A great WWII book is The Forgotten Soldier by Guy Sajer. Guy was french but drafted into the German Army (his mother was german descent) and fought on the eastern front. The book is incredible.

Never heard of him, neat, interesting to hear about foreign soldiers who fought for the germans, I read some things about French ss 'charlemagne' defending Berlin... I remember leon degrelle fighting at korsun but I think he might have been Belgian not French... I heard a cool story that there was a Korean conscripted by occupying Japanese and put in kwangtung army; he was captured by Soviets during prewar border battles around Mongolia/ manchukuo and pressed into red army; he was captured by germans after barbarossa and either pressed into service or volunteered to escape harsh captivity; he ended up captured by Americans along with 2nd raters and other non germans defending Atlantic wall; dont remember if he wrote memoirs but online friends mentioned him so the story is out there somewhere

When Savage gets captured and the mortars start raining down. When he says the Krouts hit the deck and Savage grabs the burp gun and starts spraying like hell, then they run away. That’s one of the most BAD ASS things I’ve heard on the podcast so far.

As an April 1st joke can Jocko read a children's book? Dr. Seuss? Or something similar. "Yeah right here the Cat is taking ownership of this situation with the kids. He's got his hat and a rash guard. He's leading up and down the chain of command and getting AFTER IT. Legit!"

Hi Jocko, this podcast inspired me to buy the whole audiobook. Compared to you, the narrator sounds like he's reading a fairy tale, and it really undermines the sense of urgency, stress, and terror.
It's a much more visceral experience hearing you read it, and it's great to hear your insight. I think you have a lot to offer as a narrator for veterans' audiobooks.
You do a much better job than Tristan Morris (the Audible narrator), who for obvious reasons can't put himself in the shoes of soldiers nearly as well as you can.
Edit: His narrations are mostly fiction and he won an award for his reading of "Nine women, one dress".

Greetings Jocko and Echo, currently listening to this podcast, always waiting for their releases. i messaged on twitter, with a book recomendation, but maybe it flied by all the other comments. I would really recommend you to read "The Gulad Archipelago" by Alexander Solzhenisten, you will get your share of human nature in that book and the importance of freedom.
Thank you for the podcasts! All the best

Never read actual book but heard / read parts and excerpts, mainly because the book is so long, and although it's obviously based on the actual gulag and shows what the stalinist system was like, I can't seem to get into fiction unless it's short, i can only read very long texts if its non fiction, i tried getting into dostoyevsky and Tolstoy novels but can't put that much time in if its fiction just a quirk of mine I suppose, I dont know... I did read arthur kostler 'darkness at noon' which is [I hear] similar but easier to get through

the gravity of war and everything that occurs in it, the bravery and heroism, the cowardice and villainy, the loyal sacrifice and selfish betrayal, is always colossal in signicance, for better or worse. You can be sure that whatever occurs in war will live forever in glory or infamy; it will not be mundane or unremarkable

I mean it sucks to be the infantry that is left behind but it makes no sense sending the tanks out to get destroyed with them. Battalion would have known more about what was going on, it was a lost front, why commit more resources to it? Again, sucks to be that front.
