This video is going to teach us how to re-upholster the headliner of a van using an artisan method that consists in just pasting the glue all over the board and while still 'wet' the 'foam backed headliner material' is stuck onto the board.
As said in the video, this method could be used 'just in case' we do not have the required equipment (air compressor, paint gun and the special very fluid solvent-based glue).
As a matter of fact, the 'correct way' to do this procedure is by applying the glue all over both surfaces board and foam material letting them dry for a few minutes before sticking them together...a paint gun sprays the glue very soft to get an even coat...in a next tutorial I will show this procedure which is faster and easier.
Sprayers could be useful, but some of them leave too many bubbles and we cannot get a uniform glueing.

Si va a poder siguiendo este método artesanal...lo que si le recomendaría es hacer el trabajo en una área bien ventilada y de ser posible usar mascarilla de protección por lo del solvente(thinner) que es bien fuerte.

Este método no es el correcto. Como se menciona en la descripción del video, este es un método opcional cuando con contamos con la pistola de aplicar pegamento y compresora. El pegamento que es para brocha es un poco espeso y puede traspasar la 'dubetina'. Hay que tener mucho cuidado con no presionar con los dedos porque puede dejar marcas. Se aplica sólo en el cartón y en húmedo. Se puede aplicar en ambas superficies cuando son áreas pequeñas y huecas que necesitan tomar la forma hundida. Se tiene que pasar en la espuma muy suavemente y con mucho cuidado y dejar secar 10 min aprox.
Lo ideal para tapizar un cielo es aplicar pegamento especial (mas fluido) a ambas superficies.
Dos tipos de pegamento amarillo (base solvente) El que se aplica con brocha y el que se aplica con pistola:

excellent video I normally use spray glue in the can an I roll the liner from back to front but I try this technique. here in Barbados it can be hot at times an sometimes if you don't useable strong glue the liner drop back down but I realized you only glue to board an not the liner but I see why. thanks again
+Stanley Grant Some glue sprayers, could do a nice job...the ones we have overhere work good on the foam, but on the cardboard don't...they do not adhere uniform and form bubbles and heaps.
the method I show in the video 'is not the correct way', but 'it works' and it should be done 'in parts' and stick the foam to the cardboard, while the glue is still 'wet'.
The 'best way' is by using the air compressor and the painting gun to apply the glue all over both surfaces(cardboard and backed foam material)...it could be done in parts or at one go.
It seems that you have a good 'backed foam material' in Barbados that let you roll from the back to the front...I also do this sometimes when I have a good material...other times I have to fold it from the central part to the sides, because if I position it the other way at folding time some creases appear immediately and they would remain forever after glueing procedure.

Disculpe se puede hacer un headliner con el mismo vinil que se tapizan los asientos o se necesita un vinil especial
Si es posible y tendría que pegarse a la tela del 'headliner' que ya tiene o a uno nuevo si se retapizó. Se recomienda dos capas de pegamento. La primera capa sirve de 'base' y después de secar bien, se tiene que pasar la segunda capa de pegamento.
El vinil no debe ser muy grueso por que puede llegar a colgarse por el peso.

El material para el cielo se llama 'dubetina' y no es otra cosa que un hule espuma de 1/4 de pulgada de grueso con su respectiva tela adherida con pegamento...esta tela la pegan en las fábricas con pistola de aplicar pegamento.
Para el método artesanal que muestro en el video pued usar el pegamento amarillo 2000

I noticed in another comment you provided the link for the glue you use, but could you tell me what tool that is that you use to smooth the fabric onto the headliner? I suppose I could use a new plastic Bondo spreader, but your tool looks to be much more efficient.

Buenas noches y despues que termina de pegar el material en el cielo cuantos dias o cuantas horas deja secar el cielo ya pegado
Con este método no tarda mucho en secarse. Es menos de una hora. Como ya he mencionado este método se debe usar solo en mucha emergencia. Lo ideal es aplicarlo con pistola, como debe ser.

I got a 06 ford f150,has a felt liner on a board. It stinks like previous owner-cigars,with burn holes. Would like to fix it,or at least take out and clean it to get rid of odor.Visor is yellow nicotine stains,too,with burn holes.

