Arly Velasquez finally gets "stairclimbers" on his TiArrow wheelchair

  • A good look at the cam-locks in action. E Bayindirli figures out a way to climb stairs easily. He invented this method more than 12 years ago using existing wheelchair parts, Hill-Holders in reverse action. Arly finally gets them installed on his new PIMP TiArrow wheelchair.
    FOR ALL ASKING ABOUT EQUIPMENT TO DO THIS, HERE’S A COMPANY MAKING EQUIPMENT THAT WOULD PROBABLY WORK. I HAVEN’T TRIED THESE SO I DON’T KNOW FOR SURE. (I would be glad to try.)

    Again, absolutely amazing. Nnit for everyone but so nice to see young, otherwise able bodied users get around so well. Independence! God bless the designer.

    Now this is what you call being creative! Never thought it was possible to climb stairs in a normal chair! I'll definitely try to find one of these guys because getting stranded because there is no elevator is the absolute worst!!

    That's using the old noggin. If it holds in one direction, turn it around to hold in the opposite. Slick! Never had a need for the hill-climbers before, but now I'm going to get a set. After 25 yrs in a w/c, life just got more interesting.

    As a quadriplegic this may not help me so much but I will deftly pass this on to my friends at the PVA. That's the paralyzed veterans of America. And I know it will be very useful for a lot of guys and girls out there. Thanks for sharing this.

      +Scott Hill Thanks for watching Scott! Also thank you so much for that great attitude and passing it on.. It always suprises me how few people want to do this ( who could easily ) I find once a person TRIES it (even a 90 lb girl in my 39lb chair) they are often surprised how easy it is. A good idea might be for a rehab center to equip a light chair with the hill-holders and a seat belt so people could practice the method in total safety.(spotted by PTs.)

    • @ebaysutube
      @ebaysutube  9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Thanks for watching Gitar Zan. You can still get to your basement and rock out! Even if you lack the arm strength to do this stuff with the "Hang Rail" (see my other vids) There are tons of solutions here on TH-cam that don't require spending an arm and a leg on an elevator or powered stair lift, even this one (www.indystairlifts.com) which can go around corners would not work for me at my house. And of course you need 2 wheelchairs.
      Best of luck! I hope you can return to your music/basement. Where there is a will there is a way. If you(or get someone) can make a vid of the problem, I would be glad to try to help think about a solution.

      I did go down there tonight for a couple hours. I have a lot of work ahead of me down there. Its a mess from sitting for 2 1/2 years. I have a second chair down there I got off CL. I went down on my tookus. That was easy. The hard part was getting back in my chair at the top. I put a grab bar in but its totaly in the wrong spot. Going to be some trial and error stuff till I can wear my leg. I lost the old one to diabetes. I am going to look at some more of your vids. I was a contractor so I know I can build that handrail you put in.

    • @Gitarzan66
      @Gitarzan66 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I made a knotted rope climber I guess you would call it. I put a 4 inch eye hook into the header over the top of my stairs. I had some climbing rope I ran though the hook. I moved my grab bar to a better spot. I am really weak but its a start. This is it until I can wear my leg. I am diabetic and we are slow healers.

I'm a lot heavier than I was the last time I tried to go up some steps but I'm going to give it another go with these! There's some people that will freak out when they open their front door to see me there!! HAHA!

      Adjusted correctly, they won't slip. Unless your wheels are wet or under inflated. I've made the cam parts out of solid Aluminum before thinking the plastic ones could break. See first vid. They seem strong enough for 200lbs+chair. Also you want to put them were there is little to no chance of chewing up your thumbs. th-cam.com/video/xymObDVkHOs/w-d-xo.html

Everyone who actually tries it says about the same thing, “it’s much easier than it looks”. a higher injury like a T-4 may need to strap the chest to the backrest a bit. Please watch some other videos using this method. I think it’s the best manual way to climb stairs, but I could be biased...

    • @ebaysutube
      @ebaysutube  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      They can be called "hill-holders", I've heard "Grade-Aids" these are designed for someone with low arm strength, to push up a ramp without rolling back down between pushes. The ones made by Quickie/Sunrise Medical are the ones I use in the video. They are very strong plastic but have a LOT of stress on them holding a chair and rider at ~45 degrees on the tip of a step on stairs. Obviously, this is an unintended use and needs to be mounted super strong by someone mechanically-inclined, who understand the goal.

      I can't recommend a good source but googling "grade aids for wheelchair" gets the right images mobilitybasics.ca/wheelchairs/brakeaccessories. Quickie brand is what I recommend, I know to be strong enough for my fat ass. (other brands *have* proved too weak for my fat ass.) Then mounting them out of the way of your hands while not in use is a whole nother thing. But If you want to do this, and you're determined you'll get there. this is NOT for everyone.

It’s lightweight enough that my friend could carry it up or down stairs when we needed to. (I can walk very short distances) It was comfortable for me to sit in, I would say if you’re super tall it might be a little cramped. I’m 5’1” and the foot rests were the perfect height. This may not be the best one for long term use, you get what you pay for, but for something that fits our budget that gives me accessibility while we deal with my health this was amazing.

      Hi Pernilla, thanks for watching. We just put them on any way that works but out of the way of fingers...This is Toni, he saw this, then built some. I'm very proud of him.. th-cam.com/video/JE9z7ImNF9gP/w-d-xo.htmlinned by ebaysutube

      "Thank you soooooo much. This was unthinkable to me. Climbing up stairs WAS the last real obstacle to me. In a few days I will be climbing stairs!!! This is life changing. Thank you
      ps: check out my video "wheelchair LongBoarding" cheers"
      On my own wheelchair, they lock out from my back rest, as seen here...th-cam.com/video/xymObDVkHOs/w-d-xo.html
      and on Arly's wheelchair in this video, they are on the lower wheelchair frame bar, again, out of the way! YOU DO NOT WANT TO CATCH YOUR THUMBS IN THOSE. Any good wheelchair mechanic can do this for you as long as he understand. Then, TEST IT FIRST WITH HELP! It's actually easier than it looks, a 45 kilo para lady used my (very heavy chair) up a whole flight of stair, first try, not even out of breath. W.C Ski racer, but still...
      Standing is cool too: th-cam.com/video/0CHTCn890Ow/w-d-xo.html

      ebaysutube thanks for this tip I do understand it now but had to watch it a few times. I'm not sure my wheelchair provider accepts me doing adjustments of my own but I could ask for it. At the moment I can't do that kind of acrobatics that he just showed because my lower back has osteoporosis in it so all the screws and metal in there has no bone to grip, this means that my lower back is in a really sensitive state right now. Any bumps or strapping myself to the chair may cause me to be paralyzed which I m not at the moment and I don't want to get paralyzed if it may be avoided. Hopefully you understood my explanation. Enjoy!

    Great idea however this demonstration is being tried by someone who is very slim and with a low back wheelchair. I wonder how it would work with most paraplegics.

      You do not need to walk to have fun. I'd rather save my prayers for something that could actually make things easier like more ramps, but that's just me

      What 'fun activity' can I NOT have now? This was a kinda 'fun activity'. th-cam.com/video/QOHYB7PtqS4/w-d-xo.html I woulda had more fun but I had dislocated my shoulder 1 month earlier, with 3 torn ligaments and a Bankart fracture on the ball. Still did one race out of 5. God answered my prayers, thank you for yours!
