    I love water god style since they teach taunt lessons. They literally taught students how to trashtalk so the opponent would attack them 🤣🤣🤣. Also a mage that is a water god style user is OP af, using magic as range offense and using water god style when the target gets close to u. U have to get close to a mage in order to defeat them and water god style invites attack to counterattack. OP combo🤣🤣🤣

    • @alzef1375
      @alzef1375 2 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Magic goes through the body, so a mage like that would need to free a hand or have extra appendages to actually use magic while holding the sword properly to be ready to parry at all times.

      No, no. Magic goes through the body. It physically flows through it. A mage must have a limb to "discharge" spells from. Staves act as a conduit because of the materials they are made of (and wands). A sword wouldn't have this ability.
      The safest bet for a magic knight fighting style would be a North God style. As it would allow the mage to fight with one hand while they empty spells on their targets. Though I reckon such a specific fighting style would be better off with more than one sword style to incorporate.

    The cool thing about Mushoku Tensei's sword styles is that it makes you genuinely believe that they are usable in a world with magic. Too often in a fantasy setting magic would just be godlike and would outclass everything, making fantasy weapons like swords completely and utterly useless. But the way both the sword and magic system is set up in this world clearly shows how each method of combat is useful in its own way. Magic with devastating firepower as long as you have the space and enough preparation time, and the sword catching the opponent offguard when close with its sheer speed and brute force.

    • @jackerrocker2235

      The thing is they only have sword as a weapon cuz of healing magic can heal any fetal wound so the one hit kill from Sword god list to be number one. Funny enough that after Rudeus Era, it will end the dominant of Sword style and begin the Era of magic user.

    Man, North God style is so diverse its divided in multiple factions like 5 or 4 in which I call : Original North God Style which is focused on combat and there isnt much trickery in there or dirty tricks (Kalman 3 and 1), Atofe-style a style in which you just learn combat basically pure battle experience(like Atofe, Ruijerd, Gallus), then there is the semi-whacky faction, which is just using another weapon and fighting a bit dirty some not all (Kalman 2, Doga), then there is the true whacky faction which is what makes North God style creative imo which is using all of those dirty tricks, items, ninja stuff ( Auber). Skilled North users seem to learn at least 2 factions. Althought a bad side of North god style is that its users dont seem be that good a using the sword(I dont mean techniques) compared to other schools who master it like the Sword God school system in which it's a requirement to reach king rank.

      They dont particularly place meaning in being the "best" at swordsmanship. Their style is purely about victory and survival. Sword God practitioners will put their all into a strike that while certain to kill their opponent would also end with their own death. North God Style practitioners avoid that kind of death-wish type of combat on principle. Its a strength but also a weakness of the North God style as a fanatical Sword God army will suicide rush them. North God users focus on controlling the flow of battle to their advantage through terrain, traps, etc. Mutually assured destruction is not an option for them. If they dont feel they will survive then they will retreat until they can set up for another attack or ambush.

    A note about sword god style progression through the ranks said by ghislaine in the novel, to reach advanced rank, the practicioner can use touki but subsconciously, once its able to master it and control it at will, its given the saint rank, once you are saint rank you are taught the Longsword of Light and start perfectioning, once it reaches certain characteristics, you can be given the King rank and then even further Emperor and God rank if its able to beat the current Sword God, and by Ghislaine words, to reach further than Saint rank, you cant rely solely in instincts, you need to a foundation based on logic, every action follows a purpose and you must understand it, thats when you can reach King rank
    Edit 1: the sword god posseses some magical/cursed blades, but there exist 42 in total and are spread through the world, the small sword that Eris uses and got in the Demon Continent is one of such, hers has the property of not dulling its blade even if its soaked in blood and guts, making it easy to maintain
    Edit 2: It's confirmed that a way to advance in ranks is to beat someone of that rank, specially for whoever aiming for the God rank in any of the sword schools, as that is the easiest way to prove you are the best in said style

