  • There have been multiple reports in the media about Muslims in China. But what is the reality behind all this? Do muslims really have trouble in China?
After traveling across Xinjiang and many other Muslim locations in China, I came across this mosque in Shanghai China where I met some Muslims on a Friday during their prayer.
They shared their personal experiences and truth about being a Muslim in China

Actually, my 2 cents on racism im Chinas. Ive lived in Beijing in 2007 for about 9 months, as part of my university course. Im from Germany. If there was racism then it was shielded away by language barriers. But i felt that there was no racism at least in beijing and other big cities. The only occasion of racism i experienced was by two english speaking young professionals or students (judging from their ascents i assume they were Brits) they were making fun of the local communters calling them apes who needed a wash. I confronted them and asked them if i should translate what they were saying to the locals (albeit in very bad chinese) Funny world eh?

Thank you. China has historically been an inclusive country, and that affects us. For the last 200 years, we have been too arrogant to lag behind the world, and finally we have been humiliated. But it is only the Japanese nation that has been ostracized to some degree because of the many massacres of Chinese civilians. We are very tolerant of other races, whether they are religious or ethnic. As for the two people you're talking about. I just want to say that people with no quality need to bathe their mouths and brains. Because it's moldy.

It must be admitted that Muslim groups (not all, many Muslims have no different with others and never flaunt their faith) such as the Hui ethnic group are generally considered to be relatively xenophobic and conservative in China. Compared with followers of Christianity, Buddhism, and Taoism, Muslim are indeed more conservative and xenophobic, especially in terms of marriage, education of offspring, and freedom of religious belief. In addition, Muslims' unique requirements for diet also make it more difficult for them to get along with other groups. Chinese people generally stress equality and respect for each other and non-interference, but this principle occasionally encounters difficulties when dealing with Muslim groups.
These problems lead to prejudice between ordinary people from Muslim and non-Muslim groups, but this prejudice is rooted by mutual ignorance, friction between conservatives and liberals, and differences in customs, rather than racist ideas or historical discrimination. Prejudice is common in China and can easily be eliminated through deepened communication and exchanges. I assure you, there are no issues in China that can be labeled as "discrimination".
At the same time, at the national policy level, Muslim groups enjoy the same rights as other ethnic groups and other groups, and even more. The most known is the addition of points in the college entrance examination. I trully understand and agreed these policies, but such policy tilting inevitably deepens prejudice to some extent: Many Han people often ridicule themselves as inferiors. So, say Muslim are not free or safe? Ha, that is completely nonsense.
I can cite a example that can be found in the recent news. In the earthquake in Gansu, many local Hui people were affected. All over the country, people sent supplies to the disaster area. Some of the food was not clearly labeled as halal food, such as bread, milk, oil, etc, which caused some local Hui people's dissatisfaction and reject. This incident caused a lot of criticism on the Internet. Many people don't understand the behavior of being picky when facing disasters and lack of food and clothing, but the government did not ignore this issue. The subsequent food was guaranteed to be halal food. In terms of equal treatment of various groups and ethnic groups, the Chinese government has really made the greatest efforts.
I want to say a few more.
Several years ago, I dating with a man who was born in a Muslim family. He came from a Muslim community town in Yunnan. But he fled from his hometown, working in big city, and completed his university studies. Apart from not eat pork, he has no different from me. He refuse being a Muslim, hated the oppression and conservatism of his family, hates his father's extreme machismo, and sympathizes with his mother and sister at home. He hatred of Muslims so deep, so that I still remember some of his words when he talked about it.
Later, I traveled to Turkey for one month. I have been to Istanbul, Ankara, Antalya, Izmir, Gaziantep and some other cities and attractions. Although the degree of Muslim openness varies in different regions, the secularized Islam did surprise me. It shines brilliantly in modern art, culture, commerce and other fields, and people are also very open and enthusiastic. Many of the restrictions and requirements I see in domestic Muslim groups are rare in Türkiye, and it is more inclined to self choose. Although mosques are everywhere, the religious atmosphere is not very strong.
If have a place similar to Turkey, it may be Xinjiang, where Uighurs who believe in Islam but also very open, but not all Muslim communities in China like this. I have always believed that secularization is a path that Muslims must accept, Good for others and for themselves. Everything needs constant self transformation, Nothing is immutable. impermanence is the norm.

I do think respecting another person's diet and lifestyle is also part of being open and respectful as well....I don't think that having different diets would be an obstacle to form friendships with the other side....sometimes your fears and prejudices might be what really stops that and not the other way around.... obviously they have some restrictions when it comes to marriage and such but I don't think that would matter, people can just be neighbors, friends and other kinds of relationships....as long as both sides respect each other there won't be any issue and these differences and variety of people is what actually makes a nation attractive, culturally rich and good with time

Muslims aren´t xenophobic at all, that´s absolutely wrong. In fact islam is the most ethnically diverse and inclusive religion in the world and very welcoming. Everytime I see foodvlogs of non-muslims in muslim countries they are always treated very kindly and with respect and often they invite them into their homes.

The continuous history of Islam in China is way older than the history of America by some 1000 years
There are Mosques still operating in China that date back to early 700AD
Some of the largest Mosques are found in China many built recently to accommodate a growing Muslim population.
China's Islam is progressive, it was the first country to pioneer female only Mosques and female imams.
The legacy of Islam in China is unlike the West where there is always antagonism with Proselytizing Christianty.
In China it has always been viewed as a largely peaceful and clean religion.
Contrast what's happening in Gaza right now and the enablers of slaughter the US, it's so hypocritical and ironic not to mention downright idiotic for West to still believe in Xinjiang nonsense speed by their media.
But they are mostly a monolithic block in the West. They like to believe they are different and open but many there are blind and close minded.
Hopefully this new Gen will cut the bullshit.

They cook the best lamb cuz you know lamb meat could be gamey and nasty if not cooked right, but just ten mins drive away from my home in China there is a place with tons of Hui/Muslism restaurants with only the best lamb soup in the world, I am not kidding.
