      The 5d mark ii introduced the possibility of a new aesthetic (full frame at f1.4 or even 1.2 really wasn't seen anywhere - even on big productions), made it accessible to small crews, basically made vimeo's business model work for a couple of years, and created entire industries that are now occupied by Tilta, SmallRig, Zacuto, Wooden Camera etc. I'm sure if Canon hadn't done it, someone else would have (I mean Nikon beat them to it with the D90, but it just didn't work well). Given what I've seen about it, this camera looks great but just not sure it's in that same category. I think you could make a case that the a7s was pretty important (the low light capability made new things possible and I suspect was the beginning of the move towards Sony on the part of small crew / single shooters). Maybe the c300 as well as the first mid level camera to get interchangeable lenses "right". All three of those cameras changed the way production works and basically changed the culture. Does this camera do that? I suspect it does what it does really well, but there are other options out there (maybe more expensive) that are pretty amazing as well. Myabe I'm missing the importance of open gate. Or maybe it's just a nice feature that represents the next step in camera evolution.

    Best value hybrid on the market currently. And active cooling on a hybrid camera is the way to go!
    BTW, update your camera to the latest firmware. The E stabilization modes have been revamped to correct for the corner wobble at ultrawide focal lengths. There is a standard setting (9% crop) and a high setting (~42% crop), the latter is more for running with the camera but the standard setting already looks phenomenal.

Really cool to see a camera company actually care. That and they update frequently and the updates are always shockingly amazing. Can't wait to see what you do with this camera, Matt. @Matt-fo4gg 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Love all those shots!
    Sigma 28-70 is a great choice for being bit more compact than a traditional 24-70. The Sigma I series is worth checking out too, especially the 45mm F2.8 for a really tiny setup. Also considering the 17 and 90mm options as a mini 3 lens setup.
    I'm also on a big downsizing trend! I'm actually considering swapping from my S5 II to an S9 to get an even more casual/run and gun setup for everyday life (with it's own downsides of course). The IBIS really is the big deal with both of these cameras though, lets you be way more spontaneous since there's less need to rig it or use a gimbal. It was one of the deciding factors vs Sony for me. That and Panasonic don't really hold back features, they seem to pack in as much as possible for the money.
    Also regarding the stabilisation - boost stabilisation you mostly want to leave off unless you're stationary since it tries to replicate a tripod but it fights against natural camera movement/pans in a bad way causing jerky movements.

    • @MattAitia
      @MattAitia  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yeah Panny definitely ain't holding back on features which I love so far. I've been playing around a bit more with the stabilization features, I updated to the 2.0 firmware and it seems to get a bit better with warping but does feel a bit unnatural.

    • @Matt-fo4gg
      @Matt-fo4gg 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@MattAitia Yeah it's really refreshing vs the other companies!
      From what I've tested and also read from other accounts - the warping is more pronounced below say 20mm (just due to how the sensor shifting works) and the more extreme of a wide angle you get the more obvious the corners warping are. How is it looking when you try it handheld at 28mm on your lens? I've had some pretty smooth results on my 28-70 but I definitely spend more time past 35mm.

    • @MattAitia
      @MattAitia  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@Matt-fo4gg I did some more testing yesterday, with the new high e stabilization on firmware 2.0, it crops in quite a bit but you can use it at 16mm. Almost feels like it's on a gimbal

    • @Matt-fo4gg
      @Matt-fo4gg 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@MattAitia That's awesome, I suspect I've not needed e-stabilisation much yet since I've not gone as wide as you have. Good to know it's there as an extra on top of IBIS!
      It really unlocks a lot of shots and locations where discretion/looking less professional is key without a gimbal/rig (much like your shots at the start of this video/on the ride too)

    Great review, thanks, I'm thinking of making a similar move, and this camera is so good for the price. I'm a little concerned about the rolling shutter and the moiré - where I live we're surrounded by pine and larch trees whose needles show up any moiré in a flash and quickly make footage unusable, but I've seen there is an OLPF mod that can cut this if you're prepared to send the camera off (and I think potentially void the warranty). It also slightly reduces the sharpness, which is probably a good thing.

    totally agree on not needing the latest stuff. I always wanted a large 'traditional' cinema camera, like an Alexa Mini, or a Red Dragon/Gemini, or a Venice. Ultimately ended up going with the Sony F55 after CVP's video last year (2 years ago now?) and it's been perfect for me. The camera is 13 years old, and looks incredible, even when the footage is played right next to some of the modern cameras from Sony. It looks a lot like what I get out of my Canon M50. Almost identical, except for the crop. Like you, I'm told I'm supposed to be upgrading to FX3 but keep thinking of other choices. We'll see what I end up getting. The FUJIFILM GFX 100II has the best look overall but is priced as much as two FX3 bodies.

    We never appreciate anything until it's gone--my prediction. But we don't know until we try. It'll be fun to follow your new adventure! I'm not bashing the S5IIX, but it's a hybrid camera, not a cinema camera. Canon put all their effort into creating the best cameras for video only. No client will ever complain about how they look through a C200. None. Why? It isn't a mystery. Again, the camera is designed from the ground up to make people look great on camera. The sensor is optimized for video. The electronics are optimized to give the best look at the lowest bit-rate. (but you want RAW, you can have it). The controls, the power, everything is designed so you spend the most time framing your shots and the least time fussing with menu selections. Except when setting up a mic, when do you need to go into the menu?
    Small cameras are important. You need to have something. Perhaps the S5XII will remain as that camera. But to make a living? Ultimately, people want how they look on a C200 and not a S5XII. Again, not bashing any cameras here. Just speaking for myself. I like how I look better on a C100m2 for example, than my GH6. I'll be curious to see how your experiment goes because you're a super talented filmmaker!

      Yeah according to him, his type of clients don’t care what he shows up with. Your argument is the image, and there isn’t a big enough difference to justify keeping it, so of course downsizing, saving money, and saving himself the friction and headache is a smarter move for him.

      @@BrandonTalbot I believe it's lack of clients/work which has led him to downsize. He'll appeal to YT viewers who love the Panasonic system. He will be welcomed. Appreciated. But... I don't want to say anything else ;)
