Your aunt is cool as hell. I remember the Leisure Suit Larry games being almost mystical as a kid. Everyone knew what they were but never got to play them. Great video!

I'm currently in MN visiting my brother so it'll be another week before I can start my response video. I hadn't realized you'd uploaded this yet so I was really confused when my subs started blowing up the last couple days. So, yeah. Thank you for that. Also great responses, your list has given me a lot to think about (I've also realized how woefully inexperienced I am in PC point and clicks).

Thanks for sharing, Pam! Loved your story about the Leisure Suit Larry experience. I think your descriptions of how impactful game audio can be to our memories were spot on; it's wild how quickly and vividly sounds (and smells, to be fair) can conjure up the places and situations we were in so many years ago.

+Cross Chop Yep, I can see myself sitting at my basement computer at my mom's old house when I hear the Under a Killing Moon or Lands of Lore music.

Oh my god, Under a Killing Moon is forever one of my favorites! When I fired this video up I immediately thought that game would be perfect on a list like this...and then there it was! The sequels were okay but UaKM is the best. I met Margo Kidder at ComicCon a few years ago and asked her if she remembered it. She said yes and that with the blue screen and limited actor interaction, she had no idea what they were doing, but nobody had ever asked her about it before me. Great choice!

Strangely, the thing I remember most about Leisure Suit Larry was calling a 900 number for a hint when I was stuck in one of them (this was pre-Internet!). That and the ridiculous number of floppy disks the Amiga version came on. I also remember the trivia questions and breaking the game once when I tried to do something the programmers hadn’t thought of.

Probably for me, my list would consist of games like Star Castle, Mr. Do!, Gorf, Galaga, and Moon Patrol. I got started in gaming at a very early age, and it all began walking past arcade games and becoming fascinated with the moving light images on the screen. Those are five of the first games I remember playing in arcades, and I can remember playing Star Castle especially at the age of 4 back in 1982. I've been told that I turned a few heads in the process since I blew up the castle in the center of the screen a few times at that age.

All good games in you list.
Mine would go something like this:
    5. Castlevania
    4. Raptor, Call of the shadows
    3. Civilization
    2. Alien Storm (!)
    1. Sonic the hedgehog
All of these still get many hours of play every year, awesome times :)

One of my nostalgia games is Marian Memorandum, the second Tex Murphy game. I love the story of Access Software, how Chris Jones started out as an accountant for an engineering company who decided to humor the employees' aspirations to make a golf game for the C64, and he ended up as a noir detective, acting along side actual Hollywood professionals. Only in the 80s and 90s early computing era could that wild ride happen!

I have trouble narrowing down my Top 5, but... in reverse order...
    5. Super Mario Bros - me and my mate used to play the arcade machine in a pub we used to go to (yes, I'm THAT old...) - being able to play at home the day I bought my NES was amazing.
    4. Lemmings on PC - First time I played a game, literally ALL night.
    3. Unreal/Quake 2 - the first games I played after installing my 2 x 12MB Voodoo 2 3DFX cards. Earliest adoption of SLI before anyone knew what SLI was. Absolutely blown away at how stunningly gorgeous 3D accelerated games were. I watched the intro sequence to Unreal over and over and over...
    2. Metal Gear Solid on PS1. Best stealth game ever. Got the Japanese collectors edition to play on my NTSC-J PS1. The collectors edition was such a cool set and the game was sublime. Still to this day, one of the best soundtracks to any game.
    1. Ninja on Sega Master System. Odd choice, but I had SO much fun playing this game and was a very very happy time in my life. All was well with the world, it was 1986, I was 20, I had a gorgeous GF who loved playing video games, I had a great job that I actually looked forward to going to and I played Ninja for hours and hours. The music alone is enough to get me choked up with nostalgia.

The best thing about First Communions are getting video games as gifts. I got my NES for mine. I was nine. I don't know if that's old for a First Communion, but it was worth going through it to get my NES!

I can't add much to your list, Pam, because I didn't have a PC of my own till I was almost an adult. So my nostalgia list is largely console games. And these are in no particular order. At school, the only PC game we ever got to play was Oregon Trail. So that one brings me back. But as for the rest? The Streets of Rage games ont he Genesis, Ninja Turtles on the NES and SNES, Mega Man 3 especially, and Sonic the Hedgehog which I'm pretty sure I own a version of on every machine I have. I do recall those sound effects from RBI though, rented that one weekend myself.

