It's so funny that you are surprised by his younger age because this is much later in his career and he was about 45 years old for this Infamous performance and tour with Tom Petty in 1986. Tom Petty in turn was highly influenced by Bob Dylan and opened for him. Some say that you can hear the change in Tom Petty's singing delivery after he toured with Bob Dylan. The two of them had incredible chemistry together.
This performances from 1986 but the song actually came out in 1973 and it was in the soundtrack to a movie and the very short and simple lyrics describe a scene in the movie where a frontier lawman dies, if I remember correctly.
Bob Dylan wrote abstract lyrics a lot and is generally considered to be America's poet from that era. In fact he won the Nobel Prize in poetry in 2016. He's still alive and releasing music and now he is in his early 80s.
He really became well-known and famous in the early to mid 1960s when he was quite young. You definitely should check out his early pioneering music video from around 1965 called Subterranean Homesick Blues. He is about 24 I think for that one, and it was a huge hit, and it is to me a form of early rap. I swear to God it looks like he's about 17 years old in that!

Do some research on Dylan. The influence is epic, groundbreaking and still lives on to this day. He broke the mold. I mean beyond, beyond, beyond. Shit. This was an odd performance to use for hearing the song for the first time, but I guess it's the first one you found for this song. Keep on digging into Dylan's repertoire, you'll be glad you did. I would suggest starting with songs from the start of his career: The Times They Are A'Changing, Tambourine Man, Blowin' In the Wind, Don't Think Twice It's Alright, It Ain't Me Babe, Lay Lady Lay, Masters Of War, etc. Then you'll have a basis for the changes to his style that came after.

A lot of people talk about the influence Bob Dylan had over so many artists. But few talk about some of the people on the Folk Scene in the 1960s that influenced Dylan. Two gentlemen he looked up to were Tommy Makem and Liam Clancy who performed Irish folk music both traditional songs as well as their own song writing efforts. Bob Dylan is on record saying that Liam Clancy is the best singer he ever heard. Makem's song "Gentle Annie" and Clancy's version of "The Dutchman" are truly great works.

If you have a few minutes pull Bob up on Wiki and see who we're dealing with hear. Bob Dylan a giant in so MANY ways. Only Bob can be Bob. You will find 100 giants in the land of musicians who will bow down to Bob. He is iconic and fascinating as hell. He is the musician, writer and songwriters legend. That's the word for Dylan..Legendary. He will be 82 soon and many of us are surprised that he survived his reckless life. Some of us...me for example...love him. My children had to hear his sometimes strange singing while in their baby cribs but they are better off for it. So many college courses are taught around Dylan lyrics.....I'll stop now.

You have to hear his love songs - "If Not For You," "To Ramona," "Love Minus Zero," "Tangled Up in Blue," "Lily, Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts," "Buckets of Rain," "Simple Twist of Fate." "Girl from the North Country," "Don't Think Twice," and "Just Like a Woman," just to name my favorite ten. His best love songs are his most beautiful songs.

In 1989, Bob Dylan released a collaborative live album with the Grateful Dead. It included seven covers of Dylan's songs that the Dead performed with Dylan: "Slow Train," "Gotta Serve Somebody," "Joey," "Knockin' on Heaven's Door," "I Want You," "Queen Jane Approximately," and "All Along the Watchtower." It was one of my favorite CDs. Then, in 2004, in Eu Claire Wisconsin, I had an opportunity to see the surviving members of the Grateful Dead in concert. Bob Dylan came out in an all-black rockabilly outfit with a big porkpie hat and played with them for more than an hour. One of my all-time best concert experiences.

Bob Dylan looks younger than you expected because this is an old video. This song was written for the Western movie Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid (1973). Dylan had a small part in the film as well. I can't make out the co-singer with certainty since the video isn't clear, but I think it's Tom Petty, who toured with Dylan circa 1987. Edit: I see the credits identified Petty and the rest of his Heartbreakers band. I think Hurricane should be your next Dylan reaction as it's based on a true story (that was also turned into a movie starring Denzel Washington)

Maybe they were trying to save on mikes 😄 - You oughta see Dylan when he uses a neck brace to play harmonica while playing the guitar. One of the funniest videos is him playing his song, Jokerman, on the David Letterman Show. At the end of the song he does a harmonica solo but immediately realizes that the harmonica he picked up is in the wrong key. Then he spends nearly a minute looking for the right harmonica while his band has to take up the slack.

Growing up in the 60's and 70's Bob Dlyan was the voice of our generation. I always felt his raspy clearly worded voice was a great asset
forcing the listener to think and focus more on the meaning of the well written lyrics rather then the catchy tunes which often came across as part protest, part soothsayer, part mystic lover adapt at capturing prevailing heart felt moods, and always a guiness at songs with strong mood or a powerful message.

Can't remember the exact timeline (I think this was the mid 80's). Bob toured with Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers , so they were basically his backing band. I think they did their own abbreviated set as well though. Tom had to break it off at a certain point to get back to his own career. Dylan loved playing with them though.

Dylan was born Robert Allen Zimmerman on May 24, 1941. His recording career is over 60 years and he is still putting out new albums... and he still tours extensively.
Bob Dylan is a man, not a band... he is the greatest writer ever in the English language... he is in my opinion the greatest singer in the west, because singing is not about pretty voices, but conveying emotions... his impact is incalculable.
The man in the hat is Tom Petty... he and his band, The Heartbreakers backed Dylan for quite a while, as did The Band, The Grateful Dead, etc.
If this is first time you are hearing him, then you have a wild journey ahead of you... this man is a transcendental genius like no one else before... and most likely no one else after.

Dylan wrote this song for a Western movie that he acted in and I think he played the part of Billy the Kid, the outlaw. The song, was meant to convey his speaking to his Mother as he was dying. The other gentleman with the hat is Tom Petty of Tom Petty and the heartbreakers, a fairly famous Rock Band. They appear to performing this song, from Dylan's catalog. Bob Dylan is a Nobel Prize winner and he participates in all sorts of singing his material over the years.

While in Germany in the Army, I saw Dylan with Tom Petty and Roger McGuinn from The Byrds in 1987 in Nuremberg and this was part of the finale... Yes, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Dylan must have wanted the harmony and share the stage with him. This is closing out a concert. Dylan wrote "Blowin in the Wind". A folk trio named Peter, Paul and Mary" performed "Blowin in the Wind" for the Martin Luther King event when Dr. King gave his "I have a dream" speech. Dylan also performed a song at the MLK event. Many of Dylan's concerts were sung with others at the same microphone. I love this tour with Tom Petty in the 80s. This version of Knocking on Heaven's Door is one of my favorites and nice that you included it for your wonderful reaction.
There's many wonderful videos of the Rolling Thunder Revue Tour in the 70s . Bob Dylan sings Idiot Wind, Tangled up in Blue, to suggest just a couple of so many that he wrote that were performed on that great tour. The hats w/fresh flowers, makeup, etc. That tour was gypsy like, with many other musicians touring on it at different times. It was in 2 parts
    Work a look 😊❤
