Also, about the TMZ guy, I think the reason he doesn’t get any humanity or respect is confirmed in the credits. His name is rider Muybridge, the real life name of the first man to record the rider on horse in Hollywood. Irl, he gets all the notoriety and fame while the animal and rider go nameless. In this film, that is subverted and the filmmaker:paparazzi dies nameless and faceless while the handlers save the day and get the glory.
I love how much the Gordy scene amplifies the whole don't look at it in the eyes concept. The cowboy dude feels like he had a connection with Gordy, the way he thinks he has a connection with JeanJacket. In reality his eyes were covered by the tablecloth. It's soooooo aweeeessoooooommmeee
No it didn’t kill the kid because it had rehearsed the fist bump with him so much, that’s what it instinctively did. Also there weren’t anymore balloons
Jupe thought he had a special connection with the alien because of the monkey accident. The monkey didn’t attack him because the table cloth was covering his eyes and he wasn’t showing teeth (so no aggression). He is traumatised but he never tried to understand the whole situation and just went the easy route of thinking he was special
Its funny when Jupe himself said that the "Gordy" who attacked was one of the three chimps that played the part (a common practice in the real world), especially since his career in movies was as the token Asian character. He did not have a particular connection to the chimp. He probably couldn't even pick him out if all three were together.
And he thought he had "tamed the beast" with Gordy and made him overconfident. So he thought he could tame the "ufo" also which was his downfall. Another trait that dooms mankind.
This movie had two of the most unsettling scenes I’ve ever seen, the Gordy Show killings and Jupiter’s Claim being sucked up by Jean Jacket, excellent horror but god damn I wanted to walk out with my eyes and ears closed
The best thing about both of those scenes is how they parallel each other thematically. The horror of it is that false sense of security that they're in a safe environment and everything is fine until the animal in question just snaps and then its pure, yet natural carnage (natural in the sense that its part of nature, but no less terrifying).
Yo hearing the people scream while their basically being digested fucked me up in the theatre. Jaw was dropped. I really like what Jordan did with some of the context shots.
The Gordy/Jupe thing to me, was to illustrate that Jupe accidentally (by focusing on the shoe and not looking at Gordy) survived the Gordy attack, and that Jupe fundimentally misunderstood what happened and thought that it made HIM special. Like he was spared because of his "connection" with Gordy. This hubris directly led to him believing that he could "control" Jean Jacket and build a spectacle around feeding it. A lot of the film is dealing with the ego and entitlement that comes from believing we're in control of things, and our belief that we're actually entitled to be in charge of the natural world.
If you look at the film through the lens of exploitation and spectacle, it really helps to understand it more. The gordy's home set never got used to one chimp actor, just a line of them. Jupe's childhood trauma was exploited in the SNL skit. TMZ will always announce a celebrity death before the family gets to. The haywoods were part of the first ever film made yet were ignored by history. Antlers was so obsessed with getting the perfect shot that he died for it. There's a huge amount to take from this.
Antlers is dying (remember his medication) so is ready to be eaten for the “impossible shot” as his death will mean something But what I’ve been wondering is did he actually film it with his land based camera?
Daniel Kaluya's character being called OJ probably wasn't a coincidence either if you think about how the media made such a spectacle out of the OJ Simpson case
The tension in this movie is Built so well, it's actually so crazy that Jordan Peele has made 3 such great films. He truly is an inspiration. I was satisfied with the reveal and now when I think of it. This was a monster movie. A solid 8/10
I saw this movie in the theater with my brother. Him and I caught me being so tensed up about 10 times throughout the movie. My fist was RED at the end from balling it up from the stress of this movie 😭
I saw this opening day in the theaters, and it blew my mind. Loved it. But, does anyone find that the subtitles on home video kinda' spoils a lot of the surprises & twists? Like, how the subtitles tells you that it's literally screaming coming from the clouds. Without that description, it just comes off as a strange sound coming from the sky. It isn't until later in the film that you find out that the sound is actually people screaming. That was a chilling surprise. So, yeah... I think the overly-descriptive subtitles gave things away a little too soon.