Very interesting list. I noticed that many of these titles are PC games, although I was a console kid, myself. I have a lot of fond memories of specific games. I remember spending an entire summer playing Shining Force, leveling my main character up to Level 93 just because. Sonic the Hedgehog 1 is like a Zen experience for me; I can just put it on and relax. I used to spend weekends at my dad's house playing Super Mario Brothers 3, and I'd play through from start to finish and refuse to use warp whistles (always thought they were cheating). One of my favorite memories is of Mega Man 4, which is the first game I bought by myself brand new at launch. I saved up my allowance for three months--which was supposed to also go to pay for school lunches, so my mom used to wonder why I was always so hungry when I got home from school. I walked up to the counter at the game store, slapped down a was of five dollar bills, and demanded "I want Mega Man 4!" (I like to think it was a lot cuter in reality than it sounds.)

Totally Rad; Streets of Rage; Dynasty Warriors 5; VTM: Bloodlines; and Final Fantasy VII. Those are the games that come to my mind whenever I'm about to die of boredom, and my mind wanders towards the next sentence: "I would rather be playing _________". So many good memories, and epic stories of heroic gaming.

Nice list, Pam. Not really a PC gamer as I always had a console of some sort. Here is My Top 5 Nostalgic Games:
    5. Road Rash (PS1) - This was my stepdad's favorite game and remember spending many a night playing this with him. It is not my favorite entry in the series but I have the most memories with it. I play it every February 15th (his birthday), may he R.I.P.
    4. Sonic The Hedgrhog (Sega Genesis) - This was one of the first games I ever played and almost 25 yrs later, I still love it. Also, the first game I ever completed 100%. Yes, Sonic 2 is the best from that era and is my favorite Sonic game but Sonic 1 has a special place in my heart.
    3. Streets of Rage 2 (Genesis) - It is just one of those games where I can play again and again and just won't be bored. Plus, the groovy house music! The fan made remake is even more awesome.
    2. Mortal Kombat I & II (Sega Genesis) - I know, it's a tie! The first fighting game series I ever played. I remember playing it at my cousin's house when I was about 5 years old and I couldn't stop playing the game until I got MKII a few years later. I love the soundtracks, love everything about the first two games, eventhough they may not have aged well. Especially the first but MK is my favorite fighting game franchise and I have so many great memories with it. Still play them both once in a while.
    1. Final Fantasy 7 (PS1) - I love this game! One of my all time faves. This was the first RPG I have ever played. I know the game in and out and have beaten it at least 30 times and literally did everything, including beat the superbosses. I even have some of the soundtrack on my phone. The game from an aesthetic standpoint doesn't hold up as well but it is one of the games where I can overlook that. I love FF6 and FF9 dearly but 7 was my first.
Honorable Mentions: Tekken 3 (PS1) - Tekken 2 was the first Tekken game and one of the first PS1 games I have ever played but I have so many memories of T3. I remember for hours playing it with family, especially Team Battle and Tekken Force Modes. Oh yeah.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV: Turtles in Time (SNES) - I remember as a little kid playing the second TMNT game in the arcades but when we bought Turtles in Time for the SNES, we were hooked as we were huge TMNT fans. I still own it on SNES to this day.

+Brasel TheGamer I remember it being so jarring playing Q4G 2. I played the point and click remake of 1, and going to a text-based game for the next was so weird. I heard there was a fan remake of 2, I'd like to play it. I remember really liking that game but I don't know if I have the patience for text commands now.

    My top Nostalgic games are
    1. Mega Man 2 (NES)--Best soundtrack ever. It grips you from the intro (Yes. A small intro before the title screen even pops up) and keeps your heart pumping and head thumping throughout the whole adventure
    2. Double Dragon II (NES)--My first experience with storyboards in game. They were static cutscenes, but I still marvel at them everytime I read through them. Double Dragon 3 is a good one too, but it is too insanely difficult, and I cannot unsee "Bimmy and Jimmy" lol
    3. Jackal (NES)--Simple graphics, even simpler gameplay, but all around fun. I used to read the between stage transition screens in a really dramatic fashion like I was really at war.
    4. Rush 'N Attack (NES)--Similar to Jackal with the Nostalgic feels except stage transitions were in real time. I still marvel at how after stage one you see your soldier climb a fence and hop over the top of it and then boom! Stage 2 starts.
    5. Sonic the Hedgehog (1 & 2) (SEGA Genesis)--I had to combine these because Green Hill Zone is my jam, but Sonic 2 is my favourite game of all time, and I know that it must be because of nostalgia because up to this day I've never met anyone that is as passionate about Sonic 2 as I am
    Honourable Mentions
Streets of Rage 2 (SEGA Genesis)--This game remains my favourite brawler of all time. Streets of Rage 3 is my second favourite because it was more of the same.
Mortal Kombat II (SNES)--turn on your SNES with this cart in it and hold the L and R button at the same time. The sound design in this game is perfect. Great haunting music, bone crunching hits (it is like you can actually feel every uppercut lol) and excellent sound effects. It gave us sounds like Liu Kang's bicycle kick and Raiden's Thunder flight. Don't forget Jax's Gotcha grab and the toasty guy lol

