As a reservation holder, it makes me comfortable with the wait because we can expect a high quality, safe and fun to drive vehicle that will be a dream to operate. Great stuff. - Thx PS. Miss the intro that everyone wants to change but hey, that's just me.
I really like that information about a plug for external solar panels, A lot of RV's now come with a plug for portable solar panels and that would be a great thing to have unless they would maybe incorporate it into the charge port if they were going to have a dongle for vehicle to load it could be made to accept line in from external solar. I saw an episode of Black Mirror where a woman drives to a building in the desert and unfolds a solar panel across he trunk of her car and plugs it in before going inside. I just like the idea of being able to charge without a grid and flexible and folding panels would fit nicely in that hatchback floor
Congratulations on your successfully accessing of, and interview with Aptera co-founder Chris Anthony. I love your TH-cam podcasts about my beloved Aptera concept. Great questions.
Great stuff. TBD if his statements regarding tesla is confirmation we get the plug - hope so but many don't. Chris kinda went wide with V2L since it is simply providing an AC plug and not a complex V2G solution which admittedly is not really an off the shelf option yet. Always love to hear we get more storage space. Great they are still thinking of other finishes and think in the right conditions a wrap may last 20 years (I park in a garage). PS: I just noticed with the new logo. Shouldn't the interrupted circle be in the inner one - I assume it is meant to be read as an abbreviation of Owners Club from left to right. Currently it reads "Club Owners" which is kinda a different idea (or french). PSS: Yes I know owners club in french is club des propriétaires but the point is its backwards.
Great job Steve. Glad you got to ask a lot of the questions we've been talking about in discord. I wish you had asked about the hemp though. 🤣 Looking forward to the rest of your visit videos.
Steve, excellent video! I understand that it might be a conflict of interest but you might consider working for Aptera doing these interviews. At least get a major discount on a vehicle and hopefully one of the first to get delivery. The Aptera marketing team should have been putting this type of video out at least monthly. If Aptera is really going to deliver production vehicles by the end of 2022, it would be worth a monthly trip for you to get an update. If things are on schedule and delivery is happening at the end of the year, you will really boost the confidence of so many people who are interested in this vehicle. As a former project manager, I know how these things go and timelines do often slip but even if that happens (and likely will) transparency is enormously important. Some of Chris's replies were a bit concerning if they are going to make production vehicles by the end of the year. At this point, the production vehicle should be near design complete. Sure, there will be some minor changes that will likely happen up until August but their suppliers can't just retool over night. There might only be 6 major assemblies that are put together at the Aptera facility but there are still ~1070 parts that need to be put together. Getting those 6 major assemblies to Carlsbad for assembly is a major undertaking given the supply chain issues we are seeing. If you can get down to Aptera on a monthly basis, that would be awesome. This is by far the best video about Aptera that I have seen and I have seen most of them that have been published so far. Your approach on not trying to get an angle or story or to feed your own TH-cam channel was good. You asked good questions and got honest answers. I understand that a monthly trip to Aptera is costly in time and money for you. I hope Aptera sees the enormous value in this video alone and will somehow work with you to make this happen. Even if it was an on-sight video every 6 weeks, it would be a goldmine for them and really give us a ton of good information.
I actually have a pretty busy "regular" job so I can't commit the time to visit them often. But I do plan on going back in summer when they are supposed to have a production intent vehicle ready. At that point there should be concrete answers to many of the questions we all have.
Damn, thanks for asking those questions. I pre-ordered last year and can’t wait to drive it. I hope those questions spark ideas for them to implement if they didn’t think of them already. Awesome update!
As someone who engineers stuff, I hope Aptera can ignore basically every single request in this video. Here is why: every little thing you're asking for would multiply (not add to) the complexity of the car. This inflates the price, slows down delivery, and increases risk. Here is what I want: An Aptera with just enough features to make it a commuter car. Suspension, drivetrain, heat, A/C, lights, seats, airbags, waterproofing/weatherproofing, soundproof where you can. THESE are all the major obstacles that we as Aptera supporters should be most interested in right now. Hell, leave the solar roof panels off the car for the first delivery... just make this car and make it remotely close to the sale price... you'll have a winner. After that you can and will add all these upgrades to make the car even more amazing. But until then, KISS.
Keep it simple for the first version. Get some cash and add the fancy stuff later. (self driving, lane changing, camping, off road) Why isn't his boat company doing the body? Will we get side impact testing as well?
Thank you for the interview. wow, 1500 miles an hour with the tesla super charger. very impressive. nice to see support for additional external solar panels happy to hear about the off-road being able to swap it out as needed. I would prefer that.
