I'm trying to figure out what type of generator to buy first. We are buying a home soon and I want to have something to fall back on in case of power loss. I've seen some good videos on propane generators, solar, etc. So far it seems that gas (or diesel) would be best for home use, to power some of the larger appliances. As you said, I want to be able to save money and have a reliable backup energy source. I am less worried about the upfront cost as I am the cost over time, fuel storage, etc. Thoughts?
*A quiet **Generater.Systems** , love the dual fuel capabilities, camper is 50 amp but the adapter helps and found it still handles the load. Haven't taken a camping trip yet, that's in a couple of weeks. Will see how well it does over a long weekend.*
Thank you, Doug. This is a very good video for current day situation in 2022. I have a back-up generator since before hurricane Sandy, and yes it is very loud. A friend of mine had a generator, which was also loud, and at some point lost power yet they could still hear the motor running loudly. When they went out to check out it, they found that someone had taken the generator and put an old lawnmower in its place to fool them by its sound. People!!! I imagine when the grid goes down, all those who are not prepared are going to be running crazy, looting and stealing. I've been searching through your videos to learn about how I can become off-grid while living in my current home. I'm doing my best and I thank you and appreciate you. You and Stacy are the best!!! God bless you both!!!
I ran everything I needed in my house with my Honda EU3000 for 5 days straight after an ice storm. That was in 2002. It still runs like new. I added the Hayes wireless start about 10 years ago which made it even cooler. Be sure and use stabilizer in the gas for it and you’ll likely never have any problems. (I let mine sit too long with gas in it and had to have it cleaned once). Best piece of equipment I’ve ever owned.
FYI, Home Depot has Ethanol-Free Fuel for $20 a gallon. Its expensive but the shelf life is substantially longer & is great for the occasionally used generator/weed eater/snowblower etc.
I know my comment has nothing to do with a generator but nonetheless I'm sharing my excitement. For the first time I've canned 6 pints of homemade salsa with tomatoes from my garden. 6 jelly sized jars of fresh blueberries with no sugar. This wkend I'm going to make and can veggie juice, again tomatoes and carrots from my garden. Right now I'm dehydrating fresh basil from my garden and drying rose of Sharon petals for tea. Wow. Loving this lifestyle. It's not a lot but actually huge for me. I just wrote out garden notes to improve next year's crop and set goals to expand my garden.
Buy once, cry once!!! Cody swears by Honda generators too! So, you can't beat the best recommendations from Doug and Wranglerstar!!! I LOVE those chairs!!! Excellent video! TY
Doug and Stacy, we have a wonderful solar generator which came with solar panel. We bought an extra one to charge it even faster. There is a handcrank for charging as well incase there is no sun. And you can plug it in to charge as well if you have power. This is completely quiet and you can run it in your house. It powers fridges and freezers but not a whole house type. We absolutely love it. It has a lithium battery and looses virtually nothing sitting unused until needed. There are all sorts of plugins for all types of devices. We have been preppers for 20 years, so we have found some amazing things like this.
Hi! It was a long time ago that we got ours and I don't really remember all those details. But there ard a lot of them out there which are really good! You just want to make sure the battery is lithium. The Patriot Power Generator 1800 is really good and highly rated and recommended. Sold by 4 Patriots.
Doug & Stacy... we watched this video a while back. We found it very informative. Now that we are in the market for a generator, we remembered it and watched again! Thank you for the recommendation!
I've worked on a ton of generators in my 30+ years in outdoor power equipment, and Honda is about the best. VERY hard to disassemble and reassemble, but worth it.
I've used Honda generators for a long time. Love em. Also like their motorcycle, and cars. Grew up on their 3wheelers. Drain the oil and put sugar in the gas, still runs for a hundred miles. Lol. Good video. Keep em coming.
I thought initially in the notification that its a commercial I have been looking in the last 2 days for generators. Your video came in the perfect time
Everybody that lives off grid via solar. Wind, and water energy or all of the above should have 2 of these generators along with these. I can see this being the future for anybody who wants to live off grid.
