Such as if you accidentally changed to set; they don’t trust kids not to fool around in the settings
The worst part about removing the basic attack from the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon series is that that basic attack still exists in the game, it's just you can't do it but all the enemy Pokemon can

Slightly worse, imo, is that they didn't actually remove it, they just changed it to always do a static 5hp of damage, so it's basically useless. Why even bother? (Not sure if the remakes still have it or not, I didn't play those.)
@spectralumbra1568 Maybe the idea is that it's suppose to just be a turn waste? Like for positioning purposes? But there are other ways to do that. Honestly they need to revert it back to how it was in PMD 1 and 2
That's crazy. I'd use the basic attack a lot when I played Explorers of Sky. Sometimes you want to save some PP.

You forgot making it so the rival chooses the Pokémon weak to your starter now. Removing basic strategy.
On the bright side, if you pick Meowscarada, the Quauquaval has a secondary type advantage at least (Fighting is strong against Dark). Would’ve been cool if they’d made the secondary types for all matchups work like that.
I mean I kinda get it. Your starter learns its first elemental move, you use it against rival’s starter, you feel good about big damage. Compare it to say Johto where Chikorita is just tackling things most of the time, not the same sort of satisfaction you know?
Tbf I kind of see it as we’re the rivals to the “rival” characters, which makes sense in the case with Hop and Hau since they want to prove they’re going to be the best, but the idea doesn’t work with with Nemona or Shauna who are supposed to be better than us, they feel Ike they’re taking it easy on the player despite them being our rival :/
But by the end, I still agree the idea of current rivals choosing the weaker starter apart from ours is still disappointing
Shauna I get but I think the whole gimmick with Nemona is that she’s actually intentionally going easy on us or otherwise limiting herself because she’s canonically so strong that if she brought her usual team, she’d stomp the player into the dirt, so she goes with a new team and makes sure to pick the starter weak to yours so you give her a more challenging fight. She’s a battle loving adrenaline junkie after all, and the whole game she’s basically playing a challenge run to try to get you to be the one person who can make her sweat in a Pokémon battle.

They had a golden opportunity to help Bug types by making them super-effective against Fairys like how Poison and Steel were helped offensively...and they blew it

Plus, considering that Dragon and Fairy Type are primarily based on folklore, I doubt that anyone would have complained about a Bug weakness.
Depnding on the specific fantasy world in question, fairies could be so tiny, pacifist ect. that they fill the niche of several bugs' prey within an ecosystem.

Agree!! Everyone compares them to Ash and most haven't even watched Pokemon Horizons yet, when so far the anime is super great. Wish Liko and Roy were given a more fair chance :/

1. Reducing the number of double battles. Colosseum and XD are the poster children but emerald had a fair few too
2. Transferring Pokémon between generations. It was annoying but at least it was free.

Legends Arceus really made a bunch of good steps forward. To me, its the biggest upgrade ever.
If abilties were in legends arceus/regigigas did not have slow start even without abilities being in the game it would be the best pokemon game

I feel like it was a mistake to call PLA mainline, because fans reasonably expect that gameplay and a lot of its elements to appear in future mainline games.
But I'm glad a lot of them didn't reappear fully in SV.
PLA is more of a 3rd-person shooter than a turn-based RPG. It's far less about battling and gaining experience through training. It's just an option in PLA to battle for experience, and frankly, it's a far harder option. The game encourages you to play it like an action game most of the time.
But SV is an open-world turn-based RPG. It's not an action game even after incorporating light action elements.
They added the ability to sneak behind a Pokémon to make it a little easier to catch from PLA, and I think that's appropriate.
What I did want to see though was the frostbite and drowsy mechanics return. Those made more sense in a more active game like PLA, but it would have still worked in SV. And Freeze was never a good status since it's very hard to inflict and remove. And Sleep is so broken that there are multiple rules in multiple formats restricting its use. I do hope that returns.
I'll give you 1 major downgrade you somehow skipped. Going from gen 3's battle system speed to gen 4's. It was on newer and more powerful hardware and yet the battles were still in 2D and runs slower than previously.
Worth dealing with all of it for the physical/special split.

