Doug, I am in the hat "hoot"/ camp. I have zero construction experience, but I found this whole build fascinating. I learned enough to even have some questions, which were answered in this video. Loved it!
I have french drains at the bottom and at 4ft from the top to get water away from my structure. Even with all the drains we had a 12in rain and still got water in the cellar. In our humidity we get high humidity in our cellar even with a concrete floor due to the air coming in through our vent pipes.
Doug...what a helluva job. All the setbacks, hard work, and repairs you have had to do and you STILL have a good attitude. I would have just buried the whole thing and forgot about it! Still love that mangled hat!
That is cool that you took the time to explain things a little deeper. You didn’t just throw a video together and assume everybody knows what’s going on. Really helps inform us people watching the ins and outs of the system you used and I can totally see all the advantages. Thank you
Hey Doug, PLEASE READ SOON! my friend says you should put a 14 inch or smaller pipe to bring cool air from below the ground and run it to your home, make sure to do this it will help keep the cabin cooler during the summer. Best Luck
My hats off to you guys! This is a lot of work !!! It is sped up and just watching that makes me think how tired you guys are at the end of the day! Well worth it in the long run though! It’s awesome !
THAT was a well made Hat!! Through the brush-hog!! I thought the dogs got it!! Lol. Lots of great information on this video, I may have to watch this again, just to retain it all! Greg seems like he knows his stuff! Everything is looking so good! This is better than any TV Series I've ever watched!! Just as suspenseful too! Never know what's going to happen next! Bee blessed Danny and Rita in TN on Rooster Ridge
Oh my, I hadn’t noticed your hat until you mentioned it. Greg is really knowledgeable. I like it when someone knows their stuff. Thanks for all this information.
Just like legos and what a great job you guys did!! Now for the staircase and finishing touches. You must be looking forward to start storing your harvest :-) Good bunker too, will be like sleeping in the Tuck shop lol
Vital information about concrete for those considering basement/root cellar/etc. Like myself, I'm sure there are those who learned some valuable information here. One of the best construction nuggets yet, and more proof positive you really do your homework well...! Thanks, Doug...!
I had to stop half way through the video to talk to my husband and tell him about this build. He was quite interested in the R factor. Great video, thank you.
Hey Doug and Stacy 😊 Great video.. 🤗 We still watching and learning.. Wow it coming a long great . And what a root cellar it going to be when you finish .. never seen one with running water and shower .. so we been watching Thanks Doug Blessing 👩🌾
Thank you so much. Been looking so hard for a monolithic pour video and you guys provided me with the best info ever. Will touch base with Greg in the near future and God Bless you all for putting this out for everyone.
Well, that was a great nugget for me, I did not know there was no gas-off from the styo and energy saving. Was shown these when they first came on market. Now I could be interested. Thanks.🙄 Florida
These kinds of builds are really cool to see done! My parents just built there house with a monolithic pour, they have big shatter proof windows with giant shutters on the south side for light its the only sign theres a house there. its pretty impressive to see.
Quad-lock is a great ICF Form. Most people don't know that you can get wider concrete by just changing the webbing from green to yellow or red. Different color make the concrete inside the form a different width so you can have it wider on the bottom and then get narrower as it comes up if that what is required, like multi storied buildings. Plus like you said you can get it wider for better insulation properties. I will be using it later in my woodshop projects so I was researching it, Glad to know where I can get it, He is closer to me than the place here in my state.
ray nall and he is a super guy and a #homesteadhomie 👍👊 we had about zero waste on this project which is a testament of how he calculates the job and his dedication to saving the end user $$$$$
I'm on the side of "that hat is a hoot" and I'd wear it until it falls apart too. As to the ICF; very interesting and good to know. Even though I'm not building anything, I do serve as a fountain of trivial information on occasion and come out with all sorts of things people need to know.
Wish I had got to before you poured the floor there's a product used in pouring tanks . It's basically a wide ribbed rubber strap that pours part in the floor and part of it sticks out and is poured into the wall part . It's a gasketbetween the floor and wall poured in.
I've been watching this entire playlist. I shared this video and the one of the ICF and rebar to hubby, since we are talking about doing our own build. He'll probably check out the rest of the playlist also.
