I love how the American title "Godzilla vs The Thing" made it look like he was gonna fight a hideous monster. But nope, it was a cute giant month.
You mean mothra
The italian posters revealed 'the thing' design tho
I wonder why mothra is cute but a hellish freak to godzilla
The first american godzilla was the 1998 godzilla shaped like t rex
Month or Moth?
When I was younger I would always try to show my friends these movies, and people treated me like I was weird for liking these old films that don’t even “look real”. I would usually try to explain that they were working with limited technology of the time and that if you look closely you can see some real craftsmanship even if it’s not perfectly replicating reality, but they didn’t care to listen. People don’t want to suspend their disbelief, they want the movie to do all the work for them. I credit these films with encouraging me to use my imagination. Nowadays I’ve given up on trying to sell these films to people who don’t get it. It’s like jazz, if you have to have it explained to you, you’re never going to enjoy it.
No need to explain to a real fan. Love this!
I know the feel, I talk to some friends at school and they say " there dumb, it's fake, and they like godzilla 1998 better and the movie came out at the time. I was 8 years old.
Amen! All the Gojira films are works of timeless and beautiful art!
Very true. Same here I always tried to explain to some of my friends and family but they are not open mind and watch movies. They think it too funny and old movies. At less those people who work their ass off in those classic Godzilla movies than using too much CGI today. Yeah don’t waste your breath to explain to your friends who don’t open mind just keep to yourself and talk with real Godzilla fans.
I know exactly what you mean. My friends have never gotten it either, but luckily I was able to convert one of them!
Mothra shows up half empty on strength, proceeds to knock and drag Godzilla around. Dodges an attack, bites and scratches him, and then tries to poison him. Then the babies later on toy with him, tie him up, and embarrass him. Mothra really shined in this movie.
The one larvae took a major Godzilla tail beating that she must have died as soon as she and her twin larvae arrived on Mothra Island, so the larvae won but at a cost.

Given how hard Mothra fights in this battle (she is able to blow Godzilla off balance and then drag him several hundred meters/yards from her egg) even though she is dying and knows it shows how powerful and resilient she is. Had she been in her prime, I think she would have won this fight. What do the rest of you think?
Indeed, definitely I believe so, she was basically at almost empty strength wise and she gave a great battle, her wings alone can knock Godzilla, at full strength, yeah, she would have won, she is one of only two monsters in the classic series that Godzilla lost to, the other of course was King Kong, other than those two, Godzilla never lost a fight to a monster in a full on battle to the finish.
Mothra is definitely stronger than Godzilla, she still beat him after all through her spawn!
He got lucky that they fought when she was already past her prime at this point in her life cycle. But even then, idk that Mothra wins through brute strength in the same way Godzilla does.
She's a mother and beats Godzilla how a mother would: by having babies who kick his ass!
Dont care.

one of the very best from the Showa era. love the music, unmistakable sound, nothing will ever sound better, and Godzilla's eyes. this was his best look until 1991's Godzilla vs King Ghidorah.
The late 50s and early 60s was the golden age for TOHO. It brought some of the best tokusatsu films to ever be made.