Yeah. Besides, the only jerk rivals are only 3. Blue, Silver and Bede and everyone keep taking the Kalos gang into this discussion, which is really annoying. It's been 10 years since X and Y. And they weren't even the first friendly rivals. That was Brendan/May
There's always Hugh from Black & White 2, and hell, even Wally (in ORAS, at least) was a well-developed rival despite not being an asshole (and kinda getting shafted from most of the story).
I gotta say, one thing that keeps gen 3 from being perfect for me is the rival. Flat out doesn't even compare to the first 2 or the one after thank god

Emboar has grown on me a lot ever since I used it in BW2 recently. It learns Scald, which is neat, but having to grind PWT for a Brick Break TM was admittedly a bit of a pain.
Brother don’t waste time on the PWT. You get more BP from the battle subway and it’s much much easier to get the TMs there. Plus the BP counts if you take it to PWT.
Honestly, the PLG graphics is the best the games ever looked, in my opinion. I skipped the games when they were initially released, but got them gifted some years later, and was really surprised by their graphics. If it weren't for the missing PvE fights and the GO style catching, they would be almost perfect remakes of Gen 1.
I still think battle revolution is the best we got visually, but for main series lets go is definitely the highest quality visuals we got.
In my opinion, PLG isn't the best Pokemon ever looked but it's certainly the best looking pokemon game on Switch.

Plus the terra type Stone change almost nothing, that thing had a fairy moves who got wasted.
The fight would definitely be better if she started with it(with terra or not) and made the Kingambit her final one, which get stronger the more pokemon are defeated.
I think you're being a bit unfair towards Liko and Roy. They need more time to be fleshed out as characters.
Edit: Also I don't think Starter Pokemon being humanoid is an objective downgrade. I can't speak for everyone, but I actually don't mind the majority of them.

Still salty that ash greninja was retconned. I remember being so excited using battle bond greninja in the sun and moon games, transferred it to scarlet and violet, and was immediately disappointed. I get that gamefreak wanted to distance itself from both ash and mega evolution, but they really violated my entire experience with battle bond.

I always thought they could do more with the "Cut grass" mechanic that they ditched after Gen III.
Why not have Pokemon or items that can only appear after cutting the grass away?
I feel like catching pokemon in Legends Arceus seriously lowered the attachment I had to my pokemon.
I felt nothing with a capture. It was like, oh my 36th Bidoof. hurray guess.
I feel like the only way it could work in a normal pokemon title, is having you battle the pokemon if you fail to catch it.
It's the PoGo effect. I throw out hundreds of pokemon a week that I give zero shats about any of them.
Contrarily, IDC about any pokemon I catch in main series apart from the main 6 I use in a normal playthrough, any other one is just pokedex fodder. It's also a lot slower having to engage in battles and catch them the traditional way.
But legends ALSO made both catching styles optional. Nothing stopped you from battling to catch a mon apart from it being the slower method. Scar/vio doesn't give you the choice, you either do it the slow traditional way, or you don't catch pokemon.
@@darcidious99 Unlike Legends Arceus, you're not supposed to catch heaps and mountains of pokemon in Scarlet and Violet, just the ones you're intrested in, or if you want to complete the dex, 1 of each.
I get that the mechanic makes sense gameplay wise in that game, you don't want to need to battle every mon and watch a cutscene to catch it, if catching a lot of pokemon is the goal.
But as I said, that's not the point of S&V, slowness may be annoying, but it's 10x better than feeling nothing for me.
@@shinysilverstardust which is why again, there's no point in it not being optional, which legends did do. I never cared about it making sense in the context of the game's story/atmosphere, what I cared about is that it was fun to just chuck balls and items around and stealth up on pokemon. I feel nothing catching pokemon the traditional way apart from "cool, one more in the pokedex", I'm not saying that the legends way is the best thing since sliced bread, but it's quick and has a tactile feel to aiming/throwing that battling doesn't do for me.
Especially in the context of the game being a massive open world, why do i have to be restricted into a turn based battle to catch/interact with a pokemon? Why can't I bait an area with berries to draw in pokemon, or set like a trap or something to lock fast ones like varoom into place? You're still tasked with completing the pokedex, even if you only catch 1 of each species that's still 400 catches minimum, why not make it something that's fun to do? I don't think the traditional way should ever be deserted, but they definitely need to give us something else to do cause I hate it. At the very least baiting an area or something to that effect immerses me into seeing them as wild creatures, even if i have to do a turn based battle to catch the thing. Here you just walk into them... I hate it😂. At least you can throw your pokemon out manually though im glad that made it over at least, it sorta barely transfers that feeling from legends.

