      Miyazaki and his team were quite productive these 10 years. Every year there are new projects. If you asked me about the main game of the decade, I would unconditionally say Dark souls. Imitators are now coming from all sides. Many in our maestro’s place would simply clip the same souls, but he manages to deepen his mechanics. What is the Sekiro combat worth? We are waiting for a new project like Sekiro, where progress was evident. For me, the ideal setting would be the age of piracy with the inherent dark atmosphere of souls games.

    Dark Souls 1 - Gwyn links the First Flame in order to prolong the Age of Fire, an act so unnatural it causes the undead curse and screws up the flow of time in Lordran.
    Dark Souls 2 - You are undying, with time everything that you are will fade until nothing is left. You will be like Vendrick, an empty shell endlessly pacing a dark room.
    Dark Souls 3 - The cycles of Fire and Dark have been going on for so long the universe itself is tired and just wants it to end.
    Sekiro - Kuro is immortal and can share that immortality with others. He wants you to find a way to kill him because immortality is a curse.
    Elden Ring - The Elden Ring is shattered, the Golden Order is broken and can't be restored, it is futile to try.
    A major theme in all these works is that lingering on forever is unnatural, it's okay to just let go and move on.

      That whole thing is kinda why I think Dark Souls wasn't intended to actually be a series in the beginning at all, and was meant to be a standalone game. It was what I got from DS3's narrative screaming at every opportunity that it didn't want to exist.

    I no way am I opposed to a Bloodborne 2, heck I think even Dark Souls 4 would be a neat idea, but I deeply understand the lack of enthusiasm for sequeles on Miyazaki's part. Its not just that you have to make the sequel fit the 1st work, creating a sequel for something that originally had none would require the restructuring of the 1st work to fit the sequel (at least mentally): the sequel would add something that wasn't there before.

    Right now bloodborne has an incredible amount of untapped potential. It has the best atmosphere I have ever seen in a video game. It’s hard fun satisfying and has a very interesting story.
    But it’s being held back by so many things. Like it being stuck in both the 30 fps and PlayStation jail. The chalice dungeons feeling horrible to play and in many ways not feeling like they belong at all with how Samy disconnected and unnecessarily cryptic they are. And of course the many inconsistencies like not being able to reset or travel between lamps at lamps and having to farm for healing and parrying.
    That’s why I’m Desperate for Fromsoft to do SOMETHING with bloodborne again. Sequel, prequel, remaster, remake, port a godamn update to uncap fps on ps5 Whatever just anything to tap that potential

    Miyazaki’s comments about his disinterest in sequels largely comes from making sequels to games which are already finished. It is my opinion that Elden Ring will have a sequel not just because of its success, but in Miyazaki predicting it’s success planning and imagining Elden Ring as a game which was built with a sequel in mind.

    • @nono-lz9qr
      @nono-lz9qr ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@nono-lz9qr I think we need to see how the DLC changes things before we say anything definitive. There are some story bits that could be better filled in with some kind of sequel, mainly the stuff involving Miquella. While I do think the Miquella stuff will be filled in with the DLC, there's no telling if the DLC will open up any further possibilities.

    • @manray5140
      @manray5140 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think the perpetual ages of light and dark in the world of Dark Souls were ever meant to be cyclical. It is this inclusion into the franchise which is the focus of both sequels, and I think it is a brilliant examination on the effect of perpetual sequels as well. Dragging on forever until the original meaning is diluted and scattered as see in The Ringed City.
      I believe Elden Ring isn't a story entirely centered on the Elden Ring or the event of the Shattering. These events really seem to be a smokescreen for the true focus of the game. The influence of the various outer gods which inhabit and influence the Lands Between with their empyreans, their puppets, and their greater wills. The Tarnished like many other factions in Elden Ring are manipulated by outside forces to do the bidding of others hidden behind the scenes. The result of which has left the land scarred and beyond repair. Life and Death are at odds with each other and nature is completely out of balance as a result.
      These themes don't need to be carried out over an endless cycle. I think we can infer from the events of this game that a sequel would primarily revolve around fighting a battle we choose for ourselves against the forces of the outer gods. The story of the Lands between isn't over. We've just killed a God and now we will wait for the consequences.

