I listened to this as an audio play first and I somehow knew that Elsa Lanchester would be perfect for one of the loopy sisters. She was so adept at playing slightly unstable chaotic women like in Bell, book and candle. Ida lupino looks way too young for the role but she was such a good actress.
Made before the time of hi tech video where they can play back each scene instantly, instead having to develop the old 35mm? film, then spend months editing it all in the cutting room and still they did a fantastic job. The lighting, the camera angles, the atmosphere, the acting, the direction, all go to make this a great immersive watch. I enjoyed every minute, thank you for uploading.
1st time seeing this old b&w vintage movie. No credits, so although cast of characters familiar, other than Lancaster & Lupino, hard to put a name to the others. The sisters gave off an air of similarity to the craziness of the"Arsenic & Old Lace" ladies. Great film. ☆☆☆☆
Ida lupino was a beautiful woman but an even better actress. She was great in this part. I watched the movie because of Elsa but was and stayed because of Ida. ❤it
As I saw it she did everything out of love for her sisters to keep a roof over their heads. Even as she left she knew that they would be housed and safe at the convent and that was all that mattered to her
Thank you. This was an excellent film with the best of acting. I am surprised to see this avant garde script in a film of this decade. A very unusual film and not one moment if boredom. PS Albert was a nasty piece of work.
Now that ( spiral staircase ) was a good movie...kept you guessing and you had a likeable heroin...not trying to pick the best out of a pack of despicable people..thanks for your comment 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍🤠

@@msheart2So how long will you house and feed some strangers in your home? These women were thrust on Mrs Fisk and she had been used to living a nice, quiet life alone. But you think that what belonged to Mrs Fisk’s should have also been theirs too? When you take a couple of weird strangers into your house, then come back and tell us on here. There was a persistent belief that insanity was genetic...whether it was alcoholism, theft, incest, and on. Movies often exploited it, as in this movie. All three sisters were "insane".
As I watch this movie it brings me to australian super intelligent, extremely talented comedians " Kranski Sisters" Three ladies were in my opinion copies of these ladies from the movie ❤
@@Talk2WandaVision It's still very strange in that dept. The end seems to glorify Ellen's decision but she's just facing the inevitable music. Very rare for a movie of that period to be so morally fogged.
Good actors. Too bad movie is missing the title/credit sequence. I’ve never seen one like it, from that period. The trailer for the movie advertised that it was based on the “Great Stage Success that Made London Forget Enemy Air Raids…”
I've worshipped her since I was a child because of roles just like this. This kind of film has always been a favorite of mine and Ms. Lancaster might be the biggest reason. A lot of us learned about being a good grown up from watching these films in childhood.
The calibre of performance from these women is superb. Thanks for the upload
The likes of which cannot be found in Hollywood today.
For those looking at reviews to see if it’s worth watching….yes!,, Really good movie.
I enjoyed this movie. It held my attention completely. When a movie is this good, special effects are not necessary.
I was doubtful I'd enjoy the movie at first, but kept watching and really enjoyed the performances of all the actors. I rate this movie a 9.
Great film. Thanks for the upload. Ida Lupino was great in this, as in fact was the whole cast!
Yes! Thanks for putting a name to a familiar face! Now that you did, it's obvious that's who she was...but the setting threw me.
Let's not overlook Ida Lupino. Great actress and one of the first woman directors.

Good movie. I love so much old enghish movies.
SO grateful no one has done us the unholy "favor" of colorizing this gem. May it stay forever greyscale....
I like the warbly colors! Adds an element of mystery!🤣
I love the old B&W but colorized is easier to see. And you don't have to watch it.
I love these old movie sets... so grateful. ☺ It is a British film I had never heard of.
Pretty sure it is an American film by Columbia.
I have a couple cousins like this. They create utter chaos wherever they go. It's extremely stressful.

Yes, so have I. Unfortunately, I know exactly what you mean.

They were all good specially Ida Lupino the way she was like really in control in a crazy way
Ida Lupino se convirtio en una buena directora de cine , ademas que ers una marabillosa actriz ❤❤

I'll snuggle up with a blanket and hot choc and watch it on Halloween -

That was excellent! I’ve not been so enthralled by an old movie like this in quite some time. Thanks! But what year was this released??
Try googling? It was 1941.
Elsa Lanchester. probably one of the most famous and iconic horror movie actresses. Bride of Fankenstein.people still purchase the merchandise today

I was expecting Ellen would ask or at least hint at that to the nuns.
This was interesting and entertaining to watch, probably the best 40s noir film I seen
This must be Lupino's crowning performance. And she had a few.