Triple Battles and Rotation Battles were the best in my opinion as they were fun to play
I have fond memories of playing X as a kid. EV training my playthrough team the moment I caught them so they could destroy the battle maison.

4:27 Liko and Roy are actually super entertaining and well-written protagonists so far in Pokemon Horizons! I like them a lot (especially Liko!) and I feel like most people aren't giving them a fair chance just because of Ash nostalgia :(((
I haven't watched the anime since I was never a huge fan of it, but TBH I'm glad we got new protagonists, hell thats entirely one of the major points people give to the digimon anime, it got new characters and new stories.
I'm way too old for the anime now, however I'm pretty glad Ash was discontinued. I got sick of him getting bonked with the stupidity hammer every new generation.

I can't speak on them because I stopped watching the anime a long time ago. One reason is that it's very clearly a children's anime. But I stopped watching it when I was young enough to still be in the target audience because I always found Ash annoying, so calling a change from Ash to ANYONE a downgrade rubbed me the wrong way here.

Iv'e pretty much had it with people's beef about "Bipedal mons are bad" thing, last time we had quadrapeds (Meganium and Samourott) people still didn't like them..
I also hate the term "furries/people in Fursuits" Everytime we do get a Bipedal mon..
I like meganium, though I did find samurott disappointing. I think I mostly just wanted it to stay looking like an otter though.
I very much agree that the complaints about humanoid mons is super subjective and kind of silly.
@@mastermarkus5307 I think what annoys alot of people (me included) is that Samurott could've either leaned more into being an otter OR go hard on the "Swordmaster"-thing, but Gamefreak decided to do a weird hybrid of the two that REALLY didn't turn out right. It looks SO weird wielding a sword, when it has the body-type of a table.

Anthro Pokemon have a genuine presence in the world of Pokemon, but when you get something like an anthro green cat masquerade or a lizard with gloves, you need to step back a bit and remember these are Pokemon.
Amidst my criticism, anthro green cat is a sick design, but it would fit better in a game like Digimon.

They get worse and worse as time passes by… I can sense the darkness inside their heart… At this point on… their heart will fall into darkness… and become corrupted for good…
Kingdom Hearts speech aside, I'm definitely inclined to agree. I remember back when the biggest issue in the fanbase were genwunners, which aside from their very harsh opinions, were just opinionated people but not necessarily toxic. Nowadays it seems everyone is as opinionated as them, and the truly rabid fans are unbelievable.

Eh, mixed feelings on that. Sometimes the fans are toxic, but the games have had some serious, objective problems recently (Scarlet and Violet visuals and performance) and Pokémon as a whole has kind of languished in not making interesting changes to the main gameplay loop, at least not battling.

I feel like removing the Battle Frontier is the biggest downgrade for me.
The fact that they teased it in ORAS but never gave it to us is just adding salt to the wound.....
So crazy that the last time it was in a game was HGSS. OVER HALF of the series so far doesn't have the Battle Frontier! It's been FIVE generations since it was there!
Making that Battle Frontier tease even worse is the fact that Hoenn's Battle Frontier was confirmed to be destroyed in Emerald's timeline during SM's postgame story. Because THAT'S not a HUGE MIDDLE FINGER to the people who thought it'd return!

