Can we reach a middle ground and agree that JRPGs are their own genre and still descendants of the classic Dungeons and Dragons? There’s still leveling up, collecting loot, exploring dungeons, killing monsters and often saving the Princess, or prince in some games.

I agree with you 100% on enjoying shorter games. As I get older and time is at more of a premium - divided between work, upkeeping my house, and spending time with my spouse - I find that I like playing and completing those shorter games more than games I could potentially never finish.

Also many games are filled with with boring / unnecessary sections to straighten the game length... never was a fan of this. I tend to stop playing during the game and never continue.

Let's Plays are a curious beast. About the only ones I keep up with are the players on the Hermitcraft Minecraft server. I think what keeps me coming back to them is that the dynamics between the players are interesting, and those people are so much more creative than me that it's interesting seeing their creative process at work in nice edited clips as you watch them build the world around them.
Re long games, I think a distinction should be made between open ended games vs just tedious fetch quest filled games. Games like Factorio, Minecraft, city sims, Dwarf Fortress, Rimworld, etc are ones where I feel no regrets when I see the 3 or even 4 figure hour counts.
Finally, holy shit what a wave of nostalgic awesomeness when the Witcher music started playing! The first one was definitely the best.
I always enjoy watching your vids. Thanks!

I like both short and long games but I think its harder to make a good long game than a good short game. Producing quality content in general is a difficult creative task, so coming up with 40 hours of content is necessarily harder than coming up with 10-15 hours of content. This might lead to a higher number of shorter games seeming better, but that's also because more of them can be made. I'd be interested to know if you think proportionally whether shorter or longer games have a higher percentage of "being good" instead of just total numbers. Good video tho.

    • @Cannotbetamed1
      @Cannotbetamed1  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I agree, I think it's easier to make good shorter games. A longer game not only has to be engaging, but it has to stay that way for a long time.

@@txa1265 As far as I remember it had three flaws compared to Origins. Location recycling that was a bit too frequent, fewer combat options to setup companion 'AI profiles' as well as you could in the first game and very limited variety in gear for you and companions. But the core story, characters and aesthetic improvements over Origins made it reach just about the same level for me.

Another unpopular gaming opinion I have: The Genesis has great sound. Some say: "Oh, the Genesis sound effects and music is horrible." Well, for some of the library, I'd agree with you. However, it has a grittier feel to it than the more orchestral sounding SNES. Listen to the Sonic games, the Road Rash games, the Streets of Rage games as well as the Shinobi games on Genesis, the music sounds amazing. I'll also make the argument for Mortal Kombat 1 and 2 on Genesis

I hate over the shoulder/ cinematic 3rd person camera because of the lack of symmetry and it feels awkward. Also it killed the classical 3rd person camera, with the player centered in the lower half of the screen. "Cinematic experience" ruins the feeling that you have control and are one with the character. Cinematic camera position, quick time events... these things made me quit playing certain games.
In the latest Tomb Raider games, every few steps you make, the camera starts giving you the "experience", and I'm always like "Hey! I'm playing here!".

As an avid Overwatch player I agree about it being addictive but not for the same reasons. The skins and loot boxes never really mattered much to me. But the quick pick up and play style always gets me. Like, I could start up and new game I haven't played... Or I could just play a few matches of Overwatch. Get right into the action and shut my brain off.

I understand the appeal of unboxing videos all too well.
Who doesn't like to open a new item? I don't think there is such a person, or that it ever has been, and an unboxing video is the closest proxy to opening a box yourself.
That doesn't mean it's a "good" alternative, but it's an alternative for those who crave for it.
As for "let's play" videos, I occasionally watch some. The appeal comes from either 1) watching someone play a game you like, 2) watching someone who is better than you so you can learn something, or 3) like to see and hear commentary on the game.

Regarding Shopping for video games. I don't like it either. I think the appeal is the "gambling factor" you don't know what you will find and you might get lucky. Like with a slot machine or a lootbox. There have been ample studies about this.

