I happened to buy this book last weekend. Shirley Jackson is a legend.

I have always just bumped into Shirley Jackson. Often I'll be just reading, and I'll think "That's a great short story." Then I will go back, and check the author. It's Shirley Jackson. I Ms. Jackson son talk about her. She would have her son read the her work. He said, "I just humored my mom. I never got her stories." That's must have been what it was like for women back then. Alone, and lonely in marriage, while she wrote.

I big puffy heart love Jackson. I first read The Lottery in highschool and fell in love. I didn't understand why my classmates didn't like the story. I also love Life Among Savages and Raising Demons.

I would compare her subtle style of fantasy and horror to Charles Beaumont or Mildred Clingerman (the latter not a Penguin Classic, alas!) But still all three writers are originals.

I'm hanging on to We Have Always Lived in the Castle for Horror MAYhem. I'll dig through my antholigies now to see if I can find one of her shorter short stories.

What a gorgeous cover! There’s nothing more frightening than normality in Shirley Jackson land. She sucker punches me every time.

I remember reading The Lottery in junior high school 54 years ago. A story like that sticks with you.

Reading this at the moment, about half way through and thoroughly enjoying.

Unsettling indeed. Thanks for the reminder to read more Shirley Jackson. Her short stories always have that sting. The Summer People is a good example of that. Awesome video!

Totally agree, that’s a fantastic collection. I think I like her short fiction more than her novels. She just nails it every time

Shirley Jackson is something else. I narrated The Lottery last year. I don't think most people realize what they're getting into with her.
