It's so strange, realizing years ago that picking up a game I've never played would lead me down such a journey that was created by a man who genuinely loves what he does, and puts his heart into it. Every question he has put into a game to make me take a step back and ask myself that same question and apply it to real life experiences has been nothing short of therapeutic, as well as some of the most difficult times I've had to face. It brings me such joy knowing that the person behind the questions and stories is someone I can truly look up to as a human being in general. I'm seriously just proud of him and the journey he has put on himself to create such art and philosophies.
So many people praise mario and mgs but nobody realise what miyazaki has done....he literally save the industry...against all those predator ubisoft ,blizzard and all the developer who is trying to ruin game by being greedy....thank you Miyazaki
Those predators still do more numbers than him and will still largely define the market. He is an inspiration for the part of the industry that is in it to make art tho.
@dondonrv I definitely don't think I'd still be gaming if I didn't discover Dark Souls in 2011.I was growing fatigued with the same old stuff the market was flooded with. There have certainly been some incredible games since then, ala Witcher 3 or the recent Resident Evil games. But nothing holds a candle to Miyazaki. He changed the entire gaming landscape with his work. He literally created his own subgenre.
Dark Souls one always struck me as having moments in the game where I could feel that I was essentially looking at concept art. Firelink shrine The Depts Anor Londo Blight Town Artorias's grave. Over and over I felt that I was looking at a painting only it was simply the game. They really blew me away with how often I felt that the artist's work was somehow captured exactly and transported to his world.
Miyazaki's design philosophy really shows the level of passion and care for the product and all else. He is a true artist compared to most game designers. It wven bleeds into monetization, there isnt any. Elden ring for example. You pay the standard price and get a game more filled than anything else, no microtransactions, nothing. He treats the player with complete trust and that in and of itself is why we trust anything with hos name attached. These videos are of such amazing quality. Thank you for that. Miyazaki-esque, if you will
I think it’s so telling how much he lauds his team & development crew as equals compared to someone like Kojima who slaps his name into every possible area of development & tries to hoard credit. Miyazaki is a true auteur of our time. A creative without ego, doing it for the sake of art & culture
It would be telling if Kojima was a loser… which he is not. Both are genius game designers and have already left a deep impact in their art. The only thing is that one of them may be a better person than the other.
Some people (many? most of them?) make a video on this topic and then move on, but you've made an entire channel as a commitment to these subjects. It's great.
10:18 This quote right here. This is a perfect example of how Miyazaki respects and works on video games as a form of art. Something greater than the whole of its parts that can grow through collaboration.
He is brilliant. What a creative and passionate person. Other game companies need to take notes from this man. This is why fromsoft will always remain on top. Great video, this was amazing to see and has increased my love for from software
They can't 😂 you can't make "genius artist", they're self made. As a company, you're either lucky enough to hire one and buy smart enough to give them creative freedom, or you waste a lot of resources trying to "cook one in a lab" ... And that never works.

Really thoroughly enjoy your videos about Miyazaki and Fromsoftware, love everything he and the teams over the years have done, it's a blessing to get information from the inside on things in a well presented video.

@@dondonrv thank you, too! your content is like a lifeline in a sea of gray. Its inspiring me to revisit my dreams, and you cant put a price on that. Keep it coming. I cant wait for the Elden Ring video.
A creative genius, rare! Sometimes people think this is just a job, and someone has to "fill a position". Here's the exception to that, it's art, and he's a creator... And an excellent one at that.
It speaks volumes about Miyazaki and his design philosophy regrading Sekiro. That was a game that I bounced right off of when it came up due to its different mechanics and brutal difficulty, only to rediscover it last month and absolutely become obsessed with it. The fact he had trust and knew it was also time for his team to experiment with the idea of leading the charge themselves probably has a lot to do with the quality of that title.
The design works interviews are very interesting. I loved going thru them. I have yet to read Elden Ring's but think I will since this reminded me of them. The dark souls 1 interview is particularly funny. Lots of good banter between staff! You can always sense his personality in the interviews. Excellent video!

