I collected Big 5 war comics from 1961 to 1965. Later in life. when I got nostalgic, I collected all Big 5 war comics--every single one. I enjoyed reading them, grading them and eventually selling them at a profit. A wonderful hobby!
The more I watch this video, the more I realize how much beautiful artwork I have missing in these early DC war comics.
Another great video! When I was a kid in the 70s, I was all about the superheroes. Now, I have such an appreciation for war comics, specifically DC War and Joe Kubert.
There are so many war titles golden age or silver age. Marines in battle, g.i. sweethearts, warfront, war, wings comics, commander battle, I owe so many, I love them a lot. Thank you for sharing these washtone covers. Sea devils in showcase or their own series 1961, had a few washtone or graytone covers as well.

Great collection. I may be the only one bothered by this, but I notice a lot of the helmets look too small at the bottom--almost like an alien head.

You can look up precode war omnibuses. I haven’t seen any other than the EC set, but I’m sure they are out there. Buy them used, way cheaper.
Look for “America at War” by Michael Uslan. Its a reprint anthology of a LOT of classic DC war stories from Toth, Kubert, Heath, Cuidera, Grandenetti, Glanzman, Kirby, John Severin, Drucker, Adams, Glanzman, and a number of others. The hardcover is tough to get in nice shape, but they show up in low to mid grade once in awhile. The paperback is easy to find, but higher grade copies are tougher.
I also like “Sgt Rock’s Combat Tales,” a 2005 pocket digest that has multiple classic peak-period Kubert reprints.
And a tip of the hat to “USS Stevens: The Collected Stories” by Dover Press. Reprints all the quintessential semi-autobiographical USS Stevens stories by the incomparable Sam Glanzman. The heart and emotional impact that Glanzman packed into these mini labors of love (4 page backups starting in the late 60s) are astounding. Best $50 you’ll ever spend on a reprint. Do it.
Oh, and there ARE Sgt. Rock Archive Editions as well as Enemy Ace Archive Editions that reprint the earliest appearances in color and in chronological order. Really really nice.
