@Jocko, Frank Bifulk was my grandfather. One thing he never talked about was his time in Korea. Just the fact that he was there, and a Marine. Thank you.
Is he still alive? It'd be outstanding if he were able to do an interview with Jocko, I can't imagine how honored Jocko would be to speak with your grandfather as well. He responds to requests for interviews on twitter very well.
@kevinh9110 no he is not. He passed away December 26th in 2007. He lost a fight to cancer at 79. He is with the Lord now. He was a hard working blue collar man. He built houses and worked for the city.
Currently reading 'Give Me Tomorrow', It's about George company from 3rd battalion 1 Marine regiment and their drive through Inchon, Seoul, and to their stand at Chosin Reservoir. I am really loving these Korean War books. Keep up the great Echo & Jocko!
The final message is very powerful. The greatest obstacle in our comfortable lives is barely a single percentile of the horrors and hardships these men had to overcome. Every goal in our lives is miniscule compared to the insurmountable odds they overcame.
Was reading a bit more on Lt. Lee after this podcast. Guy is a legend; it was interesting how his brave attitude was somewhat spurred on by his determination to prove that Chinese Americans weren't the weak stereotype that he believed existed in the US at the time.
*That DID exist. And exists now among uneducated or presumptuous people. Other Marines serving with him felt he deserved MOH too. Well, just a medal anyway.

Kevin Zhang A damn shame he was never awarded it in this civilian's opinion.
@ Who knows, a family member or teammate could bring it up again and his citation could be reconsidered. Like Nix Cheque who charged at the enemy,, in their direct line of fire, and gave the ultimate sacrifice. Those citation "promotions" have happened before.
US Marine General Oliver Prince Smith ( Berkeley Class of 1916) was a true Hero. During the Korean War. He saved 15000 US Marines. There is a story about him on TH-cam. There was pressure to rush North against a bunch of so called chinese laundrymen. Instead he strategically set up the airfields, and set up defenses on the way North. Many think he is the most underrated General in US History. My dad was a Marine in Korea. Thank God General for OP Smith.
Marine units often have what we called "pioneer gear".. Picks, Shovels, Spades and Axes. It probably was a regular or maybe a 2 headed ax, not some huge lord of the rings thing
53th podcast and I am going to listen to every single one of them. Great book, great messages.... especially the testament to human will. Let this be a great privilage to learn from war, but I hope for all of you you never experiance war. Thank you Jocko for this effort!
Another outstanding Podcast - Thank you. Your comments on the brutal cold reminds me of a saying a platoon leader in my company used to say whenever someone complained about being cold: "Unless you think you are going to die, it is not cold."
Just an epic read - just epic. My wife's Granddad (age 93!) served in Europe (104th Infantry Division) and I wish he could hear your reading. Just great stuff.
My Dad was adopted in 1953. I just found out the reason he was put up was the parents weren’t married yet and both came from very devout Catholic families. They couldn’t get married because the father was in Korea and the mother was stateside and they had let their passions get the better of them on Liberty. Did some research and this man was a Pfc. at the time in the 1st Batallion, 1st Marines and fought at Inchon and Chosin. His MOS was 0311. They got married as soon as got out and had two more kids.
They fought and died for freedom, so as long as people burn flags they bought themselves instead of mine, I don’t let it get to me. My dad who fought in Vietnam taught me that.
I listened to this and the Puller episodes to give me some idea what my Dad went through in Korea. No wonder he left part of his soul there. RIP those old souldiers.
While in boot camp at Paris Island we were able to eat lunch with Marines that were some of the Chosin Frozen. Awesome guys just wish we could have gotten their names. Nov. of 1987. Semper Fi Marines!!
I listened to this 3 times twice on iTunes and here on TH-cam and watching you read and talk is always so much better!! You should go live it always uploads to TH-cam anyway
Absolutely and there are a few good books about the travesty of upper echelon leadership that led to the horrible events involving the Army units on the eastern side of the reservoir. Sad, tragic, heroic stuff. Those guys got screwed and that is coming from a Marine. Poor leadership & support.
Giving this episode a second listen... 62 lbs and 80 lbs kettlebells, a pull-up bar, a Jocko podcast, in a 39 degree garage gym... no comfort sought...
My go-to episode when i feel soft and lose that perspective of how good i truly have it. If these men of rifle company can withstand these conditions, then i can surely see that my circumstances right now are nill in comparison.
Everytime I hear one of these Korean War stories I wonder "where are the tanks, where are the flamethrowers, where is the air support, where are the BAR men in the squads? During the war in Pacific the Army and the Marines had all those things and now none of it?" 🙅🇺🇲
On my second tour through Jockos' podcasts and it just gets better! I can just see Jocko pulling a Colonel Walter E Kurtz (Apocalypse Now) in training. Thank you for reminding me of those who gave everything for me!
Excellent podcast. Glad I'm catching up on the backlog of these. It seems the Korean war doesn't get talked about as much as almost any other war. I believe chasm is pronounced with a hard C, not Ch.
One of my grandfathers served as a marine in Korea, he never talked much about it, just mentioned it was extremely cold, and he saw lots of Chinese pla soldiers used like cannon fodder in wave attacks, and he pissed on and dumped water on heavy machine guns because they were overheated... turns out he was at or near chosen when the Chinese pushed back but we didn't know that til after he died, my grandmother told us he had nightmares that caused him to wake up sweating in the middle of the night... I can see why he didn't want to talk about it... he kept an old ammo box from the machine gun that my dad still has
Jocko, can you do a series on the Chinese or North Korean perspective on the war. I'm sure there were Chinese or NK servicemen that wrote books on their experiences in the war.
'Howitzers....big bombs that come from the sky.....' Yep, sounds pretty accurate to me. Keep up the excellent podcasts Jocko and Echo. Id love to know the back story on how 'supporch' became a thing
I just looked at a satellite image of Yudam-Ni. 145 buildings standing. 1 group of buildings look like a prison with a perimeter wall or fence and 3 buildings that form a "U" in the center with some other buildings surrounding.
Will you be going through A Rumor Of War? As a new listener not sure if you have covered the vietnam war or if you have covered PTSD. Just curious because I remember this being a powerful book in my understanding about the effects of war.
At 1:25:44 General MacArthur running the war from Japan was a great insult to the South Koreans. The Japanese were the direct cause of the division between Korea. Couple that with a decades long brutal occupation and annexation of the peninsula.
I have no idea if you guys read the comments here but you should definitely invest in pop filters for you microphones. That would give a huge production quality boost to already an excellent podcast. Cheers.
Lmao my boyfriend uses the alarm and my first time hearing it I woke up ready to fight! “Who the fuck are you?! Bring it on! “ have him stop me from jumping to nothing