    • @nono-lz9qr
      @nono-lz9qr ปีที่แล้ว

      @@manray5140 I suppose, but at the same time I feel those same talking points could be used to justify sequels to the other soul’s games.
      Bloodborne has multiple Great Ones who meddle in story. Most prominently would be Odeon, who impregnates the prostitute, the Moon Presence, who keeps the Hunter’s Dream going and keeps certain hunters immortal until their duty is done, as well as Kos, who curses all hunters to inevitably fall to blood-drunkenness. There’s also the lesser involved ones, who are more being used by the church. This would include Rom, Ebreitas, and the Mensis brain. It could be said that the Hunters are the ones caught in the middle, cleaning up after the Church and indirectly coming in contact with Great Ones, as seen in game with the PC.
      To a significantly lesser extant, you could say the same about Demon’s Souls and its Old One.
      Just because there are big players in the background doing things, doesn’t mean that there will be sequels tackling them. And while I WISH any of FromSoft’s stand-alone games would get a sequel, I heavily doubt any will.
      Truthfully, the only game I could see getting a sequel would be Sekiro, since it’s secret ending really sets the stage for another adventure, this one in Korea.

I especially like how they don't reuse their IP. Things like lore (the cycle of superficial dark and light where actually humanity is subject to an alien "god" no matter what is ONLY used in that one FromSoft game for example), characters (we all remember those unique one-off characters like Patches, and I think we can all agree they'd be less impactful if they'd been reused over and over in all of FromSoft's games), weapon designs (who can forget MOONLIGHT from Armored Core 3? I'm sure we all would if it were just a generic weapon in every FromSoft game), gameplay (we've been blessed with so many fresh and new paradigms thanks to FS's strict adherence to new IP; for example, the game where you have a dodge animation with s, stamina management, fighting enemies that are mostly larger than you, checkpoints you go back to when you die, but you drop a resource when you die and have to go back and get it but lose it forever if you die again first- that one was my favourite!) and so on, certainly never just copying established and well-known games from other developers like Capcom or Konami, and always making their own IP, like they did for their hit PSP title Monster Hunter Diary: Poka Poka Airou Village.

      I see some people asking for bloodborn 2 sometimes, I guess that's why bloodbonre cart became a meme lol. I wouldn't be against that ether, the world has so much potential and the trick weapons make sure the combat stays fresh.

      I've heard some interesting ways they could do it, one however would of forced the take that the "baby great one" ending IS the canon ending as a main character in the game you'd interact with would of been the doll from the hunters dream who now held a familair scythe on her back and constantly guarded a baby carriage (presumably where the new baby great one would be).
      Of course that does create issues of how they got out of the hunters dream and if thats possible for the doll let alone a baby great one but-
      The easiest and simplest way they could continue it though could be that a member of the healing church smuggled the blood, or even somehow a baby great one or an essence of one out of Yharnam and into a new location. Could be for religious power, for money, etc. It would in the end start a new scourge of beasts which might attract great ones to the loctation making everthing worse for the people there, more violent and corrupt beasts since they'd all be coming from a healing church only mindset since none of the people there would know any other way like the choir.
      There are the issues of course of where would a hub be and how could it work this time since the reason we could die and come back was because of the hunters dream, they could remake it with different great ones and system or make it much more interesting by making your character a vileblood, since they were in a way immortal, explaining now why the new townsmen would hunt you alongside all the new beasts as well since the church and vilebloods were rivals.
      More issues to think about with all of that, but simple ideas!

    12:29 You say we may not have gotten Bloodborne, Sekiro, and Elden Ring if FromSoftware always would’ve just made Dark Souls games, but we got Elden Ring, which means except for Bloodborne and Sekiro (where you’re right), Elden Ring could’ve just been Dark Souls 4 because it is just Dark Souls 4 in disguise of a new IP. Elden Ring would’ve definitely still been possible had they never made Bloodborne or Sekiro, ending up being the next game releasing after Dark Souls 3. Had Elden Ring been a new original experience like Miyazaki says he always wants to make, it would’ve differentiated itself enough from Dark Souls to know that the real Elden Ring game Elden Ring had the potential to be (but didn’t in the end) wouldn’t be possible if they had just continued making Dark Souls games.

