Hey, How's it going everyone? I'm Phlinger Phoo and today we are going to discuss which taming pen to use and why in Ark: Survival Evolved!. There are quite a few different types of pens and these are some of the ones I like to use the most when recording my videos.

This video was super helpful. I used the first one on a dire bear and it worked perfect. When a terror bird attacked the unconscious bear it hit the windows instead and the bear didn’t lose any taming effectiveness. Thank you for making this great video.

Oh man. I WAY overcomplicated my argy taming pen. As a fellow single player this is super helpful. A lot of other videos for taming pens don't tell you how many you need of each piece so this was great thank you
don't forget, any taming pen that uses a hatch (for dropping in wild dinos), doesn't work for local single player as you're not allowed to pick up wild dinos. Single Player only allows you to pick up tamed creatures
Adwin Van Loo not true xD there's a tick box option for "allow flyer carry PvE" (or something like that) which enables that option in single player. I've been using it since I got the game lol

lol. single player settings are the same as pvp and allow flyer carry by default, you'd have to select 'pve mode' to stop it before selecting 'allow flyer carry pve' to get it back.. when you're single player is there really any need for pve rules?

@@Phlinger late, but i know a way to improve, although it's expensive. Make all metal, replace dino gate with behemoth (with ceiling being a little higher than the gate) and boom, now the only thing it cannot be used for are quetz, except if you have either rare flowers or pheromones (eat flowers or fire phero on flyer so quetz follows in both cases) and titano.

For Argie traps I just use 5 stone gateways and 2 reinforced gates. Just line them up, leave enough space between them to go through on foot, and put a gate on each end. It's cheaper than what's shown in the video, and is better for building on the fly b/c it only weighs 28 (while what's shown in the vid weighs 120)
That pen works for a lot of stuff. I’ve used variants of it for everything from ankys to argents to even a baryonyx (though that requires tighter gates and more of them)

As a solo player, I'll definitely be using these, especially to replace all the dinos I had when my world got corrupted on Saturday (RIP over 135 hours of work since Christmas, when I bought it).

Overall pretty good but I have a few things I would suggest. For the raft look up how to lower foundations into the raft, not only will that give you a lower base to build on but when done properly it should protect the raft itself too. Then you can build a smaller version of the trap you used on the stego, with a dino gate, and move the raft where it's needed. The last taming pen looks really nice but I don't see and advantage to the pillars and window frames. I would just use window frames on the bottom layer and door frames the rest of the way up. That will still work just fine and it is much easier to build. I've added a "funnel" out of sloped ceilings on top to help the dino fall into the trap and some one or two high fences inside to restrict their movement more.
Since you have SPlus the easiest thing you can do I would think to make the fence foundation straight is to make 2 more foundations then pick up the one in the middle. Then make a wall and a ladder. Then you climb the ladder and pull out your fence foundation, then your fence foundation will have no choice but to be 100% straight and should also align true center of where the pillar is save for it jumping to a snap point.
I only tested this on irrigation pipes, but I assume it should be the same concept.
By the way as someone who picked up Ark a 4 months ago and am still a new player, your videos have helped me out immensely on my single play through.

S+ you can use G to select snap points. ie when doing the Fence Foundations pressing G will set it to a straight snap pressing it again goes to 45* then 90* etc etc etc
Anything bigger than a stego can be tamed with a dinosaur gate trap. Just three gates in a u then close it off when you run through. Also use door frames instead of windows, gloves you better aim range and can go in and our without worrying about anything getting in.

Tried to make it today, did most in S+, but couldn't do the dino gates in S+, but non-collision and regular couldn't fit a gate like you did, at ground level. It wanted a whole other angle and couldn't be palced. I ended up putting it just outside and putting angledfence foundations, so it wabbled out a bit - it's okay. Thanks for the video for sure tho!

Hey oh phlinger for my trap I did the exact same but I added this thing where I can go on top of the trap and shoot the Dino until tranquilizer but is to be used only for small Dino’s or medium not for large ones like the rex or spino
I always wanted a thylacleo but I did not want to tame it in the red wood forest cause it's to dangerous but now I can tame the thylacleo anywhere with the raft taming pen

Even though Im commenting this late, I would just like to say that I have tranq’d and tamed a rex in a *2x2* raft trap (and it’s 2 windows high of course)