    • @Mezoflation
      @Mezoflation 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@pgf2940 hmm, too lazy to scan through the whole novel for exact word. But, you can check back volume 13 when Water God with Water King visit Holy Land of Sword. (I will drop the name to make it less spoiler-ish)
      "This place that was presently the headquarters of the Sword God Style had seen for a time the
      prominence of the Water God Style. It was only 100 years ago. The Water God of a certain generation
      had dueled the Sword God and taken this land from him. That Water God himself had been defeated
      by another Sword God and the Holy Land returned to the hands of the Sword God Style."
      ^ Water God will never strike first and Sword God strongest technique is Longsword of Light which they will definitely use, still they are defeated by Water God before.
      "As one of the heads of the Three Great Sword
      Styles, the 『Water God』, even in her old age she boasted the same strength that she did in her prime.
      However, only this man's sword was unblockable for her.
      For this man was the Sword God,.."
      ^ Quote from current Water God that she can defeat any rank Sword God practitioner (Ghislaine included), except the current Sword God just because he is simply more powerful and/or faster than her reaction time.
      'In the end, a savage style with only speed and power like the Sword God Style can never break
      through the techniques of the refined Water God Style.'
      ^ quote from Water King on beating Sword Saint user. We all know Sword God Saint should be able to use Longsword of Light.
      Hence, the question of if Water God style can block Longsword of Light, yes it can. Sword God user will keep on work on polishing their Longsword of Light to make it faster and more powerful, while Water God user will keep working on improving the ability to read the opponent attack and reaction time to block/counter the incoming attack. Thus, in the situation if both user speed and power are same, Water God will parry Sword God technique (in general case).

    Mushoku Tensei was always a gamble to adapt as it was in many ways the innovator of the Isekai Genre. Many conventions found in it can be traced back to this work. Years after so many great series inspired by this one have come out, there was a fear that Mushoku Tensei would be seen as quaint and outdated. However like so many founding works of a genre, there is a reason why it inspired to many others. The world building is rock solid and the characters often given enough time to be better fleshed out than their clichés or archetypes. The anime crew also did a great job at adapting the light novel for a visual medium as the the mangaka.

  • @XThexReaperX
    @XThexReaperX ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Mushoku Tensei basically goes "why should I add an additional energy source like ki/chi to my setting when I can just have mana/magic do it instead?". This is one of the reasons I like the setting, so someone who should be a squishy mage can turn around and be the tankiest of tanks so long as they train their mana reserves long enough. So long as they actually stop and get trained in one of the sword styles decently enough to utilize touki.

    • @saiyanfang1047

    Sword God: Blue-Eyes OTK beatdown.
    Water God: Aromages that JUST WON'T DIE!
    North God: Harpies that won't let you play TwT.
    I also think these are fitting because Harpies break the field of Aromages, who need it to stay alive for so long; Aromages resist Blue-Eyes relentless attacks; Blue-Eyes rely mostly on their powerful monsters so Harpies can't properly disrupt them.

