    How did those Powder Blues make out? I have a Powder Blue and a Legacy Blueberry (pollinator for Powder Blue).
    Powder Blue can get 6 to 8 feet tall and have a spread of 6 to 8 feet.
    Legacy can get 8 to 10 feet tall and 6 to 8 feet spread.
    Other things I learned for blueberries.
    They love acidic soil.
    You'll want to make the soil yourself and the soil should be prepped 6 to 8 months in advance. Don't worry, still able to make and use last minute.
    Most of this is how I make my own potting soil also, just more things added for blueberries.
    Regular potting soil mix.
    What you need:
    Garden soil - not sure on bag price but local delivery for my 60% / 40% compost soil mix is $40 a ton. Buy bags if you can't handle a load of soil dumped in your yard.
    Sphagnum Peat Moss - 3cu ft bag is around $20 ($18 in my area).
    Perlite - $5 for 8 quart bag. (I bought 4 bags and haven't used 1 whole bag yet) perlite is the little white balls you see in potting mix, this helps with drainage.
    Get a 5 gallon bucket.
    On a tarp or in wheelbarrow
    Dump 2 buckets of soil,
    1 bucket of sphagnum
    And eye ball perlite by adding a little and mixing in until it looks like potting soil.
    You'll save a lot of money and have high quality potting mix that costs $14+ a bag in stores.
    For blueberries do the same but you'll need to buy 2 more things (3 for immediate use).
    Pine bark nuggets $5 a bag
    Soil acidifier - Dr. Earth has a good one and Miracle gro has a good one, look for anything made for Rhododendrons.
    Add half a bucket of pine bark
    Handfull of soil acidifier
    For immediate use miracle gro makes a Rhododendron instant feed mix.
    Use a ph tester ($20 lowes) stabs into soil.
    You'll want ph around 5.5 to 6.
    GOD BLESS YOU ALL!

      Hey there! All three of my blueberries are doing well. I only grow in pots so I use the same potting soil that I use for all my plant. A 42.5 litter which fills one pot cost $8 per bag so I’m good with that because I just top off my plant. My blueberries are full of buds. Yes they like acidity so I just add a little acidity to them if needed. Thanks so much

    I planted a dozen plants. The first year they gave me blueberries for my cereal every day. Last year they nearly had blueberries in them. I had the soil checked and it was good. Idk I live in RI. I even gave them food in the spring and Fall. They are in the third year this year they look the same size as when I planted them.

    That soil is not going to work for a blueberry bush. They have to have acidic soil unlike most other plants, they need little nutrients but the key is very well slightly acidic soil. Perfect soil mix is: 1/3 Canadian peat moss, 1/3 mini pine bark nuggets and 1/3 perlite ( the Canadian peat and pine bark nuggets keep it acidic and well draining but you can always add soil acidified later if needed. Because most water is alkaline, it’s best to water with rain water or soak some pine bark nuggets in container of water and when the water turns rust color than it’s ph has changed to more acidic and you can use for watering blueberries. They do not like to be soaked or in sitting water at all. Another alternative mix can be: half peat and half pine bark nuggets and than throw a couple handfuls of sand in mix or 1/3 potting mix, 1/3 pine bark nuggets and 1/3 peat moss and add a little soil acidified if using this recipe. Also when you fertilize the plant, use fertilizer made for acid loving plants even if blueberries isn’t listed on package or you can use berry fertilizer. Blueberries are so different than other garden plants. A single plant will produce is self pollinating but they thrive with two or more plants from another variety that bloom at same time. Make sure when picking a variety that you choose one for your zone because they each need a certain amount of chill hours in winter to make them come out of dormancy in spring and if it doesn’t get the required amount than won’t bloom. Hope this helped

      @@SavedByJesus-pi3yu I don't know what you mean by "soaked" but I transplanted 4 blueberry bushes and then they all got crazy transplant shock, red (normal cause it's september, lowering temperatures) and dry and brittle. I barely watered them cause a heavy rain fell 2 days after transplanted (first day I watered) and that humidity was in the soil for days, but I was wrong, I should have watered after that rain, instead of waiting for a week, cause they went too dry and now I think they are gonna die and lose all leaves... I don't know what to do.