For me, the Sydicate games from bullfrog on the PC will always evoke a special feeling, the Blade Runner game is a classic, Decap Attack on the Genesis/Megadrive is crazy and kind of memorable and I also liked Star Wars Bounty Hunter on the PS2. :)

Its brilliant. Follows the tone of the film wonderfully and almost has the feel of an FMV without being one. Apparently it has 16 endings, which Ive only ever found two of. I used to have it but lost it, so I downloaded a torrent of it a few years ago - worked great apart from the gun range, which was a bit of a shame but there we go. If you find it it is well worth a play-through.

There are actually 2 games before Under a Killing Moon. Mean Street & Martian Memorandum, but Under a Killing Moon was the first FMV game in the series (and where I feel the series really gets started).
And those are some very good you managed to play when you were a kid. If you're looking for something Lands of Lore-like, check out the Eye of the Beholder series. It's by the same devs (except for the third one), and while a tad bit less refined than Lands of Lore, they're still very good.
As for most nostalgic? Eh, hard one. Going with:
Super Mario Bros (cliche for sure, but I remember playing it at a friends home, and it was what got me into gaming)
Alley Cat (played it with my second cousin as a kid, and despite only playing it once back then, it really struck a cord with me)
Civilization 2 (my best friend back then was completely obsessed with this game, and his obsession was addictive)
Bubble Bobble (NES version, a game I played with both my sister and my second cousin a lot as a kid)
Pac-man (Atari 2600 version. Even though the NES had been out for years, my parents got a used Atari 2600 with a bunch of games, and this was one of them. While a crummy port by any standards, young me played this obsessively. These days it's not the actual game itself that brings back warm fuzzy memories, just the sound effects)

    • @Cannotbetamed1
      @Cannotbetamed1  8 ปีที่แล้ว

Yeah, I've played all the Tex Murphy games. Though, I never finished the non-FMV ones. I found that part where you had to get around in the speeder completely incomprehensible.
Eye of the Beholder looks cool, I'll check it out.

Six years late, but here is my Top5 in no particular order:
    - Mega Man 2
    - Metal Gear
    - Guardian Legend
    - UFO: Enemy Unknown (XCOM: UFO Defence)
    - System Shock
    Honorable mentions:
    - Faxanadu
    - Shadow Warrior (Ninja Gaiden)
    - Lands of Lore
    - ShadowCaster
By the way, I was just going to suggest Legend of Grimrock when you mentioned it =D

Great list, Pam! Sadly, I have yet to push into the second half of StarTropics, despite owning it. Really interesting set of games to fill out your list. I missed the boat on early PC titles since we didn't get one until later, and the games I was picking up and playing were mostly shareware (Doom and Quake, among others).
If you haven't already checked out my list, you should - I did a similar video for my own selections.
On a side note, I totally understand wanting to say "Must-algic" :)

My most nostalgic are Chrono Trigger as it's what got me into JRPG's and is like my comfort food that have to break out every once in awhile; Excitebike as it (along with Duck Hunt) was the one game my dad would play with me, always making new tracks to test each other; Yo-Noid! as I believe it was the 1st game I ever beat; California Games as it was that game when got together with all my cousins we'd try to rent and gather around for the day competing in all the events; and Uncharted just because when I was married my ex wasn't a big gamer but she really wanted to try it so we'd sit for a bit each night after kids went to bed and she'd do the exploring and then pass the controller to have me do the battles.

    5. Back to the Future & Ghostbusters (NES) -- Back to the Future had nothing to do with the movie, as far as gameplay. Lol. There was no Huey Lewis and the News music in the background; or, even, the classic John Williams score. You threw bowling balls to defeat enemies which included bees, a "bully", bowling pins, hoola-hoop girls, and men carrying plates of glass. Lol
As for Ghostbusters... I grew up watching the movie since I was 3 years old. I owned the original vinyl record, I had every toy you could think of; including the proton pack, firehouse, and ghost hunting accessories. Then... to top it off... I could be the Ghostbusters driving around the city helping to rid the various threats. Hard as hell, but having Ray Parker Jr's song playing over and over was worth it. Lol
    4. Kirby's Adventure (NES) -- I would wake up every single morning at 5am to play this game and beat it within 45 minutes so that I could, then, get dressed and ready for school.
    3. Super Mario Bros. 3 (NES) -- Not only was I hopping around for joy after receiving this game for Christmas of 1990, but I, damn near, had a heart attack when I saw Mario fly, for the first time, with his raccoon ears and tail. It was absolutely magical. Lol
    2. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (SNES) -- took me 4 years to beat this game. After receiving the 3 medals of Courage, Wisdom, and Power I obtained the Master Sword. From there, you head back to the castle to fight Aghanim -- a minion of Ganon. Upon beating him... you find out that you have to, then, obtain 7 crystals containing the descendants of the 7 wise men (sages) that sealed Ganon previously. I was fed up and done. Lol. I put it away for years until I, finally, gave it a shot, beat it, and began the journey of love for this game and franchise.
    1. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (N64) -- solidified my love for the Legend of Zelda franchise and blew my mind no matter how many times I played it.
Honorable mention -- Duke Nukem (1990 PC). The first game I ever played on a PC. Duke Nukem was hardly the badass he portrayed in later titles, and it was a side-scrolling game. I would play this game every chance I got when visiting my dad's house.

