GM 9.25 IFS Gear Swap DIY - Reckless Wrench Garage

  • **The GM IFS 9.25" axle is built by American Axle & Manufacturing (AAM). There is also a solid axle (front and rear) version of the 9.25". This video is specifically for the IFS axle.
    There are various specs listed all over the web for the 9.25" IFS. The choice is yours to choose whichever you'd like to use.**
    The GM IFS (Independent Front Suspension) axle is a strange chunk of mechanical wonder. It's an aluminum case, split nearly down the center-lengthwise, that contains the innards of a typical live axle. When taken apart, the carrier just kinda plops out and the pinion stays inside. It just seems weird to call it an axle...it's more like a confused easter egg.
    At any rate, if you're rebuilding or re-gearing a GM 9.25" IFS axle this video may be of use to you. The process is very much the same for the GM 8.25 IFS; however, the specs may differ.
    This video format assumes the viewer already has some general knowledge of what it takes to install a set of gears in an axle.
    Specs:
    *Ring Gear Torque - 75 ft lbs
    *Clam Shell Bolts - 35 ft lbs
    *Pinion Bearing Preload -
    15 - 22 in lbs with new bearings
    7 - 9 in lbs with used bearings
    *Backlash - .006" - .010" (.012"-.020" on the gauge)
    Let us know if this video actually helped, or if it was the worst possible how-to video you have EVER watched.

    THANK YOU for posting this!!! I had no idea how to take that driver’s side CV flange off. You saved me from (stupidly) tearing the diff down to get to it!!

    Is it possible to remove and re install the driver side bearing adjuster on the vehicle to replace the O-Ring? I was hoping I could just mark it and install it back in the same location.

    Bearing races..... I changed bearings in my S10 once (2005). I greased the bearings perfectly. After hours of driving (3?) the bearings seized and blew. I just now (2021) realized it was because I didnt change out the races. I’ve considered the various facts of this story many times, but never have I considered the fact that failing to replace the races was a factor.

    • @RecklessWrenchGarage
      @RecklessWrenchGarage  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yea, bearings and races tend to wear together. It’s best to change them at the same time.
      Also, you wouldn’t grease the bearings in a differential as they get lubed with oil.

      @@RecklessWrenchGarage yeah, I meant the bearings in the front hubs. Either way, watching the video made me realize what I did wrong.

    Awesome video!! Do you happen to know if they have any LSD or posi gears for those front diffs? Either the 9.25 or 8.25. I have an 08 Escalade and have been wanting to upgrade with bigger CV axles and LSD but have a hard time finding anything thanks for any info?!

      I am not aware of any lsd parts directly from Yukon; however, there is an Eaton e-locker and an ARB air locker available for them.

    How much would you charge me if I dropped off a 9.25 ifs diff and you helped me rebuild it?

  • @scottm7341
    @scottm7341 ปีที่แล้ว

    That was easy, my driver's side axle shaft is really stuck. I bent the slide hammer foot thing bolted to the flange. Read somewhere that the retainer ring can get worn flat so they won't come out. What do I do? Cut the shaft off and pull the carrier?

    • @RecklessWrenchGarage
      @RecklessWrenchGarage  ปีที่แล้ว

      Remove the diff assembly with the shaft installed. Take the diff housing apart with the shaft still in it, take the bolt out for the center pin, slide the center pin out as far as you can and use a punch through the carrier to hit the shaft out.

    Thanks for the great video. I pulled out my AAM IFS 9.25 Front Differential from my 2002 Chevy Silverado 3500 LT LB7 and wanted to know how you removed the Axle Bearing adjuster. It was in and all of a sudden removed. Is there a special tool or did you use a drift to spin it out?

    • @RecklessWrenchGarage
      @RecklessWrenchGarage  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I used a drift, but you’ll want to be careful if doing the same.

    Dumb question... Can you weld a GM 8.25 IFS front diff? Not one that's full time AWD. So it will be a locked front end once you shift into 4x4? Is this a dumb idea?

    • @RecklessWrenchGarage
      @RecklessWrenchGarage  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You could, but you’ll constantly be spinning your driveshaft which could lead to further issues.

    • @RecklessWrenchGarage

    Question: Can I take out my 8.25 axle and replace it with a 9.25? Are they the same size?

    • @RecklessWrenchGarage
      @RecklessWrenchGarage  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The case and frame mounting points between the two are different so, no, it wouldn’t be a direct swap.
      I’ve read about people doing the swap and over coming all the obstacles, so it’s an option, but I don’t know the details.

    Did pinion depth change ? Did you just shim it the same as the old one? How is it checked on this unit?

    • @RecklessWrenchGarage
      @RecklessWrenchGarage  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The pinion depth is checked the same as a live axle.
      I was actually able to use the same pinion shim stack on the front diff.

      Eaton makes an E-locker for the 9.25, which is what this is.
      I don’t know if there is a locker available for the 8.25, but if you give Yukon a call, they could tell you. Or look it up on diffwizard.com

      Easy…Just weld the spider gears where the axles clip in. Or you can buy the carrier with welded spider gears for like $200

  • @mustang2433

    Is this the same process in a hummer H2

    • @RecklessWrenchGarage
      @RecklessWrenchGarage  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m not sure if the H2 uses the 9.25 or 8.25, but yes, the process would be the same since the mechanics of the two are the same.