I would be careful about taking this as absolute confirmation; I think he was theorycrafting (which obviously he should be careful about... don't want to be Elon). They will probably have trouble removing that heat passively. They need to work out a deal which is made public and solve technical challenges to charge that fast.
@@ccibinel I agree. You might be able to charge at that rate but that is an enormous amount of heat that will have to be dissipated. I have found that fast charging or discharging can really do a number on the battery life. Heat becomes a big factor.
Aptera has previously said they would have 50 kW DC charging which would be 500 miles/hour. Faster charging than this would make cooling more difficult, increase weight, and reduce the battery lifetime. The CCS connector and cable can handle much higher power than the Tesla US connector/cable, so Tesla will need to phase out their own plug soon, although both are fine for 50-150kW. CCS is required in Europe, so no point for Aptera to use a US-only Tesla plug. CCS just needs an adapter to plug into a Supercharger once Tesla allows it.
I think that unless they have found a way to change the hardware with little cost impact, the design limits the maximum charging rate to 50 kW DC 0 or about 500 mph at the full charge rate.
8:30 Reducing HVAC weight that much just for human comfort leads me to believe the battery will not be able to be cooled with refrigerant to coolant heat exchanger. Because it does need considerable capacity to move heat from two loops at once.
I am probably reading and viewing way too many Aptera info sources because the only thing new to me from that video was that it will be longer than before (which I assume will take a while to filter down to the marketing materials) and that they plan to have just assemblies delivered to Carlsbad to be bolted together. Not quite sure what diff it makes if Aptera puts the assemblies together or weather someone else does, to make the volume ramp any easier/faster. Farming all manufacturing out is certainly a risk in this supply chain challenged world but have faith they will pick reliable suppliers. With that assembly detail, we can see why setting up other "factories" will be fairly easy.
Thanks for all the new and confirmed information. Your imaging was sufficient. The content is the important part. I'm looking forward to the rest. Be generous in your editing. We can pick up desired information from the video even if the shot doesn't fit your intended narrative. If you can't work it into your story, show it in your B-roll.
Great interview, Steve. Really interesting to hear Chris talk about the philosophy of Aptera and the ways they have learned from previous ventures and will likely avoid some of the bumpy roads other EV start-ups have encountered getting their vehicles to production and scaling up that production. However, Aptera certainly has their work cut out for them to get a production vehicle out the door by the end of the year. Not impossible, but it'll definitely be a challenge. A busy 8-9 months lie ahead for them. I look forward to your follow-up videos!
I’ve watched a lot of these videos (great job), but was wondering if the Aptera will have windshield wipers. I think I saw/heard something that the rain will ‘peel’ off the windshield, but my worry with city driving, waiting at stoplights and not having good visibility until the rain can peel off. Vancouver Island living makes you aware off rain :-)
Dwayne, this is a great question. We need wind shield wipers for mud, snow and heavy water splash on oncoming vehicles. I did not see them on the Aptera ever.
I'm surprised Aptera wants to outsource the composite shells too. Given Chris's experience in that area and since I thought they were using a separate facility specifically for that. Guess they'll do it themselves only if they have to.
I have watched a few other videos on this vehicle and after watching this video I changed my battery pack selection from the 600 to the 400 mile range. On trips I generally drive 600 to 700 miles a day but it seems to me I can accomplish charging at meal stops to get me to where I need to go that day. No need to spend the extra dollars. Also during the video it was discussed there are still issues developing the 60 watt battery packs so the 40 watt vehicles will probably get delivered first.
I sure hope the customer is able to customize the Aptera car the thumbprint to the original car key option because I am not sure if the thumbprint lock system will work in the Northeastern region if there is freezing rain.
Brilliant interview!!! Great job, Chris was so open and forthcoming. I'm so glad to be an investor, ambassador, and owner to be! Kudos to #Aptera_Motors!!!
I just bought a model Y 3 weeks ago and all I can think about is owning an Aptera Noir one day. Also thank you for the content... you have a knack for this youtube thing!
I wish companies like Aptera would stop overthinking cooled seats. Ventilated seats are easy. A simple DC fan (like a computer fan) with flexible ductwork and perforated seat covers. If you want to get fancy, add an a/c duct where the seat fan pull air from. Just having air flow through the seating surface would have a cooling effect.