The length of behemoth games like witcher 3 is what beats me down. Witcher 1 had a great intermission when you get transported to murky waters and allows you to finally slow down for a bit and chill. Witcher 2 is great with how taylored each chapter is especially if you take the iorveth path and can absorb vergen fully. Flotsam was really well made as a believable town in the deep woods by the river. Witcher 3 suffered from it's size. Novigrad was great and kaer mohren too there were also many much smaller gems hidden in the vanilla game but the absolute behemoth size made the main game suffer and my body suffered through too much sitting to play it all. When you play the witcher 3 expansions you see where CDPR can really shine when they can focus their attention more and make more high quality stuff. The base game wanted you to travel and experience more of what a witcher would in his life - taking contracts to get rid of monsters but it did mean the game kinda suffered because it grew so big. It also kinda broke immersion from the story of finding ciri desperatly and quickly. Witcher 3 also lacked any true emphasis on non-humans except for the wild hunt, but honestly you could easily forget they weren't humans. I loved the dwarven town of vergen in 2 and flotsam had the whole iorveth conflict. 3's issues can be solved though by simply not trying to do everything on the map and completing every mission. Although that is hard given how many of the sidequests have quality cutscenes you'd expect to find only in main missions even in other AAA games. Hell Mass effect andromeda had over the shoulder dialog for almost everything except a few rare exceptions. Just ignoring most of the item caches on the map helps you get through the game immensely.

Ratio of fun to addiction in MMOs is a carefully-calculated mechanism, developers do focus tests and try to spread the fun parts between enough grinding and busywork so much the players will crave another dose of the fun part without making so much chores you quit from boredom. Single-player games generally don't need that and focus on fun all time, BUT the budget constrains force devs to make a sewer/garage level, or reuse assets after every time-and-money-consuming epic level they make.