Unfortunately I haven't actually played any if the six games you mentioned here. I played games as a kid but I never owned a console until the N64 came out, and even then I only had a handful of games. Two of which would make my Top 5 Most Nostalgic Games list. Those would be Castlevania and Jet Force Gemini. Then I'd have to go with Speedy Gonzales: Los Gatos Bandidos and Super Mario World for the SNES. My youngest video game memory however, is playing Super Mario Bros on the NES with my cousin Andrew. He'd always pause the game, purposefully, as I was jumping a gap and make me fall. The downside of being player two I guess.

Quick question: What is your opinion on the QFG5, compared to the other QFGs? It was my first game in that serie, and I think it ties with QFG4, which everyone admits that it is the best. I did a playthrough from 1 to 5 as a Thief/Mage, at first just to get that sweet import bonus, but it kinda got out of my control, like all things, as I started bawling at Erana dream sequences. :D
    As for my Nostalgia:
    1) Planescape Torment (Good Lady above there is no contest)
    2) Grim Fandango (You gotta love that noir)
    3) Ties with Monkey Island 3 and Icewind Dale

I remember playing Under a Killing Moon, I had to change discs fairly often though because the game, though set up in chapters did not have each DISC as a chapter but rather areas I traveled to and stuff. As I remember anyway.
Legend of Grimrock is an amazing dungeon crawler, so is the sequel though I have yet to complete that one. Sadly I never grew up with those sort of games, I have tried some of the older ones later on after Grimrock but they just felt too clunky. Still love the concept though. I would have liked the same concept set in a more sci-fi setting. Someone was making a game like that but I am not sure if it ever got completed.
Nostalgia seems to be the hardest word? ;-)

    • @Cannotbetamed1

Thinking of my top 5 nostalgic games The first game that comes to mind is a MMO called Perfect World International. It was my first MMO and whenever I hear music (chinese instrumental) my mind always goes back tot the game and makes me want to go back and just visit some of my most favorite areas. I couldnt play the game again as its kinda ruined by both the chinese company and the company that released it in the west.
The next game would have to be Might and Magic six. My aunty bought the game at a garage sale thinking she could play it on her xbox. Obviously no, so she gave it to me. I spent hours on that game. I loved it for at the time a older title. I have digital version from GoG now to.
Number three has to be (rhymed tehe). Pokemon Ruby. I remember seeing the advert for the game and seeing everyone with their pokemon and I was like I want that to. I knew about pokemon from a kid I babysat but never played it. So after seeing that add went to my my dad (rhyming again) and asked him for a GBA and the game. I got ruby because the kid had sapphire and I could then trade with him.
My fourth game would have to be Final Fantasy X. Again I remember seeing the add for it and its metal intro as sin decimates Zanarkind. Also being already huge into FF I had to have the game. Once again good ol dad came through got me a PS2 and the game.
Lastly would have to be Legend of Dragoon. It was the game that taught me how to play JRPGs. Prior to that I had borrowed FF7 from a family friend. I had no idea what I was doing and died to the the scorpion boss at the beginning and was like screw this Im going back to crash bandicoot. We got a multi compilation demo disc with LoD on it. You could play from after the Helena prison right up until the Urobolus (had to look that one up) boss at the end of the cave. You also could use dragoon transformations to. Through spending hours on that demo I learnt the value of healing items and spells. Plus grinding for levels etc.
I definitely have more nostalgic games but these would have to be my top 5. FF7 should get a honorable mention to but the explanation for that would be in book form XD. I think Iv already written enough haha.

Ah, Under A Killing Moon. Pure classic. I remember I paid a fortune for it when it was new, since it was on CD-ROMs and all. xD

I didn't pay for it myself, but I remember it taking some convincing for my mom to buy it because it was so much.

Glad you succeeded. ;) This was one of the first games I bought with my own money, but all the good old sierra games, my parents had to be talked into buying for me.