🔌Don't be surprised to see Cummins V2G working with Nuvve which has been under test since July of 2020 in Blue Bird's 275 EV school busses will lead the way to a standard.🔌
This is what I want to see! Honesty, engineering, progress. It instills so much more confidence than the marketing videos they put out themselves. I'd rather see them owning up that one or two things will not be there in the first production models, than seeing a video saying everything is amazing. Thanks for asking these questions. Maybe next time you can also get some info on the safety systems. Not just the structural behavior of the vehicle. It's great that the deformation of the body towards the passengers is minimized and that the impact is elongated. Now I just want to know what systems are in place to avoid the passengers from hitting the walls (airbags).
Wow, that was the most informative, interesting, and on-point Aptera video I have yet seen anywhere. Congratulations. Thank you, Steve and Chris! Aptera team, please invite Steve back more often!
@@n.brucenelson5920 Yeah my bad, I got the base solar at first but I added the solar hood. I want rear glass, though. I was leery about the solar until they said they'll be selling replacement kits. I can change them every few years, that works.
Would it be possible to derive power from the suspension system as it moved up and down to add to the regenerative power system? Would you have to use magnetic shocks or something?
Thanks Steve. This was more informative than most of their updates and interviews so far because Chris didn't have to first go through all of the introductory newbie questions, and right got to the current and most important ones on our minds today. The only kinda-bad news that I got from this was that AWD will likely be delayed in the first run of production. And therefore I will probably need to change my order to FWD, with the possibility of adding the rear motor later. So that I don't have to wait an extra 6 months to get mine. Most likely other reservation holders will think the same way, and the unfortunate side effect will be fewer AWD orders, which will in turn lower their priority to add them. It seems to me that they could just add the extra motor initially (for acceleration), and then enhance the motor control later to gain the torque vectoring features using software updates as they develop them. It was good that you asked about the safety testing (which is important) but I think that even more vital to outside confidence in the Aptera will be their 3rd party efficiency, range, performance, and real world solar testing. So many of Aptera's power use and range specs have been estimated with software. And until we see the verified, real-world, FWD/AWD/full-solar, production intent Apteras tested, more and more prospective buyers will be doubtful about the Aptera's bold efficiency claims. Maybe to the point of not taking Aptera seriously.
I'd be happy if they put all of the wiring and plugs in the FWD vehicle to enable a straight swap out and over the air update to the CPU to make it all work. They would then be able to get production humming and offer it as an upgrade.
I love how Chris is honest about the limitation of their product.

As a reservation holder, it makes me comfortable with the wait because we can expect a high quality, safe and fun to drive vehicle that will be a dream to operate. Great stuff. - Thx PS. Miss the intro that everyone wants to change but hey, that's just me.
This was really great, so many good questions.
(Audio quality could be better, e.g. lapel mic.)
I’ve never been one for electric vehicles, but this is one I’m seriously considering.
Thanks Aptera Owners Club for accomplishing this. We've all been waiting for it. Tons of information.
Congratulations on your successfully accessing of, and interview with Aptera co-founder Chris Anthony. I love your TH-cam podcasts about my beloved Aptera concept. Great questions.
Informative interview, especially the crash testing. Thanks! Looking forward to getting more information on how it performs in crash tests.
I was just there 2 on 4/8/22 great team looks good, waiting to get into the new building,✌️
Looking forward to my Aptera, realy like the yoke having used many in aircraft development programs.
Excellent Q & A Steve!! Excellent. Thank you
Great job Steve. Glad you got to ask a lot of the questions we've been talking about in discord. I wish you had asked about the hemp though. 🤣
Looking forward to the rest of your visit videos.
This one has to be one of your best videos yet.
Excellent interview and the new video bumper is an excellent upgrade! Keep up the great work sir!
Excellent questions, thanks.
Damn, thanks for asking those questions. I pre-ordered last year and can’t wait to drive it. I hope those questions spark ideas for them to implement if they didn’t think of them already. Awesome update!
Good question/answer session.
But..
A couple of lapel microphones would have made the audio 1000% better.
Really impressive information during the interview. Looking forward to these on the road.
Steve and Chris, Thank you for taking the time to do a Q&A. Chris, I appreciate you and your team’s efforts in creating a fantastic vehicle!!!
Great job. Thanks for your passion and intelligent questions and analyses.
Hey Steve,
Thank you for doing this! Very informative, great interview!
Great interview. After hearing what Chris had to say, I'm switching to the 400 mile range awd version! Wish Aptera all the best!
Thanks for keeping me up to date with Aptera! I have high hopes for them
Ok. The new intro is pretty awesome. NGL :)
Don't like the sound. The old jingle sound was better. But apparently Aptera Owners chose to ignore the majority vote.