I'm also a fan of short games. If a game can knock me off my feet in 4-8 hours, I'll replay it for hundreds of hours. If a game is good but takes hundreds of hours to get through to maybe 15 to 20 hours of good content, I'll either never finish it or never go back to it once I do.
I think JRPGs ARE real role playing games. Defining a game's genre is mostly about the game's primary focus: the effect it hopes to achieve within the video game medium. Every game will have elements of more than one genre embedded in it's DNA.
To address points you made in your other video, instead of posting in two separate places: Borderlands is a shooter. RPG stat building elements just give the shooting additional mechanical flavor. It's no more an RPG than FF7 is a snowboarding game.
Zelda games are 3D dungeon crawlers, searching hazardous dungeon areas for unique items in order progress is always the focus. There may be puzzles and combat scenarios standing in the way of progress, but those are typically shallow, supplementary mechanics, a means to the end of dungeon crawling. It's all about exploring the level to find things, it's about the dungeon traversal, it's about the crawl for key items. The story, characters, and world wouldn't be enough to get people to play the game on their own, they are just a thematic paint job on an amusement ride... you only care about Zelda because winning the dungeon crawler game helped you save her, and you only hate Ganondorf because he uses the story scenario to threaten the validity of your success at the game of dungeon crawling. Fighting can be avoided, or is incredibly simple. The act of dungeon crawling is typically what solves the puzzle, therefore it serves the dungeon crawling effect of the game. Genre.
The Resident Evil games are great examples of genre distinction. They aren't shooters, they aren't dungeon crawlers. Item gathering and the tank shooter mechanics aren't compelling on their own. Nobody would want to stop running and stand still while clumsily aiming at the general direction of an enemy and helplessly shooting them from within a fixed camera angle... unless they were trying to survive something horrific. The developers augmented these mechanical systems from other genres and combined them to serve the purpose of having the player attempt to survive some horrific creature rushing you in a creepily framed spooky setting.
The genre label reflects the specific effect, which is the core experience within its interactive video medium, as well as any variation in achieving that effect.
A game is an RPG when the world, characters, and story are the focus. Sub genres determine the various means by which a game achieves that focus, such as "turn-based" or "stat-based" or "character-builder" or "action-". What keeps these sub-generic mechanical elements from shifting the game outside the primary genre of "Role-Play" is typically the fact that these mechanics are insanely boring, totally pointless, mundane tasks... if not fueled by player desire to experience the feeling of living in a fictional setting, aka role playing. The main effort in making an RPG, on the developer's part, is typically making a scenario so compelling that it can successfully interest you in engaging with low effort, uncompelling, and otherwise pointless numbers-pushing mechanics for hours on end in order to experience it.
Who would care about how cool your character looks or how high your stats are in a Western "stat-based" or "character-builder" RPG if you didn't have an interesting world surrounding your character to make your choices meaningful?
Regardless of whether or not you think those elements being added to Japanese RPGs would improve the overall experience, the fact remains that the combat systems and explorative item gathering mechanics in these games would make for a pointless and menial game without the story, characters, and world around them. Without those things you could add all the player expression and choice you want and there wouldn't be a game. Those things are the point of the game.
From there it's a question of which set of mechanics give you more fulfilling sense of an RPG's world. Your motive in playing an RPG might be, I want to see myself in this fictional world. Or it might be, I want to live out someone else's storybook life in this fictional world. For whatever reason you like, RPGs are an escape to another life in another world.
Shooter games are still fun without that a compelling story scenario, believable characters, and detailed world. Fighting games are still still fun without that stuff. Dungeon crawlers are still fun without that stuff. Those games can have those things, but that wouldn't make them RPGs so long as they had more focus on another element. Those things just sweeten the deal for other genres, the same way other genre elements would sweeten the RPG deal, like they do with Witcher games. Or like shooting, driving, and various RP elements all sweeten the deal for the open world GTA games... all shallow on their own compared to dedicated genre games, but they effectively combine to compel players to explore every inch of an open world map.
The Witcher is an RPG. The choose your own adventure elements aren't compelling enough on their own to make the game, nor is the action combat, nor is the item synthesis, nor is the open world in Wild Hunt. You NEED the story, characters, and world or everything else is just shallow fluff, but because Witcher has those things, all the other shallower mechanics combine to support it.
And The Walking Dead series games are adventure, because the choices are compelling enough on their own to make the game... although you made a compelling argument for why they could maybe be considered RPGs. I still think not though, because the story and characters actually serve the mechanic, rather than the other way around. You wouldn't wanna watch these games like a movie if you couldn't see the choice when it's being made... it's just not that good as a cinematic story, but it does a fantastic job at creating compelling tension behind decision based input, which naturally elevates the impact of the game's story scenario in one's mind. The choice element is the main attraction of the ride, the point of you pushing buttons on the controller, the activity you have so much fun executing that you might even dream about it.
I get hooked on an adventure game, I dream about deciding what to do. I get hooked on a shooter, I dream about firing the guns. I get hooked on an open world, I dream about the most interesting places on the map. I get hooked on a racer, I dream about my cornering and braking technique. I get hooked on a 3D action game, I dream about jumping, blocking, dodging, and combos. I play a Zelda game, I dream about the dungeon design and getting important items.
I get hooked on an RPG, I dream about the characters and being in the world and things that might happen there.
Sorry I wrote you an essay for a years old video. This is just what I do for fun.
    Don't judge me... please.
I just discovered your channel and it's pretty awesome. What you said was interesting, it got me thinking.

You make plenty of good points and I'd never thought about jRPGs not being RPGs in the traditional sense. Having played so many jRPGs I came to equate the RPG genre as a whole with a long story, and stats & their progression rather than playing the role of a character even though I've played pen and paper RPGs since I was a teenager.
I have to disagree about Nintendo making bad controllers. Granted this is an old video but the Switch joycons are a saving grace for me. I'm slowly but surely developing carpal tunnel syndrome which makes standard controllers difficult to use. While it's insignificant for most people the constant stretching required to hit buttons or move a joystick really adds up for me. With joycons being so small the movements my fingers make are equally small which allows me to game far more comfortably. Even if we ignore my specific need for small Switch joycons I'd say Nintendo's 8 and 16 bit era controllers were great. The NES is, to my knowledge at least, the progenitor of all modern controllers. It gave us the now standard layout. The SNES controller was less revolutionary but I think was the first to give us shoulder buttons and had probably the best d-pad to date. SNES fighting games are still my favorite specifically because of that last point. With the SNES controller they also made something far more ergonomic. They've absolutely made some terrible controllers though, e.g. the N64.