      It should be fine. What zone are you in? It should lay dormant over winter. If it needs a little trim do it at the end of winter but we’ll before spring. Mine is still doing great. Had some blueberries from it this year too! Thanks

    • @NMW80
      @NMW80 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TheScaredyCatGardener ah okay Ty. I’m in Australia in a cool temperate zone. So just into spring now. I will cut off the dead parts then and hope it grows back this spring/summer. Maybe it’s the just from being over wintered in bunnings. It’s a sunshine blue variety. I also have another one I bought years ago and it’s fine. So yeah I will repot it and hope it bounces back. It may have been in its pot for too long and needs a larger pot too. But I got some proper acidic fertilizer just for the blue berries today and going to see how that goes. I forgot to get a ph tester again but will get another one since someone stole mine out my front yard last year 🤦‍♀️
      I just bought another variety today for cross pollination. Also trying to grow some from seeds from fresh and frozen store bought blue berries. Thanks again 😊

    • @TheScaredyCatGardener
      @TheScaredyCatGardener  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@NMW80 you’re welcome. I also have a video on how to prune blueberries properly. That may help. Oh I didn’t know you were in Australia. Has it actually turned spring there or just about to? If you are already in spring unless it has some really obvious dead parts I wouldn’t trim it until next winter. Oh please let me know how growing them from the store bought and frozen go. I haven’t been successful at that yet but I have tried lol.

    • @NMW80
      @NMW80 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheScaredyCatGardener yes it’s already spring here and unfortunately it’s probably too late. It has some dead branches at the ends. So it’s just mainly on the ends of the branches. I was just going to trim the dead parts off. I will check out your video though for sure and I subbed btw 😊
      As for the store bought frozen blue berries lol I have tried it before too a few times and I also failed. It’s sad but most are packed over seas and I think they radiate them to prevent pests etc. If they were locally grown and packed then i don’t see why it wouldn’t work cos blue berries can survive freezing temps I think 🤔
      I will keep you informed though for sure. Lol fingers crossed it works this time. I haven’t even gotten fresh seeds to work for me lol. I think the seeds I have been using were not fully mature. Have you had much luck with fresh BB seeds germinating? I am going to get some local frozen blue berries from my fruit n veg shop this week and try them. I know they sell local products and it’s not been out of the country so it won’t be treated etc. The supermarkets unfortunately don’t usually have locally packed and grown frozen berries which is so stupid. I doubt they would ever grow if they are from over seas since it’s prob been treated with radiation. When you tried your frozen berries were they local or do you think they were packed etc over seas and had been treated? Cheers

    Blueberries are probably the most failed crops for me. The combination of yet another brutal winter only to be assaulted by spidermites after really did them in. I currently have this sad green twig with a brown top sticking out of a pot, that's my blueberry bush😭😭😭😭😭 Tomorrow I will look for bone meal to go with the blood meal already here and see if I can revive that poor nugget.

    • @TheScaredyCatGardener
      @TheScaredyCatGardener  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hey Shelly! Don’t give up on that twig. If you watch some of my more recent videos like the 50+ plants Growing in containers you will see how far this blueberry came in one year. It now has fruit. Cut the brown tip part off and I would take it out of the pot it’s in and start over. You can put it back in the same pot but shake gently as much of the soil as you can off. Wash the pot if you don’t have another one. Start with fresh potting soil. Mix the soil with 3/4 soil 1/4 mushroom compost or whatever compost you use about 1/4 cup of blood meal 1/4 cup of bone meal. If you see roots when you shake off most of the old soil you should really be in good shape. Mix everything well and replant the twig about an inch or two deeper than it was. Water it in and put it in the sunniest spot you have. And go from there. I just started propagating my blueberries I did four cuttings and waiting for them to get leaves so I can do a how to video. Keep me posted and please come back with more questions if you have them ♥️