The twist of the UFO actually being the alien is one of the most creative concepts I’ve ever seen in an alien movie. Hearing the horses and people screaming while being digested as it flies around is absolutely chilling
One of the most misleading trailers I’ve seen for a film and the fact that in the trailer it made it look there were creepy aliens but turned out just to be kids in alien masks was disappointing imo I like the creepiness factor his previous films had didn’t enjoy the film as much as get out or us still weirdly interesting though very intrigued to see what this next film is though I love his style
I didnt realize the lady wasn’t screaming just bc of the horse. You could hear Jean jacket start to digest them and that made the scene way scarier now than when I first watched it 💀
During the prank scene i was literally glued to my seat and felt terrified. When i saw the kid get up and reveal himself from the shadows i absolutely lost it
Angel didn't get sucked in. The barbed wire on the tarp caused Jean Jacket to spit him out before he could swallow him. You see him watching from the hill later still wrapped in the tarp.
Saw this in IMAX... sound design and cinematography is amazing! I see a lot of people complaining about it and saying it's confusing, but I got most of the themes Peele was presenting by the end. It's a very clever and subtle movie in terms of what it's trying to say. Jordan Peele is a genius!!!!
@@francoisdewit9550 well, one of the obvious themes is spectacle. Our (the audience) craving for big/epic things. Like the marvel movies.. each one trying to top the previous one in terms of scale and we as the viewers just wanting more. Also we can't look away from it, and as a result we get "sucked up" into all of it.. the grandness of it. It consumes us.. At least that's how I see it. There are a lot more themes like bad miracles, animals and who's ontop of the food chain, dealing with grief etc. Hope this helps :) but it's all up for debate
"Don't look up! I bet that's what he wanted to call it." Fun fact: before "Nope", Jordan Peele considered the title "Little green man". Also, here in Brazil, the title for the movie is not a literal translation and it is pretty close to "Don't look up". The title is "Não! Não olhe!", which literally means "No! Don't look!".
The Gordy's Home Incident is one of my favorite horror scenes in recent years. No supernatural happening, no dimly lit hallways, just a wild animal behaving like a wild animal does.
One of the craziest theories I heard about the movie is that the creature may have been an angel because of the bible verse, how it comes from the clouds and also the description of angels in the Bible are creatures that don't actually have a human form.
This was a fun movie. The idea of UFO being THE Alien was new and creepy. The people sucked inside the alien was a creepy scene and their faded screams, that was disturbing. The most scary scene for me was the Gordy opening cuz thats the type of POV I get when having a nightmare.
I saw someone say on a review when it first came out that the form at it takes at the end of the film was an intimidation technique, because OJ was able to intimidate it. It even started blaring it’s mouth teeth or mouth thing at OJ like any other animal. I just see a lot of people not really getting why it formed like that and I feel like that explains it perfectly.
Yea someone said that it actually looks like a species of prey mantis which was interesting since a prey mantis prevented the camera from catching the image early in the film
I loved the fact it looked alot like a weather balloon. (a common "explanation" skeptics throw up to wave away UFO sightings) but also, the first thing I thought of when it revealed that form was the ancient light ship from an episode of Deep Space Nine. IE, a space ship using solar sails to travel. Which I suspect is what they were going for with the design in addition to the intimidation factor.
I love the way this movie uses audiovisual cues to signal Jean Jacket. The slowing of electronics, the high-pitched sounds (you later realize are screams), the dark overhead showing its shadown. It makes the horror all the more effective. I saw some comments referring to its final form as horrible but beautiful, and I'd agree. I love that it makes you intrigued and want to look at it but all the more horrified wondering that something like that could just be lurking in the clouds one day. Peele is such an ambitious storyteller. The more I think about this movie, the more I love it. The imagery, the horror, the themes of spectacle and dealing with trauma. And the blood rain scene is probably one of the most horrifiying scenes we've seen yet (with stunning imagery to boot). And this movie would not have been as fun as it was without Daniel Kaluuya and Keke Palmer! They were so fun to watch and their sibling dynamic was perfect.
im so impressed by how the vfx crew managed to nail jean jacket. early on it follows the solid principle of not showing the monster to make it even scarier, and with such a simple design they really pulled as much horror out of its miniscule appearances as they could. the climax of the movie they still fucking delivered, and it transforming into its true form completely caught me off guard, but even with this huge eldritch balloon floating in broad daylight they still managed to keep it terrifying. i absolutely loved this movie
I actually found the Gordy scene way more frightening than anything else (that’s not to say the other scenes weren’t tense AF). It’s shot so brutally realistic and considering what a chimp mauling can do to a person IRL, it’s even more disturbing. It really made me say “Nope”
And it was shot/edited in a way that was brutal AF but also held back. They could have done the typical thing of showing the bodies being brutalized directly in the camera, but he knew how to hold back yet create an absolutely brutal, scary scene.
