Thanks for a wonderful review, Juan! I have read two stories from this group. The one I had read a long time ago was Monte Vérita. I remember being absolutely gripped and haunted by it. I read it at night and I remember staying up all night, not being able to get it out of my mind. I certainly want to read it again. The other one I read about a month ago was The Apple Tree. I did not fully appreciate it until your review today. Your psychoanalytic background and interpretation of the story made me see it in a completely new light, and now I appreciate the whole meaning of the story and understand the symbolism and mind projection of the protagonist. So revealing! I look forward to reading the others.
One of her other astounding short stories for me is Not After Midnight which I read in a different du Maurier short story collection. I recommend it very highly. It was this story that made me realize the similar themes and eerie undercurrents that are common in Daphne du Maurier's short stories and those of the almost overlooked writer, Robert Aickman.

Jason Metzker thank you for your comment Jason! I am definitely going to pick up the collection Don’t Look Now which includes Not after Midnight.
Oh I’m very interested in reading Robert Aickman! What would you recommend?

Just Juan Reader I can remember reading single stories from a collection of mixed authors. He only wrote short stories. I have read and " enjoyed" The Swords, Ravissante, and The Wine-Dark Sea.

Just Juan Reader As a suggestion for a book of his short stories I would say try "Cold Hand in Mine" which contains some of his more well-known stories, most of which I have yet to read.

Thank you so much for your review/analysis.
My collection has five stories: The Birds, The Old Man, The Apple Tree, The Archduchess and The Blue Lenses.
I have just read The Apple Tree and loved it, then I was looking for a video about the story and found yours. And I absolutely loved it.
Your comments about the stories are very detailed and interesting, even your facial expressions tells a lot about it hahaha
I'm quite sad because my collection doesn't have Monte Verita but instead I'm glad that has The Blue Lenses, that is very well-spoken in the comments here.
Also your book cover is dope! I wish mine was like that.
By the way, I'm Brazilian and found this book in a old/used book store and I'm reading in English to practice the language while enjoy the story.

I love the way your whole face lights up when you review something you love. The Birds was my favorite movie when I was a child. I have watched it so many times but I have never read the story. It sounds like I need to remedy that.

What a ringing, fabulous review!! I’m definitely reading this! The only of hers I’ve read is Rebecca but it was a long time ago and I should reread it; but I remember liking it at the time. I remember the Gothic images it conjured for me and the mad darkness of the mind it created in me more than the story or language themselves!

I love her work too. I've read these stories, but this makes me want to reread them. Don't Look Now is an interesting film adaptation.

Thank you so much for this review. I wanted to press the 👍throughout your chat. Although Rebecca is one of my favorite books, i have not read her other works. Your descriptions were the catalyst I needed. Before your video was over I was ordering my copy online.

Yes! Monte Verita is my favorite too. I reread passages over and over again just to make sure I was understanding what I was reading. This short story is nothing short of brilliant.

Juan - There is a new "biography" of Daphne du Maurier. It is called "Daphne du Maurier: Looking Inward" by Teresa Petersen. Petersen has gone through du Maurier's biographies, personal papers and all of her works and this book is her argument that there is a thread of incest in everything she wrote. I haven't read the book yet (but I do have a copy), and I think this is something you might be interested from a psychoanalyst perspective.

Same thing happened to me throughout that particular story, I had to reread several passages just to reassure myself of what was going on. It is such a weird, magical, and kind of terrifying story. One of my new favorites

I have a collection I can't locate. It contains "The Blue Lenses" and "The Lordly Ones." There is one that takes place in Venice in which a man is seduced by an adolescent waiter and his older cohorts, and is then blackmailed. There is an audiobook version of the Little Photographer which I plan to listen to. From what you say she may be like Rebecca.

i find "The Birds" lacking anything beyond its theme of All Bird Species attacking All of Humanity... It provides no explanation of how and why the Birds came to unite against Mankind... And it provides no conclusion to the premise... Now I have seen where the story may have been influenced by a dream/nightmare regarding Birds vs Man, and following what happens with dreams/nightmares, the story is deliberately written with no conclusion because none was dreamt...

Masculinity is a real thing, and protecting your family is arguably the most important ingredient of it. Just want you to know that you shouldn't feel obligated to dance around the subject to be politically correct.
