    If Part One is any indication, this will easily be the best Nerdy Gurdy Build video out there. Clear, concise, and outstanding presentation and narration. Just so happens, I'm building mine at the moment also, but just a wee bit ahead, having already applied the finish and completed the key assembly. Very smart move leaving the remaining side-piece opened for the wheel placement, it helped me immensely. LOL, wish I had thought of using tape along with the clamps to secure the side pieces, there were a few spots between the clamps that took some extra effort to get them to cooperate.

      Ooh that's so nice of you to say, thanks a lot! 🤗 I had been searching for NG build videos, but I couldn't find much. Besides for fun and me liking to document things, I wanted to make this video to give people an insight in the steps of the build, because it seemed so daunting to me before I started. The tape was a bit of an emergency-aid, because I only had one clamp. So I did the sides in small sections. Now off to choosing colors! 😁

    Neat to see an earlier version of the Nerdy Gurdy, and all of the changes to the current version that I'm building. More 3D-printed parts and a different design for the head are the most obvious differences.

    Hello, fellow Dutchy, violinist and hurdy gurdyist here!
    Als je serieus bezig wil gaan met draailier spelen (en dat kan ik me goed voorstellen, het is zeer verslavend) is er een stichting in Zeist waar je maandelijkse lessencursussen kan volgen. Het heet Stichting Draailier en Doedelzak, en ze bieden eventueel ook huurinstrumenten aan (wel met wachtlijst, wie had gedacht dat het zo in zwang zou zijn?). Ze geven ook beginnerscursussen en workshopweekenden, samenspelgroepen (waar je als violist ook bij kan spelen), en ze zijn ook vaak te vinden op Castlefest etc.

    • @MarijkeViolin
      @MarijkeViolin  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bedankt! Ik ben die stichting al eens tegengekomen op Facebook. Zodra ik 'm af heb haal ik een lesboek en begin ik eerst zelf (ik ben erg van het methodisch en op noten leren), en als ik de smaak te pakken krijg, wil ik zeker eens met zo'n beginnerscursus meedoen. 🙂 Zeist is voor mij een uur rijden, dus dat is wel te doen.

    • @MarijkeViolin
      @MarijkeViolin  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Haha, I totally get that! I thought the song was very fitting, I love it when a hurdy gurdy is combined with rock or metal music. The medieval tunes are nice too, but it's the heavy stuff that got me excited for the gurdy. 😁 And I'm also very curious for the sound, but I'm not expecting too much. 😅

    Hi Marijke - Great video! BTW: It's too bad the mandolin wasn't to your liking. I thought you might have liked it since it is, after all, tuned to the exact same strings as the violin. I think you gave up too soon. Even though the mandolin is a chromatic instrument, you might’ve found it easier to play if you had just stuck to perhaps to one or two keys such as the key of G and the key of D when playing the mandolin. That's what I did. I only play the mandolin in the keys of C, G, D, F and Bb to keep the mandolin manageable and enjoyable for me. 👍 😊

    • @MarijkeViolin
      @MarijkeViolin  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the tip! I even followed some video tutorials and learned to play a tune or two, but in the end I simply didn't like the instrument enough and I wasn't excited about playing. And pressing the strings was a bit painful on my fingers.

    • @valeaves
      @valeaves 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MarijkeViolin Same. I, too, bought a mandolin because it‘s got the same tuning as the violin. But it‘s much harder to play. The ukulele is much more convenient and it was no problem at all that it has a different tuning.

    • @christophertsiliacos8958
      @christophertsiliacos8958 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MarijkeViolin I can relate to that. 👍 For example, one of my favorite instruments to play is the alto saxophone (along with the violin of course), but my least favorite instrument to play is the soprano saxophone, even though it has the same fingering chart as the alto saxophone. I wish I had rented a soprano saxophone first to see if I would like it or not before purchasing one. But what's done is done. On the other hand, I'll admit, Kenny G does play a mean soprano sax. Happy fiddling. 🎻 ♫ 😊

      @@christophertsiliacos8958 Good to hear. I'm also on the alto saxophone. I practise the sax straight after the violin. It makes for a nice finish to session as it feels good to blow the air out of the lungs, and to play along with some learning CD's.

    I read the description of the video. I would not paint the instruments. I would use a colored varnish. Usually, instruments that have paint instead of varnish sound bad.

    Say you had never played the hurdygurdy or even the violin. Would you have started by making your own instrument? Because of the $$ savings? Seems like a lot of work and then maybe the average person fails at learning how to play well and it's all down the drain with a huge amount of frustration. I made a chromatic dulcimer from a kit and I never play it because it's sort of a completely different kind of dulcimer than my other ones. That was a hard and sad "experiment".
