- Hi Flower Friends! It's Nicole from Flower Hill Farm- today I am showing you SO many updates inside the deer fence where I grow several varieties of cut flowers. You'll see an update on my snapdragons, sweet peas, lisianthus, cosmos, basil, and all of the seeds I started right into the ground back in March. I am harvesting some now!
I also show you how I pinch my annual phlox to get longer stems! It's tedious work but I think it's worth it. PLUS- we had a surprise party for my grandmother's 80th birthday-- it's why I haven't been posting much this last week- we had a lot going on!

how bout my eyes started welling up with tears when I saw grandma. Happy 80th Birthday!!!
I cried! I got the great honor of driving my sweet Mom to her surprise 80th birthday party. She died unexpectedly less than a year later. A wonderful memory of a great day. She loved all the attention❤️❤️❤️

I JUST discovered you and I'm so happy!!! When I got divorced 8 years ago we had to sell our house. I had 13 LARGE perennial gardens that were show stoppers. People would stop and ask for permission to look around. I'd usually grab a pot and shovel and send them off with plants. I'm disabled now so I've only got a bunch of flower pots on my porch. It was so difficult to give up my babies. I had 72 different varieties of lillies... And so much more.

Oh Nicole! You are so blessed to have your grandparents still with you! That was the best part of the video for me, i already lost the 4 of mine at 28. I miss them so much!. When my grandpa turned 90 we had a party like that with all the family (over 200 people, big family) and now those memories are the ones we cherish, with all the family together celebrating a great life :)

I'm glad you didn't plant dill. When I'd buy flowers from a farmer at the market his bouquets always had herbs and the smell of dill was off-putting.
In Minneapolis, we're in a drought and it's hot. I shudder to think what my water bill will be.
Ooh! My David Austin bare-root rose I planted in a big plastic pot (I had a new roof installed last week so now I can get it in the ground) has about six teeny, tiny buds. I did not expect any this first year. 'Princess Alexandra of Kent' is supposed to be so fragrant. Perfect next to my front patio.

Just a funny thing I heard one time and it stuck, because imagining most of our grandmas young wild and free is hard to do! So glad you made it special for her! We have to cherish every moment we have with every person we love! Life is too short.

I have newly-founded respect for snapdragons this year!!! I always thought they were lacy, frilly, puny little flowers. I'd never grown them before and I had one in my experimental garden. It lasted TED DAYS in the vase. I never took it out of the 1020 tray until the day it flowered, then I picked it!!! Crazy vase life. LOVE BELLS O' IRELAND!!! Orlaya is so pretty too.

I planted the Rocket Snappies as you recommended: 4 inches apart. And they are stellar!
I cut a bouquet this morning. A couple of stems got knocked over from the storm we had
yesterday but that was fine. I harvested them. Thanks for the info.
There are smaller plants from last year's seeds as well, so that will be interesting to find
out how they grow.
Will they grow more stalks after the first cutting?
@@sarahgibson-reb1891 They should. Last year they were blooming way into
late autumn. The snappies like cool weather and put on a growth spurt.
Just I didn't have them planted so close together and they sprawled all over
the place. They self seeded and now there are many baby snappie plants.
I don't know how these will do because there are other plants around them.

Your flower farm flowers are looking so beautiful this year. I agree with you about the weeds.
Fun fact about dill, it's part of the same family as carrots and parsnips. It's the sap from the greens that makes your skin photosensitive... Aka you burn from the sun hints the blisters. If you harvest after the sun goes down or don't get the sap on your kin, you shouldn't react
Great video Nicole! I WEPT when I pinched my dahlias this year - I had never pinched them before. Their bloom production is AMAZING! I didn’t realize pinching could affect stem length - thanks for the info!

What a sweet party for your grandma! She was so surprised! My lizzies are glorious right now and I have a dahlia that is so big it may eat us in the night! I've never planted phlox but now I need to get some seed. I will remember to pinch them too. We are having a horrible bug problem as well. Everyone I watch is having the same thing. We've spent hundreds on Captain Jacks but the aphids seem to have it for cocktails and continue their evil sucking.

Have you thought about roses? I have been pruning at a five leaf stem and more buds pop up with huge stems
I have several varieties of DA roses and have more on the way! Love them but I’m not sure I’ll use them regularly in market bouquets 💐

I really feel for you on the bug front!! I am having the worst yeah for spider mites, blackfly, aphids and now Sawfly larvae!! They are going after my rose bushes like no tomorrow I have literally come back after 24 hours and found just leaf veins left on branches!! Trying not to spray and use natural controls but I may give in if it continues! I wish the butterflies were half as prolific as the bad bugs only seen a dozen so far this season!

Oh boy, I saw 1 Japanese beetle one day and the next it looks like the lawn and plants are swaying there are so many! I hate these darn bugs. So destructive. I hope you are able to ward them off!

I have some phlox I’m growing for the first time. After watching your video I went out to cut the blooms and wanted to smell. Wow, that is a nice smell! I need to grow some more next year.