    As I've been going through Elden Ring, I've realized that to say this game was heavily influenced by all previous From titles is an understatement. Elden Ring isn't influenced by these games, It's a celebration of the developers history, and is quite literally like playing all the soulsborne games at the same time. All of the side dungeons in ER are the exact concept of Bloodborne chalice dungeons, except built right into the open world which I find is absolutely incredible. For a developer in the current gaming era, to take something like chalice dungeons and find a new and impactful way to incorporate those into the open world is honestly pretty amazing. The game is riddled with little tidbits coming from all the other games. A cynical position might be to see these reoccurring aesthetics and enemies as uncreative, and simply reusing old assets but to me it always felt like a nod to the previous experiences I've cherished and I believe that was the real intention. Seeing something and going "oh wow, that's just like Bloodborne, that's just like dark souls 3" is so awesome. I want Bloodborne remastered and Bloodborne 2 as much as anyone else, but I have to admit some of the parts of this game are almost like "we know you want more Bloodborne feels, and so here is this little Bloodborne inspired area." It's like a dev decides, hey let's take all the best ideas of all our previous IPs, and integrate them into our new game in the best way possible. Honestly, most gaming devs have only managed to pull off the occasional one off masterpiece, but many of our beloved gaming companies have brought themselves to ruin over the years. From stands apart from the rest

They could’ve done sooo much more with the IP and gone all out on creativity, they really had the golden opportunity, but no. I am completely 180° on your take on developers making one masterpiece but fails with a later release while FromSoftware always makes one after the other, because I think FromSoftware made masterpiece after masterpiece UNTIL Elden Ring, which means they succumbed to the same fate as well. Elden Ring taught me no developer is safe from the disappointment curse.

    I don't get how FromSoft fans claim that their rpgs are different games, when Elden Ring is literally Dark Souls with a different cutscene at the beginning and end. I really don't like how similar the gameplay and game feel is between Dark Souls, Demons Souls, Bloodborne and Elden Ring. It really undermines the whole "new IP" hype when the core gameplay and a lot of enemies to interact with the core gameplay are just copy pasted from the previous games with a few stats tweaked in a spread sheet.

      Ignoring the part that making Darks Souls 3 again but making you ride a horse to the next area instead of having a loading screen doesn't really feel like a "new IP", I think that Elden Ring's world design is visually stunning, but very simplistic in gameplay.
      It's flat grass fields with nothing in them (or the area's "grass fields" equivalent), which you go through to get to either:
      1) Big Points of Interest which are closed, semi-linear, "labyrinth-like" areas with a boss in the middle and end, so basically just Dark Souls levels (which are usually great), or
      2) copy-pasted caves with copy-pasted enemies and a reused boss for the 5th time at the end. They remind me of BotW's Shrines, but without the occasional interesting puzzle and without the certainty that there will be anything useful at the end of it.

      @@unsungzero6122 Sure it's different, and I'm happy for the people who liked it better than Souls games, but arguing that Demon Souls and Dark Souls and Elden Ring are in any major way a unique Intellectual property just doesn't sit right with me.
      Assassin's Creed games have almost copy-pasted gameplay. They differ in story and the world you explore, but they're still all Assassin's Creed games.
      Most modern Call of Duty games are basically the same with new stories and new levels, but even Warzone, the game with copy-pasted gameplay mechanics from an other game, with the difference being it put the player character in an open world battle royale, is still called Call of Duty Warzone, because that's just what you do. Nothing wrong with making a game franchise.
      It's just a little strange for them to be doing this, and it's ridiculous for fans to be praising it, when the reality is that a new IP is meaningless when the general gameplay, tone, movement, combat, player interaction etc. is very similar to a previous IP, or in some (or a lot) of cases it's literally copy-pasted to save development time.

    From Soft has plenty of sequels under their belt, to say they shy away from it I think is not an accurate statement, they have far more titles that are in a series than not (and you can really thank Armored core for that), but there is Dark Souls and Kings Field as well. There is also Otogi and Lost Kingdoms also. That being said I am all for not pursuing them Sans Armored Core (You made and revived this Monster, now feed it), but there are some benefits not to. While not direct sequels, Sekiro, Bloodborn, and Eldin Ring were spiritual successors to Dark Souls. This gave players more of what they wanted (all be it with a little innovation here and there) and you didn't have to feel like you had to play the previous game to understand all the lore. Honestly in this day and age, there is no reason for them to make a sequel, tell a good story and end on a high note, if more needs to be added, DLC or expansion. We see it all to often, where people beat a horse to death, lets look at Anime\Manga for a sec, going to name a couple here to cite examples. One Piece, Bleach, and Coyboy Bebop. All well known and well liked (if you eliminate filler from the 1st 2 Anime). Now One Piece is arguably the longest series of the lot and for good reason and it is heralded as one of the best for good reason, the formula works with this though it is getting beyond long in the tooth and they should probably consider retiring it. Now lest look at the Shortest, Cowboy Bebop, also one of the best ever made.....why? Because it did what it was set out to be, and did a damn good job at it. Now Bleach, I love cannon Bleach.....up to Eisen, the story built up to a thunderous crescendo, and should have ended there, and in my personal opinion, everything that came after just ruined it for me. That is what I think From Soft is trying to avoid, tell the story they want to tell, and leave it on a prominent note .

