  • Hi Flower Friends! It's Nicole from Flower Hill Farm- today I am working to stop the spread of an issue with my zinnias. It appears to be Alternaria Leaf Spot. I'm spraying with Copper Fungicide and pulling all of the leaves with spots. You'll also find magic tricks from Gramps at the end of this video!

Mine often look like that, soggy hot Illinois weather. Every year black spot and japanese beetles. Doesn't seem to effect the blooms. I just succession plant then pull out plants that get too far gone. The first couple blooms usually look funky, I deadhead them but once the plant starts branching it usually puts out great flowers.

I had a black spot fungus problem on my basil (we have so much moisture in WI too), it took three times of defoliating the spotted leaves and it hasn’t come back! Each time I took leaves off the problem was smaller and smaller until it was just gone :) I feel like you going through and taking the damage leaves off, and spraying, you’ll be OK. Stay hopeful friend!

It is really hard to tell from photos and your video but our experiences with something that looks like this, it was bacterial spot or Xanthomas campestris. It is soil borne and with your rain it is splashing on the lower leaves. Our experience with alternaria, it starts with dark brown or black at the margins of the leaf and moves to lesions on the petioles and stems. It eventually girdles the stems. Your pics didn't show that, but just showed dark spots throughout the center of the leaves. These lesions become surrounded by a yellow halo which can indicate bacterial not fungal. Best field control for bacterial spot is mulching your pathways. Many times when it stops raining the problem disappears by the pathways being mulched. Also bacterial leaf spot usually doesn't kill the plant. This has been our in observations here on our farm. Wishing you the best.

I’ve noticed when they get too much water that the leaves get wrinkled then when they dry out the leaves go back to looking healthy. Thank goodness we don’t get a ton of rain in this micro climate we are in. Hawaii has different zones depending on where you are on the island. If i lived up the mountain then the snapdragons and cool flowers would love it. I’m a block away from the coast and its hot and with light mists of rain at night. Good Luck with the Zinnia issue.

Also added couple caps of peroxide to my watering can and water the soil under the plants for a couple days in a row then returned to regular waterings.

Hi Nicole! We always have those same spots on our Zinnias' lower leaves. I'm from the tropics so we always have heavy rain and I always attribute it to that. I don't really mind so much especially when my Zinnias are already well established, because they always pull through eventually! Although I guess it's best to administer fungicide on your end because you have thousands and you sell them. Hope it works out!

I am glad I stumbled on this. I am in SE MI zone 6. From June 17 - July 18th we received 10.5 inches of water. This week we received 2 more inches. My California Giants are only about 12" tall and starting to bloom. It's not just mine, I intentionally drove by another garden that grows Giants as well. His are all blooming, but half the height they usually are.

I’ve had a terrible time with alternaria leaf spot on my zinnias this year. It hasn’t even been that rainy where I live but for some reason the fungus was bad very early on in the season and I think it slowed their growth considerably. Considering growing my zinnias in a cold frame/hoop house next year so they never get any overhead watering from nature. Alternaria suuuuccckkks! Good luck 🤞

I showed zinnias as well here in GA. We had a wet spring, like 10 to 15 inches of rain spring. This is my first year with zinnias and have watched them overcome all the adversities. Spring frost damage to wet weather, to now a super dry summer. They are thriving in spite of the adversities. Just let them do their thing. You'll be glad you did. cheers!

I wonder if it’s like the black spot roses get? That comes from the same thing tons of rain which causes fungus. They recommend you take off the infected leaves so they don’t spread to other leaves and also use the fungicide. So I think your doing the right thing. Lol typed all this and you said your doing exactly that should of kept watching. Yep looks just like black spot roses get. I think I actually lost my gorgeous yellow climber this year. So sad. They will still bloom though and the flowers will be useable and you strip the leaves anyway so you shouldn’t have to pull them.