Another option: We live in Colorado Mountains and been through a few generators to include a EU2000, What we use currently for the past few years is a used Kawasaki ninja 250r fuel injected bike we picked up for a few hundred and a 8kw DC electric motor. We have ours wired up to our battery bank through a 2nd solar charge controller. When we need to top the batteries off or run it for a few days, we start the bike up, put it in gear based on the load we plan to draw (usually 6th), then we use a throttle lock to lock the rpms to the target voltage we want. The dc motor sits up around 96v locking the rpms at 1500. The charge controller takes the higher voltage and converts it to 48v for our batteries and invertor. The nice true sinewave invertor is what we use to power everything in the house instead of trusting a generator. We had lots of issues with voltage regulators and electronics failing from generators, so running it through our high quality invertor allows for peace of mind. Our honda eu2000 ran our refrigerator for a few days years ago and killed it after a few days... The motorcycle is water cooled, so we have a box fan that sits in front of the bike and blows air into the radiator when we run it, the entire setup is inside of a small generator shed, surprisingly the motorcycle engine is more efficient at supplying power than the small EU2000 we have. The fuel injection system just sips on gas at low rpms running the setup.. We have roughly 2200 hours on the motorcycle motor since installing the hour meter, so we recently picked up a spare used engine from a local motorcycle salvage yard for $80
I have a EU 3000 and it is really awesome. It"s really quiet and has enough power to run some big stuff. The big gas tank was a big plus for me. Pretty much everything you said.
FYI I just serviced my eu2000 and discovered that if you need to clean the float bowl, there is a screw/value that you can open up and it drains out a hose to the bottom of the machine. Nice, if you need to drain the carb bowl.
We live off grid in South Africa. We do not have a generator but will soon have to invest in one. When rain comes down (always welcome) the sun hides away .... Even if you are ultra conservative with your electricity usage the time will come when you really wish you had a generator. We have just come through a week of rain and by day three had run out, really wished we had a generator .....
Thank you for sharing. Yes Honda is great. We had one back in the 80's but they were not that quiet lol. It worked great even though it was loud back then and it came in handy when had some big snow storms in the early 80's so it came in handy. Have a wonderful day.
Great information Doug. Thanks. I’ll be checking them out and saving some money back to get one for next year along with a really long extension cord. Great info. Thanks.
Was on holidays by the sea in Ireland and there was a Adirondack chair at the glamping site never seen one. Bought a book about the chair yesterday and today you have one in the background of the video. Would make a great project to build one for the channel.
i bit the bullet and bought a couple of gen sets. they are only for back up as I am on the grid. That said the little one is similar to your 2000 I got it to go work up on the new place on the mountain. Saw no reason to put a power drop in till I actually had other equipment out there doing ground work like septic and foundations
Yes we thought we were good before last year when 2 hurricanes knocked the power out for a couple weeks. Our nice big John Deere Generator Cranked right up but wouldn't produce power, a little circuit board was bad and they want almost the price of the generator for it. We lost several freezers full of meat and vegetables. We are canning more and freezing less and when we can afford to we will definitely take your advice. I only need a couple more pieces to build my solar generator as well.
I will, It is just a small solar system. I have 2 big trolling batteries a 4000 watt invert er and a charge controller. I am looking now for the best prices on 2 good solar panels. I will then build it all on a cart that I can roll out and fold open the panels. Those batteries and invert er were the only power we had last year with a little solar battery charger
I always check my oil on every pice of machinery before I run it. It just takes a second.. I have EU 2000 and the EU companion. They are great. Never had any problems with them. I have done maintenance on both already about 40$ each filters spark plug, oil and have replaced pull cables. If you hook the two together I can get 4000 Watts. I love these and have been life savers at times. The cost of these are totally worth it. There are times you spend the money up front and lasts longer. A good generator behind all solar set ups. Two investments. The question is how often do you turn it on. LOL. Great video. Have a great day Doug..!!
I lost a freezer full of food once. After figuring out how much money was lost I immediately bought a generator.... it was actually less money than replacing the food.
Hello from TN! Great video! Prayers for everyone in the Hawaiian Islands! We are planning to get a generator soon! Bee blessed Danny and Rita in TN on Rooster Ridge
Many who live in Missouri may remember the huge ice storm several years back I know Kennett Missouri was out of power for 16 days that would have been handy
Build a simple generator shack with baffled air inlet and output so you can't hear it at all. You can dig it in the ground which will greatly reduce sound. Use heavy gauge extension cord or else the resistance will exceed your cord!!! 10 gauge or bigger.
Thank you Doug, That was very informative . I don't own a generator but i'm going to need one soon for my homestead. We always appreciate a good nugget.
excellent Video my friend. Your a natural. Totally agree about the price point. . 3 generators later its bigger cost. Got the 2000 watt Honda and its been great. I bought the 7000 watt Honda amazing its almost as quiet as the 2000 watt. Great video.