@@LadyAstarionAncunin Yeah, though now that I think about, Jordan Peele has never been too gory with his movies. It’s usually kept to stabbing like in Us and I think the most graphic was the brain surgery in Get Out. And anything that would be gory is done out of frame like the motorboat kill in Us or the chimp eating the girl’s face here.
@Lesley that was definitely the inspiration here, with all the themes of hubris in the face of a wild animal. even with the lady surviving with her face brutally scarred mirrors the real life events where iirc the lady who owned the chimp survived with heavy scarring while it was her friend that died.
This film is is incredible. Jordan Peele is a genius. The characterisation is amazing. I love how every character is named after somebody in history who’s story was a spectacle, an example OJ Simpson. Also using the Gordy storyline to set up Jupe (Steven Yeun) complex of thinking he can tame the untameable and exploit others. The score is so good and this movie probably has my favourite cinematography this year.
The fact JP cringes when people call him a genius says it all. He’s had some good movies. Y’all these days crown anything you like as “genius” to the point it’s lost all meaning.
The Gordy's Home scene in the Dolby theater..... so quiet you could hear a pin drop, it was THE MOST unsettling, tense thing I've ever felt. I shit you not, that scene was on my mind for days!! Fr fr I was already a fan of Peele before seeing this movie, but this imo put him up there in my top. The sound design, the cinematography (those night scenes, MY GOD), the flawless way the comedy weaved in with the story..... it was EXCELLENT!!!
This is one of those movies that I knew I liked after leaving the theater but I had to let it sit in my mind for a while afterwards to get a full grasp on why I liked it, what the "message" of the movie is, and how it all comes together.
One consistent thing I've noticed with reviewers is how much more they appreciated it after multiple watchings. It is definitely a think piece of a movie!
I like how Em took several pictures of the "battle" between the Jupe balloon vs Jean Jacket, as a throwback to her "great, great and another great" grandfather's pictures that were made into the first ever movie clip.
One of my favourite things on a rewatch is the opening credits of the film, where we seem to be watching the film of the running horse through the camera. Then we realize that it's actually just reflected in Jean Jackets eye.
Just saw it again. I love the way he explored the theme: how we're drawn to spectacles and the cost of it/what we can lose. Even in how he named the character "OJ," which brings to mind one of the biggest trial spectacles of all time. It's "straightforward" but the theme is laced throughout, especially in the Gordy scenes (which were so brutal without showing too much). The Gordy stuff was about how Jupe misunderstood the nature of a beast (didn't realize that he was saved because the tablecloth hid his eyes, thus he wasn't seen as a threat). Notice he says before his presentation "You were chosen." He thought that there was something special about him that could tame wild animals, but it turned out he was wrong. He tried to make a spectacle of the alien, thinking he was in control, and paid with his life. I saw a comment say it was "sadistic" that the girl survivor of Gordy's attack lost her life, but I think there was a point in that. To me, it showed how the innocent can be drawn into (and be harmed by) someone else's pursuit of a spectacle. So, collateral damage.
My favorite theory is that the alien is a biblically accurate angel. It always knows when your looking at it because it's covered in eyes just like angels in the bible, and they're are some stories in there where angels actually kill people for looking at them. Just a very cool thing to think about
Thats what i was thinking when i first saw it but i was expecting the final touch to the eye in the middle but i guess that wouldnt be possible since there would be no mouth
@@0ne1azy could be both, when it was doing the thing where it pushed the fringed squares out it seemed like it was challenging things, like with oj who it seemed to respect and then the balloon which it ate. plus once it folds back up after eating the balloon, we finally get a shot inside the "mouth" looking back in the direction it's always come from and see that the pov has been from a square just like the eye/mouth it ate the balloon with, like it's watching. idk, i thought the square was its real eye, and it unfolded the stuff to eat when it was in its real form.
The best decision I made with this movie was only watching that first trailer. This movie subverted every expectation I had made from it and made this movie that much better.
This movie was amazing and intense. The Gordy chimpanzee scene was absolutely horrifying because of how realistic it felt. Also when the ufo dumped the blood and guts of the victims on the Haywood’s house damn that was disturbing. Great reaction guys. I was kinda wondering why you guys didn’t post a review of this movie when it first came out but hey at least you guys watched it now.