    • @QJ89
      @QJ89 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

By all accounts, the Gamecube controllers were the best post-16B ones Nintendo have made. I've been thinking about getting one for the Switch!
Yeah, the N64 pads were flawed, in retrospect. But since I grew up with it, I never thought those colourful, 3-pronged ships were terrible.

I like linear more than big open world games cramped up with useless content to make you feel like they made a game full of meaningful content (aka Ubisoft games like Far Cry 5) and I also dislike these open worlds that are just an open world for the sake of being an open world, often resulting in a bland, empty and lifeless world.

Shorter games also have better replay value because they are less burdensome to replay -- games like as Portal 2, Inside, etc., which I've replayed many times. Hi there - I've been enjoying going through your back catalog of videos, seems you play a lot of the same games I do and have quite similar opinions on a lot of topics - I definitely agree that shorter games are almost always better. One thing I thought was worth mentioning is that while I totally get your thoughts about Let's Plays, I've kind of come around on them the last couple years. Partly because it seems that recently, demos aren't as available as they used to be, so it's hard to get a feel for how a game plays short of actually buying and playing it. So for me, odd as it may sound, Let's Plays kind of fill a gap that demos used to. Anyway, enjoying watching these videos, hope you enjoy making them!

9:50 THIS !!! Short good games, PLEASE ! I'm an adult now, I'm not bored out of my mind 99% of the time like I was when I was a teenager. When I play game, I want it to be good, not stretched out. I want to feel the progression, meaningful progression that can only happen 3-4 time in a game, not do stupid fetch quests, grind like a moron or "keep going, the game gets good after 20 hours in". I tried WoW once and got bored really quickly (like a week) and people were telling me "oh but it gets fun when you are max level and try to get loot, the leveling is only some kind of tutorial" well why cant it be fun too ? One of the best game I played this year took me 50 min to get through: A short hike. It had characters, progression, exploration, a short sweet wholesome story. It was short, it wasn't expensive, it was good all the way. No, I wont play Persona 5, yes the last of us 2 was 10 hours too long, yes I'll pay full prince for a "oNlY 10 hOuRs" game if those 10 hours are good.

I agree that a lot of the time-waster content (loot caches and all that, all those ? on the map) in The Witcher 3 did hurt the game. I loved The Witcher 3, but I found myself just skipping all that stuff after a few hours. It started feeling like a Ubisoft title when I went for them.
I thought the main issue with Dragon Age 2 was the encounter design, which ended up being really predictable.
    As for unpopular opinions:
Zelda: Occarina of Time was not all that great. I found the early 3D camera to be annoying even back then, and combat was just kinda dull, with enemies just standing on the sideline watching you. On a side note, Zelda 1 has not aged well. It might have been impressive when it was released, but even with my nostalgia goggles I don't really find the game to be very good these days.
Final Fantasy 7 was not all that great either. Between the blocky hands making the characters look downright ugly, and the story that was just padded, I found FF7 to be a rather lackluster title. Worst in the series? Nope, out of the ones I've played, 1 8 & 13 are worse (not played 2, 3 or any of the PS2 era titles), but when FF7 was released, I had already played plenty of text heavy story driven games, and the story was nothing special in FF7 compared to those.
Baldur's Gate 1 is like the above mentioned games, also not that good. Between the poor game balance (play as a mage and the difficulty curve is inverted), boring party members (most don't really have any personality) and repetitive encounters, BG1 just does not hold up well compared to any of the other Infinity Engine titles, nor compared to many other CRPGs.
Being a gamer is not a badge of honour, nor is it really anything special. I've lost track of the number of people I've run into who feel the need to really underline how much of a gamer they are, and how society does not understand them. So you play games? That's nice, so do I. But you don't need, nor should you rub it into someone's face.
The Call of Duty games are mostly well made. I don't love them, but I'm not going to jump on any hate bandwagon. They're quite well made in general, and just because somethings popular does not make it bad.
Inclusive genre definitions are better than exclusive ones. People love to bicker about their genre definitions, what game is in what genre, and more importantly, what game is not in what genre. I'm more of a fan of inclusive genre definitions, and if a game happens to end up in multiple genres, that's fine. This is hot of the heals of a discussion on a forum I had recently, where a person got so angry with me for claiming that Diablo & Rogue should be counted as RPGs that he ended up sending threats through PMs. Apparently not the first time that person has exploded over someone disagreeing with him though...
Origin is not bad, and Steam is not the be all end all service for PC. I personally find Steam's current position as a near monopoly to be rather worrying, and Valve has time and time again done things that I don't think they would be able to get away with, had they not had near complete market dominance. So we should preferably try to support steam's competitors, like GOG & Origin when possible, and make sure that Steam actually has some real competition.

