- In today's Laos travel vlog, we are in Vientiane - the capital city of Laos. We have only 48 hours to explore before our visas expire and we head back to Thailand.
We intended to visit some popular attractions around the city, but unexpectedly, our plans changed. We attempted to motorbike to Buddha Park but could not do so after two back-to-back interactions with traffic police left us frazzled.
Our last night in Vientiane didn't go as planned, but we enjoyed our time in Laos and are sad to leave after thirty days in this beautiful and culturally rich country.

Not just westerner. A lot of Thai tourist also get extorted by Laos officials. Laos needs to fix this problem asap because Laos is a really beautiful place. I hope we can improve relationship between neighbors soon. It’s not fun to be mad at each other. I want to travel to Laos so bad but I don’t feel safe. I hope things will get better soon. Wish the best for Laos anyway.
It is a shame that police corruption taints Laos’ reputation, because most of the people were very warm and welcoming. Hopefully one day you’ll feel safe enough to explore there. Laos is such a beautiful country. 💕
@@mikeandashley Not suprise you guys.😁😁😅😅There're so many westerners not even them but Thai people also.We got so many bad expienced with this so many years but the Laos government never fix this problem.you need to call the police (If they're not a thief by themselve😁)some of the tourists got scammed so many places while travel all around this country.Believe me Thai people got hurt of these things we knew it and lost the money a lot to this for long time.Anw.I can only can tell even you travelling in Thailand also you need to find out about the safety or every scamming before you go everywhere while travelling aroud Se.Asia.Good Luck and Have a nice trip in Laos.

Officer in Laos is trying to make money for the new year, I guess. I heard, sometimes they don't get paid until 2 months..their pay rate is hundreds dollars something a month. No excuses, but that's their way.. please don't them ruined your Lao trip. Hope you be back safely next time

Thailand also has many tourist attractions such as Pattaya, Rayong, Chanthaburi, Trat, Koh Chang, Kanchanaburi, Mon Bridge, World War II Historical Bridge, Erawan Waterfall, Hua Hin, Khao Yai .And in Thailand in 2023, Koh Kradan is ranked number 1 in the world, the most beautiful beach in Trang Province in the south of Thailand. I've been following your clips all along. But only saw the clip of the northern part of Thailand. You guys have not traveled to half of Thailand yet. Thailand has a lot of street food in almost every province. food hygiene safe travel destinations Don't be afraid of the police extorting tourists' money.

You don't have to be afraid of the police trying to extort money from you in Laos either. It is not common and doesn't happen all the time luckily. In general Laos is a very safe country with many beautiful things to see and no mass tourism like in several of Laos' neighboring countries. Lao food is healthy, fresh and tasty as well.

Small towns like Luang Prabang and Vang Vieng are a must. Amazing natural scenery, historical sites, and French colonial architecture. Don't forget the islands in the south. Don Det Island and Don Khong island.
We LOVED Luang Prabang and Vang Vieng! We didn’t get a chance to explore the south, but we have plans to return (hopefully soon!). 🥰

From my experienced travelling in Laos, we'd like to take our car to Vientiane. At the border, borders officers told us not to do it! So we decided to rent car, and about 3 Kilometer from the border got stop by police and have to pay enter fee 100 baht each person👮👮
I was many times in Laos all over the country but never expected this!

Yea, food poisoning is common when traveling, but Ashley got sick at a western restaurant while eating tomatoes from a salad. 😩 It certainly wasn’t fun. But Laos is amazing, you should go if you have the chance! 🙌

OMG, sorry you guys had a bad experience in Laos. I've been to Laos twice and I was fortunate to not have any issue like that. Now I have to think twice before going back there again. I am a Lao American. The first time I went which was 10 years ago and I was very dissatisfied with something, I didn't want to say or complain too much and reminded myself that it was still a communist country and they could do whatever the hell they wanted to me. Living in the US and if you go across the border to Mexico sometimes you get scammed by the police too. I hope you guys have a better stay in Thailand.
Thanks so much. We were in Laos for 30 days and had a wonderful time overall, we just got unlucky our last few days in Vientiane. We definitely hope to go back one day, we’ll just be a bit more cautious and make sure to carry photocopies of our passports when driving around. 😅

