He was my girlfriends neighbor at an apartment complex in Houston Texas in the early 80s. We were invited to his apartment and I noticed him in all these pictures with the Stones, The Who, and a bunch of other bands. I said who are you again, and he said who he was when he introduced himself in the firstplace, I didn't really put it together until seeing the pictures on the wall. We talked for quite some time, he was already in a wheel chair then. He said he had only 3 things of any real value, and the IRS wanted to take them from him.
A Chet Atkins signature guitar, I believe there was a Siver anniversary Strat, and possibly the only tortus shell bass in the world. That may have been a gift..not sure now, it was a long time ago. He said the money raised for him to pay medical bills somehow got him in trouble with the IRS, could we please keep his guitars for a while. He was with a very attractive brunette who's name I don't recall. I've been telling this story for many years. My girlfriend was from Middlesex, and that apartment complex was full of people from Europe. I've been playing guitar for about 45 years, meeting him, hearing his story, and finding him to be such a great guy was such a wonderful experience. I was a kid from MN that played in a little band in high school. And I got to help out a real rock star that paved the way for a lot of other musicians. How freaking cool is that! That meeting tells me he must have been a trusting guy, we had never talked before that day. Also,he said an allergist gave him the most relief from MS, maybe that still holds true. Would be great to have someone who knew him verify what I've shared.
    RIP

That’s a great story. Ronnie went from the highest of highs to the lowest lows. He sure as hell didn’t deserve to go out like that and we missed out on a real original who could write beautiful songs. He packed a-lot of life into those Small Faces - Faces- and Slim Chance years though. Boo Oldfield was probably the girl.

He is the most engaging, genuine talent who stayed true to his dreams. Sadly, he died young due to a swindle. Ronnie Lane did not deserve the cards he was dealt, but his music will always be somewhere in time and space. That makes me smile because his talent continues to shine.

I saw him back in 1983 when they did a set of benefits for him. He could barely walk on stage; but I never saw a bigger smile than his when he thanked the audience and musicians in Dallas for the show. I barely knew his music before that show. That was 1983 and he was an "old man" to my eyes. I will be 54 in June. He died way, way too young. Such a sad end to such a personable man. I drive through Trinidad, CO several times a year. One of these days; I will visit his resting place in that hole-in-the-wall just to say thanks for the tunes. :/

Ooh La La and Debris are my two most favorite songs. I visited him a few times when he lived in Austin. He mentioned he'd spent a lot of time with his grandfather when he was a young lad. I wonder if his grandfather was in Paris during WWI.

    • @fortboy66

The debris refers to the brick lane market that used to be on Sunday mornings in Bethnal Green area of East London, when I used to go there in the late 70s to the late 80s much of it was on the remains of knocked down houses, when Ronnie went there with his dad in the late 40s, early 50s? It was probably debris from bombed out houses from the blitz? The shop were Steve Marriot and Ronnie met for the first time is still there today, but it's not a record shop anymore, think it's a plumbing supply shop?

I knew the "small faces" back in 1967 when one of the first different songs starting playing on my local top 40 station I thought it was a cool song. I was the oldest in my family and really had no older mentors to talk rock smack to. So exposure to "good music" was until I got to college. But even then I did not broaden my taste enough. But thanks to youtube and wikipedia I started finding out who the small faces/faces were all about. Steve Marriott, Ian McLagan, Kenny Jones and Ronnie Lane. And as my fellow Christian would say "I saw the Light". I wished I had found out about Ronnie a long time ago. A masterful singer-songwriter and story teller. Unfortunately MS cut his life short. But thanks to youtube we have videos and can still listen to this great performer.