@@tochukwuibe9540 there were some chunks during the window part, it could just be random debris but I get how ppl could think it’s organs and guts n stuff
The scenes with gordy were truly one of the most horrific ones if seen in a while. The brutality, the amazing sound editing and the tention. Just brilliant and really scary
i went to see this movie with one of my friends and about 10 minutes into the movie she goes “did i mention i have a fear of horses” and i almost cackled in the theatre
Jupe's Wife's office is made with glass partitions, looking like a glass case, much like the glass cases Jupe keeps his memorabilia in ( as well as the glass case he keeps Lucky in at the Star Lasso Experience ). And the inorganic material that rains down from Jean Jacket is like gory, trauma-tinged memorabilia (much like OJ keeps the Nickel and Ricky kept the bloody shoe).
The sound design in this movie is incredible! My favorite is the barn scene where the beat of the sprinklers is part of the tense music. This movie also great on a second watch, you catch so many more details. Also I think the ending is not what you guys said about them getting the picture.. she did get the picture but she was too late, all those other people were there with cameras and saw it. So in the end it was all for nothing, and then she was just happy that OJ was alive.
Yessssss. Been waiting for people to start dropping reactions to this movie. I thought it was going to be your typical UFO type film but NOPE. Peele did his own little spin on it and I loved everything about it, such a well thought-out concept that turned out incredible.
Loved that John had an understanding of Gordy immediately after watching. I totally agree with his thoughts, as I found the film to be (arguably) Peele’s most straightforward presentation of a story
I remember seeing this in the theater and I was in awe. AND the Alien feeding time scene was DISTURBING. I remember feeling nauseous just thinking of the suffocating feeling the scene had in the viewer!
When I saw that part I literally pointed at my screen and ask my friend in horror "WHAT TF IS THAT?!" and my entire stomach turned making me lose my appetite
I actually love the impossible design of the alien, that’s the kind of alien shit I love, it reminded me a bit of love craft type concepts but still it’s own thing, it was immaculate imo
I don’t watch horror movies, since I’m such a coward when it comes to them, but this movie was an exception. I was so intrigued with what the movie was about that I had to see it. If I had to get something off my bucket list, this was the movie to do it. What a stunning movie! Between the characters and the visuals, this has to be one of my favorite movies of this year.
Watched this in IMAX and loved every minute of it. SPOILER BELOW: . . . . . . So the point of Gordy in the movie is connected to both the animal behavior of the animals in the movie and the UFO/"AlienJeanJacket", where the Chimpanzee that played Gordy was used as a Spectacle (the main thing of the movie, hence the Bible quote) for the show, with them having a real Chimpanzee that was "trained" to be a cast member. However, at its basis, it is still an animal and has specific behaviors. It is said that if you have not established Trust, with a Chimpanzee/Ape/Monkey, and you look it directly it its eyes, it is a sign of Aggression towards them. So with Gordy, being startled by the Balloon and everyone staring at him, he attacked them since they never established Trust with him. Now with Jupe (Steven Yeun's character) he was also somewhat used as Spectacle, as being always the typical Asian character in a white ensemble cast, so he and Gordy found a connection together of being used as Spectacle for showbiz, and had their signature fist bump they shared together of everything's okay. Which is also why, Jupe was spared, because since he had the tablecloth separating him and Gordy, he wasn't directly looking into each others eyes, and Gordy could sense it was Jupe and wanted to give him their signature fist bump, since they trust each other. Which then all ties together of the theme of "Whats a Bad Miracle", with Jupe being spared with Gordy, and OJ being spared the 1st against the UFO/"JeanJacketAlien"
I was fortunate enough to see this in IMAX… suuuuuch a good choice to have seen this in that format. It was perfectly shot for that screen… what I love about Jordan is his movies are just something you can analyze and talk about on the ride home, to me the beauty of this movie is not jump scares but it’s the intensity that the movie gives you. For like the entire last half the the movie you are just tense, he sets up the fear of animals in the first half (the horse on set very subtle, then Gordy’s scene overtly showing the danger) so then when you get to the reveal of it being a creature in the second half you are just constantly tense because you know it will just react in whatever way it wants the way a territorial predator would be and you need to follow the rules that the creature sets… and to me when you find out that the people getting sucked up and being digested alive and just hearing them screaming just being digested really is haunting and then seeing the claustrophobia of them inside the creature just haunting
I love Nope more and more as time goes on from watching it. The homages to Signs which I also love, like the little musical cues, the real horror of a savage chimp attack. And the moment the screaming over the house became revealed I knew I loved the movie.
Interesting how this film is all about getting the perfect shot. Then the filmmakers go ahead and get the Akira slide in live action pretty much perfectly. I fucking love this movie.