I am Lao myself , but grew up in US and I am US Citizen. Before I felt uncomfortable when I entered Laos. They didn't considered me as Lao, since I am US Citizen. But the locals are ok just pray and be safe. Every where you go

OMG. I'm guessing you guys heading down to Wat Xieng Khuan. Yes, in Laos they usually do that to people. I and my driver got stopped twice. Both times we paid them. Thanks for sharing with us!
Oh wow! We got lucky that the second officer let us off without paying, but we were too nervous to continue driving. It was a shame because we had only been on the road for about 20 minutes and had a full day planned, but it happens. We’re just glad we were able to explore Laos more freely outside of Vientiane. 😅

Yes, thanks for posting. Many others have encountered this extortion ploy. These scumbags just don’t think or have any concerns about others. How’d they like to go around town paying 100,000 kip at every traffic police stop? If it was legit, the 1st police stop should have given some kind of a receipt 🧾 for you to show at the next station, if stopped again. This couple did the right thing by returning the rental after the second stop. Otherwise they’d had ended up paying at every traffic station. This is shameful and ridiculous.

Yeah, it was a bit intimidating. It was also our first time ever dealing with this sort of thing. If this happened again in the future, we will ask the police to write us a ticket, but we were too shocked/afraid this time around and figured it was easier to just pay the money and be on our way. Such a crazy situation!

Would recommend you to visit some parts too, different places give you different feelings. Vientiane itself has places far from the city, generally it takes 20-30 mins driving, however Vang Vieng and Luang Prabang all for tourists to travel around the town on their own too. Thanks for visiting us. And looking forward to welcoming you in person sometimes soon.

It happens! We were bummed, mainly because of two stops back to back and not having a way to show the second officer that we’d already been stopped. We really wanted to see the Buddha park! I think the average person in Laos is cute. Except for government officials you have to be extra careful. They like to charge you for no reason.

Thanks for visiting Laos. This case can be happened everywhere around the world. There are good and bad. I travelled from Northern to Southern of Laos. The police stopped me without any fine, they just need to check documents.
We understand there are good and bad people everywhere, and we were lucky to meet a lot of kind, welcoming people in Laos. We also realized it was our fault for not carrying photocopies of our passports, so we weren’t upset about receiving a fine, only a little wary about the process. 😊

Some traffic police may not understand well about the term of tourism as well as English communication. I would like to experience riding in other countries to see how police action when seeing tourists..!..How about Thailand and Vietnam have you been riding.?
We’ve driven in Thailand without problem. Also Luang Prabang and Vang Vieng. We were too nervous to drive in Vietnam, so we only took busses there. We hope to return to complete the Ha Giang Loop on motorcycle though, so we’ll see. 😊

Your experience in Lao PDR. I'm Thai, so I'm not too surprised. Thai people who cross to travel have come across something strange. I went to Vientiane Rent a scooter like you Riding to Vang Vieng, when I parked my car, someone stole it even though it took less than five minutes. After notifying the police and following up with the person who stole the car He came back to demand money for the ransom of the car. The police should catch him he stole. But the police made me pay the ransom. OMG. Am I in a parallel world with other people? And everyone around insisted that I have to pay. Even the owner of the scooter that rented me insisted on not paying. If the owner of the scooter wants to get the car from the thief Some Laotians came out and attacked me for making a big deal. If I hadn't crossed over to Laos, it wouldn't have happened. The attitude of an uneducated person I vowed to myself that I would never set foot in this country again. If people are uneducated and don't give up on the communist regime, it's usually a long break for several days. Thai people often cross to travel. Lao PDR. A lot. We don't often go together now. because he lives in a world parallel to Thailand About the Lao police like to extort foreigners, they think it's normal.

I was caught driving without a license in Thailand and it cost me something like 2000 baht, 100k kip is so much more affordable
That’s wild! Yea, it certainly wasn’t the price that got us. It was the manner in which it was done and the fact that we got pulled over again, for no reason at all five minutes later. And still that wasn’t the whole deal, the food poisoning is really what iced the cake for this day. 😂 2000 baht is a hefty fine. That’s pretty crazy.

In USA, the state where i live, police pulled people over all the time to issue tickets for their month end quota. Let's be honest, not just just having issues with police.
Yup! Don’t get us started on the police in the states 😅 Of course it’s not all of them. Just because you have one bad egg, it doesn’t mean the bunch is off.
