I did this 18 yrs ago but got to Laos from Nong Khai. I did make sure to avoid getting a fake visa made up out the front of the Thai embassy by a vendor selling such visas at the same price as the embassy’s visas. The Thai embassy was very easy to deal with, very quick service, no dramas whatsoever. Love your vids. Keep going strong. ⭐️

Nong Khai from Vientiane is the easiest way to do a visa run in my opinion. You just pay a bit for the shuttle bus across the bridge and back and you can only pay in Thai currency, not Kip

Paddy - Great video, I am new to your channel. As noted in the comments the same thing has happened in Sihanoukville and even Ha Long Bay Vietnam. We call it silent colonialism. Also, it is known as zero dollar tourism. Specifically, what happens is the Chinese bring in all chinese construction workers (sometimes N Korean as well - great BBC documentary on this BTW) while promising jobs to locals, which is a lie. Then all the workers need food, so they open Chinese restaurants owned by the Chinese forcing out local restaurants. At the end of the construction, you have Chinese owned hotels, chinese owned restaurants, and Chinese owned gift shops. When the Chinese come to visit, ZERO dollars end up being spent on locally provided goods and services, hence the name. It is happening all over SE Asia and it is heartbreaking.

Kings Roman is pretty dodgy alright…
There’s tons more dodgy casinos at lots of Thai land border crossings. Laos, Cambodia and Burma. It’s a bit of fun going especially the people watching aspect.
If you want to check out some more proper dodgy ones, then Poipet on the Cambodian border has lots of them. Also Mae sot/Myawaddy on the Burmese border has a little mini vegas strip. It’s a 10 second boat trip across the Moei river. No passport or visa required.

Yep we randomly went there too attempting to have a quick visit to laos and being drawn by a spectacular looking building across the river. I can completely vouch for that place being the weirdest place ive ever visited also. A genuine soulless Chinese bubble in lao. We didnt enter that super casino but after half an hour in china town we realised something was definitely off and sinister in the shadows. Caught a glimpse of a very rough looking burmese labour encampment on the taxi ride out of town. Was very relieved to get back into Thailand.

@@carlruppert7324There's nothing weird about the place except that it's a very densely built up area out of nowhere. Lum Nam Tha area and Phongsali are very rural provinces where you heaps of tribal people in their tribal clothes then bam suddenly u have Las Vegas in the middle of the jungle and little towns. But that's because they cater to the Thai gamblers and now Chinese that come over from the border or have set up shop in the country. Thailand was doing that in the border zones way before the Chinese. Casinos open up at the fringe border towns with Thailand because gambling is illegal in Thailand. What adds to the allude here is that it was the lawless golden triangle area of the 80s and 90s. It's just a tourist infested Disneyland now. The drugs are still there though. Yaba and Ice etc. Don't have Khun Sa or remnant KMT army growing poppy anymore.

It’s dangerous to use the atm machines in casinos and bars or restaurants to withdraw money because once the card is entered they will scan and clone the card and recognize the PIN number, only use the ATM in the real banks of the bank card, you should now check the money in the bank daily , go to the bank and ask for a new account and new card and new PIN, many people make this mistake

  • @andrewdunbar828

Usually the fees at the border are cheaper in US dollars than in Baht. But that might only apply to fees in the neighbouring countries. I usually take some with me, or I buy some at SuperRich in Thailand, which always offers the best exchange rates. There's casinos right next to borders all around there. There was a small one in Cambodia just over the Thai border. I talked to some guys in a cafe who work there and they told me most of the punters are Chinese and Thai because gambling is illegal in China and Thailand and people with dirty money love gambling and Cambodia has lots of Chinese businessmen, expats, etc lately. There was a gigantic casino complex just on the Lao side of the border with China that China finally told Laos to close down after all kinds of murders due to drug deals gone wrong and whatnot. I used to like exploring it when crossing that border. Last time the whole area was being redeveloped as part of China's Belt and Road initiative. I think the new train line was going to go through there. There were some videos on TH-cam of that casino both while it was open and while it was abandoned.
Anyway dude I'd love to see you explore Laos a bit at some time and meet the people there. Going to Isaan first is a great intro because Isaan people are so friendly and there culture is like the rest of Thailand but also has much more in common with Laos.

But the starched shirt, chinos, shiny shoes, and the fact he addressed me in English sent my spidey senses tingling. When he asked me - in a street full of food stalls and restaurants - whether I knew anywhere he could eat - I was made yet more suspicious. He asked where I was from. "Scotland!! Ah, I am just back from St Andrews!!!" Mmm. Really?🤔 Anyway, once he was convinced I was just a hapless cheapskate he let me go. I'd also been quizzed by (my neighbour told me) a retired cop on the train. Be in no doubt; if you do something stupid they will have you!

Just a little correction on your visa terminology : you didn't "extend your visa" with 30 days by doing a quick trip across the border (known as border bounce).
Your visa or visa exempt was about to expire, and with your border bounce you got a new permission to stay by way of visa exempt which gave you 30 days. (meaning this trip must have been before October, because now you get 45 days). A 30-day extension would have been done inside Thailand (which you may have already done ?)
So coming back in Thailand your previous visa has been used up completely and you got a permission to stay 30 days, for which you got a stamp where you will find ผ.30 in it.
Australia, Austria, .......

Purely built for Chinese who sail down the Mekong because gambling is outlawed in China and designed to line the pocket of corrupt officials. Best avoided but it is an experience. Sadly Laos is being exploited by it's powerful neighbour.

How is it that you're allowed to just pay to enter Laos? The Laos embassy site says "Tourist visas valid for 30 days can be obtained on arrival at Vientiane and Luang Prabang International Airports, and at the Friendship Bridge between Nong Khai Thailand and Vientiane Laos. Passport photographs are required for a visa on arrival. All other crossing points require a valid Lao visa already in the passport, which must be obtained from a Lao Embassy abroad." You weren't entering from any of those points and didn't say anything about passport photos, so it appears you entered by some method the Laos Embassy doesn't mention online.

You said immigration was friendly on the way out but how was the mood on re-entry? Seems like you just left for a few hours. And you make it sound like you are on Visa Exempt, which surprised me.. but shouldn't the stamp be good for 45 days at the moment?

Immigration building was closed last time I was there. You can travel across for a day without paperwork as long as you come back, but I totally would've taken a visa extension at the time! Also the Laos casino area is weird and we should tell everyone how weird it is and to not go. Go somewhere else in Laos to have a good day. You can hear them blaring music as if it is cool from the other side of the river at night but then you see that it is a self-contained stage park with no actual Laos people in the area and no culture, because it is overtaken by the Chinese casinos. Also also, I'm pretty sure we almost got mugged but ran away from a sketchy taxi situation. My afterthought was that Myanmar would have been safer. That says a lot at time of writing.

Dude, no pictures in the casino or parts of the casino is standard practice from Macau to Vegas. This also looks like a basic casino. You should do your next visa run to Macau. Macau sucks but at least you'll see how casinos work.
