It also helps to begin the lower body weight shift to left side, slightly prior to fully completing the backswing….Nice video and explanation.

Hi Coach Carolin, I do think your coaching is amazing so thank you. On this short video you make the excellent point that don’t rely on the hands position at address to get you into the correct dynamic delivery position. You get there by a correct downswing (not holding onto the wrong angles) tied in with a dynamic pivot motion of the body in the second part of the downswing as you rotate into impact.
Many of your viewers have got caught up with your initial broadcast statement about golfers can’t simply create this dynamic position at address in the set up. That’s right they can’t but it does not prevent them from having a slight hands forward position at address with short or mid irons like the 7 iron. Hope you get my point?
Many amateurs like me get the wrong idea and think they need to pull the club across their body into impact to achieve this pro like hands forward position. Whereas the pros are merely getting into the slot having unhinged their lead wrist almost like hitting / smashing down on an impact bag off to their right side of their body but timing that with the body pivot / rotation with takes their hands from this unhinged position off to the right side of their body through body rotation into a hands forward shaft leaning impact condition. Your video concentrated mainly on the lateral shift aspect of this movement. But the role of the hip opening the chest opening / body rotation as you move into impact carries the hands into the pro like hands forward / shaft leaning impact condition. Many of us amateurs fail to ever get there because we start off on the wrong foot by swaying off / away from the ball in the takeaway. We then further exacerbate the problem by misunderstanding how to hold onto lag. So we fail to unhinge our lead wrist earlier enough in the downswing. So we end up tipping the club over the swing plane on the way down by hitting from the top with our shoulders / upper body, in essence reversing the correct sequence of lowering the arms first then adding in rotation.
    Myles

It did help a lot with stopping the sway back on take away, and it works for good contact. But it reduced my distance and the ball often goes left. I think I must just move forward more before the strike (getting older now in 60s).

Coach Carolin: I don’t disagree that starting your swing with FSL doesn’t translate to FSL at contact, but I find it to be a swing key that just plain works for ball contact before ground contact. It seems to trick my mind into believing that the ball is farther forward than it actually is, so my forward press is more forward - to a good result. Tony Finau has an exaggerated forward lean at address. You would have to ask him what it does for him - tricks his mind? Swing keys are part of the swing. Nicklaus said he only focused on 2 things: his right thigh on the backswing, and his left thigh coming back. Why that worked - who knows. So I’m not saying that one should have a forward lean, just that it may serve to trick your brain like it does for me.

    • @coachcarolin

This can also work the other way unfortunately and lead to them "falling backwards" in the downswing as a compensation and struggling with consistent contact. I am a fan of a natural weight shift motion as it is also easier on your back!

It's a fair point but, it very much depends on the players movement pattern as to how they get into a compressed impact position, for example, Trevino and DJ setup with their hands forward because of their strong left hand grip and then rotate hard, players whose grip is 'weaker' Spieth, olazabal, hogan, tend to have more lateral movement, weight moving towards the target, to produce the impact conditions they need. Lots of ways to make it work 😊

The main reason is that, as well as having excellent technique and timing, they are physically stronger.
I think most people would be astonished by just how strong are the top pros.
It is similar, in some respects, to Formula 1 drivers. The G forces they withstand while controlling their cars to a fine degree are far greater than even the most extreme roller-coasters.
The average driver simply couldn't function under such strain.
