In the last video we met 6 living former monarchs who chose to retire, hand their thrones to their children and enjoy their golden years. But not all living former monarchs chose to get off the throne, some were pushed off. In the 20th century, 28 national-level monarchies across the world were abolished. Their former sovereigns were downgraded, exiled or even executed. As the majority of these revolutions and coups happened in the first half of the century, few ex monarchs are still alive today. Their children and grandchildren carry on defunct royal dynastic lines and, if they’re lucky, enjoy what’s left of their ancestors’ glory, palaces, and fortunes. Today there are only 4 living former monarchs who lost their thrones when their monarchies were abolished. All of their reigns ended and one began in bloodshed. And one managed to return to his former Kingdom and be democratically elected Prime minister. Let’s meet them!
Jamshid bin Abdullah, Former Sultan of Zanzibar
Simeon II, Former Tsar of Bulgaria
    Gyanendra, Former King of Nepal
Fuad II, Former King of Egypt and the Sudan

Simeon II’s story is just the most fascinating to me. The last man alive to have borne the title of Tsar. Exiled from his land as a boy, he became a successful businessman in Western Europe.
Then communism falls in Bulgaria and Simeon returns. I read that the reason people elected him Prime Minister was that even though he was a former royal, they saw him as an ultimate example of success and integration with Europe, which they wanted to emulate. Under his government, Bulgaria joined NATO and began the process of assent to the European Union. He wasn’t a perfect leader, and he only served one term, but his story is still fascinating. It almost reminds me of the legend of Princess Anastasia, and what may have happened had she actually survived.

About 20 yrs ago, I was in a women's chorus that performed songs from Eastern Europe (Bulgaria and Croatia mostly). At that time (1993), Simeon II was in Los Angeles to accept a posthumous award from a very large Jewish temple out here in recognition of the brave work that his father (Boris) had done to save Bulgarian Jews from the Nazi death camps by claiming they were a much needed workforce. My group was invited to sing at the awards presentation and we, being American -- not one us Bulgarian -- were very nervous because we knew that Simeon would know if we sounded authentic or way too much American. I remember that he was very gracious and complimented our singing, saying it reminded him of Sofia (capital of Bulgaria). I still have a photograph of the group standing around Simeon.

A very good video idea, I think it would be very interesting and quite a diverse list in terms of present activities, as I believe in countries like Romania the royals are still quite respected and live in palaces and do engagements while in places like Greece the would be royals aren't very well liked by the government.

It would be a good video but VERY long, especially when you consider how many of these monarchies have competing claimants (Russia has at least 3, both Two Sicilies and Italy have two, France has 3, etc) Then you'd have to determine the scope of which monarchies are covered--there are so many German monarchies aside from just the Hohenzollerns, for example.

Simeon's story is bizarre. How can you get elected and serve as Prime Minister of a government you believe is illegimate? You missed some things about Nepalese monarchy.
The monarch of Nepal was the head of the government in name. Since 1806, the powers of the monarch had been restricted by the prime minister (the position was hereditary & was continuously held by the Jungbahadur Rana family, a family of feudal lords). The rule of the Ranas was of a completely autocratic nature. In 1950, King Tribhuvana tried to change the status quo, which earned the displeasure of the prime minister, who had the king deposed. However the people revolted against the Rana rule, resulting in Tribhuvana becoming a constitutional monarch with the prime minister now being chosen by an elected parliament. Sensing the general chaos in the country, King Mahendra orchestrated a coup in 1957, abolished political parties & instituted a partyless democracy in which he exerted a significant power. King Birendra allowed political parties to be reformed in 1980s & reduced the monarch's power.

The reason why Nepal's king is trying to regain his throne is due to liability to his ancesters. But when it comes to privilege and luxury he has influence and wealth enough for his upcoming generation. So him being king or not won't affect his lifestyle at all.

