    A yoke is fine 99% of the time. It's the 1% when you are in a panic situation and loose control on ice or a slick surface. My buddy has (had) a yoke on his Model 3 and hit an icy patch on a bridge. He told me it was terrifying trying to get back in control with half a steering wheel. He was a HUGE fan of the yoke and now will not buy a car with one. There is a reason in performance driving school that the instructor will go over the importance of hand placement and "steering wheel slide" where you let the wheel slide through your hands while maintaining an optimal had position and never crossing over your hands in tight turns. F1 cars have yokes because the steering ratio is so tight, you never turn the "wheel" more than 180 degrees.

      I would take a yoke with super tight steering, or a wheel. But I don't really want a yoke that goes over about 75 degrees in either direction.

      @Enforcer_WJDE 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Aptera is supposed to have a tight steering ratio, looks like they tat least thought of that on the model S. Just 2 turns from left to right. The Model 3 doesn't have the steering ratio because it wasn't meant to be driven with the yoke?

  • @phil4986

    The skirting around the rear wheel is about three inches shorter so the wheel sticks further out of the bodywork.
    This is excellent for real world performance.
    It provides extra clearance for suspension travel over bad bumps.
    The shape of the front skirts has changed to better reflect a survivibility of those skirts in real world use.
    These front skirts present a formidable real world problem when it comes to dealing with curbs,speed bumps,potholes and entrances into parking lots that go up from the road surface you are driving off of.
    I think that Aptera may find they have to go with a modified front wheel skirt,flush hub outside cover system that makes the covering less aerodynamic but lighter and more survivable in the real world.
    I would hate if they had to do that because those front wheel skirts really set the look of the Aptera apart from the crowd.
    The most important thing for those front wheels is to do every possible thing to support the survivability of those electrical wheel engines.
    Nice to see changes that reflect the design actually living in the real world environment the Apteras will be driven in.

    2 things I want changed are the yellow/orange lights on the wheels should be a bit wider. From what I've heard they're the turn signals and might be hard to see when they're on, especially during the day. It would also be good to at least have a choice for the yoke be leather if we choose to.

  • @robertkirchner7981
    @robertkirchner7981 2 ปีที่แล้ว +23

    I still have doubts about the ability to abruptly countersteer in icy conditions with a yoke.
    I will be disappointed if the side view cameras only give a view when the turn signal is on. I prefer to know who's in the lanes to my rear sides at all times. Are there really drivers who only check their side view when they're changing lanes?

    • @feandil666

      the yoke gives you way better control, they do need a sharper turn ratio on it though, makes sure you can lock the wheel before 180 degrees, not a full turn like on a regular car. if they tune it for that then it's far better for stability and vehicle control. but I don't know whether the general public is used to drive karts, modern cars tend to be "lazy" on the steering.

  • @CRuM770

    As a person who often drives with one hand at 12 o'clock, I do not want to see a yoke. Otherwise I'm hoping this car doesn't take too long to get to Canada. Best guess right now is Q4 24, but promises have been made and broken by many companies in the past.

    Most manufacturers seem to treat them as an afterthought when in fact they should be critically designed to aid the driver. Mainly significant overlap to prevent gaps. It is quite annoying when you pull the visors down and find the sun glaring through.

    Rode in the original in Carlsbad when they had a couple out for demos! Watched the Jay Leno demo just prior. He commented on the split window and it was explained as a aerodynamic solution. I must say having a black band directly in line of sight would be a constant irritant, not something one could get used to. they should find a better solution, perhaps a narrower band or a thicker top rim of the window.

  • @deanmcmanis9398

    Nice comparison of the two models from the pictures provided. I prefer the design revisions for most all of the changes. The center light and mirrors were for regulatory reasons, and the Aptera team did a good job in meeting those requirements without ruining the styling or functionality. I like the added center screen, and I'm fine with the yoke. I do hope that they don't do a white interior, or at least offer an all black option for the dash and steering yoke. You didn't really mention the revised fender front rubber trim, which should help with paint loss from steep driveways, speed bumps and parking berms. Thanks for spotting the added solar panels. The added panels could potentially provide 8-10 more miles of solar range under optimal conditions, and a 13% improvement will no doubt help for less optimal conditions (partial sun, poor angles, clouds). I think that the changes make the Aptera look more finished and upscale than before, and I hope that the design changes translate well to the production model.

    Something to think about, at least in my local regulations an autocycle like the Aptera needs a mirror but it doesn't have any requirements beyond that as far as position ect, it just needs one actual mirror, so if you forego the extra solar on the rear lid you can do without the side mirrors while using a center rear view mirror along with the side cameras.