Yes, I remember watching the video and learning about it. Apparently the 'amazing chest' wasn't meant to be that big, but the artist was so proud of his work that Miyazaki didn't have the heart to tell him to redo it :)
I think the philosophical approach to the shared vision is such an invaluable aspect of these games, their design, and their success. While it aids in world-building, continuity, and creativity, it also brings the team together in a very personal way. What an interesting and inspiring work environment it must be

Actual good developers that cooperate, brainstorm, give good ideas to each other, and is lead by Miyazaki. They’ve been doing this for over decade and every game they’ve made since Demons Souls has just gotten better and better. Here’s to another decade of Fromsoft, developers you can actually trust with your money and time.
It must be a real awesome experience to see his ideas be realized with the aid of the designers and artists. I bet they have to work a lot to meet his standards. But for sure it must be worth it if they are invested in growing in their craft. Lets hope his co directors learn enough to carry his legacy onwards after he retires... a world with no "true" souls games would be a sad place.
Miyazaki-san is an auteur in the truest sense. His artistic approach is one of a kind and his work is inimitable. I also think it’s very telling about his character and what he’s like as a leader when he can be so deeply involved in the creative process and still have the projects turn out so well. Usually when a boss is so involved in the details it becomes a toxic and stressful environment which leads to poor outcomes.
Miyazaki is a genius who has touched the lives of so many people. Just look at how many videos there are about Dark Souls helping with depression. Elegance, and beauty. I like that description. I'd also like to add "weight and meaning" to the list. His games have a gravitas that translates into daily life and make the world seem richer and more mysterious, somehow. Wonderful documentary, thoughtful and enlightening. Thank you.
I am not a very creative person and never have been but I would imagine that if I was a designer working with Miyazaki would be very interesting and much better then most mainstream big game dev studios, prob8much more liberating and would lead to a much more passionate team working together to achieve the same vision, this is just one of the key factors that make their games such a great experience
Miyazaki sounds like an amazing boss, especially with creative freedom. That kind of participation from everyone must instill a great deal of pride in their work.
This was a very good video. You can really see his evolution as a total director. His games really have got better as the money bags have allowed him to cook. It got me thinking that I kind of wish Miyazaki could officially finish Dark Souls or add the archstone world for Demon’s Souls. I know this is something Miyazaki won’t do. It comes back to a critique video of Bluepoint Demon’s Souls that I watched. I was flabbergasted that someone made an hour video on why they preferred the original Demon’s Souls. Seeing the care that Miyazaki takes with Total Direction really cements my view that the original Demon’s Souls is probably better. Especially when I think these games are art. It is like changing the makeup on the Mona de Lisa or changing the color of a Picasso. I have started another playthrough of Dark Souls on Switch. Lost Izalith unfinished area I was always like I wish this area could be finished by Miyazaki. Now I can’t help but think of him acting out the legs of the weird rock leg demons. I also don’t really play modded Souls games. It just kind of changes the thing I fell in love with. Thanks again for the great video.

I know how much work goes into these videos, so I really don't hope you feel like I'm putting any of your work down. Just trying to offer help for next time. To that end, if you ever need help capturing gameplay footage, I am more than happy to help!
My takeaway from this is that Miyazaki, even before becoming FromSoft President, probably has some persuasive skills, considering that he obsessed over the details, and yet be able to deliver games with consistent quality even with the tight schedules. It's very challenging to work in an environment with a boss/game director that exerts such control, and yet he is able to pull it off. Impressive! He'd be an excellent case study for project management workshops imho.
About total direction, if you've ever work on a slightly more ambitious artpiece/project by yourself which took you a long time, you'll know how much distractions you get along the way that might influence how you perceive your own work and ultimately caused you to make changes. Imagine having to work in a huge project like making a video game, with so many people at the helm having their own concepts and making decisions, how easily and quickly the whole thing would become a chaotic mess. A clear and firm direction is very important, even if you learned something along the way that tells you that it might not came out as good or ideal, just incorporate that new knowledge on your next project instead.
I’d love Miyazaki to help design a Batman game. His Gotham would be so epic. DSIII Irythil is one of my favorite areas in a game ever. Every time I get to that part of the game I just see a near perfect Gotham.
Oh my! I haven't finished with your Sekiro and Bloodborne yet and now a new content? Very nice! will be reserving Binge watching this for the weekend with beers and pizza. I mean a TON of BEERS and PIZZA 🤣😂
The best on the planet! Please don’t sleep on Yamamura either tho. Sekiro and AC VI are examples of Yamamura’s influence and direction. Hats off to them and the entire FromSoft team
Father Miyazaki will go down in history on the same level as Robert Jordan or Stephen Hawking. With how much his games have helped those with mental illness and rekindling perseverance in so many people, he deserves a Nobel Peace Prize. ❤
You are very good at explaining and pacing. It isn't easy, GREAT JOB! I wonder if you are trying to experimenting other editing style or editors. Sorry but the background is the only thing i don't appreciate so much (like 7/10 ahah). For example i like the GMTK style, but i would like too see your personal style. But it's your channel, it's up to you, if you like it like that that's ok and anyway i'll be always here watching your (good) work. I'm waiting for the next part of this video.
Western companies don't understand that you need an all-powerful game director with eccentric sensibilities to actually make a good game. Kojima, Shinji Mikami, Miyazaki, etc. are all dictators, artistically, along with every single great film director and philharmonic conductor.
When you play a Miyazaki game and do your deep dives after, you're left reeling at a mind such as his. Then you play Elden Ring and start learning about it (no one seems to really know anything concrete about ER) and you realize that as much depth as Dark Souls has in its story, it pales in comparison. I think this comes from George RR Martin.