Maybe its because i spent so many years trying to get certain shinies but finally getting them now actually makes me really happy bc I can finally have them... it still feels like a payoff to me
Same, shinies were only for people who was willing to waste hours upon hours in a game, people who dont want to waste their life getting legit cool colored pokemon i think will be more memorable, but even so, they should not be THIS common. I got 5 in my first playthrough of violet and that was when I was not even trying

But they went to far.😂 Make me feel an idiot looking back at having spent so many days and hours soft resetting for my shiny legends in gen 7, and all the time spent with dexnav, s.o.s battles and masuda method breeding... Felt so proud of my 30+ shinies but now Shinies are not that valuable anymore...😐
Well, i Will say, in my First game of Scarlet, i didnt got even a Shiny, not even How much i Hunted, until end game, that a cutie Lion club walked to me, all white, and i used to defeito everyone in the final part of the game with a Shiny Female Pyroar, but nowdays, i have now 4 Boxes of Shiny pokemon, but only because i Hunt for they
Strongly disagree that XY didnt have much in the way of post game, the looker cases were so incredibly fun, a better comparison would have been Scarlet and Violet which after completing Area 0 (which isnt post game, it's the final major story plot) theres NOTHING to do
you can do the academy ace tournament, take classes. catch the four ruin legendaries by finding the stakes, farm herba mystica by doing tera raids. i wouldn’t say there’s nothing to do
Downgrades are the biggest reoccurring flaw of the series. It’s a shame they don’t take a longer break between games
they realized we no longer can "catch em' all" anymore so they changed it to "train on" lol

That is not true, they removed the phrase from box arts, but the phrase "Gotta catch em all" was used all the way up to and including gen 6 with the advertisements for each new games such as posters, and the announcement commercials such as in Diamond and Pearl, and X and Y.@@imprincesswolfy2565

One of the biggest reasons why I still consider Pokemon X&Y my underrated gem is because, at the time, the 3D graphics were so different and amazing!

Another downgrade is that well I can't pick so let me list them down below
*clears throat as i get my papers in order*
1- removing the option to put stickers on our pokeballs (my adhd creative brain loved it)
2- contests or whatever gen 5 (aka unova) had cause I loved doing them more than the gyms
3- customization getting worse (gen 6/7/8 were good but gen 9 screwed it up)
4- good online features and stuff that didn't require a online subscription (I hate Nintendo online for their expensive prices)
though for #4 there is more to it than just online though I agree it can be high for some to afford
Gen 9 have more limiting outfits due to you being a student. And besides hairstyles are no longer locked between genders which already makes it (imo) superior to prior gens

The worst part about removing the PLA catching method is that this method never inherently took away the original system. You can choose to battle a Pokemon, weaken it, and then throw a Pokeball in the actual fight. That, or you could choose to skip the fight and actually interact with them in the overworld.
I think it's saying something that Pokemon is in such a dire state that the people who aren't blindly worshipping the franchise are only looking forward to a finished product now. That's an inexcusable low that no other Nintendo IP committed.
7:29 I NEVER want ILCA to touch Unova. I haven’t played either original Unova Game yet (Even though I have a 2DS to play them on) so I don’t want my first Unova Experience to be like my first Sinnoh Experience (Which was BDSP… AKA PAIN)
Number 42, Kanto was a downgrade even in GSC, let alone HGSS. The trainers were weak, the Wild Pokémon even weaker and no big story event besides challenging Gym Leaders to battle Red. The Rocket Sidequest in Cerulean doesn’t count.
Post Game Content has never been THAT good. Don’t kid yourself.
Looking back, even the postgame of FireRed and LeafGreen was better, cause while shorter, feels like a lot more happened.

I don't understand how people complain about shiny hunting being refined into a "easier process". Sure the hunt itself maybe shorter, but it's not as if you don't have to put effort into getting the hunt set up. It's extremely time consuming to complete the pokedex to get the shiny charm and quite tedious to farm tera raids for herba. It's not like you're just given these things at the start of the game, you have to go and earn them. Furthermore, no one is making you earn these items, so if you want the hunt itself to feel longer, just don't use them...
Remember when our biggest complaint was whether or not Fennekin would evolve into another Fire/Fighting type?

The problem with BDSP is that it stuck too close to the originals. There were plenty of bugs in the originals they could have fixed in the originals, but didn't for the sake of "consistency".