Al momento de pegar estas áreas hay que tratar de 'amoldar/acomodar' suavemente el material espumado de techo a la forma del cartón para que no quede forzado o tensionado y luego pueda despegarse.Si de todos modos queda tensionado, entonces habría que colocar unos pedazos de tela o material con cierto peso encima para ayudar a una mejor adherencia al cartón base...dejarlo mínimo una hora para que se pegue mejor.

estuve observando el video y me concentre en una parte muy importante,pregunto..es necesario aplicarle cola o pegamento por un solo lado o ambos lado o eso puede variar la cantidad o calidad de la cola quisiera salir de duda?
+Baldwin Otero La manera correcta de pegar la 'tela espumada' al cartón es aplicando pegamento a ambas superficies, luego dejar secar unos minutos y hacer la unión, por partes o de un solo tiro...el pegamento es amarillo de solvente y debe estar bien fluido para aplicarse con pistola.
El método del video es en caso no contemos con la compresora y la pistola. Sólo debemos pasar con la brocha al cartón...no pasar al hule espuma porque es muy fuerte y puede traspasar...este pegamento es liegeramente denso...la idea es aplicar al cartón en partes, aplicando una capa espesa, para que alcance a adherirse a la espuma, por eso, aplicar en partes para no permitir que se seque muy rápido y ya no surta el efecto deseado.
Si tienes posibilidades, compra una compresora, una pistola de pintar carros y el pegamento líquido especial para este trabajo.
No recomiendo los 'sprayers', no pegan parejo y pueden dejar muchas marcas...en el cartón funciona bien, pero el problema es cuando queremos aplicarlo a la espuma.

en ocasiones me ha pasado que me han quedado como unas arruguitas pequeñas , o mejor dicho, como una especie de efectos como si la espuma se hubiera aplastado más por una zona que por otra... no se si es debido a que he presionado demasiado la tela...cuando presiono suavemente la tela con la mano a la hora de pegar las dos partes...a veces me quedan esos efectos en la tela y a veces no...no se si sería bueno en las partes llanas poner pegamento solamente en el cartón-techo...

Ud. está aplicando pegamento con pistola, por consiguiente éste método requiere que ambas superficies tengan el pegamento. Trate que la aplicación sea pareja sobre las superficies. Para 'planchar' la tela he usado una almohadilla.
El pegado de un techo con pistola es el correcto. El método que muestro en el video debe ser considerado como una alternativa en caso de no tener el equipo.

Tengo una pregunta compre una maquina de doble aguja pero estan las agujas muy separadas y quiero saber si se puede modificar para que quede mas cercas las agujas y ademas no se como se puede cambiar la parte donde van las agujas por que no creo que se tenga que cambiar la varia por favor si me puede ayudar
Estas partes son kits que venden a varios anchos, pero no solo son las agujas sino son varias piezas. 1. el cubo que sostiene las 2 agujas y va sujeto a la barra. 2.En la parte de abajo tienen que cambiar un pié de presión que este tambien a la medida del ancho de las agujas. 3. El peine de arrastre y 4. La placa donde va el peine.
Con suerte puede conseguir estas piezas en un mecánico de máquinas industriales. Es un kit completo y hay de varias medidas.
Un buen tornero puede hacerle estas piezas a la medida que Ud. la ocupe.

+hoovert cruz Si tiene razón, nunca terminamos de aprender y aveces hay cositas insignificantes que pasamos por alto. Como menciono en la descripción, la manera correcta de pegar un techo de cartón es aplicando el pegamento con pistola de pintar y con el pegamento especial que es bien fluido. En cualquier momento voy a subir un video usando la manera correcta.
El método que uso en el video es opcional, en caso no contáramos con el equipo...si funciona, y nos salva de algún apuro, pero no es lo ideal.

Estimado Jhornaldo, otro material sería en tela, una imitacion gamuza o algun terciopelo...son gustos personales.
Exacto, yo estaba pensado en suede castor o gamuza terciopelo. Pero esta ultima no se daña con la goma de contacto?

+hebert damian, el pegamento amarillo es fuerte y va a resistir bien...el problema será, que con el paso del tiempo (éste no perdona) el calor del sol a través de la láminas metalicas, va a resecar el hule espuma hasta hacerlo arenoso y va a suceder otra vez lo que se vé al comienzo del video.

I only would give an opinion if I would have upholstered modern sunvisors, but I don't...I only teach some upholstery techniques off and on...only part time, sorry.