I have the EU6500is, it's fantastic. I bought it as a backup generator for our house, sold the house and now using it to build our cabin. The only time it wouldn't start is when I forgot the key!
I have a really loud one, and it is super loud. But it works and I don't use it very often. However, when its time for a new one. Honda is going to be on the list.
So happy you did this video. I have been wanting to buy a generator for a few years now and just didn't know what to look for from them. My neighbor bought one from a farm store 2 yrs ago and only used it only about 5x and it is junk now. I've heard good things about Honda generators a few times .
I purchased a Harbor freight 3500 inverter generator. Looks a lot like the Honda EU3000 you have. the price was $700 with low oil shut off and is as quiet as my father in-laws Honda 2000. I've had it for 6 months use it all the time and love it. Just something to keep in mind if your geneators dies.
If you live in town or close to the road make sure you have a way to lock the generator to something so it doesn’t disappear while it’s running during a power outage. That’s an upside to batteries and solar is no noise to call attention to sticky fingers wondering around during a power outage
I’ve heard you can also but your generator in a box built with sound proofing and insulation also helps keep it warmer in the dead of winter just have to have vents for air intake and exhaust
A friend of mine told me decades ago, "Why are you going to spend money on junk when you will eventually will buy something of quality?" "All off the money you spent on the junk is wasted when it could have been used toward quality." Decades later.....it holds true. Although you don't "see" it until you "see" it. Honda is the best. Period.
Thanks for the nuggets on the generators. Back in 2009 we had an ice storm here in West. Kentucky, it was awful. I lived in town and we were w/o power almost a week but friends who lived in the County were w/o power over a month. A generator would have helped in this situation. Thank you for sharing your knowledge its much appreciated.
Hi Doug and Stacy just to let you know I love your video's. I find them very interesting and entertaining. Some of the content would not apply to me but are still very informative. Keep up the good work all the best . Reg Shannon In Dublin ireland
The eco mode runs lower rpm until there is a draw that requires more so it saves gas as well as quite. Regular mode just runs wide open so it is always ready for a full load.
Ps. My honda 2000's where giving me around 10k to 12k hours before the rings where sticking to the piston amd failing. But thats years os use. We use ours every day
Greetings from off grid Oregon. One thing for sure is Honda is by far the best investment when it comes to generators. So as you said " BEHIND EVERY GOOD MAN IS A WOMAN and BEHIND EVERY GOOD SOLAR SYSTEM IS A GENERATOR! I would also add behind the generator that is behind the solar system is another generator unless it is a Honda lol. Our back up generator to our solar system is a Yanmar Military diesel. Our fuel bill for the whole year is about $30. If I have to replace it I would definitely consider the EU3000is. I know a guy in Alaska that has 10,000 hours on his. That is better than the rating on my Yanmar! The big difference for me is the fuel economy. I get up to eight hour from a gallon of off road diesel. The only time we use the generator is to bulk the battery bank when we have days without end with no sun. After all with 100 inches of rain and five feet of snow solar power is a challenge here in the Pacific North Wet!
It's a work horse and just a fyi I didnt show the pull cord back up that started it with a few extra pulls because of the cold 🤠👍 and use our Amazon link wink wink it's under the video in the description
Hey Doug and Stacy 😊 That was some great information. Thanks we have the little Honda generator we saving for a bigger generator .. we use it all the time . Thanks Doug As always love you’ll videos . Blessing 👩🌾
Off grid does not mean "without power." I think that's something that confuses a few folks. I looked into getting a gennie for my house after hurricane Hermine. I could keep it in my garage if I used a double walled exhaust hose through the wall to the outside and got it inspected. Folks need to check with their ordinacne boards first. Other than that, I'd have moved it to the back porch foe use.
We love the Hondas as well. We decided to have two of the 2000 models that we can connect together for a total of 4000 should we need it. The second one has a 30 amp plug so we can plug in our RV when they're both connected.
If you have a house with few electrical needs, 3K will do the job. If, however, you have an average American household with a myriad of electrical needs, you would need 16K or higher if you want a whole house generator. You would need about a 5500W generator to run things like a water heater or well pump.I wish my house had few electrical needs. Good video Doug, that Honda 3000 is a good generator.
The Predator 3500 inverter is a great affordable option for those who can't afford the Honda generator. Surprisingly quiet and people are getting long life out of them with little to no issues.