Jocko should pursue a career as a narrator for audio books
+1
he could definitely make a few bucks narrating war books
Wonder if it's lucrative enough
tricepsish
yolo
tricepsish Jocko wouldn’t pursue a narrating career.. a narrating career would pursue Jocko.

This was the first Jocko Podcast I ever listened to. I've been a loyal listener ever since.
The best years of my life were spent as a Marine Corps 60mm mortatman! SEMPER FI gents!

I was a Corpsman who served with 3rd Battalion 11th Marines 1st Mar Div. Outstanding unit!
Thank you for your service, sir
Bedtime stories for men
I already fall asleep to the podcast.
Glad I’m not the only one

"Those Bastards, Those Magnificent Bastards."
It's a damn shame that people these days protest the flag and anthem that these men fought and died for. Makes me sick.
The flag my fellow service members fought and died for represents the right to disrespect anything without legal repercussions.
That's true but history repeats itself think of how native people who have pride in their way of life

2:12 Battle Ax! Get some !!!
Where can I find these supplements Echo is talking about having a bunch of crushed up ephedra in it?

Good evening Echo, Jacko, and ALL ALPHA MEN in the comment section! 😎💪

Good morning.
That's Marine Will Jocko when they fall into ranks. Not Human Will.
Good Evening? it looks like the middle of the day outside
Jocko should write cards hallmark. With a little speaker where he narrates it.
Glad to hear about a Marine that didnt shit all over the Army for what happened East of Chosin
Lee should have been known as the Chesty Puller of his generation and probably was in the Marine Corps. Get his Medal of Honor approved!
This one cuts to the core, as it should.