I'm glad the video was useful for you! I would recommend the application of glue by using a 'glue gun' special for this purpose. The job would be easier.
I have used this methos as an aside option in case of not having a glue gun and air compressor.
Just my 2 cents from my upholstery business but these headliners and carpet kits are really where a 5 gallon spray pot (even just a 2.5 gal or the pot that comes with the gun is huge help) of glue saves me time and makes money in spades. I stretch out the headline material over the entire board to get it centered, then peal back half the material back over itself to expose the headliner board and foam back of the new material then in about 20 seconds I have both sprayed out with glue. Let it kick off, stretch that half of the headliner material i place then fold the other half of the headliner material back over the 1st half already in place and another 20 seconds or so and you get the last half of the headliner board an material sprayed out. By doing half at a time I use the material folded back over on itself to protect from any over spray. Also by spraying the glue in a wide web I never have issues with glue bleeding thru the headliner material, plus sprayed glue kicks off way faster making less waiting to apply the material. I got the 5 gallon pot and gun at harbor freight for probably around $75 buying Chinese knock offs they sell, but it paid for itself in time saved on 1st job like this. The glue can sit in the gallon pot and hose for years and never harden, the gun keeps it sealed tight. I'd highly look into getting a setup to spray glue, just make sure the hose you use to run the glue from the pot to gun is made for chemicals, the glue will eat standard air hose, regular air line is fine for air pressure.
Hola. ¿Qué es el taquete o cuña que utiliza?
Simplemente es una espátula de plástico que ayuda a remover la grapa que sujeta las partes plásticas a la parte metálica. La idea es girar del mango hacia los lados...si se le hace un ligero corte en 'V' sería mucho mejor por que serviría de guía ya que la grapa quedaría ubicada en el centro.

Thinner? Estimado amigo, la pistola para aplicar pegamento lleva una boquilla mas grande. No necesita rebajar, el pegamento especial para aplicar con pistola ya viene listo. Aquí en Mexico, el pegamento mas conocido que usan la mayoría de tapiceros es el 'peavoch'. You don't haft to glue the headliner material only the headliner board?
If we use this artisan method, we should apply wet glue only to the cardboard...if you apply glue to the headliner material, it would soak through, the solvent based glue is very strong and immediately could cause damage to the foam. That's why, while 'ironing procedure' it should be done gently.
This method could be used in case we do not have the necessary equipment (air compressor and a spraying gun)...the glue for the spraying gun is also yellow but very fluid. If you get this equipment, then you could apply glue over both surfaces and let them dry before attaching procedure...it can be done at one go or part by part, carefully unrolling the headliner material...it should not be folded, otherwise, those folds or creases would appear on top.
aquí en Colombia en la tapicería en la que yo trabajo hace un año compararon el compresor para tapizar los techos con pistola y es muy rápido así rinde más el trabajo sabe q me gustaría ver un vídeo Haciendo un piso en caucho yo soy muy bueno haciendo pisos en alfombras pero en caucho no he podido hacerlos muy bien
+hoovert cruz Se debe usar/coser un ribete con vinilo delgado (no estirable) para sobreponer y hacer los remates en los filos de las piezas de caucho/hule que hemos cortado...le dá un bonito acabado. Tengo entendido que estos pisos ya no son muy comunes...estaban de moda en los setentas...creo que si se deben usar cuando el carro va a ser sometido a un trabajo rudo.

Ah, ya entiendo. Ud. se refiere a la 'almohadilla' de tela que uso a manera de 'planchar' el material, para evitar tocarlo con los dedos porque podría dejar marcas. Es una simple almohadilla de tela rellenada con hule espuma.

Este método si funciona, cuando no se cuenta con equipo para tapizar los cielos de los carros. Trate de conseguir en Home Depot lentes y respirador con filtro por los vapores del pegamento que son muy fuertes. El método ideal es con pistola de aplicar pegamento.