OoT is one of those games I loved when it came out, but I don't ever want to play again. Nothing I've played recently on N64 has aged well and I don't want to ruin it. I never played Zelda 1 until recently and I didn't like it much at all.
I call myself a gamer, I'm not one who has been driven off by the bad associations. But at the same time, it does get used as a gatekeeping thing (I still get comments about how I'm not a "real" gamer, because I'm female). Do you play games? Do you want to be called a gamer? Congratulations, you are one!
I only played one CoD and I enjoyed the campaign. Don't feel the need to play it every year though.
      Thanks for leaving your thoughts!

It's not "gamers" themselves that I mind, but rather the kind who build their entire personality around the fact that they are gamers, and feel the need to constantly rub it into people's faces. And the same holds true for a lot of other fandoms, I don't mind people who enjoy anime, but I do mind those who repeatedly need to tell me how much they like anime and who keep adding common Japanese words into their sentences (or anime-common, for some reason I kinda doubt that "senpai" is quite as commonly used as they give the impression of ;) ). Hm, that did end up sounding a bit harsher than I intended.

Spending $40 on Super Mario Allstars + World is something I could do for a collection of games from my favorite series in the world but how about finding it along with 7 other SNES games (including Space Megaforce, which I would NOT be able to buy online so easily) for less than $15 at Goodwill?
I could go on, but then this post will be longer than it's already going to be. The point is, while deals like this don't happen very often (my last big find that I can think of happened late last year), the feeling of getting pricey games for chump change is quite the feeling to say the least and, even with the cheap stuff like -The Wrath of Cortex- Beach Spikers ( -Xbox- Gamecube) or Where in Time is Carmen Sandiego? (NES), you get them instantly and can enjoy that gaming goodness the minute you get home.
TL;DR - I like thrift store shopping for games too.

First, and probably the only thing short enough to bother reading in this comment - I love your opinion about Blizzard's game design.
Next - I spent way too long writing this:
I don't have strong feelings about any of these, except for probably the JRPG opinion. I think that opinion is either not fully expressed or is half-baked. Even comparing Final Fantasy to DND, the opinion doesn't really have merit because it's entirely possible and rather common to play in a DND campaign where the DM doesn't allow the party, and by extension the individuals, narrative freedom. You can only roleplay as far as your group/DM will allow you too. In a (J)RPG it's true that you have even less freedom and expression, but you are still taking on the role of the protagonists. You do get dialogue options, equipment options, skill options, and party composition options that are mostly, in some cases fully, customizable. It's simplistic by comparsion, but it's still roleplaying, you're just playing a premade character.
In (W)RPGs like Mass Effect, you are given the illusion of choice, because while you can choose from a set of options that do impact the game, you're still not in control of the effect, whereas in DND you can be. It's just like a (J)RPG, but it's less streamlined. This leads to a lot of interesting things on a first playthrough, but on a second playthrough you can see through the thin veil of perceived complexity to see that everything was already written in stone, and your choices were tacked on in an if-then sort of fashion. i.e. If Sole Survivor > NPCs mention surviving Thresher Maw at Akuze. If not Sole Survivor > NPCs still talk about Akuze, but you have no involvement mentioned.
It's impossible to make a video game that allows for 100% true roleplaying and then still have a cohesive narrative that's relevant to the RP. There have been attempts, and there have been some really good ones, but it's just not feasible.
Anywho, if you read that, more power to you. I'm subbing.