Base odd are 1/4096, using a level three sandwich can get it to 1/1024.38 but using a lv.3 sandwich, the shiny charm, and using outbreak method hunting you can shave it down to 1/512.44 odds. Not to mention outbreak hunting kinda guarantees the shiny Pokémon as long as you don't mess it up, shinies are pretty easy to get.
If you download like the two pictures of the lv 3 shiny sandwich recipes for every type you can get most stuff easily.
one for increasing spawn rates for a type so you don’t always have to wait for the outbreaks, and one for increasing size in the overworld -useful to my blind 31yo ass squinting at the microscopic dreepies you can easily pick up a few even as a very casual hunter. I have maybe five or six shinies I hunted and a couple I don’t care about just from getting same type mons walk into my specific hunt location or whatever. the adhd is severe so I’ve never bothered for more than an hour or so.
Most annoying part is the sandwich eating animation and the “let’s go” knock out chains needed to maximise rates without a shiny charm
Oh also I didn’t know until embarrassingly late 1) that the herba mystica were in the condiments page of my sandwich ingredients when I was in creative mode and 2) you don’t gotta place that top bun if you don’t want to, throw it into the void if it’s about to knock the important ingredients off

A Massive Downgrade not mentioned in the video is Evolutions getting way to tedious and obscure. Galarian Farfetch to Sirfetch is so annoying and also needing Pokémon to walk a certain amount of steps and the step count can reset.

I really wish triple and rotation battle makes their comeback. People who are not in the competitive world would appreciate it. Only having TWO battle options are very limited. Since 2002 that we are having the same battle systems in the games. At least Gen 5 and 6 were the exception, but in Gen 7 we lost them. So, since 2014 we are missing a new battle way in the games.
Same I really loved the addition of triple & rotation battles and I still don’t think they were utilized enough. I’d love a game where during the course of the game you battled both a gym a antagonist and rival using triple/rotation.. hey we had a double battle in gen 3 with Tate & Liza in RSE..

The Pokémon fans and community going from casual fans, who simply love and enjoy everything about Pokémon to becoming one of most toxic fandoms, with most fans being self-entitled and/or opinionated on some things about Pokémon and they believe they're in the right and don't care what others say or they're wrong.
I get it Scarlet/Violet is the worst pokémon game for its bugs, performance issues, and such. I acknowledged those sure but there are some fans, including me, who enjoyed the game for its storyline, characters, and gameplay, despite the bugs. At least they focus on the positive side unlike some, or most.
So basically every fandom ever? I don’t know a single fandom that doesn’t have those attributes.
Not saying you're wrong that the community is awful, but "simply loving and enjoying pokemon" isn't an excuse for the complete mess that is scarlet/violet. There are great aspects to it, but pretending that any of the issues it has are acceptable is being an idiot in the complete opposite direction. When a series gets stale, its time to reinvent the wheel, and at this point the wheel gamefreak has reinvented can barely even rotate.
It's the worst nintendo published game I've ever seen in regards to its functionality, and at $60 its completely inexcusable. They've attempted to fix the performance at least multiple times now, and have only made it worse. They did however successfully stop you from duping pokemon/items and save your time though! And then without EVER even acknowledging the issues in the pokemon presents, they had the nerve to charge an additional $35 for dlc which at this point includes about 3 hours of mid content, that makes the performance even worse. I'm not gonna sit back and enjoy that just cause "its pokemon", I'm gonna call it out for being the unacceptable game that it is because we deserve better, and the GF employees that have to make these games in ridiculous development times deserve better too.
Honestly why buy pokemon games anymore when your just getting a worse product aside from graphics. Thats what i feel like with pokemon im buying a product thats worse then a 10 year old one i already own.

You cannot fish any more theres no really any side content like pokemon contests any more or the game corner. there's not much end game content any more. There are no cave mazes or victory road so the world feels boring to navigate as there is no longer any challenge and finding your way around to get anywhere. With the new games i feel why buy something thats worse then a 15 year old game i already own aside from visuals.
@@cosmicsvids lets be fair to scar/vio's good qualities too, it has the most QOL features ever, there's practically no barrier to entry for learning competitive with how easy it is making competitive mons, and it has one of if not THE best stories to date. Also the 3 objectives make it structurally the most diverse, as someone who's sick of gyms I appreciate what sun/moon and this game did by giving me alternate challenges. In many ways, this is THE best pokemon game to date, which is something I could never really say about sword/shield despite its new features.
I do agree though, this "lack of content that's later sold to you as dlc" gimmick though is pissing me off. Scar/vio and sw/sh had pitiful nothings of postgames. Scar/vio had a good meaty story so its not that bad there, sw/sh were just pitiful through and through. The lack of interesting areas/caves/puzzles to explore is really dumb, towns are a joke with every building gating you off and not even letting you in them, and above all else the performance is just inexcusable. It's so weird how the game is simultaneously amazing and putrid in its design, I have 0 idea how they did that but my god they sure did.
At this point I think gamefreak should just return to designing some more 2d traditional style games, and allow other studios NOT NAMED ILCA to make 3d experimental ones for a while. Time constraints are the big thing holding them back, but there are so many issues that have plagued pokemon since at least sun/moon on a technical level that its clear GF has no idea how to do it. Legends arceus is the most fun one they've made but even then that game has problems too. Or at the very least gamefreak needs to be completely shaken up and filled with people that understand how to make a game on par with modern standards, but I doubt that would happen.