Se pega con el pegamento espeso para que se adhiera al hule espuma. Este método es como para salir del paso. La manera profesional es aplicar el pegamento con pistola sobre ambas superficies, el cartón y la espuma. Dejar secar y luego pegar.
Se puede ir pegando en partes para facilitar el proceso.
No hay peligro que se despegue asi como lo esta

Sometimes the humidity warps the board if it was made out of cardboard. If it is fiber glass there is possibility of using the same board. Anyways it would need to reupholster again.
Another idea would be buy in the junkyard another board for same model of car in good shape. It would be cheaper.

yes, buying a new board wouldn't be a problem if I new how to shape it like the old one..
I pulled it down a little bit to fix my sunroof drain tube, that's why it was soaked.. I had a leak..
After I found the tube, my hands were itching like crazy all night..
Does that mean the headliner is made out of fiberglass?
The board looks very thin with yellow foam or maybe insulator on top of it..
Getting one from a junkyard is hit & miss, but not impossible, to say the least..

+Xdreams12 Thanks for kind remarks! ...I'm using 'headliner material' ...this material consists in a 'thin 4 mm foam thoroughly glued/bonded to the 'thin grey fabric'.
The method I show should be used just in case we do not have a 'gun' to apply the 'fluid special yellow glue'.
I'll show the 'right glue gun method' in a next tutorial.

+Baldwin Otero Hola Baldwin, Me da mucho gusto que el video haya sido útil! ...Este método nos ayuda a salir del paso y si funciona...lo más fácil y rápido como menciono en el video, es aplicar el pegamento con 'pistola de pintar' a ambas superficies(espuma y cartón), dejar secar y pegar...se puede hacer el pegado completo o en partes...el pegamento para pistola, es especial, es bien líquido y viene rebajado con más solvente para que salga por la boquilla de la pistola con facilidad...el pegado es mas parejo...en un siguiente tutorial haremos esta demostración.

+miguel angel miralles Lo que pasa es que las marcas son diferentes en cada país...no se donde te encuentres...si estás en Mexico, el pegamento/cemento de contacto amarillo que se usa para tapicería es el 5000, 2000, 3080 y otros como el que se usa para pegar la formica en carpintería y se llama 'weldwood' y se compra en las madereras y en el Home Depot(una tienda super grande)

@@Cechaflo that glue is so very yellow colored, so it must be the wildwood landau high temp contact glue, not the regular contact glue you gave a link for.
@@JimTMcDaniels1 The glue I have showed in this video is a 'brushable one' and it is only applied on cardboard surface. This method with this kind of glue is an option in case of not having the equipment to do it correctly.
The correct way is by using an air compressor and a glue sprayer. For this purpose the glue should be very fluid. In min three:16 of rthis video I used the sprayable glue (another trade mark than landau)

A faster and better way to do a headliner is by using a 'glue spray gun' with air compressor. I have used this method in the video for the case we do not have the equipment.

+Fanny Diaz Gracias por ver los videos! ...si se puede usar cuero/piel para el cielo interior...un estilo que usan mucho los tapiceros es coser el cuero a una espuma/foam de 1/4" que tenga su tela de refuerzo/backing ...luego se le cose muchos rombos...este acolchonado de rombos se pegará al cartón.
+Fanny Diaz Me olvidaba esta sugerencia: Si desea tapizar el cartón sólamente en cuero, sin costuras, entonces es recomendable tapizar/pegar este cuero sobre el material (tela con espuma) que ya lleva el cartón...este material sirve de base...no se recomienda pegar directamente al cartón porque todos los desperfectos que pueda tener el cartón se reflejarían en el cuero por encima en su vista principal.

@@Cechaflo is this what you would recommend here in the U.S.? I live here in the midwest so it gets HOT. Do I just brush this glue on with a bristle brush? One or two coats over the headliner board?
@@ddemier The method I show in this video is optional in case of not having a glue spraying gun. One coat as a base over the board. Goggles and respirator mask is a must.
The common way upholsterers do a headliner board is by using a glue spraying gun and apply even coats of glue over both surfaces, let them dry and stick together.

@@Cechaflo will Weldwood Dap 00272 work ok? The Laundau only comes in a 1gallon container. The Weldwood 00272 comes in 1 qt which I think would be plenty for a 2007 Saturn Ion sedan headliner

+Eero Laukkanen For this procedure is not necessary to let it dry...it should be immediately stuck to the cardborad in a soft way...be careful to not press it too much with your fingers.

What I can't understand is why it took him so long I knocked out five or six headliners in one day and I definitely don't use a paintbrush that's just a lot more time consuming than need be. While this video is informative doing it this way will take you way longer than necessary