I like the old jingle as well, but there's something about the serene tranquility of waves crashing against a beach that speaks to me. What can I say?
Ill be adding back the jingle. Somehow lost it
@@ApteraOwnersClub Bravo Aptera Owners! You are now in tune with your audience.
Outstanding interview. Totally honest answers without the sales pitch. Just hope I can buy one in Australia.
As someone who engineers stuff, I hope Aptera can ignore basically every single request in this video. Here is why: every little thing you're asking for would multiply (not add to) the complexity of the car. This inflates the price, slows down delivery, and increases risk.
Here is what I want:
An Aptera with just enough features to make it a commuter car.
Thanks Steve and Chris. That was a very interesting and great Q&A.
Excellent interview Steve! I think we all would like to know more about the battery packs, like chemistry and expected life.
This is awesome. Great work. Even more excited for my ride to arrive.
When do you expect to receive it?
This is amazingly awesome, thank you for your time, your great questions and all the important information
Indeed
Keep it simple for the first version. Get some cash and add the fancy stuff later. (self driving, lane changing, camping, off road)
Why isn't his boat company doing the body? Will we get side impact testing as well?
What a wonderful set of Curated questions, thank you so much for sharing this interview!
Thanks Steve for this interview ... great questions and always good to have Chris candid feedback !!!
Thank you for the interview.
wow, 1500 miles an hour with the tesla super charger. very impressive.
nice to see support for additional external solar panels
happy to hear about the off-road being able to swap it out as needed. I would prefer that.
Technically that's 125 miles in 5 minutes! That would be insane...
Awesome interview! Thank you for asking the hard questions!
8:30 Reducing HVAC weight that much just for human comfort leads me to believe the battery will not be able to be cooled with refrigerant to coolant heat exchanger. Because it does need considerable capacity to move heat from two loops at once.
Like the new intro… but I miss the music.
Thanks for sharing the interview and I look forward to the rest. 😊
Thank you for this, Steve. It was well done.
These guys seem to have a lot of sense. I’ll buy two if they can bring this thing to market with anywhere close to the promised specs
I have two standing orders.
@@adimchionyenadum2962 when do you expect to receive the vehicle?
My husband and I have two ordered as well. May increase the orders as grad gifts to our gandchildren
@@johnfitbyfaithnet Unfortunately I am European so no hope till maybe 2025 or earliest mid 2024.
Nice intro a logo, this was a great interview also! I'm looking forward to more as the later versions bring the company to volume production.
Great questions. Great car! The future looks awesome.
Wow. Thanks Steve.
Put a 110 outlet in the front so I can use my CPAP at the rest stop.
It will. But as you say, they might be unnecessary most of the time.
Last I checked rain doesn't peel off the windshield unless they are covered with a specially designed nanoparticle cream
Dwayne, this is a great question. We need wind shield wipers for mud, snow and heavy water splash on oncoming vehicles.
I did not see them on the Aptera ever.
@Robert,
Do you have any assurance that Aptera will have windshield wipers?
@@Kukaboora they are at the very base of the windscreen, tucked out of the way where they won't impact the aerodynamics.
We Love You!!! You Can Do It!!!
Wow. Great interview. Luna is a beauty.
When do you expect delivery?
This interview is really good!!
Awesome! I really do like how open Aptera is. I also like the idea with the offroad package being modular.
This is great! Very good questions and it seems they have a handle on things. Can't wait to drive one or get one.
Wow, that was the most informative, interesting, and on-point Aptera video I have yet seen anywhere. Congratulations. Thank you, Steve and Chris! Aptera team, please invite Steve back more often!
Thank you 🙏
Ordered mine this morning! 400mi FWD no solar with the tent kit. It's gonna be a fun few years watching what happens!
Noor, even the base model gets some solar. The $900 upgrade is for the full solar option.
@@n.brucenelson5920 Yeah my bad, I got the base solar at first but I added the solar hood. I want rear glass, though. I was leery about the solar until they said they'll be selling replacement kits. I can change them every few years, that works.
@@NoorElahi1776 as I plan on camping I did thr same as if I'm sleeping I don't want to be looking at solor panels and would rather look at the stars.
If Aptera is about to manufacturing its own vehicle, what would be the sourcing strategy that can guarantee it to happen?
Xlnt interview. Thanks
Would it be possible to derive power from the suspension system as it moved up and down to add to the regenerative power system? Would you have to use magnetic shocks or something?
Fantastic interview, thanks Steve for doing this.
Lithium ion 12V battery
Woohoo!
Was happy to see that too