I understand complaints about his films, but I don’t agree with them. His films are more about the art and the message vs the lore. Like in Us, people complained about how poorly the situation of the tethered was explained. And it really wasn’t explained at all. And I understand why it bothered them. But. That’s not what Jordan Peele is about. His films are character driven, not “fact” driven. I guess that it comes down to what you want out of a film. And what he delivers may not be for everyone. But for me, personally, he’s 3 for 3. I was scared that he’d lose his magic after the first two, but as soon as I saw his name, I knew I’d go see it regardless. He’s probably my favorite director right now. He’s got me by the throat lol
I literally watched this last night man such a good movie that part where he sees the alien pop out and there actually kids had me spooked not gonna lie hahaha
You know something I just realized when rewatching through your reaction. We never learn the chimp's actual name. Gordy was the name of the character. All the other characters in the movie call him that, the show was named that, the movie title cards him as that but Jupe says earlier "one of the chimps that play Gordy" and it's just a simple, tiny throw away line that speaks to the total erasure that can happen in the industry. What was the chimp's name? Not important. But "a chimp" on the set of the TV show went nuts and killed people so that's the important part.
Loved this movie for all the reasons most people have already shared! Great review and reaction. BUT I gotta say my favorite line is at the beginning when Emerald says she "dOeS sOmE mUsIc On tHe sIdE"...had me busting up laughing like crazy!!!
I thought one of the best scenes in the movie is when Jupe is telling the story about the SNL skit with Chris Kattan. You can really see how repressed his memory is of that day when Gordy went crazy and killed people.
I LOVED this movie! This is one of the most original concepts I've seen recently in sci-fi/horror. Kudos to Jordan Peele, as he's becoming a master of suspense and paving an extraordinary career in using genre to convey social and political messages.
Honestly we all know what the two most popular scenes are but that "Sunglasses at night" scene is so good. You got the main character actually being smart which is funny pointing out how boring a horror movie is when everyone does the smart thing. Then the slowed down lyrics giving a hint on how to survive. (Obviously, you can't see if you wear sunglasses at night) The scene feels like your in the water with a shark except the ocean is the sky itself.
The fucked up part in re-watching is realizing that OJ wanted to eventually buy his horses back but Jupe was feeding them to jean jacket and had no intentions on a resale. Love this film. Its soooo well done, refreshing, funny and thrilling to watch. I think the flashbacks to Gordy was showing that this has been happening for some time. We see that when jean jacket appears animals go krazy and I think Gordy going nuts and then snapping out of it had something to do with jean jacket and showed how Jupe sees himself as lucky/special for surviving.
One of my favourite movie experiences in many years, and probably my favourite of Peele’s works so far. I’m amazed by how conceptually strong and innovative both the story and the execution were -all at once a cosmic horror thriller, a modern cowboy epic, and a character study, delivering a perfectly layered message about the fascination for spectacles.
The Alien's first shape was simply an eye. A gigantic eye. With Jordan Peele's biblical layering, you could see it as the eye of God, the one that sees all and judges all. Also, Ricky's theme park is called Jupiter's Claim. In Roman mythology, Jupiter was the god among the gods, basically the Roman version of Zeus, the supreme god if you will. Which is why Jupiter gave its name to the most massive planet of our solar system. And apart from its sheer massive size, what is Jupiter famous for ? Its gigantic storm, said to be 5 times the size of Earth, called Jupiter's Eye, with winds powerful enough that it could eat up the earth itself. The alien in Nope could basically be an amalgamation of all of this. It could be the Eye of God, that came down on earth to take what it deems is his to claim. It could also be the Eye of Jupiter, only in living form.
I think this movie is a nihilistic masterpiece that somehow creates a positive and humorous feeling in the presence of pure horror and tragedy. It points to the “no one is special” and the “bad miracles” we create in our mind to make us feel a larger connection to the grand scheme or universe. Juxtaposed with the created and shared meaning of the bond between OJ and Emerald that we see throughout the film that you would rarely see in such a nihilistic take on fate and a connection to the universe.
I'm so glad you guys mentioned the flip from alien movie to monster movie, cause that reveal got me so pumped in the theater lol i was so excited and surprised that it was a creature feature, they're my favorite!
There were at least 3 Flips that hit very specific switches in my brain, the most visceral of which is the Western Action Bravado sequence, Swelling Orchestral, included.