That prince of Nepal didn't shoot himself after killing his family. Palace guards shot him. He lasted a day and a half as king, mostly on life support in hospital.
When the last king and queen of Nepal were forced out, story is his grandfather's 98 year old former concubine was allowed to stay in the palace.
King Constantine of Greece tried a counter coup after the junta seized power in 1967. In 1973 the junta held a referendum to abolish the monarchy, which passed but wasn't seen as legitimate. Another referendum was held in 1974 after civilian government returned, and it also passed.

There is a Nepalese Hindu right-wing party called Rastriya Prajatantra Party (translated to mean 'National Democratic Party') that supports bringing back the monarchy in Nepal. Certain people within the ruling Indian Hindu right-wing BJP party (which had opposed the abolition of the world's only sovereign Hindu monarchy by Maiost insurgent-turned politicians & the subsequent secularisation of the country) also support bringing back Gyanendra to power.

      @anubratabit3027 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +22

@@Limegreenedragon No it was Yogi Adityanath who opposed abolition of Nepalese monarchy. King Mahendra, who assumed extensive political power through a coup in 1957 with the support of the army, by dissolving the parliament & suppressing democracy, had made Hinduism the state religion & the laws promulgated by him were exclusively derived from Hindu religious texts. The government was prohibited from executing Brahmins irrespective of their crimes until 1964 when a Madhesi Brahmin pro-democracy activist tried to assassinate the king at Janakpur. Similarly Brahmins & Hindu religious institutions were completely exempted from being taxed by the government. As Gorakhnath is the tutelary deity of the Gorkhas, the Gorakhnath Math of Gorakhpur wielded a large amount of influence in the Gorkha society, so did its mahants who were actively involved in Indian politics (Digvijayanath was a hardliner leader of the Hindu Mahasabha, one of the conspirators in the assassination of Gandhi & was the MP from Gorakhpur in 1967-1970. Avaidyanath was actively involved in the Ram Janmabhumi movement & a 2-time MP from Gorakhpur, first in 1970-1971 & then in 1989-1998). So the secularisation of Nepal in the aftermath of the monarchy's abolition causing loss of the Math's influence in the country is not viewed positively by Yogi Adityanath.

I don't remember who came first (could have been Michael of Romania), but I recall Simeon II placing a firm last because his family was seen as a German imposition on Bulgaria. Regarding the Nepalese’ lose canon prince who massacred his own family, when he was a teen, he caused the official Kumari of Patan (a living goddess in a form of a pre-pubescent girl) to be dethroned because she looked old. It was against the living goddess’s will. It is said that a Kumari loses her goddess status when she begins menstruating but Dhana Kumari Bajracharya never menstruation never came until now so her removal was highly controversial, although her long reign was also very unusual. It was also said that due to the royal family’s sin (particularly the loose screw prince) for removing the Kumari, they were going to suffer bad karma and losses. So some people actually believe in the connection to the removal of the official Kumari.
    Strange facts:
    1. That longest serving Kumari had been predicted to come around as a somewhat lifelong serving Kumari even before she became one. After she became a Kumari, for some reason she never begin menstruating so she remained the official Kumari for 3 decades before she was removed.
    2. She began life as a Kumari at age 2! That was her whole life and for all she knew, she’s a goddess.
    2. Despite no longer serving as an official Kumari of the city of Patan, since she never start menstruating (unknown if it’s due to health matter or if she used some kind of mental power) she still serves as a Kumari in her district area, albeit from her family home.
    3. As a Kumari (living goddess) Dhana Kumari Bajracharya NEVER had her feet touching the ground from the time that she became a goddess. However, their family astrologer predicted that she will finally had to walk on the ground (instead of being carried in a decorated carriage) by 2015. In April 2015, the unfortunate earthquake incident occurred in Nepal thus the prediction came true when she was forced to walk on the ground as a longest living Kumari in the street for the first time ever in her life at age 63, due safety reasons.
    4. Before the incident of the royal massacre, the current official Kumari of that time (the one who replaced the older Kumari) had a sudden sorrow “attack” and despite usually not depicting any emotion, she cried. That was the only time that she cried as a Kumari. Then the massacre happened.

