many bands that have come to Perth. There isn’t any band on the planet that has put on anything that comes close to Chisel live in their hay day.

Wow...Moss' ability to accompany, or echo, voice, with his guitar, seemingly in real time, because Jimmy seemed to be orchestrating in some unique sense of the word, is just...fckn lovely. And can anyone name a performance in which a lead singer and guitarist fed off of and synchronized so we'll, in what seemed to be pretty much a jam?

What Mossy is doing in that part is called "singing your lead", which obviously means that he's singing the notes he's playing in his solo. He's great at it.

One of the Cold Chisel concerts I went to (outdoor at Sidney Myer Music Bowl) Jimmy was a full bottle in and went under the stage to have a leak (singing all the while) and then climbed the full stack of speakers (about 20 feet) with a security guard ready to grab his belt if he nose dived. Performing perfectly at all times.

Wow watching that powerhouse performance it’s hard to comprehend that Jimmy is still with us today and absolutely thriving both in his career and personal life. 17 number 1 albums later, been married to Jane for the last 43 years and the author of several books ranging from his memoirs which were best sellers to cookbooks to a children’s book, still touring and collaborating with great artists around the world, and still so very relevant.

This song should have been written for Jimmy Barnes. It tells his story to a tee. He totally was a Wild Thing. And Mossy is also a legend he doesn't even miss a beat. Picking up on and playing sounds and screams coming from the audience even. The whole band just jamming while Jimmy runs amok.
It was astounding that despite how messy it looked they did not miss a beat!
It comes from a sense of survival… they,especially Barnsey were dragged up through life, their resilience was rock solid as long as they had each other. Often Steve ( drummer) and Jimmy would be left hooking and brawling backstage while the others are warming up..their amazing ability as a band to constantly butt each other to go faster, harder was bred through their hard experiences. They are the iconic Aussie pub band. US executives didn’t get them and still couldn’t hack them.

Yes.Their song ''You got nothing I want'' was wrote about their attempt to break into the American market but got rejected .I am pretty sure that is the story on what happened.First album release East was in 1978..40 years rocking with these guys...my favourite band in the world
The story is that Cold Chisel refused to be tamed down by the American recording companies who wished to shape them to suit an American market not they they were rejected. Cold Chisel just wouldn’t play ball.

the story behind America is that there agent was meant to bring the big wigs to there gig but instead went to a top producers dogs birthday party instead so hence missed the gig his agent tried to make it up with a bag of cocaine but Jimmy apparently just threw it in the crowd
Their 3rd studio album "East" was released in Australia in 1980 after their self-titled debut album in 1978 and "Breakfast At Sweethearts" in 1979.
The lead single in America from the album "East" was "My Baby" written by bass player Phil Small. When the band arrived in America, they discovered that the promotional copies of the single were wrapped in baby nappies, which didn't go down well with the band obviously. The executive of the record company who was supposed to meet them and see them perform live was called away to a DJ's dog's birthday party. As Barnesy sarcastically explains it in the Cold Chisel movie "Last Stand", it was very very important for him to attend that party. They came back from America and vowed never to go back there. Thank god for that 😄 The song "You Got Nothing I Want", written by Barnesy from their 1982 album "Circus Animals", was indeed about their American experience. At least they got a great song out of their American trip.

Listening to Cold Chisel playing the iconic surf venue Playroom on the Gold Coast. Eat ya hearts out grandkids. Absolutely nothing correct. Absolutely everything you now piously lecture us about! I'm in my mid sixties and I so remember gigs with AC/DC and Cold Chisel in our local town hall. Certainly blew the doors off but it's all we knew. Thank goodness we grew up on this kind of stuff. Everything else was tame. LoL
Same -Back in the early to mid 70's AC/DC would come up to Ballarat, do a gig on a Saturday night. The next morning they'd stop off at my Uncles Milk bar to buy meat pies on their way back to Melbourne.