I absolutely hate myself that I missed the theme of erasure in this movie. The fact that the man who literally was the first person ever to be shot on a series of moving pictures in real life is to this day unknown because white people in charge wanted to quite literally erase him from history says a lot about how that is still happening today. Jordan Peele proving for the 3rd time in a row that he is a true master of subtext in horror. As for the UFO I actually love the reveal that it is not an alien ship but an ALIEN itself (and not a sentient being but more of a wild animal like the shark in JAWS) was such a great subversion of my expectations. The scene of it taking all those people at the show was scary enough, but then when it’s hovering above the house and you hear the painfully horrifying screams of all the people and then when they are eaten it starts raining blood!!!!! I am never going to forget scene. And finally I loved the fact that Jordan Peele could’ve done the clichéd horror endings of either A) everyone dies and any evidence what caused it is erased, or B) the bad guy or monster is killed and there are 1 or 2 survivors but no one believes them and they are blamed for it all. Instead not only does Emerald kill that giant killer weather balloon, but OJ also survived and to really top it all off they actually have the proof of the UFO they need, and you know that means they are not just famous but immortalized as heroes.👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
The way I was waiting for this video to drop!! This movie is incredible, I’ve seen it twice because I didn’t catch everything the first time round. The Gordy scene is chilling and so central to Jupe’s character and to the audience understanding the film. Jordan Peele is a genius!
You gotta watch this movie twice in order to understand everything that is packed into this magnificent movie. I think once u know what to expect, ur more able to lock into the little important details…
"DON'T LOOK UP should be the title of the movie " this is exactly what I thought when I watching those climax scenes and here you guys thought the same...I'm not alone 😂
Gordy went nuts when the balloon popped A balloon killed Jean jacket and technically ended up getting Gordy killed. The parallels in this film are nuts
Jordan REALLY knows how to give viewers an experience in his movies Like the theaters I was in for this, get out, & Us were really into the movie and made the experience so much better Crazy how people are jus hatin this
What I love about this movie is that the comedy is in the right places and don't feel forced it feels like it's what would happen if you experienced this. The horror and tension is amazing
I'm telling you guys, you should have watched this in the Dolby Theater. The whole theater shook and vibrated whenever Jean Jacket either roared or just made a simple clicking noise. It was insane and made him an even more menacing antagonist.
Also, a thing to know is that this movie really has to be seen on the biggest screen possible (If possible in IMAX), with actual spatial sound system. That's one of those movies that has to be experienced so that the creature's reveal really feels like gigantic and terrifying. Watching it on a desktop monitor doesn't nearly do it any justice. The type of game view type Greg was looking for is simply 3rd person view, as opposed to 1st person view of shooters like Doom.
The sound editing in this movie was incredible. The sound of the horses and people screaming as Jean Jacket moves through the sky is so chilling. And it’s vocalizations… the clicks and stuff… so creepy. Loved this movie.
I loved this movie! You guys were spot-on I think with your interpretations of the social commentary and hidden subtext; a lot of people are saying that the Gordy plot is disconnected, but it's absolutely not, and you picked up on that too. This might not be my favorite out of Jordan Peele's 3 films so far but it is great. I think I need to sit with it some more; but if it ranks lower than Us and Get Out for me, it's only very slightly. I do love all 3, Jordan Peele is brilliant!
17:10 What his objective was was to help save the girl. Seen so many of these reactions where someone points out that the mauled girl shouldn't have made a sound or moved. How do you not move when you're injured like she is? And seeing her being beaten by the chimp, the guy comes down the stairs thinking he might be able to help her, but couldn't. That's the objective. When someone is in distress they aren't always thinking.
I like how Jupe relives his trauma with his kids. Their mask looks like the cameras that were there when Gordy attacked and their costumes are ape like
This movie was incredible. I thought the way the alien was handled and portrayed was so original. It also made a lot of sense. It reminds me of deep sea creatures in the way its body is fluid, makes sense if it is meant to travel between different atmospheric pressures. Also, I like your talk about this focusing on the people behind the camera in the entertainment industry. It is wonderful and thankless and there is not show without your tech crew. In theatre there is an applause for your actors, and they then point to the band. Sometimes! They point to their lighting, and rarely their sound. There would be no show without everyone else who works on it.
The shoe represents how we can be so enthralled with something like a shoe standing “miraculously” while something so horrific is happening. And then we’ll question so much about the meaning of the shoe and still miss the point of why he was showing the Gordy scene in the first place. Which ties into if you just paid attention and understood and respected the natural order of things then you’ll be ok. It’s all just really well written! I feel like Jaws is the perfect comparison! Very well done as always for Mr. Jordan Peele

Ehh I don't think the tablecloth mattered, it killed other people who weren't looking at it, and the tablecloth was see through anyway
i think it also could've been the fact that all the balloons had stopped popping
No it didn’t kill the kid because it had rehearsed the fist bump with him so much, that’s what it instinctively did. Also there weren’t anymore balloons
You're absolutely right. I love this movie so much.