One unpopular opinion of mine is that I don't like big open world games. I don't like in Breath of the Wild how long it takes to get to the dungeons and due to the shrines being so small, doesn't allow for a lot of depth to the puzzles. Isn't that what Zelda games have always been about? Puzzles? It could easily be solved if Nintendo would let you get to the dungeons within an hour and give you the option to explore the world for longer if you wish like the other games. Instead they force you to explore the world, and about 10 hours in if you're good at open world games, you finally get to the first dungeon. I never even made it close after about 5 hours of gameplay and feeling incredibly lost the entire time. If Nintendo could combine the best of Link to the Past, giving you the whole map from the start, and the best of Breath of the Wild, giving the majority of people who like open world games, to explore if they wish.

It's a very similar case to movies. If a film is more than 2 hours long, I'm far less likely to rewatch it in the future. Heck, I love the Xenoblade games, but you'd be hard-pressed to ever get me to play one of these more than once. Heck, the only reason I've played Chrono Cross and FF7 three times each was because the first two times were back when I had just that much free time and I replayed them recently on modern consoles in order to pull off the many things I never did in my teen years. (Such as getting Chrono Cross' good ending... yeah, both times playing this game in my youth, I got the bad ending, the one you get from attacking the Time Devourer until it sucks you into a black hole)

Gosh, Pam. If these are unpopular opinions, mine must be just as unpopular. XBOne was definitely the best console of the 8th gen. PS4 exclusives aside, I used/use Xbox way more than PS. I have a nice stack of great PS4 exclusive games, but I have shelves of Xbox One games. I'm an online shopper too. I don't really like any Blizzard game. I will always take a great short game over a great long drawn out game. Lets me play more great games! I don't play PC so I never played Witcher 1, but I do like Assassins of Kings better than Wild Hunt. It just has a cooler feeling world to explore, but is a lot harder. And the goddamn Gwent cards in 3. Sigh, many hours wasted searching for those. Great Vid!

I am delighted that Quest for Glory got the love it deserves. Quest for Glory is the highest rated Quest game on GOG. Who's unpopular now? Ha!

I totally agree with you concerning both jrpg's and Blizzard games. Many jrpg's are great games in their own right, but they are a completely different genre of games than "ROLE playing games". As for Blizzard games, I've said the same thing many times... It's all about getting you hooked, and giving you that "Yes, but I MUST do this daily quests" or so forth, in order to keep you subscribing. I've sunk a ridiculous amount of time into WoW, but many of those were not hours I actually ENJOYED playing the game, but rather played from addiction. Same goes for Diablo III.

I also spent too much time playing WoW. The whole last year I didn't enjoy I just felt social obligation to not leave my guild and raid team.

I ran a popular Quest For Glory web site back in the day called "The Adventurers' Guild" where people uploaded save files to try out other people's characters. Those were good days, and the excitement was high during the QFG4 period. Then Five came out. And the party was over.
Unpopular opinion: *Quest For Glory V is okay* (we just weren't ready for such a sharp change in direction)

I really liked QfG5 at the time it released. I loved the setting and seeing old favourite characters. Now it’s the hardest one to get back into.

Quest for Glory V: Dragon Fire was the very first RPG I played. That game means so much to me, I play it every year. To me, the kind of freedom and quantity of features it has is phenomenal, especially considering the time it was released. I wish Lori and Corey would work on a sequel after Hero-U: Rogue to Redemption.

I’d love to see a new game where you got to be a magic user. Or pick your class.

I approve of the whole "adventure games never died" opinion :) Will really have to look into the Quest for Glory series, could be I've been missing out all this time in favor of KQ!

I definitely recommend them. There are remakes of the first and second if text commands aren't your thing (I find them hard to get into now).

Well I had plenty of practice with text commands back in the day so I'd be prepared to give the originals a go!

I'm entirely onboard the shorter games train. Adulting is hard! I rarely get the time to sit down and invest time into an epic 80+ hour experience these days. Some of the most fun I've had recently were from Superhot and Firewatch. Both really short, but focused on what they wanted to be.

I loved Firewatch. The more games that can tell an effective story in a handful of hours, the better.