    In case you are interested in the realism of these sword styles:
    While no real-life equivalent exists for any of these styles, the principles do appear in various martial arts with some more focused on one of the principles of these three fictional styles.
    Asian swordplay as we know it today is mostly about striking first and avoiding sword on sword contact. European sword fighting is based a lot on seeking the bind (letting swords collide and then going for weaponized wrestling). This is however a gross oversimplification and there’s a lot to elaborate on.
    Firstly, in any country where armor was worn, wrestling becomes an essential part of combat arts.
    Japanese swords tend to be harder and sharper than European ones, but that comes at a great cost: they chip much faster and become bent. That’s a huge reason why sword on sword action is avoided as much as possible. I feel compelled to point out though that early European swords had the same issues and that’s why shields were so important (besides the fact that armor wasn’t as developed). Later swords were made of spring steel, which resists bending much more as it tends to spring back into shape. This also allowed for thinner blades and keener points. Around the 16th century Europeans were able to make swords that could keep up with damascene and folded steel, as the Japanese used. However, as in any country, sword quality varied a lot with time and place…
    A not so obvious advantage of seeking the bind is that you can react much faster to things that you feel than things you can see. How the pressure between the swords changes tells you how it will move long before you can see it moving! Working from the bind also restricts both opponents’ potential movements, so that the more experienced fighter gets a significant advantage compared to both sides being ready to strike. I don’t know any examples in European martial arts for this being applied to empty hands, but Wing Tsun and Silat are prime examples for it, whereas I don’t know any Asian art that uses it with blades.
    The advantage of working from the bind is so huge that an amateur European fencer can score against a master of Asian sword fighting in maybe 10% of the matches, whereas without it, he'd win only 1% of them (by simply hitting first; see the next point).
    A huge problem of striking first is that you might succeed but receive an after blow, or that your strike kills the opponent only after he killed you. For instance, there are multiple accounts of soldiers being impaled by the enemy’s sword and still manage to cut down their own killer… You simply don’t want to rush in Leroy-Jenkins-style. You try to avoid stepping into the blender, but try to move around it or seek an opening. Amateurs are often feared by seasoned fighters because of their suicidal recklessness, which can easily injure the more experienced fighter.
    Getting the sword strike in, past the enemy’s defenses is not just about speed. For instance, Indian arts are known for deceptive footwork. This means that you stay outside the enemy’s range so that he has to step in to hit you and while he steps, you already start your counter and intercept his attack. Besides judging time and range, the challenge lies in getting a superior position from which you can strike, but the enemy has fewer chances of landing a good hit on you. You can imagine it like a boxer with his right foot upfront that you get to his right side, as it would be easier for him to turn to his left side. Similarly, If you got a short blade and are in range, you can hit much harder than someone with a longer blade from the same distance (he would have to back up or make an ineffective strike).
    European styles are often known for feints too. However, feints don’t work, if you don’t strike, but the enemy does… To make a feint work, you need to know the opponent’s behaviour. For instance, if someone keeps bending his head back when you try to land a haymaker, you can fake one and do a cross instead. If he is already dodging, all he can do is bend back more in order to prevent the hit, but this would result in him falling backward…
    An important aspect of this is the flow of combat. If you commit to every strike to do it with full force and speed, you’ll tire out in under a minute! If someone is very agile and defensive, he can bait you into exhausting yourself and then come in for his own attack… Thus, mostly defense is fully committed, but attacks are not. So, you might do some half-hearted attacks to which your enemy must respond and deal with his attacks. This is likely to quickly develop a rhythm, but either side can break it by striking a bit faster. A big aspect of it is rather than to strike-parry-strike, you suddenly counter/crosscut (instead of parrying, you attack in a way that doesn’t put you at risk). This again requires good footwork and understanding of ranges and timing.
    There are two sneaky ways to bait the opponent. For one, you can sneak out of his range so that he has to lean more into his attack and essentially overcommit. If he does this, he will need a short moment to regain his balance. If he doesn’t, this means that he has to make other adjustments, like half a step forward. This again delays his attack. If you already expect it, you can be prepared to step in and cut him, before he can do much about it.
    Side-note: this is a huge issue with bare-knuckle boxing as well. Each strike has a very narrow range in which it can be performed and if the range or angle is off, you might be tempted to change the angle of the wrist and thus damage it on impact, or you expect to hit him on the temple and your knuckle hits his forehead instead…
    The other sneaky thing is to fake exhaustion, or become sloppy with your guard. It is very hard to counter a random attack in time, but if the rhythm is already established and you create an opening for the enemy and you know him well enough on how he wants to exploit it, you have much better chances of countering his attack.
    PS: I'm definitely not a sword saint...

    • @leonard9624
      @leonard9624 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lol, if japanese swords arent harder, hence why they chipped more easily and bent. Also japanese swords doesnt use damascus steel. I stopped reading from there on lol.

    • @edi9892
      @edi9892 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@leonard9624 You misunderstood me. I said _compete with damascus OR folded steel._
      The other point was admittedly even easier to misunderstand. Swords were traditionally made of different steels with different hardness, or differentially hardened. For instance, the crossguard and back of a saber, or Katana are usually significantly softer than the edge. However, the edge of a Katana was often harder than the edge of a European sword. There are definitely exceptions to this, but there is a trend.
      Just in case, I want to clarify another thing:
      hardness has nothing to do with chipping on its own, nor with sharpness. You could make a piece of wax razor-sharp, but it would not be able to shave hair. Glass can be harder than steel, but is more fragile.
      Katana bend easier in the sense that if they get deformed, they stay that way, as their steel has little elasticity. However, to combat this, they made them quite thick, thus they don't bend that easily, but you can see it still at the tip, which has a habit of rolling.
      Renaissance and early modern steel had a higher purity and achieved better elasticity and resilience to chipping. Whereas Japanese steel made little improvements during the same time period.
      I don't say this to diss the Japanese. For instance, the Japanese were incredibly fast at catching up to the Europeans once they noticed their weakness. They even produced in a short time span more muskets than were ever produced in all of Europe.