He was also looking at the shoe of his former crush(the one he puts in the case)and because he was looking away, Gordy took him as submissive.
No watch it again, they locked eyes for a good 5 seconds
@@pnut3844able yes, but, being in the shadows behind the tablecloth, Gordy couldn't see Jupe's eyes and took him as submissive.
This movie had two of the most unsettling scenes I’ve ever seen, the Gordy Show killings and Jupiter’s Claim being sucked up by Jean Jacket, excellent horror but god damn I wanted to walk out with my eyes and ears closed
Same, the Gordy killing scene was probably the most unsettling experience I’ve had in a theater.
Also the kids dressed like aliens, I physically recoiled at that scene
The best thing about both of those scenes is how they parallel each other thematically. The horror of it is that false sense of security that they're in a safe environment and everything is fine until the animal in question just snaps and then its pure, yet natural carnage (natural in the sense that its part of nature, but no less terrifying).
i was so tense while watching these scenes omg
you JUST HAD TO FIX YOUR EYES WITH WATER
Yo hearing the people scream while their basically being digested fucked me up in the theatre. Jaw was dropped. I really like what Jordan did with some of the context shots.

@@yesikanarvaez5027 bruh that is mild compared to many shows and movies lmao
@@Walker-ow7vj not everyone can carry the chad energy you do
Took my glasses off during that. It absolutely fucked me
The Gordy/Jupe thing to me, was to illustrate that Jupe accidentally (by focusing on the shoe and not looking at Gordy) survived the Gordy attack, and that Jupe fundimentally misunderstood what happened and thought that it made HIM special. Like he was spared because of his "connection" with Gordy. This hubris directly led to him believing that he could "control" Jean Jacket and build a spectacle around feeding it. A lot of the film is dealing with the ego and entitlement that comes from believing we're in control of things, and our belief that we're actually entitled to be in charge of the natural world.
the shoe balancing the way it did was also a reference to when oj asked his sister if she believes a bad miracle.
Antlers death also being a direct call back to what he said to Em on the phone
The siblings had such great chemistry it really felt like they were legit related

Same here man I really liked this one. Under get out but way above Us
No cap
What is it trying to say?
@@francoisdewit9550 well, one of the obvious themes is spectacle. Our (the audience) craving for big/epic things. Like the marvel movies.. each one trying to top the previous one in terms of scale and we as the viewers just wanting more. Also we can't look away from it, and as a result we get "sucked up" into all of it.. the grandness of it. It consumes us..
At least that's how I see it. There are a lot more themes like bad miracles, animals and who's ontop of the food chain, dealing with grief etc.
Hope this helps :) but it's all up for debate
Saw it two times in IMAX, that's the best way to watch it
"Don't look up! I bet that's what he wanted to call it."
Fun fact: before "Nope", Jordan Peele considered the title "Little green man". Also, here in Brazil, the title for the movie is not a literal translation and it is pretty close to "Don't look up". The title is "Não! Não olhe!", which literally means "No! Don't look!".
I think "Nope" is a more appropiate title.
🇧🇷
Plus I think calling it something like "Don't look" or "Don't look up" gives away a lil' a key point in the movie.
The Gordy's Home Incident is one of my favorite horror scenes in recent years. No supernatural happening, no dimly lit hallways, just a wild animal behaving like a wild animal does.
Yeah and to start the film like that was really unsettling I was like errrrr what am I watching?
One of the craziest theories I heard about the movie is that the creature may have been an angel because of the bible verse, how it comes from the clouds and also the description of angels in the Bible are creatures that don't actually have a human form.
IIRC, Jordan Peele has gone on to say the design of Jean Jacket was inspired by the angels in Evangelion, so that theory checks out
and then there's the character named angel...
An even better theory is that the creature is an similar/offspring of the (SPOILER ALERT) creature from the movie Life with Ryan Reynolds
@@Khail707 ohh damn

(a common "explanation" skeptics throw up to wave away UFO sightings)
but also, the first thing I thought of when it revealed that form was the ancient light ship from an episode of Deep Space Nine. IE, a space ship using solar sails to travel. Which I suspect is what they were going for with the design in addition to the intimidation factor.