The big one im guessing have to build a ramp if want to tame a rex using it since it cant fit through the normal dino gate it would need to fall through the top
My way of taming dinos, which my friends call pointless, is by using a motor boat with three foundations wide, a point at the front, and going all the way back to where it ends. Four walls high with a normal Dino gate way forming a nice four by three. And to finish off the design I continue around the ship with two walls high. The only dinos that I can’t tame are those that can’t fit through normal Dino gateways
4 foundations 8 door frames and 2 ramps for anything small. 4 or 5 dino gates 2 doors for argy or griffon . For rex giga allo 4 dino gates 2 bear traps. Eezy peezy and can place newhere in short notice.
Easy thyla trap. 2x2 window wall trap under them on tree. Use fence foundation supports and go two high on walls. Get it close to tree so you only need 3 sides worth of structures. Get back and shoot it and watch it drop into trap. Sit back and tranq it.
I thought thylas pounce on u when u get close. How do u build this trap w/o them biting u?
I made a taming boat, a few years ago... I was working on it again, and when I was a trying to put the gate on. It refused to snap. It seems they changed what can snap to a raft.
Dude, the hyena trap, there's a leftover green one on my single player island thats 140 that I've been chasing since the Christmas event but always get attacked by something that it runs me into.
hmm. it's not classy, but I just use stone dino gates spaced just far enough apart so that I can fit between them, like a hallway, with doors on either end to cap it. it's quick, dirty, and it works for anything bigger than you that can fit through a gate.
If you get too close, can you get attacked through the window frames by a large dino? Trying to build one on a boat and we won't have much space to stand back.
Personally I just build five walls up and just sit in the top of the last wall it works every time

Literally place the stone fence foundation in the right place make it all the way around snapped and all and as soon as i destroy the first one, it destroys all the rest

to all of the people that say "I just sit up high and pelt it with tranqs", or "I have high movement speed and just shoot it with tranqs"...what do you do when it runs? To me, the pen is for when it runs. Regardless of the height you are when you start, or the speed you can run, you still have to chase it down when it runs...into a terrible situation? How do you deal with that? serious question, btw.
I'd rather do Number 2 with a stone doorframe, because it just saves a little bit of time farming stone

With the hyena trap, do i need to clear the general area
the hyenadon trap is silly since you can pick up one with the argent lol - 5 years later
I just use 4-5 dino gates and 2 doors for the argis
Btw there’s a trick to making stuff straight. Place a ladder climb it get off and boom your straightened.

Would not work with some dinos but yes to some!
Dino will run away when you tranq it hard, also the idea is that its safe from predators

Bummer. I was really hoping you'd show how to trap a tapajara and queirz.
Tapejaras will aggro on you if you eat rare flowers. So using an Argentavis pen should work for Tapejaras too. I don't know if Quetzes aggro on you too when eating rare flowers, but if they do, just make the Argentavis pen but bigger. If they don't, you can solo tame them by seating in the passenger seat of the Tapejara and command him first to attack the Quetz and as soon as it is flying command him to go to a certain point. If you stay in reach of the Quetz, you can just shoot it and follow it as it tries to escape. Works like a charm. The only thing is that you can't control very good where the Quetz is gonna fall. But just put down some woodden or metal spikes around your Quetz and it should be protected well enough.

so do you have to fill it in with stone foundations on the biggest one or can you just use wood or no foundations?
You don't have to fill in the middle. I just do it because it looks better and I hate having to jump over the lip when something is chasing me.

The fences create a snap spot in the middle of the foundation.
Or you can do what i do and make one trap that can trap ANYTHING
I just have one question, is there a way to get a rex back out of the all-service pen? It would be kind of unfortunate to constantly have to break the pillars or gate to get the rex back out once it's tamed, or any big dino you need to behemoth gate on top for.

This video could of used views from the sky so we can see how good it looks from the air. Another thing this video could of used is what sizes we should use for which dinos, for example; 5x5 for medium dinos etc. And may be some time stamps in general. That way we don't have to sit through the whole video if we just wanna see a certain part of it.
3x3 is plenty for almost any dino you want to tame up to and including a rex size, you may need bigger for a spino but I forget. 3 walls high is plenty for almost anything. Really, you want the pen to be on the small size so they can't move around as much. I will sometimes add fences to a large pen to help restrict their movement. You can make some really nice taming pens on rafts and move them to the dino you find, kinda like the one he trapped the stego on land but smaller and with the foundations lowered into the raft.

What does he mean by medium pillar? How do I craft it?
He didn't mention it, but the medium pillar would have to be made using the S+ mod. The default game doesn't have a medium pillar. You can just STACK pillars using the base game instead.
I use doorways instead of windows. You can go through them and easier to shoot

Yeah, I couldn't get the hyenadon pen to work, he aggros each time I get near even when wearing ghille. I found much better success just crouching and following around solo hyenas in the wild

How do you get the tamed animals out of the raft trap?
If they are small, you can pick them up with an Argent, other wise just break the raft and remake it.
Just run it against a rock. You can knock them out with a rock going through the raft.
might be able to put a stone dino gate ontop of one of the stone foundations
And maybe you can build a ramp inwards. Worth a try?

Your argent pen is a waste. All you need is
2 wood fence foundation
2 wood roof
12 wood door frames
Leave one end open
Kite the argent in close the end with the 2 wood door frames you have left and shoot till it goes down.
The argent can damage wood but it won't get out or it shouldn't before u can put it down.