GM, have you done a video of your process of moving out from the city life? One video showed photos of your home, you guys on a motorcycle, etc. Did you have videos from early on? Was there a day to day emotional adjustment as you sold, packed, gave away your things.?
Just wanted to make sure when I put my order in..... please, please.... make sure the shippers put...."LIVING CARGO"... Labels on the crates you guys are in, so I can open that one first!! Lol. Great job! Thanks for sharing and God bless!
Wow! A root cellar that size will need a lot of air moving through it. Circulation and then exhausted. You may even need a dehumidifier to control the humidity. Mold will be a problem and a challenge.
Greg is such a kind, knowledgeable and gentle soul. I so enjoy watching your friendship with him. Doug you are a hoot and I love your spirit. The hat 😜 . . . . quirky just like you. 😉💓 I vote keep it as well. Now dear Stacy is the one that has to keep looking at that 🤣🤣🤣 . . . I’m curious what her thoughts are. Blessings of continued joy and success on all your ventures. 🙏🏽🇺🇸
Thanks for taking a break from this Doug to give me a tour of your place! I've got one more question for Greg. He mentioned that you can put your interior finishes right onto the wall without needing another set of framing. How about the outside? If part of this wall was above ground, could you put some kind of siding (wood/metal/etc) directly onto this wall?
Fy Nyth yes, the ties allow for that as well, like the stuff we took off the outside at the start of the video, it was all connected to the "ties" that are inside the wall
Root cellar envy! Thx for filming this series, we’re planning to use the same walls as a stem wall for our Quonset house build. I love gathering info from others experiences! And someday we’ll build a root cellar/bunker as well. 😁
Goodness it is hard to put on this sticky stuff makes me think of some wall papers!! Seems to be in purpose for water proof..but ..it is hard to put on!!.hope it will hold it’s promesses...
Can you use the forms on an existing basement, (cinder blocks were not filled when built and they are shifting) never knew about the heat loss it answers so many questions
Great Q&A! So much good info. 👍🏻 I live on a hilltop, so I'm considering putting in a shelter (hurricanes...West Mobile).😳 Elmer's glue and a little reweaving will prolong your hats life.
Wow this was a great series of videos I've learned a lot of things that I haven't seen done I especially liked the ICF experience and I'm going to check out the prices on it, loved the questions and answers at the end , for some reason TH-cam wasn't showing me all of the videos that I have watched so I had to go back and look for the thumbs up to make sure that I had really watched it but I watched them all and it was a learning experience but I'm a hands on kind of guy and wish I could have been there from start to finish with you , keep these vids coming you carry a bigger impact on us than you think ,I really appreciate you guys
Tornadoes are no joke! In the late 70's, my wife and I went thru one outside Trenton, Mo. The old 'beehive'/brick storm shelter where we were visiting had trash and rats in it so we ran a mile down the road to our host's sister's house. When we went back later, the house where we where staying was GONE! And the storm shelter had nothing but collapsed bricks in it. Had we stayed, we'd both be dead. Only time I've ever been grateful to rats. We immediately flew back to Commiefornia with nothing but the clothes on our backs. I'll take earthquakes any time.
Visit icfmissouri.com for more information about using this product.Greg is a great person to work with and will help you make the right decisions.
👍🙂
What a good friend to have. Don't lose this one! Great info
Doug, I am in the hat "hoot"/ camp. I have zero construction experience, but I found this whole build fascinating. I learned enough to even have some questions, which were answered in this video. Loved it!
Trump is a crypto jew. You want him? Please take him!! I can't wait for our first Amish president. Return this country to the basics.
Greg is a wealth of knowledge! We had a great time meeting him at the #homesteadinglifeconference.
I have french drains at the bottom and at 4ft from the top to get water away from my structure. Even with all the drains we had a 12in rain and still got water in the cellar. JUST.... what I needed! Thank you. O, I have yet to say: I am a Homestead Homey! There... I feel better. Be well.
Doug...what a helluva job. All the setbacks, hard work, and repairs you have had to do and you STILL have a good attitude. I would have just buried the whole thing and forgot about it! Still love that mangled hat!
This was a neat thing to watch. 😲 WOW! So interesting to follow. Lots of work. Looking forward to seeing this finished. I’m sure you are. 👍
I like your hat just the way it is Doug; it now has "character"!
That is cool that you took the time to explain things a little deeper. You didn’t just throw a video together and assume everybody knows what’s going on. Really helps inform us people watching the ins and outs of the system you used and I can totally see all the advantages. Thank you

