    To relieve pressure in a 97 Civic: disconnect the negative battery cable, remove the fuel fill cap, put a rag on the top bolt and finally slowly loosen it one complete turn.

    I unplugged ground of battery and loosened gas cap of my 98 Civic. Wore my Covid face shield, ready to be bathed by gasoline. No issues with banjo bolt. Then got my 19mm and 14mm wrenches to loosen the bottom connection...my 14mm Indian-made crappy wrench broke. I taped a pair of 14mm wrenches together and fortunately got nut loose. No gas bath or single drip at all. Thanks for the video!

    I'm not too impressed with Honda on this because they have no recommended replacement interval for these in my 96 service manual. They say to replace it when the fuel pressure drops lol. So much for prevention. I replaced mine 25k ago and now I am noticing that when the tank is below 1/4 it takes more cranks to start it.

    Salutations Cody the Car Guy,
    First off thank you for the video, everything was in the exact place you showed it to be and I didn't require any other tools than the ones you specified in the video.
    I did run in to an issue though, but it may be due to the bottom fuel line not "seating" properly.
    The car in question: 1997 Honda Civic DX with the 1.6L SOHC.
    The issue: After getting the new fuel filter placed in the groove and getting it secured I placed the bottom fuel line in its respected port and screwed in snugly. I did the exact same thing with the top fuel line and secured it as well. (I did make sure all the washers were in the same place they were when I removed the old fuel filter.) I did turn the ignition a few times to prime the system and then started the car. I immediately noticed a sputter occurring and went back to the front to check it out. I noticed the bottom fuel line leaking pretty severely at the connection point.
    I know that isn't much to go on but any ideas?
    Should I just unscrew everything and reconnect it to verify the connection?

    92-94 civics ave both the inlet and outlet on the top of the filter, they changed over to the design of filter shown in your video in 1995, you should change the title to reflect that correctly.

  • @Trekopolis

    That back bolt that secures the bracket is a PAIN in the arse to get to and remove. You need the correct socket tools and adapter for that access. I didn't have anything but a small wrench and deep socket, but nothing that was on a swivel and it was nearly impossible to get to. Live and learn....get the right tools before attempting. I finally got it off, but then immediately went out and bought better tools for the job. :)

      +Strictly4Promo to add to this vid with my own experience: when changing this for my
      civic 2000 DX, i found the fuse under the steering column was labeled
      #13, and was a 15amp blue color fuse.
      followed instructions exactly from this vid and have no problems. just some minor fuel spill so be prepared for that even after relieving the fuel pressure from the fuel pump relay fuse.

    Just bought a 97 civic, fuel filter looks stock, I was on the fence about replacing the fuel filter as I don't usually like to fix stuff that doesn't seem broke. I wonder if the ebay fuel filters are ok, Ill certainly swap it out for 10 bucks shipped

    • @urmomsahoe1
      @urmomsahoe1 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I know this is a little late but with cars you normally don't want to wait for something to break before you fix it. Preventative maintenance. If you car has 150k miles or more and it looks like you have a stock fuel filter you want to change it out now. It might not leak and it might work but its most likely gummed up with crap.

      Hi, I get these filters really cheap and it takes me 30mins to swap them, it makes sense to do it when you service, as its right there in the engine bay. Over service is better than under service, but thats just me.

    So it is fine to change this without draining the fuel line of pressure? I see comments of people skipping this step, and just opening the gas cap, and covering with a cloth when opening the nut...
    Which is it people?

    • @CodytheCarGuy
      @CodytheCarGuy  7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +Michael W Lam well if the pumps not working them most of the time the pressure is hardly there. Second you can remove the fuel pump fuse fire the car up and that takes the pressure away. Or do like you said put a rag over it and loosen the bolt slowly and youll be good to go.

    I did this 2 days ago, and since then fuel is running down the line at the bottom of the filter, I’ve tightened it, had my husband tighten it again, and it’s still doing it. Is there any reason you know of that this would happen.

    • @CodyMacGyver
      @CodyMacGyver 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can be missing a washer or the flare could be cracked. Hard to say with no pics. Some have a nut that tightens down with a flare and one can have a washer.

      Make sure that your hand is near the very end of the wrench and give it all your strength. Careful with what you can hit, and if that doesn't work, you can use a rubber mallet and hit the end of the wrench. Whatever you do, you'll probably have a nice bit of gas leak.
      Oh and make sure you relieve the pressure as well.
