this one is so fun! pretty simple setup but endless possibilities. super minimalist or highly complex patterns and textures. i have a feeling i'm gonna be experimenting with different variations for a while
I think you'll really like it! it's a lot of fun to set up a scene and then iterate in small ways to make interesting changes to the designs and patterns. :)
Hey! When I try to use the geometry node, it shows a 3d donut instead of the circle that I put into the input of the geometry node. Any idea what causes this?
It sounds like the Torus SOP is still inside of the Geometry COMP. If you go inside, you should see a Torus SOP inside of it and you can delete it, then make sure the 2 bottom right circles on the In SOP are turned on (the render and display flags that are blue and purple).
If you're using a SOP as your source it should show P which is the 3d attribute for Positions. If you're using a different source (it sounds like a TOP), then you should be able to use RGB just fine. Does it work if you use RGB?
Skipped over here for the daily eye candy break between crash course 14/15 😂 this is like the lazy 💤 artist tutorial lol but really cool stuff here…similar but different than Blender Geometry nodes, those are crazy fun too. Perhaps you could show how to automate this to BPM, not audio file transients (cool but unpredictable), rather make things happen with automation like you would in Ableton Live. Your teaching style is great, if I missed something or there’s one coming that can get into that type automation, even if using Ableton Live to drive it, hooray 🎉🎉🎉
For tempo-synced stuff, check out the Beat CHOP - you can output all kinds of time subdivisions based on the Tempo you’ve set in the lower left corner of the TouchDesigner window - every measure, half note, quarter note, etc. Only problem is you need to know what your song’s BPM is first to set the project BPM accordingly. And for Ableton, definitely check out the TDAbleton component! We have a video from a while back about getting started: th-cam.com/video/YP_g3JUlKg4/w-d-xo.html. It’s a full integration with Ableton, you can get access to almost any parameter you can think of: current clips that are playing, project tempo, MIDI notes, etc. Highly recommend looking into it if you use Ableton already, it's a super powerful tool.
This tutorial is pretty awesome! I have a quick question; when I add the line MAT to the network theres nothing in the viewer for the line MAT. The only parameter that shows anything in the viewer is point parameter. And if I attempt to turn on other parameters (like vector or line) it crashes TD. I've recently updated to the latest version (2021.13610) and Im working on a mid 2014 MBP with OS version 10.15.7. Any thoughts would very much appreciated!
That's a tough one. Unfortunately on macOS, you need to stay up to date with the latest OS version to ensure graphics updates are on your system. Are you able to update your OS to the latest version which I believe is Monterey?
Wonderful tutorial, Thank you very much! I tried to map some parameters on a midi controller and it’s a gamechanger, very fast and cool results! How could I do also colour instancing? Thnx
If you're looking to export a video or image, you'll need to render the 3D scene to a 2D texture by adding a Camera COMP, Light COMP (if you're using a Phong MAT) and a Render TOP. Then you can export the rendered output via the Movie File Out TOP, which will let you either save images or record a video.
Hmm that's strange, what version of TouchDesigner are you using? I think if you have a version from within the last year it should have Line MAT in the Operator Create Dialog. Is that where you're not seeing it?
hi! thanks a lot for the course! i have a question: how can i export this as a video (or as a gif maybe)? it’s possible I might’ve missed a video about it, sorry if it’s already been covered, I just can’t seem to find it😅
Of course! Great question - you can record video or image output from TouchDesigner by adding a Movie File Out TOP to the network, which allows you to output video/image files. One thing I'd mention is that it's often better to export a video and convert it to a GIF with external tools/websites (see our blog post about that here: interactiveimmersive.io/blog/outputs/making-animated-gifs-with-touchdesigner/). Another thing to point out here, the network we build in this video doesn't actually render the output to a texture, so you won't be able to record a video of it without adding a few operators! To render the geometry to a texture, you'll need to add a Camera COMP and a Render TOP to the network. You may need to reposition the camera via its transform parameters to get a better view of the scene. Then, you can connect the output of the Render TOP to the Movie File Out and you'll be set to record! Hope that helps! Let us know if you run into any issues setting it up :)
It should work fine on macOS. The only thing that maybe might have a little bit of compatibility issue is the Line MAT, so instead of that one you can use a Constant MAT and on the Common page of its parameters you can set the Wireframe option at the bottom to OpenGL.
I’m getting really strange behavior when I try to do this tutorial. The circles don’t seem to want to move. Sometimes they sort of go back and forth between two states while attempting to rotate using the transform node. I typed in the absTime.frames to see what would happen and it began rotating but it was sort of flashing rapidly between moving and static. I’m at a loss.
When i move the rotation parameter i see the movement on the camera window. when i put the line code to automate this i see the parameter changing but i dont see any movement on the camera.. its my issues? thank you a lot for the tutorial.
No problem. What value range are you using? Maybe the value range on your signal needs to be increased with a Math CHOP. Are you also sure you put the expression in the right place? It can be a bit confusing with so many parameters close together.