This was so fascinating to watch. We live in an ICF home and we love it! Its amazing how energy efficient they are. Thank you for this series.
Thanks for sharing, warts and all. We really like Greg! God bless & congratulations!
Yay! Another root cellar video!!! This covered a lot of good questions! Great vid! Thank you for sharing!
The Q & A was great!
You can tell Greg's passion and that he definitely "knows his stuff."
You two did a good job on the root cellar. Won't be long now and it'll all be done.
Vital information about concrete for those considering basement/root cellar/etc. Like myself, I'm sure there are those who learned some valuable information here. One of the best construction nuggets yet, and more proof positive you really do your homework well...! Thanks, Doug...!

Great video.. 🤗
We still watching and learning..

👩🌾
This root cellars is looking great waiting for all the finishing touches on it. Keep those awesome videos coming 👍 😀🌠
Great that you both sat down to answer questions about the build. Thank you.
I haven’t seen the playlist. But I’m going to binge watch them.
God bless🙋🏻♀️♥️♥️
Thanks for spilling the beans on the hat..lol. good video Doug. See ya in the morning 😀
I bet y’all are glad to be done with that project! Well done folks!
Thank you so much. Been looking so hard for a monolithic pour video and you guys provided me with the best info ever. Will touch base with Greg in the near future and God Bless you all for putting this out for everyone.
Your distressed, yet still-functioning hat is symbolic of the ups and downs of the root cellar build.
That hat is symbolic of homesteading in general, not just the root cellar build.
Great video. Greg is a good friend to have for sure. Seems like a good guy.
Great info!! Def taking notes if we get to build a root cellar in the future
Well, that was a great nugget for me, I did not know there was no gas-off from the styo and energy saving. Was shown these when they first came on market. Now I could be interested. Thanks.🙄 Florida

There is a lot of great information and thanks for letting us know where we can buy the water proof barrier. 💕

Thanks for giving us the website!
took me a minute to understand but i get it now. We've always used the term BUSH HOG, as in the brand name of the mower...
Good morning! Great information. Root cellar looking good :)
Looking great from here God bless
Awesome update, seems things are moving along nicely. Thanks for the resources and wisdom on this matter.
I don’t know your’ friends name but he is a mine of knowledge and advice.,thank you dear friend for Doug and Stacy...and for us also!!!

How funny i won't be distracted wondering about the hat lol i don't have Facebook time to look it up so ya thanx 🙋
Forgive me if I somehow missed it, but did you ever post a video with a finished tour & how it's been working out for you?
Not "finished" but more recent vids and working on it right now
I love the hat!!! Waste not, want not!!! Great video! Thanks, Doug and Greg!
I'd love to have a root cellar, but lots of water in the ground here. We'll have to look into an above ground option.
Having worked in a factory the manufacturer poly styrene foam usually the process for expanding styrene is using steam, certainly don’t burn it
great info on ICF build Thanks
Hey Doug, EZ on that white lightning in the jug!!! LOL
Very interesting and informative. Thank you.
The intro actually lifted my spirits
He is a cute E pie! I'm not looking tho just thought I would let him know!
this was the best information, really have to think of our next build
If you were starting out fresh and rebuilding the cabin and the bunker/cellar would you put the cabin on top of the bunker/cellar?
Great job guys. Learned a lot. I know this video is older but I'm playing catch up. : )
thanks for the answers and hat hoot guys
Wow! Great job a lot of work I see!! Love the music by the way so relaxing!!
Thanks for taking a break from this Doug to give me a tour of your place! I've got one more question for Greg. They used this product on "this old house" and touched on the finishing of it. PBS is the best channel on TV.

Excellent information, thank you.
Great video! Very informative and thanks for doing it!
Thank you
Great job guys! Love the hat Doug..lol
Lots of nuggets today, I knew nothing about ICF.
Well i figured it got caught in either your mower or when you was chain sawing something.
HI DOUG And STACY
Doug.. We have a product called "bondcrete...great stuf
Very informative. Thanks.

I watched all of your videos on the root cellar then they stoped. Are you going to update us on the progress?
On deck
Nice work. Great videos.
What did it cost for the ICF and concrete to build the cellar?
Thanx sooo much
Who's this handsome Greg guy? Looks like he knows what he's talking about! ;)
(No, no, I'm not weird. The joke is that is my dad, and he DOES know what he's talking about. Most of the time. Also we're all super proud of him.)
Cool cellar and quite the fashion statement with the hat!
Why not a French drain around the perimeter? Also, how about putting up the roof to keep rain off?
Lol keep going
Your hat looks like the animal's have been having fun with it lol.
That "ha" after the headphones joke got me 😂😂😂
I was close about your hat. I was thinking weed eating and the wind took it. Cute touch though. lol!!
TH-cam doesn’t pay enough: let’s take up a collection for a new hat! Haha haha
This series is great
Thank you for this information.
Where is the waterproofing on the bottom of the floor?
Cool project great info. PS, Where can I get a new hat?
