today was a win (and I won’t let my brain convince me otherwise)

  • I really wanted to challenge myself today and try some thing I’ve been putting off for a little while! It might sound silly, but Trader Joe’s is a place that I’ve been wanting to shop at for so long. The thought of walking in has always intimidated me (because of a random little comment from a stranger like…11 years ago.)
    My goal was to go inside, grab a few things and try new foods today! Ironically, I achieved everything I set out to do. BUT, the way in which it happened made me feel like I had failed at my original goal.
    My brain is a liar and I’m just going to keep moving forward.
    Anyhoops, please enjoy my meatless lunch with (as well all the childhood stories the groceries seemed to remind me of???)
    Just keep hitting singles.
    Love you! ♥

      This is a such a relatable comment, the worst I had my heart beating was one day I had a balmiton class right before a big chemistry exam that I was very anxious about ( for context I started class at 8h00 that morning and the exam lasted 3 hours would ended at 19h (7 pm) and I take ADHD meds and the would no longer be working during the exam so that added to my stress ( you know finals))(and this balminton class from 14h to 16h ) we just started playing at 15h (3pm) and after a match or two I went to the teacher because I was starting to feel like my head a spinning and I looked at my Apple Watch and my heart was beating at like 240.
      (I literally didn’t even move a lot) I got to sit out the rest of that one
      We do be burning the calories tho!

    as a fellow lifelong curly hair haver, you should fully rinse out your normal conditioner - so rinse until your hair feels clean. normal conditioners aren't designed to be left in your hair and can cause build up on your hair and scalp. a leave in conditioner is meant to be applied to your hair and left in until the next time you wash it. they can help your hair feel soft and stay moisturized between washes. apply a leave in conditioner to damp hair before you apply any styling products. finally, a deep conditioning treatment or hair mask should be left in for as long as the instructions say, and then rinsed out completely. if not fully rinsed out, they can leave your hair feeling greasy or limp since they're more concentrated than normal conditoners or leave ins.
    i love talking about curly hair care so i hope this is helpful 💖

    • @BVoshol
      @BVoshol 27 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

      But, if you want to leave in your normal conditioner, there are conditioners that can be used as a standard conditioner and a leave-in. Now, for my super fine hair, that type of conditioner doesn't work well, but they do exist!

    • @marabanara
      @marabanara 25 วันที่ผ่านมา

      If you follow Curly Girl Method (using approved products or ones following the same principles), you absolutely can and often MUST leave some in. The thing is, this method uses much more water. So the left-in product is also leaving in lots of water.

    This is not a story about failing at anything. ❤ Sensory overload is real, especially with neurospicy folks like us. Modifying and adapting for your needs is good self care. If a shorter trip in TJ's is what suited you best at that time, that's actually a successful thing. You just have to look at it through the right lens, you deserve to have your sensory needs met and just because other folks made us think we had to conform to their idea of typical doesn't mean that was true. We get to embrace ourselves and modify as much as we need to now. That's self care, baby. And the shopper and clerk who were giving you ideas and gifting you an item? That's the only way they could think to say "I like you for you. You're awesome!" ❤

I think is a good idea. Make your own little world just with ND families.

    Also, you're writing a book? More details please!

    I feel teary knowing how hard that was, but I also feel SO immensely proud that you went there, you found safe people that cared and helped and you were brave and vulnerable and that is TRUTH. Care as you recover and rest from extending yourself into new places and spaces.

    Peak courage, for those of us in the know.
    That TJ person likely felt just as bad, thinking about the words that came out of her mouth.
    You made it home with new foods to try, and great stories to tell. Bravo!

    The timing of this video couldn't be more perfect. I tried to go to Trader Joe's two days in a row this week with my infant and had a panic attack in the parking lot both times & couldn't even make it to the door (Postpartum anxiety is wild). Thanks for being vulnerable & sharing your experience. It made me feel less alone.❤

    Howdy, Elise! I really dig the longer videos. I've had grocery store anxiety at Whole Foods. Crippling anxiety. Not to mention the multiple-period disasters that I've locked away. I'll have to take them out and dust them off. Anyhoo, Thank you for being here and making me feel normal. I'm a 56-year-old woman, and I love that I can learn so much from you. Years ago a guy coworker asked me if I used to be fat cause lots of people with thick ankles used to be fat! Well I was a chunky baby but weren't we all? Naturally I focused on the thick ankles and not that he didn't consider me fat. And as you see I still remember that comment. Its hard to forget those comments people say without thinking. I totally get your Trader Joe "thing."

      My ankles are huge and have been huge since my mid-teens and I've never been overweight. My mom's ankles are like that too. I'm a small/medium or 2/4/6, but I can't wear any boots. Not even extra wide calf boots. I've brought it up to doctors and apparently nothing's wrong with me that would cause it. I think the moral of this is to be really careful making comments about appearance because you never know what sticks in someone's brain.

    That reminds me of visiting my dad when I was 11 and my period came while there, on a day we were going to the water park and my dad tried to convince me to just get tampons so I could have fun at the water park.. I had never used a tampon, did not want to..and my gawd the anxiety that whole situation gave me! Plus I had to go into the gas station and buy pad.

    The freeze response is so real. I have terrible spatial awareness and always end up running into someone at grocery stores and end up freezing it’s so embarrassing but it’s either that or I dart through crowds when I’m anxious there is no in between with me.