      Bloodborne 100% needs a remaster for Ps5 and PC. Its CRIMINAL that it only sold sub 3 million copies. It would easily be at least 10-15 million if it were on PC and PS5.

    In my opinion, the reason why Fromsoft Games never do sequels is because each ending doesn’t follow up for a continuing of the story. Yeah, DS3 exists but that game feels more like an apologize letter to the fans after how horrible DS2 was. If you had played DS1, 2, and 3, they feel like they are their own story. The only thing those three games have in common is the whole “link the flame.” The rest feels like is own story. I know each game has multiple endings and one of the endings feels like a continuation like the ending of Bloodborne where the main character becomes an Old One. To be honest, the multiverse that Miyasaki is creating FEELS like a sequel and prequel of each game. Take for example Elden Ring. The Lord of Frenzied Flame feels like the prequel to Dark Souls. The Age of Stars feels like the prequel of Bloodborne. It almost feels like each games are connected. But is just a theory…

    I wouldn’t really say armored core 6 is a sequel, it has nothing to do with previous armored cores, kinda like Demon souls and dark souls.

    While I may soundly disagree with the sentiment that Elden ring was the culmination of all of their previous games (since demons souls, I mean), and while I may not enjoy elden ring overall as much as I enjoyed and continue to enjoy bloodborne, sekiro and dark souls 3 (for reasons that are rational but not relevant at this moment), I absolutely respect Miyazaki's dedication to his craft and his decision not to be bogged down by sequels.
    People need to understand that it was through this singular decision, the decision to stay dedicated to creativity, that fromsoft has set itself apart from the absolute vast majority of developers, period.
    Yes, there are good indie developers making absolute gems. But that's just the thing. They are indie. You can bet your ass that once these indie developers get bought by some billion dollar a year producer, things will change.
    It seems that fromsoft got lucky with the parent company that bought them, though that luck can run dry if Miyazaki isn't careful. For now, it seems the suits above him understand that Miyazaki is a creative genius, and that his name alone is what carries fromsoft at this moment.
    Fromsoft can therefore claim to be the only AAA developer raking in absolute vast amounts of money, on creativity and passion alone. A uniqum. Nobody else is doing that right now. At least not on the scale that fromsoft does.
    Now I'm not delusional enough to think this will last forever, or that miyazaki's genius is endless, or that somehow the industry will learn lessons from this. The only lesson worth learning in any industry, gaming or otherwise, is a lesson in how to make more money and reduce more costs. So long as the stock market controls the entire world with an iron grip through exploitation and military dicatorships we conveniently ignore producing the vast majority of our consumer goods, direct profits will always be the only standard these companies understand.
    Elden ring might have been the jack of all trades of their line-up, stellar at nothing particularly and repeating many of the mistakes dark souls 2 made, and seemingly misunderstanding the quality over quantity rule, while also re-introducing a lack of balancing and favoring ease of access and the "freedom" to make fights trivial with summons and spirit ashes, to deep and satisfying gameplay, but it still leaves the vast majority of other developers in the dust. I'm happy for the company, even if I'm worried Miyazaki was a bit TOO enthusiastic about Elden Ring. That game's glaring faults might bleed over into his other projects. Here's hoping he actually decides not to copy his own homework, and take things into a creatively new direction, rather than sticking to what made them the most money to date.

    I mean, they're on armored core 6 and Dark souls 3 add on the pile of ports remasters and the fact its a spiritual succesor to Demons Souls. Sony owns Demons Souls and Bloodborne, so they'd need the license to make more of those.
    A steady stream of paid Dlc .. I'd say they're pretty into sequels when they can.

    Outside of ER and sekiro most of the games they make utilize the same gameplay loops and mechanics so you can’t really compare them to other devs who heavily change gameplay based on sequel

    • @ItchiestBum
      @ItchiestBum ปีที่แล้ว

      Most sequels don’t heavily change gameplay, while From does with it’s new IP. Hell even Dark Souls feels different from each other, DS1 slow and methodical, DS2 (Janky?? Hard to describe), DS3 much faster gameplay, it’s pretty fair to compare to other devs as most don’t do much for their game’s sequels.