    • @Nothingman88

    Cameras are allowed in New Zealand for side view mirrors. There are Honda E driving around with them. Our car legislation says that if other countries allow a safety feature or vehicle feature in their legislation, it it automatically allowed here. On Aptera's website, choose the vehicle in the left menu and swipe up once where you see the world solar map, it's set up to showcase the combination of solar and regular EV charging. You choose your region, how many miles a day you typically drive resulting in how many times you would have to charge the vehicle in a year.
      Having solar eliminates the need to plug it in at the end of every day. Instead, it could be once a week, or once a month, or never-- depending on where you live and how far you typically drive.

    I'm seriously hoping Aptera can deliver and register at least one car in each of 50 states before the end of the year. I want to see how the departments of motor vehicle safety and the insurance industry handles them. I should think it will be ok but there are those jurisdictions trying to turn back the clock on all electric cars. Harder to turn it back once accepted.
    Meanwhile... I wonder if those panels behind the seats allows one to access tie downs to keep surfboards for example secure. I'm praying the seats are ergonomic or adjustable for those with back issues. I will be curious if the seats can provide outside ventilation as well as conditioned cooling or heating. Designed in California, I'm hoping the wheel covers won't be destroyed by Michigan potholes in the Spring. Still all those are minor concerns.
    The bigger concern is with political unrest and a very real chance of it spreading, if not in the present, but future, has Aptera considered scenarios for the need of sourcing their parts from elsewhere? Having said that, I definitely want to see them succeed beyond expectations as they race toward their delivery time. ...
    I ordered the Noir...as every single high efficiency car I've had to date has been gray... I'll have to see how the gray looks in the flesh. Maybe gray is the color of efficiency?
    Success to us all...

    On the yoke:
    My wife is a quadruple amputee. She lost both her hands through the wrist and both legs below the knee. She can drive an unmodified car with a steering wheel. Since she cannot grip the steering wheel, she sticks her stumps through the empty areas of the steering wheel. My car has 4 struts from the center to the outer ring, giving 2 small holes, and 2 large holes. And 6 control surfaces. With the single bottom loop, the yoke has 2 control surface, which is much less useful. She uses touch screens and controls without difficulty.

    • @CyberOwners

      Wow. Seems like there should be a better method for her to be able to control everything. Someone should really think through that use case and come up with something.

    • @mikegrok
      @mikegrok 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CyberOwners There are things that we can clamp to the steering wheel, which she can put her elbow and forearm in, but that puts her face and body very close to the steering wheel. In case of an accident, if the airbag deployed, she would be too close, and could get severely injured.
      We will find something that works. As much as possible, she does not want anything to have special adaptions for her use. In part it is vanity, but it is also practically. She can get in nearly any unadapted vehicle and drive it, it will be annoying if companies start producing vehicles that are not safely functional for her for an aesthetic reason. She has an extreme case of lack of grip, but others with an impaired grip will also find this frustrating. Even Tesla at lest put a center column to add a pair of control surfaces. It is the difference between moving 20 degrees to get a grip, and moving 120 degrees to get a grip, One is annoying, the other is dangerous.

I like the idea of electric vehicles, but one reason I've never been interested in a Tesla for example, is I hate the interior. I'll always prefer a dash layout where the gauge cluster/screen and center infotainment screen are molded into the dash. A few of my preferred brands that tend to do this are Ford and Volvo. I like having dedicated knobs and buttons for climate control and such on the dash. As for the steering wheel, I'd still prefer a traditional offering, or turn to the aftermarket for one. Some of my gripes aside though, and I'm still quite impressed. Much better thought out and engineered than something like the Elio was.

One of the only differences between my car which is a 2013 compared to the 2012 model was an ever so slight change to the mirror shape to help aerodynamics. PErsonally, I think the egress is going to be a deal-breaker for me. I'm 6'4" and I've seen the video of people getting in and out of this car, and half the people practically tripped out because there's a lip along the door frame at the bottom. Funny, but the Ford MachE has the same problem. Aptera needs to address this, IMO.
    Also, there has to be two things: Door arm rest, and cup holders. It suycks driving for hours with no arm rest. It sucks not having a place to put your drink. My main concern with this car is SERVICE. Who's going to be able to work on it? Also, those extra-wide front tire areas are going to make it hard to park in most parking lots, and you know they're going to get dinged and crunched on a regular basis. Hopefully, Aptera at least puts in cameras for a top-down 360-degree view, like I have in my Bolt EUV Premier - and Ioniq 5 also has.
