- Had a chance to review the ZR2 while traveling. Didn't get to take it to my normal test area, but had some fun none the less.
Engine Adventures strives to explore and test the AWD and 4WD systems of all crossovers, SUVs, and pickup trucks. To do this we test vehicles in real world environments in a way that allows viewers to cross shop and explore any vehicle they may be interested in learning about.
New videos every Saturday at 6:30 A.M. MST and occasionally on Wednesdays.
Nice review. And thanks for the information regarding the ZR2 ability to use the rear lockers in two wheel drive! Keep the good reviews coming!
Thanks for watching and commenting! I appreciate the support!
I've found that disabling the stabilitrack by holding down the traction control button and turning offroad mode on, makes my ZR2 so so much more enjoyable. Love this truck
Thanks for sharing your experience!
Granted the ZR2 has some short comings (like everything else) I do however have to disagree with you in suspensions ~vs~ the trd pro. I had the use of the following vehicles in 2020. Trd pro Tacoma , trd pro 4Runner , Raptor (not impressed with the raptors suspension at all) and had long term use of these truck (a couple months with each) including a 20 ZR2. I’ve tested these on & off road and road trips on the hi-way. My pick of these would be the ZR2 over all. They all do have their strong and weak points however. Out of these 4 vehicles I’ve ran I would rate the gas version ZR2 the most enjoyable , the trd pro 4Runner 2nd , the trd pro Tacoma 3rd and Ford last. (Mainly since it left me stranded twice. Once at home and once 400 miles from home). You shot a great video I really enjoyed the info and the snowy scenery. Thank you.
Thanks for your input! I typically only take them offroad one day and on my normal course. I agree with the 4 Runner being the smoothest out of those, and I did a pretty fun mountain drive in the 4 runner. The Sequoia TRD Pro was the smoothest of all of them until the bumps got really big. I should also have a TRX video up in the next week or two, but I'm not 100% sure how I feel about that truck yet.
I wish I had the ZR2 over the same course as the rest of my videos for a normal review!
Keep up the good work
Thanks!
@@EngineAdventures Great video and commentary. I’ve shared your channel with a few buds :) Those XJ’s were sick!
Thanks! It was almost comical how easy it was for them to drive on the snow compared to the other vehicles up there. Of course they were built up a bit too.
What you say the ko2s are better than the duratrax?
It depends on the terrain and the vehicle. The KO2's are most likely a better ice tire. The Duratracs are probably a better mud tire. In my test hill that has a very fine silty dirt layer on top the more aggressive Duratracs really tear up the hill without giving that much more traction. KO2's are less aggressive and tend to float a little better rather than dig. Again tires are very terrain dependent and I wouldn't fault anyone for their name brand tire choice, including Falken, Yokohama, General, Cooper, GoodYear (own's Cooper now), BFG, Toyo, Michelin (not really for offroading though), I'm sure I'm missing a few good ones.
That looked like it was a lot of fun. Nice job on the video. 👍.
Question: Do you think the placement of the recovery hooks could possibly cause damage to the front bumper area in some situations?
Thanks for the support! I could see it damaging the front if the ZR2 is significantly lower than whatever it's hooked to. In most situations it will be fine, a chain will maybe scratch it, but I use dynamic ropes. The reason I brought it up is because of how low and far under the truck they are. Good luck getting to them if it's buried in mud, sand, snow, etc.
Also did you ever put it in off road mode? And if you hold the traction control button down for around 3 to 5 seconds, you can turn off abs and traction control in any mode.
I did try offroad mode, that is what it was in the whole time I believe. I honestly don't remember if I tried the traction control button at all. Wish I had this one in my area and for more time, the testing would have been much more thorough!
@@EngineAdventures I thought you did a great review. I was just curious. I have a 2020 and it's a beast.
Thanks for support and the tip on the traction control button, I'll be sure to test it if I get the chance.
@@EngineAdventures absolutely. It's awesome in 2 wheel drive. You can turn everything off with the rear locked and let it eat. So much fun
After sliding and getting stuck in the snow, I can agree the duratracs are useless past 50%
Thanks for sharing your experience with them! Most of my experience has been with them on vehicles with less than 10,000 miles so pretty new tread, but from what I've ready they really lose traction when they are about 50% tread and lower.
We own both the toyota and the zr2. There is no comparison on how much better the ZR2 rdes. You don't know what you are talking about.
I haven't driven both back to back. From what I remember the Tacoma was smoother, the body remained more flat and didn't bounce around as much. The ZR2 felt more controlled despite being stiffer. Much like the difference between a sedan and a sports car on the pavement. The sedan will have a smoother ride, but the sports car will remain planted and provide better feedback. I believe I was able to go faster in the ZR2 than any other vehicle I've had on this course. It very much inspires confidence.
