    Here’s an old handyman’s advice: do the best to take care of yourself. Do cardio, lift weights, take supplements. You make your living with your body. It’s frustrating when you are at the top of your game being able to really sell yourself and price jobs well, attract high-end customers, do difficult jobs nobody else can do and then get sidelined with an injury.

      Strange I was just thinking about that a week ago. I hit 50 this year and I've started a workout routine to stay in shape for the next 10 years "hopefully 10 years and retire".

      Yes, I'm 55 with a full-time job but I work as a handyman to help with child support payments and others but find it hard to finish jobs sometimes because I didn't have the correct tools for some of the jobs I take on.
      For example I took a interlocking stone job and didn't have the correct equipment to cut stones.

    Regarding the gate latch. I ran into that issue two weeks ago, I ran a carriage bolt thru the up tube on gate. Used a spacer to build out the catch. Prevented another trip. Rental property as well.

    For a while there, I thought the running around was going to do me in (new guy here). Traveling to remote stores to find things. Turns out, other handymen are experiencing issues at box stores with empty shelves. For some reason COVID has caused everyone to flock to them. Weekday, weekend, when ever I go they're packed to the gills. Realized how nice it would be to have a tool trailer that has a lot of freq used stuff on hand to prevent the back and forth. I know it's impossible to have everything.

      Very true about shortages. Went to HD to pick up some basic 1x4 8' pine boards - empty. Lowes had just 2, which was fortunately what I needed (they weren't the best quality, but had to make do.) Cashier said it was a combo of everyone doing projects and less shipments. I still can't find bleach anywhere to clean the siding.

    5:20 Ive had luck removing parts like that washer hose by hitting it with WD-40 as you did then gettin some big on locking vice grip pliers on em. Lastly can hit it with a tiny bit of heat. But to be honest, all that takes about as long as changing a new valve does. Just save a trip to the hardware store if thats the only thing you needed! 🤙🏼

  • @jdshear01
    @jdshear01 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Cool to see you taking care of your customers - some jobs are going to be direct money makers and then some are about maintaining your social network which helps you make money indirectly. Chalk it up to marketing or sales...but if it works, do it. If you take care of people then they take care of you, assuming everyone's being honest and straight forward. Having a dependable resource like you that can fix anything would turn some customers into millionaires...and you get a piece of the pie in the process. Some might say "that's table scraps" but if managed correctly you'll be having a seat at the millionaire table some day too. Having good solid future plans, a decent work ethic, and putting in hard work makes it all possible and within reach. I hate hearing business owners complain about customers - just get it done folks, manage your relationships, take care of business...that might mean doing things you don't want or things that don't make sense but if they are happy - it's all good. There's a reason companies pay millions for market research and feedback surveys - I know you're aware...that's why you always aim for 100%. It pays...and it pays dividends (in new leads).

    • @scottcookcookconstructionc6013
      @scottcookcookconstructionc6013 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yup - I recall a guy in a seminar years ago saying "people don't sue people they like". That goes further to getting repeat work and referrals. I always thought it's much better to spend some extra on taking care of customers than paying a lawyer to fight them - started business in 1980 and have had a lawyer collect money only twice (both were customers I knew I shouldn't work for).

    • @AaronCo29
      @AaronCo29 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have a few houses around here that you can’t shut off at the meter. I’m guessing back in the oldendayyyysss, some of these guys would break the cutoff by turning it backwards and the gate would break and the handle would turn. Or the recent replacement of the electronic read meters, the meter sank or filled in with mud and no one can locate it. But I’m guessing here, the Handyman needed to make content for the video to get a few more minutes of air time, which is also why he mentions, giving a price break and the fact that this customer is helped him with allowing him access in making TH-cam videos over the years. I hope you got enough views and likes to get a double size check for this video Handyman! Keep up the content, I gotta say, this one brought back memories.

    A question I’ve had since I started watching you a couple months ago~ do you ever worry about creating too much competition in the market for handymen by promoting the trade as much as you do? Or is your experience that there is plenty of work for everyone & only so many good entrepreneurs out there so there’s no risk of competition?

      Dean Langley, I have laughed s few times when the Handyman blurts out his charge for something after saying, “$50, He’ll no, $250” and them immediately shuts down the video, when I was thinking, it took him half a day and I would charge $375ish, but of course, I haven’t got a TH-cam income and if I did, I’d charge $250 like he did, no reason to be greedy. I’ve started thinking about getting a TH-cam channel going and get back this guy I had that questions everything then blurts out something like, “That’s Stupid” tools get thrown and tempers flare, just to see what kind of views we could get, I’ve even thought about doing that on our days off LMAO I think it would be worth $100K a year.