After the original Gojira, I think this is when the Showa era of Godzilla was at the top of its game.
While I love the entirety of the Showa era, 62-68 was the golden era of Toho Daikaiju cinema. The Mechagodzilla duloagy is also of the same quality in my opinion.
@@ayrahn7893 and from 71-75 those were a bit sadistic, like revealing bloods
I agree.....even after all these years, Mothra vs. Godzilla 64 is the best G-sequel.
I felt Mothra was their best creation. To pit her against there most successful character was a no brainer and still the best Kaiju film ever. Mood, action, drama, weirdness, the best.
@@thomasbeall9069 It's the best G-sequel. For me, the 1954 original is still the best because of its somber, bleak tone.
One of the best fight scenes in any Godzilla movie considering that it shows Godzilla confronting and fighting Mothra! Add to the fact that this fight scene was in their first movie together makes this fight scene even more iconic and unforgettable!
Watching Mothra fight and ultimately sacrifice herself to save her children actually makes me pretty emotional. She uses her last bit of strength to fly away from Godzilla and die beside her egg. Yeah it’s a puppet moth, but you can’t tell me Tsuburaya doesn’t absolutely nail desperate mother in the way Mothra looks, sounds, and moves. It’s really top tier.
Thank you, TCM, for selecting Godzilla as Monster of the month!!! Thank you for realizing the brilliance of these films, including the wonderful work of Tsuburaya with the effects, Ifukube with the score and of course, Ishiro Honda as the director of many of the great films. I grew up with these wonderful masterpieces and yes, many are indeed masterpieces. These films created their own genre and birthed the true "King of the Monsters" and a pop culture Icon that is as popular today as at anytime in his glorious history! Thanks again...just another reason I love TCM!!! Sincerely, Hugh Phillips.
I like how menacing Godzilla looks in the film! The fight was pretty well done for the time too! It's a guy in a rubber suit VS a puppet, and it's impressive, what they were able to pull off!
No matter how unreal they look, there's something really cool about these old movies.
Am i the one who think that Mothra's special effect's have aged kinda well?
She looks good but I feel the puppet from her debut film looked better overall. I do like the yellowish, almost dirty hue to her that was kind of lost with later incarnations.
Her wings are actually super convincing if you've ever watched a moth
1:20 I love how Godzilla is so agitated by her wind he blows his heat beam
Sound Effects guy: How many times do you want Mothra to screech during this fight?
Ishiro Honda: *Yes*
Practical effects is becoming a dying artform. I just love watching these movies made it the 50s-70s
I agree. If I ever get the chance to work on a _Godzilla_ film, I'm finna stipulate that there needs to be a balance between the practical effects and the CGI.

I saw this in the theater when I was a kid. It never occurred to me to ask how Mothra managed to lay an egg almost as big as she is.
But come to think of it… How DID Mothra manage to lay an egg almost as big as she is?
The egg was probably smaller when she laid it
Ever heard of Kiwis?
Don't let little details like that you're fun.
In Rebirth of Mothra 1,
Heisei parent mothra
in the beginning of the movie shows her scale dusts being released from her abdomen and forming an Egg
Since she's a mystical kaiju it makes sense
But this mothra 1964 is a bit diffrent. she doesn't have her beams and only attacks using her wings and claws
This might be the realistic version of mothra cuz she doesn't have beams in this unlike her other incarnations
ALSO in GKOTM2019 at the credits scene, there's a picture of mothra's egg (she laid her egg somewhere offscreen)
And since both Titanus larva and Titanus mothra are 50 ft tall and the egg is massive, her laying eggs *probably* works like kiwis which is.. kinda disturbing. We didn't see much of her which sucks cuz she's my fav kaiju

Speaking of the original roar, if you listen carefully you can also hear what would later be Varan, Baragon and Gorosaurus roar.
I love the roar as well. Unfortunately the last time that roar was used was in Godzilla vs. Monster Zero.
Very sad, knowing what comes next, after giving all her strength to push back against a brute. And Ifukube's music sells it.
And this history between them, even if not in the same universe, makes her final action in KOTM all the more poignant.
Nevertheless, she persisted...

To me, MosuGoji is the definitive Showa Godzilla incarnation for two reasons. 1: His design is easily the most menacing and probably has the most epic entrances of all, rising from the ground. And 2: Every scene he is in gets to show just how indestructible he really is. I mean they try everything and it doesn’t even phase him.

Considering they did this with hard effects--wires, a man in a rubber suit, miniatures--I'm surprised it's stood up as well as it has over the decades. Sure, it's fake, but the expression on Godzilla's face at the beginning--dumb, brutish force--and the actions of the stunt performers...they come off as having personalities, and with a kaiju flick, that's very hard to do. Probably Ishiro Honda's best Godzilla movie. Good acting for its type, very good special effects for the day, excellent music, and Mothra is one badass to the bone mama you do NOT want to mess with!
