  • Hi Kiddies! Remember, address the Pentastar tick and the Oil Cooler seal leak, and the damn motors are half a million mile bulletproof gems! That's not a guarantee, but it's not based on nothing either.

    Changed all the rockers on a 3.6 in a minivan without removing the cams.
    Loosened one cam at a time.

      The cams aren't the problem. It's the roller on the rocker that wears, seizes, and then galls the cam. If the rocker is good, the cam will NEVER wear out. See my channel for a teardown of a 500,000 mile engine.

      Nothing to do, other than pray to Ba’al and sacrifice a goat. The engine will develop the tick or it wont, all you can do is change the oil like normal. If it starts ticking, keep driving. Once it develops a misfire, then you need to do something. But until then, get your money’s worth.

      Definitely a warranty issue. It’s doable by any mechanic, but it’s not for the faint of heart. Type “motorcity mechanic pentastar rocker” into youtube to see it done before you attempt.

    Do newer Promasters already have the improved rockers (model ending in AH)?

    • @promastersonly1419
      @promastersonly1419  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The AH rockers are a late 2019 thing best I can tell. So for 20's it's probably a crapshoot. But by 21 all the vans would have the AH parts.

  • @MrOlaboss

    My tick is starting, should a local mechanic be able to diagnose? If there is a camshaft noise should we focus on the rollers or are there other parts needed if the cam is still good? Thanks Kip! I am a fan

    • @promastersonly1419
      @promastersonly1419  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Easiest way is to cut open a well used oil filter. If you find metal, you pretty conclusively have the tick. If you dont find any, but still have a ticking sound, it's likely a lifter and not a rocker, and I feel that's safe to ignore mostly. Tick usually comes on around 110k miles.

    • @MrOlaboss
      @MrOlaboss 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Appreciate your reply! Unfortunately, we just did service and didn’t check the filter. We drive very little every year. The van has about 130,000 miles now. We have decided to repair whatever breaks since we have put so much time into converting it into a camper van.

    • @promastersonly1419
      @promastersonly1419  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@MrOlaboss The thing to know is that the tick is a long term issue. Noise aside, you've probably got 20k miles between the time when it first starts misfiring and when it's undriveable because it's misfiring. So you can wait till it's convenient to address it. If you are looking to "bulletproof" the engine, I'd recommend replacing all the rockers but not the lifters, and while you are there go ahead and upgrade to the Dorman 926-959 aluminum oil cooler. It makes sense to do both at the same time. With those two issues upgraded, you'll pretty much never have to worry about the basic engine except for oil changes every 5-10k, trans fluid and filter every 50k, and plugs every 100k.

    • @promastersonly1419
      @promastersonly1419  หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Mobz77 The lifters are testable; just squeeze them and if they are springy replace them. Lifters can fail/wear out but when they do you get the ticking sound but no other issue. My feeling is it's fine to keep using them if they test good. We charge $11 each and you have 24 of them, so it's not a fortune but it is a savings.

    • @promastersonly1419
      @promastersonly1419  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I like to do all 24 rockers at once, but I see the case for only doing them on one bank. The cams are either gouged or they are not, and if not there is no need to replace them. There's 24 lifters too which we inspect, but so far have never needed to replace one.

      The rocker arms are a drastically bigger job than the oil cooler seals, though they share having to remove the upper intake. At only 10k, you are cheating yourself out of pretty much 100,000 miles before you can expect the rockers to go bad, if they go bad - not all do. So I would definitley wait on the rockers.

      @@michaelkoppenhoefer5910 Ah. I think the advice still stands, but I can give you a tip. Next oil change, cut open your old oil filter. A very small amount of glitter is normal, but if your rockers are bad it will be obvious by the amount of metal in the pleats.
