Activism needs introverts | Sarah Corbett

  • For the introverts among us, traditional forms activism like marches, protests and door-to-door canvassing can be intimidating and stressful. Take it from Sarah Corbett, a former professional campaigner and self-proclaimed introvert. She introduces us to "craftivism," a quieter form of activism that uses handicrafts as a way to get people to slow down and think deeply about the issues they're facing, all while engaging the public more gently. Who says an embroidered handkerchief can't change the world?

    If you are an introvert, you are born with a temperament that craves to be alone, delights in meaningful connections, thinks before speaking and observes before approaching. If you are an introvert, you thrive in the inner sanctuary of the mind, heart and spirit, but shrink in the external world of noise, drama and chaos. As an introvert, you are sensitive, perceptive, gentle and reflective. You prefer to operate behind the scenes, preserve your precious energy and influence the world in a quiet, but powerful way.

    I would like to remind people:
    Introversion≠shyness
    Please people, being an introvert means you get tired by being around people, but that does not mean that you have to be shy.
    That's just each person

    The key point for me is "Play to Your Strengths". If you are a better advocate when you're alone or have time to think or when you're just encouraging others - go for it! So long as you're directing your efforts towards effecting positive change in the world then I'm all for it.

      Yusuf Why are you proud of being introvert?
      It's like being proud of everything negative in humans.
      You are much more likely to be submissive, depressed, suicidal, shorter life span, fewer friends, fewer friends mean shorter life for men, not for women. Avoid conflict and confrontation. you need to be able to handle conflict and confrontation to have a successful marriage.
      I can probably write a few pages of negative factors, and a few points on positive factors. But I won't. It's not that important to spread the word of the negative side effects of being introvert.
      It's a scale, so some have it more and others less.

    • @Bill-zp2mt
      @Bill-zp2mt 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yusuf You might be able to handle solitude, and task that requires solitude, but you will need humans sooner or later, because we are social creatures.
      I want to be with humans when I'm alone, but when I'm with them I want to withdraw. It's a paradox I have to deal with all the time.
      If I were to get kids, how will I be able to cope 24/7, cant take breaks while raising kids on a daily basis.

      As Susan Cain once wrote in her book about introverts (I believe it was called Quiet), “Introversion is not a choice, not a lifestyle, but an orientation.” Suicide is a choice. Having few friends is a choice and possibly a lifestyle. Which is why these things don’t always apply to introverts, as you’ve implied in your first comment. Sure introverts may be more inclined to be submissive or feel downtrodden or depressed, but this is due in large part- in my opinion, experiences, and from what my fellow introverted friends have told me-to environmental factors that were largely, if not entirely, out of their control. Thus, over time, the natural inclination lead to orientation, which then, in this instance, lead to the introverted side of the spectrum. Now at this point-if you’ve indeed read this far that is, in which case I thank you for bearing with me-your probably thinking to yourself, “Couldn’t the prior two sentences apply almost just as well to extroverts if you were to replace the word “introvert”?”, and you would be right, for that is ultimately my point. Introverts are just as human as extroverts, meaning they are just as likely to do what people tell them to do or feel bad about themselves as the opposite side of the spectrum. That is why this hot-to-cold spectrum exists, to tell people where they stand so they can figure out how to improve from there. If we, as humans capable of sound reasoning, recognize that we are overly sensitive or submissive, we will try to assert ourselves a little more. If we feel genuinely unhappy, we find something or reach out to someone that makes us feel genuinely happy. In conclusion, yes the terms “introvert”,”ambivert”, and “extrovert” do give us a sense of identity, as all “labels” do, but also just like labels, we shouldn’t let them rob us blindly of our individuality. We, as humans, ultimately are what we chose to be. If we think of the spectrum and the terms associated with it as guidelines rather than our destiny, sort of like the Zodiac signs (but not really), we will go much further as individuals. Thank you for reading and have a great life, whichever vert you are!

    If you're seeking ideas about change, read and study Frantz Fanon's "The Wretched of the Earth." Activism has to involve violence, if needed.

    • @juneelle370
      @juneelle370 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Very large studies show that it’s peaceful movements that work best! Also, violence means harm to sentient beings and the media tries to change that into property damage. In 68, the press showing peaceful protests and being mistreated by police got the public on their side! Support is LOST with violence! Something to think/research about~ which I had the study handy but I’m sure you can find it pretty easy

They've been very helpful in moving the conversation forward. The 4chan and Reddit introverts are the ones who detract from the conversation with their post-truthism, bigotry, and trolling. I'm as much of an introvert as an introvert can get, and I appreciate all the PSA and education that authors and speakers have been putting out there about introversion in the past several years. The "introvert revolution" has revealed so much and helped others understand us better. But I feel like it's getting played out--almost like we're acting like we're the special snowflake victims of a cruel extrovert-preferring world. I just hope the movement doesn't turn into the typical SJW victimization movement. Just my 2 cents.

    Events in public work out better for extroverts than introverts. Most of activism is talking to people. The more people one talks to, the more they get on their side. The front line activism work is pretty much suited for extroverts. This is like complaining that tall people dominate dunk contests.

    3 things -
    1) It's extrAvert
    2) Just because you're a little shy does't make you an introvert
    3) This is not apolitical... and the sky is blue

      Oh, look, another loner who thinks popping red pills will help him get a girlfriend. Go ahead and keep blaming feminism and other social justice movements for your own problems. Trump will totally fix them, and not just sit in his room watching Fox News and pissing off liberals with directionless pseudo-fascist rhetoric while installing loyalists and signing bills which indiscriminately erode our institutions.
      Quite honestly, it doesn't matter at this point what you believe, I'm just surprised you fell for a few unscripted, barely coherent words from the mouth of an incompetent dementia patient. You're screaming into the void, my friend. All you've ended up doing is enrage us lefties and turn moderate conservatives away from the GOP. Your long term political strategy is pathetic, and your grasp of economics and sociology is even more so.

    There is not such a thing as introverts and extroverts. It are personalities. Putting people in boxes and stamping them with a label is stupid and you should know better if you ever read a bit of history. I should mark this video for generalizing and offensive. People get mad about gender bias, which is mostly biology, this is just pseudo science. In 10 years we hopefully watch this video back and think of ourself how could we be so stupid.

      But the thing is that people do fit in boxes perfectly. This is simply how Science works. It uses labels, and variables to try and categorize things.