I've been to many a Cold Chisel concert back in the day. Jimmy climbing up speaker stacks like a mountain goat and never losing tune was wild. Always a true rock out enjoy the frack out of life experience.
He was once a part time cat burglar so no surprise really that he can climb. 🤷♀️ True story - he wrote about in his books.
I went to a chisel concert and that was all I saw of him when he was on top of the speakers! Mind you I was sitting on the floor at the back by then..... yes alcohol may of been involved 🤣🤣🤣

@@TheThamesmen As you might already know, this version is part of Cold Chisel's movie "Last Stand", which showcased their last two concerts in December 1983 (when they originally split up). The movie was shown in cinemas sometime in the following year. The tag line is "The last ten years... the last great concert". I've got one of the original (I think) posters on a hard board backing on my wall. You should check the whole movie out, it's fantastic. I've listened to this version of "Wild Thing" so many times that I can literally (and I literally mean literally) play the song in my head from start to finish, word for word, chord for chord, note for note. Being a guitar player myself might help a little bit with that though. It's a great song to play loud in the car. It still gets the hairs on the back of my next raised. Thanks for highlighting it 👍

Much thanks for Wild Thing yes the best version by far. Like what you did for Kate Bush you could spend a week on Cold Chisel. When you get to "When the war is over " do a double as John Farnham does a version do a comparison both versions will blow you away. Jimmy and John both great mates. If you do a CC week some suggestions when the war is over, Saturday night, Flame trees, Choir girls, Breakfast at sweethearts, keh sanh and forever now. Mossy had it all, the voice, the song writing AAANNNNDDD next level guitar playing.
He'd be a superstar if born in the US.
Went to see a Rod Stewart concert in Melbourne,a number of years ago, and Ian Moss was the warm up act. As you can imagine 25000 people all talking, laughing, yelling etc wait for Sir Rod, all of a sudden this one guy walks on stage with a stool and guitar, plugs in and just starts playing. Man, the arena just went deathly quite as Mossy started to play and then sing, one guy, an amazing guitarist and superb voice! It’s hard to describe, but it felt like you were in an intimate blues club, not a 25k arena. I know Rod was good but damn I remember every minute of Ian moss being amazing.

They were wild back in the day. A wonder some survived. As you can see amazing live. Luckily Jimmy has calmed down and is still going strong. You should look,at some of the stuff he did in lock,down. He can sing a wide range of styles for sure, and his voice is only getting better.

He certainly took Wild Thing to a higher level, far more than The Troggs did. It was great to see Jimmy’s improvisations and what he and Ian Moss did together. I’m so glad that he made the lifestyle changes he did and took his talent onwards and upwards with RnB/soul. His version of When Something Is Wrong with My Baby, with John Farnham and Diesel, is a testament to him making a very wise decision. His duets with his son David Campbell also show this. Good on them all!
Cold Chisel was looking to going to America but Jimmy Barnes was told he was too loud and they were to colloquial, Jimmy Barnes answer to that was the song "you've got nothing I want" Cold Chisel is my ultimate band 😄

I was at this concert and there was no band who could compare live. They did go to US but US record executives pissed them off trying to tell them how to do it so they gave them the finger and came home. We were blessed to have them all to ourselves.

Pretty rare a cover is better but Chisel nail this. Spiderbait have a pretty diverse back catalogue but they do a cover of Black Betty that rocks and is better than the original. Keep up the great reacts guys.

Ahh such great memories of the early Chisel, they once trashed the set on Countdown (a top rating music show here) when asked to mime instead of performing live they refused and at the end of their song they completely trashed the set LOL This was a great memory of why working as a roadie or stage hand for Chisel required a black belt in crowd control and keeping the microphone cable free for Barnsey LOL..

You guys should have seen them perform this live at Albert Park, Melbourne 1981 I think, Jimmy climbed the speaker stack at least 7M high while performing Wild Thing then stood on top and rocked the stack back & forwards at least two meters! been a fan for over 40 years seen them many times.

Aaah, young Jimmy. He was generally a little 'off balance' by this end of the show. The rest of the band just dealt with it on stage, but as you say, the crew really earned their money. His performance didn't suffer though, and we were all young then so we didn't give a shit, we were all drunk anyway, lol.
Ain't that the truth... I remember going to Hungry Jacks, before seeing them at Memorial Drive in Adelaide, buying the biggest coke, emptying it out and filling it with vodka 🤣🤣🤣🤣

You guys should try and arrange an interview with Jimmy Barnes for your channel. I think you will find him accommodating. Especially how you have only just discovered Cold Chisel and his mate John Farnham along with other Aussie rock music, and you are about to do a 3rd Aussie Week. With you guys on the West Coast makes the time zone difference to Aust. East Coast that little bit easier.

