  • Here is a quick video of me rebuilding a vintage welding mask with leather and kydex. Unconventional tests at the end of the video ;)
    Thanks for watching!
    I own 100% of the audio and visual content in this video. Music created for me by my brother-in-law Trey Harris.

    I've looked/watched a lot of the welding helmet videos on YT... I elect YOURS as the best one here. You kept it simple! Less is usually better. The other thing I like in yours is that you have included a Frankenstein look to it. Job very, very well done ! Thank you. PS... I'm surprised you weren't arrested for tearing around outside wearing it. (LOL)

    I've made plate mail armor out of kydex and ABS plastic. Gotta wear lotsa clothes under that hot plastic and have a couple of pals ready to help keep it smooth. We used a technique coined "raccoon paws" where the people holding the plastic to the form (body) kept their hands constantly moving and smoothing the plastic until it cooled. It's surprisingly easy and much faster and cheaper than working with metal. And it doesn't require a forge, anvil and a LOT of skill... ;-)

    Kool!!! It reminds of Hermon Munster for some reason. The leather apron topped it off. FYI From Amazon you can get auto shade lenses for that size window in the $5.00 range. I usually order 4-5 at a time, not because they quit working , but rather I'm hard on them. Not hard intentionally but accidents happen OK just leave it at that. Huntsman makes a helmet made similar to this one. It's one piece with rivets holding it together.

    Custom job for sure. The copper rivets and leather bottom really go well together. Looks like a helmet a medieval knight might wear. Yeah, the Black Knight! I winced when you came off the bike. Broke my right arm as a kid doing that. Anyway, good work. Be safe.

    As a welder by trade, i can honestly say that this is one of the most badass welding shields i have ever seen, though i would love to find out how the kydex holds up against the glare and radiation from repetitive welding! Not sure id use it for the same uses you did, but hey, i wont judge! Hahahahahahaha.

    What if the heat coming from your welding reaches the point of the Kydex going limp again?

    • @homesteadonomics
      @homesteadonomics  9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      ***** Then it'll be custom molded to the face... lol jk.... But that shouldn't be an issue as the kydex would have to be near the heat source for prolonged periods before getting soft again. The welding will let off some heat but is done in short bursts and the mask is mainly to mitigate pops, arc burns, etc,. Hope that answered your question Joshua... and thanks for watching!

    Are you able to /did you install clear lens inside hood for grinding? Thinking about making one with a sellstrom fill front I have here . Also how thick is the Kydex you used? Thanks

      I’ve got my own Grandfather’s welding helmet and it’s the exact same style, right down to the hole placement on the lower outer jaw edges.
      My Grandad was a boilermaker from 1935 to 1985; he had his own industrial ship repair machine/welding/fab shop from 1948 to 1985 and actively welded until 1975.
      This one has the clear glass under the shaded side ( which is under the flip up portion) just like mine.
      Good luck on your project and stay safe!
      Best Regards,
      Shawn

      @@FIGGY65 Thanks! I did some time with the pipe fitters and the Boilermakers as a welder and fitter. Got to see the country and met some great people. That is quite a keepsake you have there from your grandfather!!

    What was the experience using this refurbished helmet?

    • @homesteadonomics
      @homesteadonomics  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Enclave Soldier Hi ES... It's pretty much the same as any other helmet I've tried on... except that it's a tad bit heavier that some newer ones. You can see it get a lot of use on my 'dual stool' shop stool video. Should be in my more recent videos... just click on the 'videos' tab on my channel page and it should be one of the ones at the top:) Thanks for watching!

    What a homestead, geez I'm envious ! Looks like the place the biggest loser's work out at, no need for you to have a gym membership. Oh and you may want to think about a bigger freezer that one is only three times the size of mine! 😃

      my2cents0 haha... the way I've been eating lately I'm gonna need to do some of their workouts! Actually I'm planning on doing a video on my little trail to... but need to do some trail maintenance first so it actually looks like a trail... which will end up being a pretty good workout too:)

    @homesteadonomics Is that an old jackson? Did it have orginial lens and what type/brand

    • @homesteadonomics
      @homesteadonomics  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Nicholas burgess Actually, I have no idea.. I thru the old frame away. But maybe I'll have to check on the other pieces and see if there are any other marks. But I'm guessing the lens is original to the old mask. I was worried about it and took it to the hardware store and compared the darkness of that one versus the newer ones while looking at the florescent lights in the store. They seemed to be just about the same. But I'm planning on switching it out anyways.
      Thanks for watching:)

    When or if you do weld you would know welding requires high temperatures (2000 to 5000) degrees. I don't think the kydex is a welders best choice. Nice try

    • @homesteadonomics
      @homesteadonomics  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Mike Van yep... you are right, it's not the best material for sure. But it's what I had on hand. The very little welding I do has consisted of tack welds and small projects. So for my purposes it'll be fine... for pro purposes, probably not at all. Thanks for watching:)

    • @marxkartredge
      @marxkartredge 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, considering welding helmets you buy on the shelf are made of ABS plastic and the lenses are made from PP plastic, and the headgear is probably nylon; kydex wasn't a bad choice at all.

    Con recambio de estos, se puede hacer la careta solar poniendo un cristal o vidrio glass ,delante de protección.
    Le quedó muy bien la careta.