I have both of these as well as a Kubota diesel. For compact generators, I agree, the Honda’s are the best for reliability, quietest and performance. The Yamaha’s are also good. But the big box store Chinese generators are junk, pretty much disposable
My wife & I will be purchasing land in the interior Pacific Northwest to set up a homestead. We are going solar with lithium batteries. A lithium battery bank is expensive but is a game changer & will pay off in the long run. This sized battery bank should takecare of our needs, but I will still have some generators for backup & portability for construction projects. PS, I always seem to get a chuckle or two from your videos. Your honesty/sincerity shine through which in my eyes gives you credibility. God Bless & Sláinte Mhaith
I'm not knocking Hondas because all of their products are excellent, but i couldn't bring myself to pay what they're asking. I have a Honeywell 5500 that i paid $700 for new. love this thing, but i do have a wood pile that is for noise containment. you definitely can't beat a Honda for their quietness.
Hey Doug :-D Thank you so much for sharing this info on generators. When I saw several commenters (including yourself) say *buy once, cry once*, it convinced me to go for the gold. I never worried much about when the power was out UNTIL my mom came to live with me 3 years ago. My oldest son has a generator, and whenever my power goes out (which is QUITE frequently), he brings his over to help me out. However, I don't like depending on ANYone for ANYthing, and have been shopping and saving for several years now until I found just the right one for me. I see that the wheel kit is available, and I would DEFinitely need that. I still have questions about fuel, tho. One person said use "NON-oxygenated* fuel ONLY ... another said use Ethanol... and I think another said DON'T use Ethanol. Somebody said something was $20./gal, but, stores longer. I can't remember, and I can't find it again :/ So ... *what kind of fuel do you use?* *If gasoline, regular or premium?* And, *how many gallons do you store?* I only know of one kind of fuel stabilizer, which I put in my lawnmower for the winter & it's called: *Stabil*. *What kind of stabilizer do you use?* Thank you in advance, if you get a chance to answer these questions. Love & prayers
Stabil is good and we use about 90 octane.. not super but not regular... try not to get ethonal but just do not let the gas set inside the gene.. use it up and store it empty...
Thank you, Doug! I'll let you know when I'm ready to buy. At least I know what the goal is, and, that's a BIG step in the right direction! Thanks again!!! :-D
Thanks for always sharing knowledge👍🏽 Noise level is a big deal (to me) when considering a generator. 👍🏽 Good to know about the inverter for electronics.
Great video thank you. Generators are kind of a mystery for me, I have lots to learn. I live up in the mountains of northern Quebec in Canada and we often lose power during the really cold winter months...having a generator is essential since we don't have a wood stove for heat here in the rental. I was looking into the Honda's mainly because I heard about the low decibel noise.
I am thinking about a converted 5 HP Brigs engine to steam - to a alternator to several 12v Batteries then a inverter to make AC power. I've been studying the idea, watching others and building (in my mind better ideas) such as simple things from grease zerts to auto oilers. Right now just an idea but soon to be in the works. I would like to set other people and myself tell their electric company to lower my bill.
Hi Doug: I have a small engine shop and actually many people ask to have the low oil shutoff by-passed due to failure of the switch and not due to low oil. Daily maintenance is the clue. Keep your oil changed and full and generators will last for many years. Also rodents will get into them, build nest and cause overheating and they also chew the wires on the coils etc. Thanks for the great video's.
Doug: You mentioned pumping water out of the pond. Do you have a vid on that, what kind/size pump, what do you use the water for as opposed to rain catchment water? I also noticed your pond is fenced, reason for that? I appreciate all the information you share ... thanks..

I built a 24 gallon aluminum tank with a petcock. Turn it off while gens running so the fuel runs out the engine.
Honda generator used in Alaska Bush for years. Glad they are so smaller now. Would say was awesome back in the day. Glad to see the advances today.

Thanks Doug, good information.
These are great generators and SO quiet! A lot of people that have living quarter horse trailers have these for their trailers too!
Great video keep up the great work I myself use a Honda generator very quiet love it expensive but built to last
Many who live in Missouri may remember the huge ice storm several years back I know Kennett Missouri was out of power for 16 days that would have been handy
Wow! A quiet generator! I love the low oil and I tip! We will look into those. Thanks Doug!
excellent Video my friend.
Just get a Honda lol
A friend of mine told me decades ago, "Why are you going to spend money on junk when you will eventually will buy something of quality?" "All off the money you spent on the junk is wasted when it could have been used toward quality." Decades later.....it holds true. Although you don't "see" it until you "see" it. Honda is the best. Period.