I agree. It's a very "genwunner" sort of opinion where someone doesn't look back on what was actually in gen 1. Like, so many people hate on Klefki for being "just keys" but Voltorb and Electrode are absolutely more boring (I think Klefki is really cute and has a good inspiration).
I understand some people kind of wanting the sprigatito evolutions to be quadrupedal because it seems like a lot of STARTER final evos specifically are bipedal, but I very much agree that meowscarada ended up being a cooler idea than just "plant cat".

Paladin, Ninja, Mage, Archer, Singer, Wrestler, Drummer, Spy, Soccer player, Magician, Dancer, they keep designing starters with a profession instead of just...making a creature.
@@AnzuInfinity it doesn't matter if starter or not when it has a cool design. they try to give a similar design origin for the starter with dnd classes, good vs evil+damsel in distress(even thou dicedueye keeps most of his owl look) , things that are popular in England and final artists (same for the Gen 1-5 ones just don't have all in mind), they mostly try to keep all choices in that theme and human like starters were a thing since Gen 3 with Blaiziken.
Plus for the drummer part, it's hard to make a monkey less human looking

Honestly, megas should stay gone and be replaced with permanent evolutions for the ones that need them.
Also, making shinies easier is great. I never cared to bother with it until now where it is much easier and actually fun to do. All they did was make it more accessible for more casual players. They were ridiculously rare before and it’s literally just an aesthetic change. Besides, it mostly seems easier because of spawns being in the overworld so it takes less time to see more Pokémon. That’s why there are marks, to make rare collectors have something else to go for that is still incredibly rare.

I don’t think there is anything wrong with how Megas were implemented as a general mechanic. The only issue is when they overtune some Megas (Kangaskhan and Lucario) and give Megas to some mons that really didn’t need them (Garchomp and freaking Mewtwo).
Megas not being a permanent evolution meant that _any_ Pokemon could receive a massive buff that is exclusive to them. I don’t see them giving Beedrill or Pidgeot an evolution anytime soon.
And Game Freak overtuning mons has always been a thing not just exclusive to Megas. Look at a bunch of Paradox mons, the Ultra Beasts, and even some recent common mons like Basculegion and Kingambit, for example.
Im happy that i only played gen 1-5 and just replayed them instead of buying the new ones since I have never heard anyone say they prefer gen 6-10 over the older games and most reviews on them are mostly about whats wrong and what they removed instead of whats good.

We have a broken normal move already in boomburst it just has small distribution and even with tera normal it’s not broken. Besides, with modern power creep we can definitely handle it.
The biggest downgrade is the artstyle going from amazing in SWSH and LA to whatever the bad word SV gave us (the kids in that game just look like creepy dolls I actually hate looking at it)

I really don't agree on the Starters becoming more humanoid being bad. I personally actually prefer it that way, as it gives them more personality. Also, I'd say Infernape is pretty humanoid lol.
Apes are humanoid by default, though. Out of all animals, they resemble humans the most and share the most DNA with us
I have to disagree that it gives them more personality. Swampert and Serperior have a ton of personality, and they aren’t humanoid at all. And Chesnaught is kind of a mess personality-wise, at least imo, and it is fully bipedal with humanoid arms.
Being humanoid could make it _easier_ to give them personality from a designer’s perspective, but it doesn’t give them a leg up in showing personality.