Yours is a question we Aussies always ask. Why aren’t they one of the biggest bands in the world? I think it has something to do with an early disagreement with a US record label. They came home & recorded “You Got Nothing I Want” as a FU! Love these guys.

Did you remember or realise chisel played in London at Hyde Park Calling in 2012. It was the Friday and they were on before Soundgarden. There’s some clips around of this. They also did a few select gigs afterwards at sheperds bush, Manchester (?) and Glasgow.
You’re absolutely right. Us Aussies were rocking our arses off to Cold Chisel through the 70’s & 80’s and still now. Every party you every went to we all rocked to Cold Chisel. Probably the most legendary band in Australia.

This was either last song or last before encores in their final days of the Last Stand tour. They’d already broken up, but went out with an absolute bang.
It’s at the Sydney Entertainment Centre, which if I remember rightly was about a 10,000 seat venue, but you can tell from the stage floor, they treat it as another pub gig. Black painted stage floor, gaffer tape and the rest, all set up to be nothing flash. The spectacle was the band, stripped down to instruments, amps, mics, and speakers, a riser for the drums (and maybe Don on keys, t-shirts, jeans, sneakers, singlets and copious amounts of sweat. It could have been in a rehearsal room for all the ‘trimmings’ they had on stage.
But the crowd sang every song, and the band once again gave them every ounce.
As much as I love them, and as much as people love to say Jimmy sounds just as good nowadays, it’s not strictly true. He had a better range of soul to scream back then, probably peaking around the East and Circus Animals albums. But you can’t take away from him the fact that he’s got a voice like no other. It was born for flat out rock and roll.
Australia has done well with Scottish immigrants. AC/DC has been full of them, Jimmy Barnes and his brother John Swan (Swanee). Colin Hays from Men At Work, George Young from The Easybeats. There seemed to be something magical that happened when these kids from Scotland grew up here.
Yes, they were exposed to the Aussie culture of a fair go!

best ever stage entry - Barnsey slung on the pole under a motor bike riding up the highwire over the audience (before OH&S was invented) with a microphone in one hand and most of a bottle of vodka in the other, all under a Bullens Circus tent. wentworth park, sydney, i think 1983. opening support act was the actual circus - even the elephants must have been stoned on the fumes.
This track is from the 80’s by the look of the lineup - specifically Steve Prestwich (RIP) on drums who was with the band from the outset until 1983. Always a live favourite, this track was available on the live EP ‘You're Thirteen, You're Beautiful, and You're Mine’, which I still have.

The song was done by an American band, and nobody noticed. Then a British band, The Troggs did a cover in 1966 that was a world wide hit. There have been lots of covers but it wasn't until Cold Chisel unleashed their version that we really saw the WILD really put into the song. Jimmy with half a bottle of scotch under his belt, and the poor stage hands who had to make sure that mic cable never disconnected, the Chisel version makes The Troggs version look tame.

It made me smile the "headies" tale.
I worked for a British company for 8 years and, as an Aussie, you blokes would say some stuff that would make us cringe.....such as "I'm ducking outside for a fag" or "I really need a fag" or "I need to be sucking on a fag". Yes, smoking is filthy.
Those 8 years were bloody great, the banter between Brits and Aussies was brilliant.

As a born and bred Aussie, who still lives in Australia, I grew up on Chisel. I'm 52 years old now and I've been listening to them since I was 12 years old. It was my cousin who introduced me to them, which I'll be forever grateful to him for.
I met Barnesy and his wife Jane a couple of years ago and they are the nicest, friendliest people you could meet. I've also met Ian Moss and Phil Small quite a few years ago as well. Also 2 very decent blokes.
So I'm biased when I say that Cold Chisel are the best band in history, in my humble, yet subjective, opinion. I play guitar purely because of Mossy. In my opinion, he is the 2nd best guitarist in history, behind only Jimi Hendrix. I've seen them live about half a dozen times and needless to say, they were fantastic everytime. Everyone should check out their whole catalogue. There isn't one bad song in there!

There is a great special on 60mins Australia and they talk about how they regret not making it in the States. At the time they didn’t want to do the 3-5 years of the small clubs slog in the States.... They were already huge in Australia. Anyway as someone else had posted before, “we gave the world AC/DC and kept the best for ourselves”... 😂