Early morning Doug and Stacy! Nothing better!
I hope that Stacy is well. I don't remember seeing her since the wind and rain storm. I ask God humbly to Bless you.
Missed yesterday's video eh? 🤣😂👍
Hi Doug and Stacy just to let you know I love your video's. I find them very interesting and entertaining. Some of the content would not apply to me but are still very informative. Keep up the good work all the best . Reg Shannon In Dublin ireland
Sláinte Mhaith from the US.
Thanks for sharing this information, Honda makes pretty good lawn mowers too
Good morning Doug. Really enjoyed this video. I Have been thinking of buying a generator, so this information comes in very handy. You Rock!
The eco mode runs lower rpm until there is a draw that requires more so it saves gas as well as quite. Regular mode just runs wide open so it is always ready for a full load.
Super helpful video for someone looking at off grid energy options
Ps. My honda 2000's where giving me around 10k to 12k hours before the rings where sticking to the piston amd failing. But thats years os use. We use ours every day
Was it able to fix?
@@anthonya8200 i just bought new ones
I like being on the grid myself. But we have a Honda 2000 for backup. Hate the wheel kits also but a garden wagon is much better for moving around.
Thanks for the tips on generators Doug. Have a great evening, Andreas from Off Grid Sweden 🇸🇪
Awesome information on the Honda generators, saves us a lot of time and errors thank you.
Awesome video, I didn't know that the Honda generator had the oil shut off. All the info was great, Thank you Doug
Hi! we have the big one like yours,we have the generator for 11 yrs already and is very quite.
Really nice video with some useful information. Thanks for sharing so much about your experiences!
Thanks so much for sharing this information I have friends that like to Camp a lot and if they ever get a generator I can give them that information.
Good video. A generator is on our list especially after we lost power for 24 hrs this spring.
Can you do a video on figuring out your generator needs? A very good video. My husband and I both have sleep apnea and I do fear a power outage.
You can also check out some pawn shops or other places to get generators cheaper. We got ours at a pawn shop.
Thanks for this info. I've been trying to figure out what I need as a backup. Will have to save up for the EU3000IS.
It's a work horse and just a fyi I didnt show the pull cord back up that started it with a few extra pulls because of the cold 🤠👍 and use our Amazon link wink wink it's under the video in

Hey Doug and Stacy 😊
That was some great information. Thanks we have the little Honda generator we saving for a bigger generator .. we use it all the time .
Thanks Doug
As always love you’ll videos .

Great information thanks for sharing God bless
Lift with the back and save the legs- Doug!
I've been thinking about getting a generator and Honda is what I've had on my mind to check out. Thanks for the video
You could use our Amazon Link 😉👍
@@OFFGRIDwithDOUGSTACY if I end up buying one I'll use it thanks
Thanks for the info. It is always welcome and interesting! 😊
Another good vid . Thanks please keepem coming.
I'm not knocking Hondas because all of their products are excellent, but i couldn't bring myself to pay what they're asking. I have a Honeywell 5500 that i paid $700 for new. love this thing, but i do have a wood pile that is for noise containment. you definitely can't beat a Honda for their quietness.
very good info. we blew ours last year during the hurricane.
Hey Doug :-D
Thank you so much for sharing this info on generators. *What kind of stabilizer do you use?*
Thank you in advance, if you get a chance to answer these questions.
That is so funny, the generator will be going in the background.....solar.... I love my solar dryer, though.....thank you for the information....
Thanks for always sharing knowledge👍🏽 Noise level is a big deal (to me) when considering a generator. 👍🏽 Good to know about the inverter for electronics.
Noise? Non- issue.....The Honda EU 2000 is 53 decibels. Thats like a normal conversation.
Great video and information... thanks so much!
This was very timely for me. Thanks.
These make pure cine wave electricity. The louder ones back in the day made modified sine wave
maraming salamat po!!! MABUHAY!!!
Good review! Thanks Doug
Perfect topic as usual. Thanks so much. Always helpful.
Doug: You mentioned pumping water out of the pond. Do you have a vid on that, what kind/size pump, what do you use the water for as opposed to rain catchment water? I also noticed your pond is fenced, reason for that?
I appreciate all the information you share ... thanks..
I've been meaning to ask those same questions but I keep forgetting. I hope he has time to answer them.
Great info on generators! Thanks for sharing!
