  • Going to a steak house is great but it's also gonna cost you a pretty penny. I say we can do this full steak meal completely homemade, on a tight budget with results that are... dare I say better?

This proves once and for all that the real secret to fine restaurant dining isn't technique, fancy plating or fancy schooling, but just, butter. Lots and lots of butter.

It helped me to do prep work on Sundays. Between working 50 hours a week and doing school work online, ate out A LOT. But I started doing prep work Sunday. Any rice, vegetables, etc got cooked Sunday. Meat got cooked Sunday and refrigerated or frozen. Then when I wanted it I just reheated and/or cooked pasta. Or do soups/chili. They always taste better after a couple days in the fridge. Lastly, I used an app called Mealime to build grocery lists. I pick the meals I want, it makes me a grocery list, and I've got however many meals I picked ready for the week.

    Requests for "But Cheaper":
    - Lobster (whole, bisque, tail, whatever)
    - Sushi (I know you did this in a regular vid, but some cheaper cuts of usable fish would be nice)
    - Truffle (A video about how to get truffle flavor into food without buying actual truffles / explain when truffle works in a dish)
    - Beef Wellington (Again, I know this was a regular vid, but if there is *any* possible cut of meat that could be substituted for the tenderloin, tell us. I drop over $100 every Christmas for our annual Wellington. I like doing it, but it is 'spensive.)
    - Wine (What are your favorite budget wines? What is the difference between expensive wine and cheaper wine? You could make this 3 whole episodes covering red, then white, then sparkling.)
    - Oysters (Is there a cheap way to get delicious, fresh oysters?)
    - Fine dining. (Could you recreate something from E.M.P. or Alinea or wherever at a much cheaper price point while maintaining the presentation? Say.... the floating taffy balloon?)
    - Spices. (What is a good substitute for saffron? Or other expensive spices?)
Hope this helps. Love the series.

I admit that eating out was always my 'entertainment'. When I was in Europe, I went to a Michelin starred restaurant in Italy and spent well over $150 on just myself (by myself) and coworkers were making fun of me. But when I asked them how much they spent on video games this month, alone, and pointed out, I don't play video games, they shut up. I'm a fair cook--by no means on your level, but I could probably plate this up and it would taste as good as a steak house. However, I can't recreate the service, ambiance, atmosphere, the Experience. Sadly for us all, prices are rising beyond my entertainment budget, and we're all going to be more than grateful for your excellent "cheaper" tutorials. Thanks for being there for us during this difficult time

    • @MarkDeSade100

As a gamer and foodie, I can say with confidence that video games are a much more effective way of getting a lot of entertainment for the least money than eating at fine dining restaurants. If your co-workers are spending $150 a month on games then they're doing it wrong. They're either buying a lot of AAA games or worse, wasting large amounts of money on pay-to-win garbage games which unfortunately some people are dumb enough to do. There are plenty of cheap indie games on Steam that can provide many hours of fun and the right AAA game can provide hundreds of hours of gameplay for $60 (or less if you catch it on sale).

Enjoyed your video. I do a lot of cooking at home for the same reason-you can get higher quality ingredients for the money that you’re saving. But also understand that much of the restaurant’s cost is for labor and overhead.

This is why I got into cooking as I honestly dont mind shelling out some dough for some nice food but I just personally think that alot of high end restaurants make pretty basic foods for what it's worth when I could invest that same amount of money into far higher quality foods and come up with a much better meal.

Thank you very much for the scoop man. I always struggle making a decent seafood dinner (usually fish steaks or shrimp) and end up eating out so I can have seafood cooked well. Can you do a nice seafood/shrimp dinner please?