Um what did the panchayat system do that was soo reformatory? All he did was build infrastructure which is great but infrastructure doesn't always equal development. The people weren't liberated, they didn't have their rights. They were led to believe that being ruled by an autocratic monarchy which didn't provide them any rights or any freedom was good for them and subsequently for the country. I whole heartedly believe that bringing back an outdated system of monarchy will just worsen our already critical economic situation. We should be fighting for reform within the democratic system that our fore-fathers fought and gave their life for. Encouraging educated youths to be politically active, establishing an entrance exam system to select the best well-educated candidates to lead our country instead of old and morally corrupt people. This is the change that we should be striving for and not uprooting the current system.

Nepalese people value democracy and their rights. Just because a system worked doesn't guarantee that it would work again. At least with democracy the general people have the power to remove the political leaders that they dislike. But if we re-establish a system like the panchayat system and put gyanendra incharge if he proves himself to be an incapable and power hungry ruler (which he has a history of) then what? Are we again going to fight another long battle to end that system and again the process continues. Do we really wanna go round in circles changing and reshaping the political landscape of the country over and over again. I believe that we have to be patient and work towards a better democratic system.

Constantine II was NOT overthrown by a military coup in 1973. The regime of the colonels was installed by a coup in 1967. Following the King's attempted counter-coup he fled abroad. Following an attempt by the Greek navy to overthrow the Junta in 1973, the Junta deposed Constantine, set up a republic and held a dubious referendum to abolish the monarchy. The Junta leader was deposed later that year in a military coup. Democracy was re-established in 1974. A more legitimate referendum on the monarchy and it confirmed Constantine's deposition.
So, Constantine II wasn't deposed by a coup. He was deposed by the existing coup-leaders who had been in power since 1967. The successful 1973 coup occurred after the abolition of the monarchy and didn't cause it.

No it is not proved that the monarch of Nepal were killed by their own prince .As a matter of fact there are many incidence which suggest it was political coup rather than internal family conflict

King Constantine II fled Greece in December 1967 after a failed counter coup against the military government of the Colonels who had seized power via a coup earlier in the year. Constantine was deposed by the military in 1973. A sham referendum was also held that year to abolish the monarchy. In 1974 the military regime was overthrown and a so-called democratic government was the result. The 1952 democratic constitution was not restored meaning the monarchy was not restored. A referendum on whether Greece would remain a monarchy was held. King Constantine was not allowed to return to the country. He was only allowed to make a broadcast from exile in London to plead his case. The referendum resulted in the formal abolition of the monarchy. He died in January 2013 and was buried in the royal buried grounds near Tatoi Palace. He had been stripped of his Greek citizenship years earlier and was considered a Danish citizen. Under EU law that allowed him to return to Greece as an EU citizen. The Greek government had stolen his property along with his citizenship. This meant he lost ownership of the Tatoi royal palace. The King appealed to the European Court of Human Rights which ordered the Greek government to pay him compensation. They paid out of an emergency fund to aid with natural disasters. The King along with his Queen established the Anna-Maria Foundation to aid natural disasters in Greece. Many European monarchies sent represntatives to the funeral of King Constitution. The Greek government refused to give the former King a state funeral.

Interesting how some folks would wholeheartedly reelecting again the de-throned prince as their representatives. It shows that people are open; and if one have quality as a leader... They could try to win people's heart. It is fair and square

Devayani is not lower class , she is from aristocratic Rana Family. she is daughter of Pashupati Shamsher JBR, ex minister (secretly multi millionaire) who is descendant of Juddha Sumsher, her mother is from royal family "Scindia" of Gwalior in India.
Queen Aishwarya didn't like Devyayani as she was descendant of PM Juddha Shamsher.