The man is a fieldmarshal. A true general.
Legend
Oda and him, have the best world building detail attention
Imagine Miyazaki, Kojima and Yoko Taro making a game together. Would be absolutely bonkers.
I’d love Miyazaki to help design a Batman game. His Gotham would be so epic. DSIII Irythil is one of my favorite areas in a game ever. Every time I get to that part of the game I just see a near perfect Gotham.
I look forward to that as well! We already have a template for a FromSoft story-driven game, Sekiro, so it's not impossible.
I want Miyazaki to get his hands on everything lmao
Haha..same! I want him to do a Diablo game! :)
Imagine his version of Tolkien Lore. Not based on Peter Jackson just his take on the whole lore.
My dream game is a game with Narrative & Visuals by Hideo Kojima but Gameplay & Level Design by Hidetaka Miyazaki. Can you imagine lol
Oh my! I haven't finished with your Sekiro and Bloodborne yet and now a new content? Very nice! will be reserving Binge watching this for the weekend with beers and pizza. I mean a TON of BEERS and PIZZA 🤣😂
Haha..thanks! :)
@@dondonrv well, going back here. I actually bought a TON of BEERS and PIZZA LOL!!!
yay!
A modern day genius
Funny how he got embarrassed when the animators showed him the finished animation he acted out in front of them.
Haha.. yeah! Also the Soul Drain attack he did to Satake..that was hilarious! :)
He even had a invader at the game awards 😭😭
The best on the planet! Please don’t sleep on Yamamura either tho. Sekiro and AC VI are examples of Yamamura’s influence and direction. Hats off to them and the entire FromSoft team
Father Miyazaki will go down in history on the same level as Robert Jordan or Stephen Hawking. With how much his games have helped those with mental illness and rekindling perseverance in so many people, he deserves a Nobel Peace Prize. ❤
Haha.. I hope so! If Bob Dylan can win a Nobel, Miyazaki might too! :)
Well, if a musician can win a Nobel prize of literature, a game designer should qualify for that too imo
Thanks for the feedback! :)
Western companies don't understand that you need an all-powerful game director with eccentric sensibilities to actually make a good game. Kojima, Shinji Mikami, Miyazaki, etc. are all dictators, artistically, along with every single great film director and philharmonic conductor.
Souls games will be forever in our heart ❤️ 🔥❤️🥰
He is the guy who
Hurts me a lot and i like it 😂
Anybody else crying or is it just me?
Yes, hello I'd like to apply for the entry level lead designer position please.
When miyazaki dies the industry is dead. Its the true 😢😢😢
Did Miyazaki just kind of confirm a new game?
The animation segment makes Miyazaki sound like Stanley Kubrick 😆
One more thing. What is the tittle of the music in the end of the video?
Longing from Dark Souls II OST.
The Man of a 1000 poison swamps!😊
Haha..lol :)
If you read ASOIAF, you'll understand that GRRM is a genius among geniuses at least in his specialty.
Greatest game designer ever to live
my only criticism is the menu design and interface. ER and Bloodborne have convoluted overall menu structure. Zelda's latest games are smoother IMO.
It's subjective. I dont love UI in Zelda BotW and TofK.
