  • I demo and discuss two effective techniques for creating ambient guitar swells. Super cool sounding and definitely foundational as you master the basics of ambient guitar.

    Thanks to your videos, I just bought my first ambient guitar pedals, a DOD Compressor, Behringer Overdrive, Kazan Booster Fuzz for a few unique flavors mixed in, Ernie Ball Volume pedal, and a Grand Canyon delay. Powered by a Pedaltrain Volto power supply. Can’t wait to start really learning to play ambient guitar

    I was doing this over 40 years ago: Les Paul > Ross grey compressor > Morley > analog delay > Fender Twin Reverb. Don't like the volume knob technique because it restricts what you can do with your hand(s). Controlling volume with your feet (I use both) leaves both of your hands completely free for the guitar (and/or additional equipment). In 2020, we can copy this with DAW software. But that's a PITA. I prefer to play real instruments rather than computer code. : )

      Controlling volume in daw is PITA, no automatic solution, only drawing volume lines, or recording volume pedal movements...

    I recently restarted with my ambient guitar journey again after some years and I'm enjoying it a lot! I actually learned to play swells with my volume knob after hearing Andrew Latimer from Camel do it in his music. It inspired me! I also have had a volume pedal by Ernie Ball for years but never used it, untill now. And I love it!

    I love swells with a heavy fuzz. It gets you some great synthy sounds if combined with some delay and/or reverb. And if you use a fuzz that doesn't clean up at lower volumes (like a Big Muff), there's no problem using the volume pedal (or in my case, the volume knob on the guitar) before it.

    I’ve been rooting around in my Pedal box for some ambient board options, it threw up some happy surprises, firstly the EHX Metal Muff! I’d bought it some time ago simply because it was so inexpensive & found it really does the “synth-like” base tone well ,who knew?....so I wondered what other affordable ambient options I might have.....so I came up with this signal chain; Bespeco volume pedal ( just works well) Metal Muff, TC Flashback mini, Boss DD7, Digitec Polara reverb, Mooer micro looper. Now I’m not knocking clearly excellent products from companies such as Strymon, but this pedalboard in its entirety has about the value of one and a half of their offerings, and I’ve had such fun putting a dedicated ambient board together I thought I’d say thanks to you & wondered if you might see if you could do the same for your fans? Do you have any older pedals which could be brought out of retirement to demonstrate an affordable ambient board? I would recommend trying to anyone 👍🎸🇬🇧

    One more thing - have you tried using tapping with swells? I'm not a fan of the stereotypical "shred" tapping, but it works great with swells. Especially that you can pull off things that are not possible otherwise, e.g. swell in notes from low and very high frets at the same time using both hands.
    And thanks for all your awesome videos! :)

      I am not a tapper, however, seem like a great idea/technique to me.

    Your distortion sounds so smooth... Is it because of the compression before the distortion pedal?

  • @crestonhorses2365
    @crestonhorses2365 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    That's helpful. Besides the volume pedal, my 'pedal board' is entirely virtual right now so it looks like I'm going to hybridize these techniques with the tone qualities of the volume knob position in the signal chain and the convenience of the pedal. Unless there's some crazy way of bringing signal out of the DAW effects chain into the volume pedal and back to the DAW???

  • @SimonTheShiatsuGuyHenderson

    I like that you're not a pedal snob... Mine are all cheap Chinese pedals, due to budget constraints... But they're pretty ok...

  • @gary_stavropoulos
    @gary_stavropoulos 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    When you lay faster I would call it more of a tremolo effect with the way the notes are cut off.

  • @EduAlexification
    @EduAlexification 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    what about putting the volume pedal before the drive? would that work, giving those extra dynamics that you can achieve with the volume knob without having the disadvantage of losing fingers to play?
    I've used this far only the volume knob technique. It is the cheapest! But my potentiometer is losing its smoothness and doesn't sound clean anymore :/
    Thank you for this video! It was very informative. The sounds are beautiful

    Hi there,
    It is stated in your description,
    It's a morley 20/20 wah/volume pedal, but the one you used in the video is the little alligator.
    I'm confused.
    Also one quick question,
    I'm planning to buy the 20/20 Morley, do you think it is a good idea?

    • @chordsoforion
      @chordsoforion  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unfortunately, the Little Alligator is no longer available, so the 20/20 series is the closest thing that you can buy. And yes, the 20/20 pedals are great.

    On topic, Do you prefer the volume pedal post overdrive or pre overdrive?

    • @chordsoforion

      Normally post overdrive for me. If you want more of the volume knob dynamic, then pre overdrive is the way to go.

    Hi, Bill. I have a question. I bought the Power Wah Volume 2020 and I'm not sure about the signal chain. In the video, you used the Morley Alligator volume pedal instead of Power Wah Volume 2020. I have plans to use both functionalities (Wah and Volume) so Would you still leave it after the compressor? Thanks in advance

    • @chordsoforion
      @chordsoforion  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I suggest trying it out in different places in the signal chain to see what works best for you. I generally keep wah pedals after compressor and distortions.

  • @Gabriel_Quesney

    Sorry Bill, but there is something I don't understand. What is the concrete difference of putting the volume pedal at the beginning not in the middle? I put it at the beginning and I can make swells. what is the difference. thank you very much in advance

    • @chordsoforion
      @chordsoforion  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you put the volume pedal at the beginning of the chain such as you do, it behaves just like the volume control, in that the gain structure changes as you increase the swell. Nothing wrong with that - it's just a different sound. I would suggest experimenting with it so you can hear the difference. Also, here's a video I posted on the subject: th-cam.com/video/jsuKmAJo3Qc/w-d-xo.html

    • @dlsansoni3298
      @dlsansoni3298 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Also if your Volume pedal is before the compressor then the compressor will actually "grab" the quieter parts of your swell and boost them making the dynamic range of the swell smaller. This essentially makes the volume pedal into a treshhold control for the compressor. Volume before/after drive is a personal taste thing but it definitely needs to come after the compressor.

    Do u plug in through the front or have the delay and reverb in the fx loop?

    • @TheMachinesWon
      @TheMachinesWon 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I know u use the amp modeler but what would u suggest for those using amps 🤗

    • @chordsoforion
      @chordsoforion  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you are using distorted amp sounds, then I would put the compressor and distortion into the front end of the amp, and the delays and reverbs in the effects loop if you have one. The volume pedal can go into the effects loop if it sounds good there or in the front end of the amp after the compressor and distortion. If your amp tone is always clean, then you can run everything in front or split it and use the effects loop. I would try both to see what you like best.