😱😔 oh no! Yes that definitely looks to be a bacterial issue rather than just lower leaves turning yellow from getting too wet. It’s always something I swear! This is my first time growing cut flowers and one of my dahlia plant’s core stem just rotted from all the rain and flopped over half of my plant. I cut it out and hopefully the side shoots will continue. I dug to look at the tubers and they don’t seem mushy so I’m praying 👏🏼

So sorry about the Zinnias Nicole. I AM looking forward to your harvest and hopefully the treatment works! I did not even get to plant mine because I fell off a wall weeding on May 15th and broke my elbow. :( I have weeds EVERYWHERE! My husband planted 53 bubble gum vistas and they all got eaten by the groundhogs. Same with my dahlias. This year is a bust for me. With regards to the weather, I found gall on my azaleas for the first time this year and cut it all off, bagged it and threw the bags in the trash. I believe rain had a part in that too. Keep your spirits up!! :)

  • @gardengatesopen

Hey Doll, you're going to hate me for this easy answer, but I'm gunna risk it anyway...
I had these same rain problems a few years ago with my Magnolia Tree. It is planted in an area where I amended the soil, and so during torrential rain events, it tends to stay wet for waaaay too long. We're talking mushroom farm kinda wet!
The large amounts of rain had weakened my tree, bringing in the bugs, and also nutrient deficiencies. There were indications of fungus issues on the leaves as well.
We'll, my tree is too big to spray, not that I would anyway.
And the tree was visibly sad, and all droopy. 🥺
So hoping to fix it, I went out there, and poked deep holes into the soil with a stick.
    That's it.
Just poked holes into the soil, and left the holes there.
Not a big fat stick, just about a half inch around sized stick.
Aerate the soil, which was having trouble drying out - was my idea.
    🤷🏼‍♀️
    And guess what!
The next day it was much less droopy! WhoooHooooo!!!
But that wet weather still had weakened it. The bugs, and nutrition deficiencies were still there.
So I then took minerals - not a N-P-K, but actual powdered minerals, and made a few more holes around the drip line, and gave my tree a good feeding of those that way.
Three days later my Magnolia- (who's name is The Bob Tree btw - we have a whole history together, it's a long story...), anyway -
The Bob Tree was NOT droopy,
AND it was putting on new growth for the first time that season!!!
All the leaf issues it was having were all gone, and the bugs took off too!
So I rewarded it with a third set of holes around the drip line, and fed it worm castings, and molasses.
The Bob Tree has been thanking me ever since!
    Moral of the story -
Whenever my plants are having an issue - look to the soil...
    But that's just me... 💚🌱💚

I don’t think so it runs off at very quickly and dry within an hour. If you can see by the comments the wet humid summer is causing this problem for many people. Some research shows that the bio 360 actually prevents this problem from happening in some cases! Most likely because it prevents some of the rain from being soaked up into the soil

Feeling guilty complaining since the west and NW are dealing w/drought and fires. Cheering on your Zinnias!! Best of luck.

Nicole, I literally cannot stop watching your videos. 🤣 I found you on a whim when I was researching gladiolus and now my husband is about two videos away from prying my phone out of my hands to get me away from your channel. You’re so much fun and so knowledgeable and I can’t stop laughing every time you say “fungicide”. Definitely subscribing. Thank you for the laughs!

Copper Fungicide has an organic formula which works amazingly well on blackspot and other bacterial issues. I used it on my blueberry plants. It was probably caused by the rain. Sorry you ate a bug, but I guess the bright side to that is you got a touch extra protein?!

I agree with sunflower Steve copper is good. I grew my zinnias is self watering pots this year. They were all up and looking good then 5" of rain flooded the pots I didn't notice and they drown and rotted. Starting a new batch in flats maybe today if I beat the next round of flooding rain late this afternoon.... Good luck with your zinnias!

I found this same thing on a small portion of our zinnia patch today after being away for a week. We had a lot of rain while we were gone too. After some research, and watching your video, I am going to pull all of the infected leaves and drench everything in the copper fungicide. :) Fingers crossed this works, for both of us!

We have planted Zinnias for years to draw in pollinators. But, this year they aren't growing very well. Yours are ten times taller than ours. No blight and very little bug damage. We planted the seeds Memorial Weekend, and never experienced this slow growth before. First we had a drought and now a lot of rain. Maybe that is the cause? Take care!

  • @MDonat-mg8ox

Same thing happened to my zinnias. I’m using 3% Hydrogen Peroxyde I’m applying to the leaves and the soil so far it is working and it is also preventing other plants to get the disease well that’s how we do it in Ecuador 😅

  • @rachh1385

I would thin them out a bit to allow some more airflow. Strip off the lowest leaves to the ground. A hot day will sort them out again.