See…I wouldn’t say intimidation….I would say beautiful…so beautiful that it forces you to look.
@@voodeux_badeux well both many animals use them for threat and attraction heh.
@Lesley yes! Travis the chimp. The real life survivor wore a veil just like the one worn in Nope and appeared on Oprah.
@Lesley that was definitely the inspiration here, with all the themes of hubris in the face of a wild animal. even with the lady surviving with her face brutally scarred mirrors the real life events where iirc the lady who owned the chimp survived with heavy scarring while it was her friend that died.

It is definitely a think piece of a movie!
for sure. this is one of those movies that you just have to sit down and let it all sink in afterwards.
One of the BEST movies I've seen in years. What people will do or neglect to do for the sake of the spectacle
Bravo, well said
@@Stop_Resisting101yeah definitely didn’t enjoy it as much as get out or us still sort of weirdly interesting though
I love how it starts out as Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and ends up as JAWS. A fitting tribute to the films of Steven Spielberg.
My favorite theory is that the alien is a biblically accurate angel.
It always knows when your looking at it because it's covered in eyes just like angels in the bible, and they're are some stories in there where angels actually kill people for looking at them. Just a very cool thing to think about
The angels don't kill you actually, you just die if you face them
Way too smart for Peele.

It wasn't subtitled, but Gordy signed "What Happened Family".

The cinematography was something else in this one and the subtle tension was kept throughout the whole watch.

I hope you guys reach unprecedented levels of success…. Your take on this movie is amazing
I gotta say I love how you guys are doing more full length movie reactions now! 🎥
saw this one in theater on opening night. so stoked to see what you guys think!
But is OJ actually alive or did she just imagine him?
@@L3GIQN no he’s alive. Otherwise we would’ve heard his screaming.
The way I was waiting for this video to drop!! This movie is incredible, I’ve seen it twice because I didn’t catch everything the first time round. The Gordy scene is chilling and so central to Jupe’s character and to the audience understanding the film. Jordan Peele is a genius!
Yeah easily one of the most unsettling openings to a film I’ve seen chilling
The scene with the kids, the abduction and the scene with the chimp, was absolutely bone chilling
Am I the only one who tears up when OJ draws JJ's attention away from Emerald? Like had I been alone I would've broken down
You gotta watch this movie twice in order to understand everything that is packed into this magnificent movie. I think once u know what to expect, ur more able to lock into the little important details…
That's definitely what I'm doing this week now that it's digital
Disagree massively. I was coerced into a second viewing and all it did was make the glaring flaws even more stark.
@@smiffy68 Well sorry to hear that, I really like this film
@@themoviecritic1092 that's good! Not every movie connects with everyone.
@@smiffy68 Definitely!
"DON'T LOOK UP should be the title of the movie " this is exactly what I thought when I watching those climax scenes and here you guys thought the same...I'm not alone 😂
Antlers foreshadows his death to get the impossible shot @14:52 “it’s the dream you never wake up from”
What makes the Gordy scene more terrifying is that its based on a true story
Gordy went nuts when the balloon popped
A balloon killed Jean jacket and technically ended up getting Gordy killed. The parallels in this film are nuts
I think getting shot was what got Gordy killed
Most of these shots were actually filmed during day, shows how good the CGI is and the amount of effort put into this movie.
Jordan REALLY knows how to give viewers an experience in his movies
Like the theaters I was in for this, get out, & Us were really into the movie and made the experience so much better
Crazy how people are jus hatin this
What I love about this movie is that the comedy is in the right places and don't feel forced it feels like it's what would happen if you experienced this.
This was a very interesting take on the UFO, Its been so damn long since we got a good Alien film, and I enjoyed every minute of this :)
Both of the characters getting a chance to do the commercial really showed the difference between the brother and sister.
Was waiting for this reaction. This movie was great and a fantastic spin on the alien /ufo trope.

What his objective was was to help save the girl.
This was one of the only movies I’ve seen by myself at a theatre… what an experience!
Jordan Peele
only three movies under his belt but man jordan peele does not miss. absolutely loved watching this in theaters.
And now candymn 😏
I like that the sounds Jean Jacket makes seem to be inspired by Steven Spieldberg's War of the Worlds movie
Legit Jaws from the sky!
I LOVED this,
Its wild each of JPs films are completely different 🙌
RESPECT
The whole thing of Gordy was to show that Jupe thought he had a very special connection with Gordy that he tries to replicate with Jean Jacket
