BMW G650 GS.

Hi David, I live in Australia and have just recently purchased a 2014 BMW G650GS myself which had 14050klms on the bike when I purchased it
Like you I changed the engine oil and oil filter myself and for the oil filter housing I taped some aluminium foil directly under the oil filter housing and the shaped the foil into a funnel, so that when I undo the oil filter housing the oil will run down the aluminium foil and into the drain pan, that way I can use both my hands to remove the bolts and the cover and extract the old oil filter. This worked very well as I didn't get any of the old engine oil on the engine casings or around the drive sprocket
I did the same for the oil tank as I did not remove the plastic fairing completely , just enough to get my hand in there and undo the drain plug to let the oil out
I have 5 bikes but the BMW seems to take the longest time just to do and basic oil and oil filter change!, however for the first time I took it slowly
Hi Alan. Thank you for your comments and for watching my video. I will try your technique on the next oil change. I have to admit, I wasn't sure what to expect when I started this oil change, so it was a bit messy.. nonetheless, enjoyable.
Alan, I agree that the oil change is a bit more complicated than usual, as it takes 3 steps (the oil reservoir, the oil filter housing and the bottom of your engine). By the way, that original BMW manual suggests, that while changing the oil filter, you undo the lover bolt and attach an U-shaped piece of metal that fits the two pins beneath the housing. Then you unscrew the remianing two bolts and remove the cover and the oil filter. Regards from the opposite side of the world, CZ.
Good Video. I use an oil extraction hand pump to remove the oil from the tank. You just remove the dipstick put the hose in then pump the oil out. it takes a few mins, and you don't need to remove the left side fairing.

Is your pump electric or hand operated? I’m leaning toward a syringe-type myself.
@@jonmnelson I just use a hand pump kit from Briggs and Stratton - designed to remove oil from a lawn mower.
Great job. This is the only thing I don't like about my G650GS!

My third time watching...Now that I have my G-650gs it's time to give her a little love.
It’s called a crush washer. It’s designed to be compressed to make a seal. It only works once. The minor expense of replacing the washer compared to the cost of replacing or repairing a motor due to oil loss is not worth it. Replace it at every service.

I will definitely replace the crush washer at the next oil change.
Luckily, I didn't have oil leaks so far, but I learned something new.

@@davidlogasi1835 it’s not a common thing. But it’s possible. That’s why manufacturers recommend replacing seals etc at every service. To cover themselves from lawsuits. But saving a few dollars at the risk of breaking down or blowing your motor in the middle of nowhere doesn’t seem logical to me. So I replace every time. But when I ride I go 600km in 1 day most Tim’s.

Don't tight the bolt with 40 Nm. You are going to destroy everything. BMW change it to 20-22 Nm.

אני מניח שתוכל לקנות פילטר שמן באמזון. אני גר בדרום אפריקה וקונה בחנות מקומית.

Well done for taking the initiative and doing the oil change yourself.
I use a large oil syringe with about a foot of tubing to suck old oil out of reservoir . That way I don’t have to remove panels

Make sure when you are checking the oil level with the oil cap that you check it not screwed in . You check it with it just setting setting on top . If you screw it in all the way you are not going to put enough oil in the tank . The different level of oil between being screwed in and setting on top is a good 1/2 quart difference of oil in the tank . I'm just mentioning this because he cuts the video every time he goes to check it with the cap . He left that part out for some reason . The part he left out is a very important part of the oil change because so many other videos I have watched they all do it wrong and they screw it all the way down to check the level which is not what BMW tells you to do .

Thank you for watching and for the advice. Being a beginner, I followed the manual to the last detail: The manual calls for 2.3 L of oil in total. That would bring the oil level to the max mark when the oil is warm.
As you noted, it is recommended to check the oil level with the deep stick unscrewed (as per manual).
My thinking was that if you don't have a leak, 2.3 L of oil will be just right. Another point that worried me was that if there is too much oil in the sump, oil will seep into the airbox and possibly contaminate the air filter. But, I take your point and always appreciate a good tip.
@@davidlogasi1835 If you don't screw the cap in and check your level and its where it should be , its way below where the oil can seep into the airbox . Its just that so many people go by videos on how to do things without even reading the manual so they don't know if they should screw the cap in or rest it on top . and it would have been nice to not have cut that part out .

The service should take about 90 minutes or less to complete .
If it's your first time it could take longer. The best advice I can give you is to work slow and try to enjoy it .
It is really rewarding to ride a motorcycle that you serviced and to know that every bolt is tighten to spec.

Hi . Thanks for watching. It is a 19-inch front wheel, and it came like this from BMW dealership as an added option. I think it's the Sertao's spoke wheel.
Very nice video, my recommendation is to also check / exchange the rubber O-ring in the oil filter cover. It helps to protect any leaks from the oil filter compartment. I have an "F" generation and the procedure is the same. Make also sure that you treat the bottom M24 bolt kindly as it is made of aluminium and not iron.

I bought the motorcycle that way.
It was one of the options from BMW dealership. It came standard with the BMW G650GS Sertao.
I am very happy with the spoke wheels as it proved to me very sturdy on the technical off-road where you bounce over rocks.

Motul 5100? Isn't the factory recommendation mineral oil?
You are absolutely right. The factory recommendation is mineral oil.
However, I find the Motul semi synthetic oil better as it helps with a smoother gear change.
