“Buy something that’s gonna make you happy when you look at it.” This is sage advice. As someone older who is just starting to collect, I quickly figured this was my path to happiness with comic collecting. If it checks that box, I’m not going to lose anything if I buy it because it’ll always bring me happiness. And I love the Dad and daughter videos, you two are fun to watch. 😊
It would be interesting to compare prices five years from now. I think 2021 was the comic bubble and it inflated prices. Since then, prices have stabilized. I think people have learned their lesson from "extreme" levels of speculation. I think many moderns are dead because they were based on pure speculation. Where as other older books have longevity because people care about the characters and stories (before the comic boom).
Excellent advice, as always, and I appreciate the variety of books you look at and discuss. As a fellow appreciator of Neil Adams work it would be great if you did a show on many of his Superboy, Adventure Comics, Action Comics and Superman covers. Many outstanding, under appreciated and low cost books available.
Was working for comic shop in Richmond during the 91-96 boom and now I laugh at the prices people paid ⬆️ for overhyped ‘must have’ books in those years versus what they are listed for now ⬇️
My rule of thumb is I won’t slab a book that’s at least worth 100,,, now signature series is different I’ll get lil cheap books signed just because of the cover and the artist and nostalgia so that’s a different deal . But over all 100 very minimum
I got that ledgends out of a dollar box sometime in the last three months. Didn't find out it was a key until I downloaded an app to help organize my books. Just thought the cover was interesting
I have a lot of those books, (not graded) but I do have a I-M 55 signature series with Starlin's signature and I am not parting with that at all! Starlin Will not sign anything for CGC since he had an incident with them, it became a little scandal and I have a Star Wars 1 that I had Dave Prowse sign in the 70s with pix to prove it. Great stuff.
It ran nine issues. As a kid, I only had one copy and really was all about superheroes so this did not interest me. Now, I love it and had to get the whole run.
Star Wars 1 has a census problem. Even the 9.8’s aren’t rare with over 800 and more being added on a constant basis. It continues to decline since the Star Wars shows have been poor.
Great show! My buying experience is rather limited, but I have noticed that my copy of Scooby Doo #1 (4.5 off-white to white pages) is still selling for more today than what I paid for it during the boom. I mention this just because it's also a Bronze Age key (and not one that gets mentioned very often).
@@futurepastvintagecollectables Yep, there's a guaranteed scarcity with those comics aimed at younger kids in the early to mid 70s (in your sweet spot, in fact). Not many were saved in nice shape. Do you happen to have many raw Gold Key Scooby Doos in mid grade or better in your stock?
I really enjoy your videos ! All of the books discussed were stellar and totally agree with buying the book and not necessarily the grade ! 2 years ago I bought a raw Batman 237 (Fantast Collection) and just got it graded CGC 9.2 white !
I'd add in that the idea that you can flip a book after a year is always a risky if not downright dangerous idea. Comic book investment literally requires decades, not months. The only people I feel for are the dealers who are forced to take these risks due to customer demand. I've got books I've bought off the shelf, or from a dollar box that literally go for a thousand. But it requires being a collector who stays in the hobby for years.
We all know the channel that is pushing all these books. 😂. They are nonstop comparing to this “ comic boom “. People who were buying all these slabs then and haven’t sold them are losing huge right now.
I wish my daughter and son would have gotten into comics. I only had 30,000 comic books laying around that were there to excite them, didn't happen. My son got into that X-Box thing. I watch you two and wonder what could have been. Rachel IS the star of show! I do CGC slabbing for my primary living. The market is horrifically down, but all good. It's that market cycle thing.
Rule 1: Collect what you enjoy, irrespective of its potential monetary value. If your collection gains value over time, that's a bonus. Rule 2: If you're considering collecting for long-term investment, prioritize the condition. Aim for high grades in gold, silver, or bronze age books. For modern books, look for at least a 9.8 or 9.6 grade; anything lower may not hold significant value. Rule 3: Practice patience. There's no need to rush. With a lifetime of collecting ahead, the books you desire will eventually become available at the price you're willing to pay.

ALL. OF. THIS.
That thumbnail is fantastic! The tongue behind the hair is a nice touch.
I'm subscribing because this was very educational and informative, and you two are delightful to listen to. Glad I clicked!
Awesome! Thank you!
I love the legends series. Just need numbers 1 and 2 in 9.8 to complete the set in all 9.8’s.
started collecting last year. I am really liking your channel. Excellent info and personalities.
You guys make me happy. Great show as always.

Thanks for falling on that sword for us, Dave. 😉
Haha!
Just love the channel been picking up mcfarlane lately
Good job on those - you’ve got some really nice books there - thanks for sharing

I scored a Devil Dinosaur #1 in a dollar bin years ago! It my only Kirby art title, sadly.
Sandman and Omac are also really cool Kirby books from the same time period. They are affordable.

The joker solo series is so popular that it was cancelled after the 10th issue.
It ran nine issues. As a kid, I only had one copy and really was all about superheroes so this did not interest me. Now, I love it and had to get the whole run.
Great content!! Thank you
the opposite of "blue chip" could be "bear chip"
Or "Buffalo chip."
I ❤ the mouse rat t shirt!
I decided to be very patient and avoid making the mistake of overpaying for a book. I am waiting for the right price I feel that I am willing to pay.

Your show is great! Not the same ole books over and over again. And your knowledge is appreciated. Cheerz!
Hey, nice conversation, that was fun -danke

That is a very cool (and always hot) book!
Super hard to get over mid-grade!

Blue Chip or Pink Slip. "Wolf of Wallstreet"
I have $2.00 books that I got for $1.00 that make me happier than $200.00 books I got for $50.00.
I really enjoy your videos ! All of the books discussed were stellar and totally agree with buying the book and not necessarily the grade ! 2 years ago I bought a raw Batman 237 (Fantast Collection) and just got it graded CGC 9.2 white !
Sweet!
Can’t like this video enough
Can you make a video on 1st silver age appearances of DC villians if you have those books
send it all to zero so I can get some cool old books
Been hoarding good keys like SW8, Batman 423, Hulk 340, Nice ASM Keys, Wolverine #1 1982. I think those books even in a down market is a good buy
I thought comics were generally doing a little better than they were prior to COVID-craziness buying?
It really depends on the books. It seems the ones with the biggest increases due to speculation have been taking the biggest hit.
Golden age has been killing it in this down market
Well, the big two are probably dying
Will you be going to Megacon in February?
Not this year. We are too busy to break away

Yes.. I spent 30k last year on comics. I don’t even want to spend $100 this year w all the BS
CGC graded books can be a bad investment
It seems as if only a very small percentage of comics are a good investment, and that is taking perspective into account.
u guys plan on doing e bay live? I ask coz most ppl already have a account with them and I hate signing up for now sites
I’m looking in to it. We have our hands full with two live sales a week now!
We all know the channel that is pushing all these books. 😂. They are nonstop comparing to this “ comic boom “. People who were buying all these slabs then and haven’t sold them are losing huge right now.
Love the house of mystery 191. I have a very nice copy. For some reason im drawn towards puppet/ventriloquist/dummy/doll covers lol
I own high grade raw couples of the Neal Adam's Batman books you covered, so it was nice to see they haven't plummeted in value 😅
